SSRS 2005 With Remote Catalog Very Slow - Any Ideas?
Nov 6, 2007
Hi,
Just wondering if anybody has any idea why when using RS 2005, remote catalog, asp.net 2.0 and using the .net 2.0 reportviewer control on an aspx page it seem to run 15 - 20 times slower than if we use a local catalog. The two machine in the remote catalog setup have a 2gb network connect between them, the doesn't apear to be any network load on either machine.
Any ideas will be greatfully received.
Cheers
Jon

I have a MS SQL 2000 db. It cannot be remotely accessed by other websites or by another MS SQL db (I have tried everything to make it do so).
I am trying to figure out how I can use the data I have in a table to populate an asp page on another server/website not related to mine.
I was told an XML page and using a JS script I could make the remote site read from my db. Not knowing XML, I am not sure if this is the correct way of trying to populate an asp page with data from my MS SQL table on my server to a webpage on another server.
I do not want to give this person a connection script, or any kind of potential access to my db, but I do want the pages I develop for him to retrieve data I have in a certain table on my db without having to create a whole new db on his site. I want to control the content, add more content to both his and my website at the same time, so one table would be my best bet if I can get his site connected to my db table.
These will not be read/write pages at all, just read only. They will not be "search" pages either, just data populated on a page from my db table.
Is this possible? Ideas, thoughts, and suggestions welcome. Thank you.

"SSIS 2012 Catalog doesn't have option to give read access to SSIS Catalog to view package run reports" ... Any luck allowing power developers / operators access to READ the SQL 2012 SSIS Execution Reports without granting them SSIS_Admin or Sysadmin?
According to this link posted back in 2011 (w/ Microsoft's feedback in Nov 2011: "We’re closing this issue as “Won’t Fix.” At this point the bug does not meet our bar for resolving prior to SQL Server 2012 RTM. As we approach the SQL Server 2012 release the bar for making code changes gets progressively higher." URL....Regarding Permissions to SSIS Catalog, here are the findings. We can give access in three ways:
1. READ Access – We can provide a user db_datareader access. With this the user can see the objects within the SSIS catalog database, but cannot see the reports.
2. SSIS_ADMIN – Add the user to this database role in SSISDB. With this the user can view the reports. But it also provides them privileges to modify catalog information which is not expected. We can add it using below script EXEC sp_addrolemember 'ssis_admin' , 'REDMONDPAIntelAnalyst'
3. SYSADMIN - Add the user to this server role. This will make the user an admin on the SQL server. This is not intended. Is there any method available which will have provision to give read only access to see SSIS Catalog package execution reports and not having modify Catalog access.

The table tA contains (here I m using storedprocedure to return the values as columns varchar(8000))
ID LocationName
1 Door
2 FrontCounter
The number of records may vary like sometimes it have 2 or 3 or 4 or more records
So I have to return row values as column name.
tAChild
POSID storeID tAID Auth
1 140 1 true
1 140 2 false
Result Should be like ( to create this I m using SP with Dynamic sql query to create temp table)
POSID storeID Door Window
1 140 true true
if more records in tA it should append in the end of result as new column...
Is this the above is right way to implement ?any other ideas about this...
Please suggest me......

One of the instance is hosted in a cluster node with 128GB of ram and 80 processors allocated to this instance...And last week, we had an issue with temp DB as it was full.We increased the drive space over the weekend.
Now whenever we connect this instance from other server through remote SSMS, we see, refreshing the object including connecting to this instance is very very slow...It takes more than 10 sec. Initially this was not the case. Even hear from end user that the application is performing gradually slow.
I check the network, fregmentation, settings across this instance, and all looks good.

Hello.I have a slow response with a system that I am setting up. The OS isWin 2000 Server with SQL Server 2000. My first execution of the SQLprocedure is slow (about 40 seconds), while the second execution isfaster (approx. 3 seconds and what I expect).Using query analyser I can leave the window up and come back ( aftersay 10 minutes ) and my next response is will be slow (and fasterstraight after this). The query itself is the "TOP 10" rows from a table of a remote DB (MSDE2000 - NT station). This is similar to;---------------------DECLARE @SelectRowsFromRemoteDB NVARCHAR(400)SET @SelectRowsFromRemoteDB = "SELCT a.* FROM OPENROWSET('SQLOLEDB', 'Remote', ....) a"EXEC sp_executesql @SelectRowsFromRemoteDB---------------------The CPU usage goes high (with Task Manager), but oddly the task withmost usage is the "Idle Process".Please help with an answeror a good starting point to known where the resources are being used.Regards JC.....

Hi,
I have succesfully created a Stored Procedure which runs under 2 seconds locally.
However when i run the same proc from another machine in the LAN, the response times vary from 5 sec to over 40 Secs and even occassionally times out.
My server is SQL 2005 Dev Edition (32 Bit) running on a Dual Core Box with 2GB memory.
Any Ideas why this would be happening?

Greetings,
I continue to see this similar post all over the place, but no resolutions.
We have SSRS installed and operational in production. There are reports that get accessed from either an aspx page or from the built in IIS site for SSRS.
First time access is the performance problem. Here are two scenarios:
1) from your browser, pull up the front page to SSRS: http://myserver/reports. This simple operation will take about 2 minutes to come up. Drill to the report in question and it runs fairly well first time through. Throw a different query at it and it runs faster. If you wait a while (maybe 15 minutes +) the whole thing will spin back down and take 2 minutes to come up again. If you exit the website and come back immediately, everything still stays quick.
2) from an aspx page, same thing... if the service is spun down, the end user will typically get tired of waiting or timeout. Once everything is spun up, the process runs fine.
We setup another report that just does some simple statistics and added in a timed subscription for every 15 minutes hoping it would keep the service up and running.... no joy. Still the same.
Also adjusted the app pool to about every option to see if we could keep it running, but no joy.
====
So -- any ideas? Forget about running a report.... just think about pulling the website up. 2 minutes to get it to display in the browser the first time...
arghhhhhh
Thanks in advanced.

In an ASP, I have a dynamically created SQL statement that amounts to "SELECT * FROM Server1.myDB.dbo.myTable WHERE Col1 = 1" (Col1 is the table's primary key). It returns the data immediately when executed.
However, when the same record is updated with "UPDATE Server1.myDB.dbo.myTable SET Comments = 'blah blah blah' WHERE Col1 = 1", the page times out before the query can complete.
I watched the program in Profiler, and I saw on the update that sp_cursorfetch was being executed as an RPC once per each row in the table. In a table of 78000 records, the timeout occurs well before the last record is fetched, and the update bombs.
I can run the same statements in Query Analyzer from a linked server and have the same results. The execution plan shows that a Remote Query is occurring on the select that returns 1 row, and a Remote Scan is taking place on the update scanning 78000 rows (I guess this is where all the sp_cursorfetch calls are happening...?).
How can I prevent the Remote Scan? How can I prevent the execution of the RPC sp_cursorfetch for each row in the remote table?
Thank you!

We have implemented a SQL Server 2005 Full Text Search solution with realtime updates to the catalog.
Is it a best practice to rebuild the entire catalog periodically?
I have been searching for best practices on this but without success. Any links to best practices for this sort of thing much appreciated.

I have Googled the terms 'move path change full-text index catalog' and have come up with nothing that pertains to SQL 2005...only 2000 and 7.0....
So my question remains, how the heck do you change the location of the full-text catalog in SQL 2005? Must I delete and re-create? If so is there a good article on this process? I don't want to loose data or screw anything up....I can't imagine I am the first person who wants to do his?????

Workaround says remove the .manifest files. Where are they?

I am trying to write some admin only procedures which will collect information to one of my development server from other production and development servers.
I have created linked servers to access these other servers on the development server. This development server is SQL Server 2000 EE. Other servers which I want to access are 2000 and 2005 (vaious editions)
E.g I have another development server called PRODTEST which is SQL Server 2005 and on the development server I have created a linked server pointing to PRODTEST called TESTLINKSRV. I want to access new object catalog view (as I do not want to use sysobjects)
When I run the following query
SELECT * FROM [TESTLINKSRV].[DBNAME].[sys].[objects]
I get following error,
OLE DB error trace [Non-interface error: OLE DB provider does not contain the table: ProviderName=' TESTLINKSRV ', TableName='" DBNAME "."sys"."objects"'].
Msg 7314, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider ' TESTLINKSRV ' does not contain table '"DBNAME"."sys"."objects"'. The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table.
So I try this query
SELECT * FROM [TESTLINKSRV].[DBNAME].[sys.objects]
and I get following error
Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Invalid object name TESTLINKSRV.DBNAME.sys.objects'.
So bottom line is how do I access catalog views on a 2005 server from a 2000 server using linked server?
I hope someone understands what I am trying to achieve. Please let me know what is it that I am doing wrong.
Thank you

I recent installed a named instance of SSRS 2005 on a remote server. The server has a side by side install of SSRS 2000 and SSRS 2005, with the SSRS 2005 being a named instance. The server also has SSL and MS Sharepoint Portal Server installed.
When I try and connect to the SSRS 2005 instance with my client install of Mangement Studio, I get the error message:
"The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish a trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. (System.Web.Services)
Additional Information: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure. (System)."
Obviously, this is a SLL issue, but, not being a security guru, I have no clue on how to fix this. I do know the certificate is valid, not expired and properly working. Both installs of SSRS are set up using the SSL certificate. Also, I am not connecting to SSIS with Management Studio, as I heard there is a bug connecting to both SSRS and SSIS at the same time.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!!

Hi,
I deployed SSRS reports to my local report server and set the connection string to access a server on the network with Analysis Server.
Result:
I can access and use the reports from my computer. But when I use any other computer on the network I can't use the reports. I can access them but they don't find the database ant therefor they don't present any data.
Error message as folows: "An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Get Online Help
Cannot create a connection to data source 'dsAnalys'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection) Get Online Help
Database 'Analys' does not exist. "
This works fine on my local machine, the error comes only when i try to browse on a remote machine. I am using SQL Server 2005
Any help would be appriciated!!!

Is it possible to write SSRS 2008 reports to run on an existing SSRS 2005 server?
If yes, what do I need to do to be able to write SSRS 2008 reports on my developer PC that will run on the SQL 2005 Server (which also has SSRS 2005 installed on it)?
I installed Visual Studio 2008 beta on the development PC and it appears that it needs SSRS installed on it too. So I installed SQL 2008 SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) and SQL 2008 Workstation Components onto the developer PC. Next I run the SQL 2008 "Reporting Services Configuration" tool. When I click on the "Web Service URL" section it hangs indefinitely and I have to force it closed.
The developer PC is Windows Vista Business.
Any suggestions on making this work, or any other information that you can think of that would allow me to use Visual Studio 2008 and the SQL 2008 "Report Designer Preview" tool to develop SSRS reports that will run on the SQL 2005 SSRS server?
Thanks!

In our application we use the ADODB.Recordset.
In SQL server 2000
If there was a view that joined 2 tables and I accessed the view the 2 ID fields in the view would still have the AutoIncrement attribute still set to true so that I knew those were Identity fields.
In SQL server 2005
I dont' know why but if you reference a View that has Identiy AutoInc fields in ADO it doesn't keep those properties.
Also for whatever reason we Set the ID field to 0 to let ourselves know its a new Record. SQL 2000 let it happen and assumed it to be null where as By Setting the ID to 0 in SQL 2005 causes it to blow up on me.
Is there some sort of setting in SQL that can make SQL 2005 work like SQL 2000 in these two instances...

I have a windows forms application that runs on my PC that populates a SQL Server Compact 2005 database and then transfers that .sdf file to my mobile device. The communication between the mobile device and PC is done using the Desktop RAPI class from OpenNetCF (http://www.opennetcf.com/FreeSoftware/DesktopCommunication/tabid/90/Default.aspx)
Anyway, I was previously using SQL Server Mobile 2005 and my populated .sdf was around 1.7 MB and I could transfer it to my mobile device in a minute. Once I switched to SQL Server Compact 2005, the transfer process began taking 3 minutes with a 1.5 MB .sdf file. The SSCE also got bloated more easily so I added in the Compact operation each time after I fully populate the SDF to keep the file size at 1.5 MB, but even then it still takes 3 minutes.
I've done a few tests where I simply switch between the two database versions and that simple switch of the version changes the transfer time. I am dumbfounded trying to figure out what the cause might be. Since it is just a file transfer, why would the version even matter unless somehow SSCE is really not compacting and lying about its actual size.
Has anyone run into anything similar to this or may have any ideas what might be going on?
Thanks.

Hello
I was using SQL SERVER 2000 ... In one table I've created FULL TEXT SEARCHING ( Full text catalog along with full text indexing)
Now we had to install our db in SQL SERVER 2005 standard edition. But while taking script it gave me two lines like:
if (select DATABASEPROPERTY(DB_NAME(), N'IsFullTextEnabled')) <> 1
exec sp_fulltext_database N'enable'
GO
if not exists (select * from dbo.sysfulltextcatalogs where name = N'DEV_CAS_DiagnosisCatalog')
exec sp_fulltext_catalog N'DEV_CAS_DiagnosisCatalog', N'create'
GO
so I used this in the new db creation script...
But I couldn't get where it actually is in SQL SERVER 2005 standard edition.
and also plz help how should we create if it doesn't exist...
What could be the problem....
Thanks In advance

hi,
I ran into a situation that if I don't use sql server for a while, in MS SQL Server Management Studio, when I run some query again, it takes a long time to respond. I looked into it with Activity Monitor, seems like the query was waiting for something, in the process view tab, it shows that:
WaitType: LATCH_EX
Resource: LOG_MANAGER(112F88C8)
What is the latch-ex? What should I check next to find out the problem?
Thanks.

Hi!
I have a SQLServer 2005 running om a 64bit cluster. It is used to run a SharePoint 2007 portal. My problem is that the access to the database from the other servers in the farm is very slow.
I made a test program in C# that creates a standard .Net sqlConnection and runs a simple query 100 times. When run on the database server it takes less than a second, but when I run it from the web frontend server it takes 30 seconds. It never fails, it's just slow. The network connection is fast when copying files etc.
I see nothing out of the ordinary in the event log.
Do any of you have an idea what might be the problem or know how I could try to find the problem?
Thanks!
