SSRS Printing Gives Different Page Output In Visual Studio And Deployed Environments.
May 6, 2008
Hi,
I'm having a struggle with the printing of landscape reports in SSRS.
The reports appear fine when printed from the Visual Studio environment, but when I deploy to a web environment I get 1 or 2 blank pages before reporting continues (i'm using the SSRS printer icon, not the browser printer icon).
I've spent ages looking at margin and printer settings and can't find anything wrong - especially as it works under Visual Studio.
Has anyone experienced problems of this nature and how did you resolve them?
Cheers.

Hi All,
In my SSRS report. I have a report which has only one page. In preview it is showing as only 1 page but when I am printing the report. I am getting two printouts with the second page as a blank.. Please help me in printing the page that contains report. Intially I used a Page header, at that it used to print the blank page with a header only. Now as I removed the header it is printing the page without header i.e Blank Page.. So please help me in prinitng a single page that has the report. It is urgent,..
Thanks

Greetings,
I have a report that was previously deployed to a reporting services host (running Reporting Services 2005 SP2) and I'm running the version of Visual Studio that came with reporting services on the same reporting serviceshost. The deployed report was never opened on this particular server, so it doesn't appear in the recent files list. Is there a trick to open a deployed report in all of Visual Studio's report editing glory? Visual Studio has a File Open option to open an analysis services database, a project, or a file. A "deployed report" seems to be none of these options since it's an RDL file stored somewhere that IIS can find it. I know that I can use Report Manager and export the RDL for the report and then edit that RDL file in Visual Studio, but doing that appears to disable all of Visual Studio's report editing features (ie it works no better than notepad). What's the trick to get Visual Studio to open the deployed report and allow all of it's editing tools to work properly and then save the updated report back to the reporting services server?
Thanks,
Ron

I created and deployed a report to my Report Server and everything is functioning fine. However, my laptop was inadvertantly wiped when I was having it serviced and I had not backed up this report to VSS. Is there a way to import that deployed report back in to Visual Studio or do I have to basically rebuild my report from scratch?

I am a novice Visual Studio user. When creating reports in Visual Studio, I get an extra blank page with a report heading when I save the report as a .pdf and print from Adobe. I recently created a report with 2 grouping levels and I get 2 blank pages (w/report header only) between every full detail page. I've checked my report properties and grouping settting several times. I've also checked the properties for each of the lines defined in my report and nothing indicates that it would cause a problem. Note: My report consists of a header, a body with a table-header-detail-2 grouping levels-footer, and a report footer. I would REALLY appreciate any suggestions for solving my problem. Also, when I view the report on the Preview Pane it looks exactly as I would expect. The extra pages only appear when saving as a .pdf and printing from Adobe.:confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

We're just about to enter the dark world of SSRS.
As I understand it, to author the reports, we need Visual Studio. Some stupid questions then:
1> Does SQL Server 2005 come bundled with Visual Studio 2005, if so, this just represents one user license?
2> We will be needing more than one licesnce, what version of Visual Studio is it?
3> Am I right in thinking that I can just Install VS on a client machine instead of direct on the server, if so, is there any SDKs or the like I need to install so I can author SSRS?
4> Do I need to install SSRS on my machine?
Thanks for your help

I have all this gray space at the top of my tasks. When I <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Left-click> to select all of my tasks and then try sliding it up, it creates even more gray space and actually moves it down. If instead when I <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Left-click> and then <Ctrl>+<Arrow-up> it doesn't move it. Is there any easy way to eliminate all this gray space at the top?

I am using VS2008 and trying to add an Image to a report (RDLC).
The documentation suggests the properties window for the Image field will have a Source and a Value field.
I cannot see them.
Elswhere, the documentation talks about an Image Wizard.
I cannot find that either.
I have added an Image to the Report's Embedded Images list.
How do I add an image to my RDLC?

I have deployed a report that is configured for landscape printing. It does print in landscape, however, only the first seven columns appear on the first page and the other five columns appear on the next page. Is there a method, like in print preview setup in MS Excel, where we can scale down the print (like to 80%) so all columns appear on each page?
Thanks!

Hello,
I've seen this question floating around, but I have not been able to find a definitive answer.
Can this be done, and if so, what do I need to install into Visual Studio 2003?
Thank you.

SSIS package "logging.dtsx" finished: Success.
This is exactly when I need when a package is running but I want to be able to see it without using Visual Studio.
I would do it in Reporting Services but I need to find out to get the information. The SSIS logging feature in a package does not provide that kind of info.
Did someone try this already?
Thanks!

Hi,
I'm still quite a beginner with the Report Designer and now I have faced a problem. My goal is to make a reports refresh each time it is loaded. I know that this can be done by using rs:clearsession = true-method but in order this to work, it should be added to each link. There are a lots of links in the reports we are using and therefore it would be more practical to find another way to refresh the report on page load. Is there any way to do this with some kind of code attached to each report? I'm using Visual Studio 2003 and my Reporting services 2000.

"Short" Story Version:
I have a VS 2005 Web Appplication solution that uses SQL Server Reporting Services 2005. One of the projects is a Report Server Project. In this project I have an RDL file that has:
1.)a non-shared XML DataSource (no credentials),
2.)a DataSet with a Command Type of Text and a Query String that is as follows:
<Query>
<XmlData>
<Root>
<LOAD LOAD_ID_PREFIX="" LOAD_ID="" TRUCK="" DIAGRAM=""/>
</Root>
</XmlData>
</Query>
3.)a field that comes from the Database that is of VarBinary(Max) that is a JPEG Image
What happens is, is that by doing #2 above, at design time I can create tables and hook into my datasets and get the report all designed out the way I want. Then at runtime, I have a Stored Procedure that uses the "FOR XML AUTO" option so that I can represent my results from the database in an XML fashion which will allow me to replace the XML Schema in between the Root tags above (in #2) with my actual data (which still has the same schema). I then save the modified RDL to a database table field and move on to happily ever after......in this case, not. In this case, since an VarBinary is involved, unless I want to get a pointer back for the Diagram Column, I have to use the "FOR XML AUTO, BINARY BASE64" option. This returns an Encoded string to represent the Binary value that was in the Database....and this is the partial source of my angst....read on.
My approach that I described above worked flawlessly in all cases where an image wasn't involved. This report is the only report in the whole system I am working on that will have an image and it is the last one being done, so that's why I didn't run into this earlier.
I have tried all kinds of things at different levels, but the thing that I have tried that seemed to me to have the most potential was to use Embedded Code to take the Encoded ASCII Value and convert into something binary that the SSRS Reporting Engine likes (so my image will show), but I have been unsuccessful thus far. The error message I keep getting now from my Embedded Function is: "Invalid length for a Base-64 char array", which I have not been able to resolve thus far....and I do know that the Binary value in the database is good becuase I can see it in pages in my application otherwise.
This aside, is there anyone out there that knows how to take the value of a VarBinary(Max) field and insert it into the Text (XML) DataSet in the markup of an RDL file....and have it appear correctly when the report is rendered in something like the standard Report Viewer Control (or even when being previewed at design time inside of Visual Studio for that matter)?
Just to be clear, the root of my problem, as I see and understand it, is that I have a VarBinary value in a database that is being converted to a string (ASCII...I am presuming) due to how I am writing my stored procedure and then needs to go back to something else binary that the SSRS Engine will accept so that I can see my Image in the report when I render it.
I am wishful that someone out there understands my problem and has run into this and has a solution......but I am wishful of winning the lottery, too, and that hasn't happened yet...............
Thanks.

Hi Guys,
I am having a unique problem with the Reporting server. We are using SQL Server 2005 and we have a dedicated server for reports. I created a report for creating labels and it is workinf fine in my development environment (running it through Visual Studio) but goes way off while printing it from the reporting server. I wanted to check the rdl files in the server in which I deployed but could not find it. I would really appreciate if you can give me a solution by which label printing could be done without any problem in the server.
Thanks,
Raja

In SRSS 2005 (SP2) my page header seems to take up the same amount of space on the
1st page it would take if it were to print; I have PRINT ON FIRST PAGE set to
false - the header doesn't print - it just leaves the same amount of space.
How do you get the report to ignore that. I do have a report header built
into the body of my report. I have tested this by increasing the size of my
page header and it does move the report up or down on the 1st page by that
amount.

I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this for me... I'm using SSRS SP2 and I have a basic report using a single list object which, at the moment, should print only two pages based on the results of the underlying query. When previewing the report, it shows the two pages. But when the report is printed or exported, there is a blank page before each report page.
What I've done so far:
1) Verified the properties of the list object and made sure that 'Insert a page break before this list' is not checked
2) Ensured that there are no hidden objects that could be causing this behavior
3) Ensured that the report size + margins are within the boudaries of an standard 8.5x11 paper size
Any suggestions on something that would solve this issue?
Sam

I have written a report visual studio. The report has 10 multi-value parameters that pull data from their individual data sets within the reports. When running the report from within Visual Studio it renders fine. There are no errors reported, only a warning related to a pathname I have use to retrieve image data and display on the report.Deployment of the report is error free.When I view the report I briefly get the "Loading" splash window, but then nothing. None of the headers or static text is displayed. The results window is blank.
The report defaults all the parameter values. In trying to debug the issue I have found by reducing the number of parameter values the report will render. Once I have all the values added, the report does nothing.Below is the query being used for the report. The where clause in the query shows the parameters being used and the syntax.We are running on Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2.

I'll go to a dataset, open up the query designer, add a new parameter, then refresh the fields, but the parameter won't be added as a report parameter. If I go to the dataset properties under the list of parameters, the value in the dropdown will be blank. However, sometimes this will automatically add.
Is this a bug in Visual Studio? How do I get around this?

How to manage the progression of SSRS reports from DEV > TEST > USER > PROD...I can see that you COULD manage this all from within VS however then all the control is in the developers hands and even though you can control access with permissions and stuff, its not very user friendly to provide a tester or business area manager or project manager with VS just so they can publish reports as they are approved.Are their any such tools to manage migration between ssrs servers or something that you could have a user test a report and then do something like "approve/promote" it to the next environment, or is this something we would need to create ourselves?
I can see that there are a few things that allow PROJECTS to be migrated (powershell scripts and something about octopus deploy) but these all seem to be too "big" for our organisation - we generally develop reports as a "logical group" (project) but migrate them individually or in VERY small groups (5 is probably the maximum), however keeping tabs on what report is at what version in what environment is causing our DBA massive migranes...Maybe there is something we can do from TFS or perhaps we need to build a utility app?

When I deploy a report, and then browse to it with FireFox, I only see 2 inces of the report. I can scroll through the entire report, but only see the 2 inch window's worth at any time.
Its like the html element the report gets put into has a hard coded height, and doesnt auto size to show the eintire report.
It works fine with IE, but we are a FireFox shop.
Anyone know how to fix this?

I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

I am using vb.net. and sql server 2005 reporting services. But the report in question uses the local report functionality.
I am writing a credit card processor that prints a slip at the end of the transaction. There is an annoying message form that pops up on the screen stating that it is "Printing Page 1 of Document" . It seems to be beyond my reach. Its position is the typical windows auto positioning (ala cascade). I dont want the user to see it.
How do i surpress this printing message? Is it embedded in the printer driver or spooler services? Is it surpressable from the reporting services local report configuration?
Thanx

I recently installed the Evaluation Edition of SQL Server 2005 x64 and it appears that MS Visual Studio 2005 is installed in stead of SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. When I choose new project the only template available is "Blank Solution". How do I get all the templates (i.e. Analysis Server Project, Integration Services Project, Report Model Project, Report Server Wizard project, etc.)?
Or would it be better to uninstall MS Visual Studio 2005 and attempt to reinstall BIDS?

I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.
I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?
I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?
I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.
How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.
Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.
My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.
Thanks
