SSRS Report Generator Hangs If There Are Around 10000 Pages That Needs To Be Converted To A PDF
Sep 25, 2007
Hi,
I am using SSRS to generate a 4 page statement... So i have a plan whose no. of Participants is 3271 rows... so While we try to export them to a PDF we will have around 13084 pages... but we cannot export so many pages at one time (it craps out). so right now we are breaking it up by start part and stop part and creating a pdf..
Is there a way that SSRS can handle so many pages at one go without any problems... if so how ??
Regards
Karen

Hi,
I'm encounter lately some weird behaviour of SSRS in BIDS as well as after deploying on Reporting Server.
I'm running basic classical SQL SSRS Reports with Oracle DB connection. My reports have header and footer pagination and well defined report layer configuration. All the reports are simple based on one table and some basic parameters passed to query.
In query builder from BIDS from data tab, the query is running fine without any other execution delays. Also the query is runnign fine in PL/Dev environment.
When I switch in "Preview" mode the report hangs in execution and just showing "Report is being generated" without any resuts. After a while is generating an execution error (after 20 min).
The behaviour is the same after deployment on Report Server .
I now...here it comes...the problem is intermitent...some times the report is working...but most of the times it hangs on execution.
I checked the report from top to bottom and nothing's wrong from design perspective.
On other reports I don't have this problem and I don't understand where to start to investigate.
Any suggestions...I'm stuck here.
Thanks

I created a report that uses a parameter to return a record per page basically, but it doesn't return all records that match the parameter. Thoughts?
Specifically, I have a table that tracks various sites my engineers are responsible for; each have about twelve. The problem is that every time I select an engineer I only see six pages (records). When I select two or three, then I see 12 or 18 pages, but still just six records per engineer.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Neil

I am very new to Reporting Services. When I set the report to landscape, either by setting width and height at 11 X 8.5 when in layout, or by setting landscape in page setup when I am in preview, a blank page prints in between each report page. I've checked the forum, and tried setting margins to 0, but have not had any success. I saw this response:
the body width plus margins should be less than the defined page width. but I'm not sure what settings are being referred to
Has anyone been able to solve this problem?
Thanks very much.

When I change a column from text to varchar using thedesign view of a table within Enterprise Manager thevarchar value (less than 8000 characters) appears in thecolumn but does SQL Server automatically delete the textvalues from their pages? If not are they removed by routine reindex/defrag orshould I create a new table, import from the text asvarchar and drop the old table to make sure the pagesstoring the original text version of the values aredeleted?..

Hello, I am new to MS SQL. I primarily used MySql, but my employer has MS SQL so i am trying to learn this. I kind of assumed that this was going to be similar to MSACCESS. My question is this. In access its easy to make forms and generate reports. Is there an "add-on" that makes it just as easy in MS SQL?
I see Crystal reports mentioned, but don't think my company would spend more money on this project.
Any help/Advice is greatly appreciated.

I am working with a report generator that is based on SQL Server 2000 anduses ASP as the UI. Basically we have a set of reports that end users canexecute through a web browser. In general the model works fine, but we arerunning into some scaling issues. What I'm trying to determine is, what is the optimal configuration for thissystem. It is currently a 2.4G Pentium with a large RAID and 1G of RAM. Wehave been using the "fixed" memory configuration, allocating 864M to SQL.This is on a Windows 2003 server box. This works fine when a "small" query or two is executed, but the performancesuffers terribly when several users try to run reports in parallel. A singlequery might take 10 minutes to run if nothing else is happening on the box,but if additional users log on an run reports, it's almost impossible topredict when the queries will finish.I am also looking at the effect of database size on performance, runningtests against a database with 1 month, 3 months, and say 12 months of data, running the same query against 2 databases in parallel. With the originalconfiguration, the results were all over the place, with the 12 monthdatabase outperforming the smaller dbs, while other times there was littledifference. It seems that once the system starts paging, and paging heavily,it's over; the system never "recovers" and queries that previously ran in afew minutes now take hours.I added 3 G more memory to the system, and modified boot.ini to include the/3GB switch. Now when I run the same tests, the results are much moreconsistent, as the system rarely ever has to swap. Then again I've neverseen it go past 1.7G in Task manager, making me think that any more than say2.5G of memory is a waste?Things we are trying to determine are:- in the SQL Server memory configuration, is Fixed better than Dynamic? Wehave read that Dynamic is not good at returning memory to the OS once it'sbeen allocated- What else can we do to optimize the performance for this application? Itseems to me if the indexes are properly designed, the database sizeshouldn't have that much impact on performance, but this appears to be trueonly to a point. In comparing the execution plans between say a 12 month anda 3 month database, the plans are sometimes dramatically different. I assumethis is due to the optimizer deciding that going directly to the base tablesand not using an index will result in better performance, when in reality, this doesn't always appear to be true.- Are there other SQL Server switches I should be tweaking? Is there somenumber of simultaneous queries that this configuration should be limited to?- What about other versions of SQL Server (e.g. Enterprise, Data Center, etc) would these buy us anything? Thanks for any advice,-Gary

I have an existing (working) SP that when I try to drop into the reoirt wizard gives me errors. The procedure runs in SQL management Studio, works in an existing rdl, even returns data in the repor wizard but also returns errors and therefore I can't continue. My work around is to drop it into an existing rdl; then I lose the Report Wizard features of generating a slick, quick repport.

Say I have a report with 3 pages, each page has a different dataset and takes some processing time.
is it possible to give the user the option to just run the first page say if thats all they need?
Reduce the processing time of the report to only that that is necessary?

I want to make the ReportServer and Reports pages secured i.e not allow anyone to access these pages via browser.
I login to a machine as user ABC. This user does not have permission on reports.
if this user accesses ReportServer or Reports, expected is that access should be denied unless I enter
an account that has been given permissions.
for e.x. following pages should be secured.
http://<reportserver>/Reports
http://<reportserver>/Reports/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2f<Report_Project>%2f<Report_Name>
http://<reportserver>/ReportServer
http://<reportserver>/ReportServer?%2f<Report_Project>&rs:Command=ListChildren
Actual result is that I am able to access these pages. When I click on the report I get the error (this is expected)
but then user ABC should be shown error on first page itself.
In short, for all the accounts that do not already have permissions on reports, the server should challenge me to enter an account and password.
Is there some setting in the configuration file?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance!

In Visual Studio, when previewing a report with a footer that has two rows of text, the footer appears to display correctly. When I export to Word, the footer for the first page looks as if it has shifted down slightly and the second line is missing. Subsequent pages show the footer correctly.

I has developed one report in SSRS in SSRS 2008 R2 and when I preview the report in report viewer in all pages Report Header is repeating, whereas when I export the same report to PDF strange for some pages header is missing.
When I searched in google for SSRS 2008 Microsoft agreed that it is a bug and they provided the hotfix. And this hotfix is not working for SSRS 2008 R2 as it is a higher edition but still I facing the same issue.

I understand that Multi-Select Parameters are converted behind the scenes to an In Clause when a report is executed. The problem that I have is that my multi-select string parameter is turned into an in claused filled with nvarchar/unicode expressions like:
Where columnName in (N'Value1', N'Value2', N'Value3'...)
This nvarchar / unicode expression takes what is already a fairly slow-performing construct and just drives it into the ground. When I capture my query with Profiler (so I can see the In Clause that is being built), I can run it in Management Studio and see the execution plan. Using N'Values' instead of just 'Value1', 'Value2','Value3' causes the query performance to drop from 40 seconds to two minutes and 40 seconds. It's horrible. How can I make it stop!!!?
Is there any way to force the query-rewriting process in Reporting Services to just use plain-old, varchar text values instead of forcing each value in the list to be converted on the fly to an Nvarchar value like this? The column from which I am pulling values for the parameter and the column that I am filtering are both just plain varchar.
Thanks,
TC

I need to create a simple dashboard report that will be displayed on a large screen.
My problem is that there can be potentially more records than the screen can display.
Based on how i size my report the report can be a single page with a scroll bar or mutliple pages.
My question is: Is there any way of automatically looping through pages or to automatically scroll down through the records in SSRS
If anyone has any experience of something like this or suggest a work around in SSRS could you please let me know
Thanks in advance

I have two separate reports, and they work fine. But I noticed that in one report, regardless of length, it will show up in the Report Manager as one page that you just scroll down through. The second report always shows up as more than one page, and you have to click through the pages to see everything. Is this some setting that I am unaware of? I have tried finding a difference between the two reports, but can't see why one would show up as a long continuous report and the other is divided into pages. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I have a report that pulls a customer balance.
In crystal there was a way to have the page not show up if it met a certain criteria(say if the balance was 0 or negative).
I'd rather not filter them in SQL because it takes a few calculations to figure out what their balance is, and I already have SRS doing that calculation.
So is there a way to have a report page not print based on a certain criteria?

I have a report that only has one page when previewed but when it's printed there are two pages. This is a problem because I get two printed pages to my report with "1 of 2 pages" on the first page and "2 of 2 pages" on the second but there is only data on the first page and the second has header and footer but no data.
Is there a way to force the report to fit everything on one page? Or some other setting I am missing?
Thanks.

HI,
I working on an Invoice report on the last page of each invoice, there is section the client cut off
that section has:
Company Logo
Company Address
Invoice number
INvoice date
Sub total
PSP tax
and Amount due
The Height of the page footer is 1.71823in
This is the work around that I did,
I added a page footer, put a rectangle in it, set the Visibility expression on =Globals.PageNumber < Globals.TotalPages, so it will only show on the last page.
My problem is, on each page I am getting the page footer space, the page footer does not
supress, it's just hidden and every page is having the page footer space in the buttom.
I also set the PrintOnLast page on the page Footer, but that did not work as well.
in print on other pages as well.
I also tried to fit that page footer in a very small Height, but that did not work too, the page footer does not auto grow and the info is getting cut.
Please help.

Greetings,
I have a report that is created that is typically 2-3 pages long. I've tried the "ExecutionInfo.NumPages" but it always results in "1" as the answer. Code is something like this:
============
...
Dim reportHistoryParameters As sqlprod1_res.ParameterValue() = Nothing
Dim SessionId As String
Dim execInfo As New ExecutionInfo
Dim execHeader As New ExecutionHeader()
Dim result As Byte() = Nothing
Dim format As String = "PDF"
Dim devInfo As String = "<DeviceInfo><Toolbar>False</Toolbar></DeviceInfo>"
Dim extension As String = ""
Dim encoding As String = ""
Dim mimeType As String = ""
Dim warnings As sqlprod1_res.Warning() = Nothing
Dim streamIDs As String() = Nothing
result = rs.Render(format, devInfo, extension, encoding, mimeType, warnings, streamIDs)
execInfo = rs.GetExecutionInfo()
Dim Pages As Integer = execInfo.NumPages
============
Also tried to count streams with the same result.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Forgive my lack of knowledge on SQL here...
We have a SQL server, version 7, that has 4 CPU's. Some of our staff have reports that must be run at random times before cutting checks etc. and these reports bog down the servers CPU's big time, enough so that we can not access the server via Enterprise Manager and at times not even through Query Analyzer. During this time of course other users can not do standard work of saving or accessing the database. Our Processor queue length never seems to go over 1 now. (We recently went from 2 to 4 CPU's do to a 1.4 average queue length).
I have heard that is is possible to limit the number of CPU's that certain query's or events can use. What is the proper terminology for this and can a person do this with limited knowledge? If this can be done during "working hours" so that during off hours query's can use all CPU's, even better.
Thanks,
Mike Gilbert

I've got a complex report with many subreports that is running on a reporting services 2005 machine with sp2 installed. The report was working well, producing a 2800 page report in under 10 minutes. I made a change to an expression in a table's column header and one change to the detail and the report stopped working. It would just hang for hours with no messages in the logs.
I tried to simplify what the report server had to do by removing the sum's to the database side's stored proc but that didn't work. I finally managed to get the report to work by removing a totals section to a subreport. I've also had the same hanging condition occur when I merged some columns in the table. I also found a workaround for this problem.
Is anyone else finding problems like this? They don't seem to be code related.
Is there a limit to how complex a report can be in reporting services or the PDF rendering part of the process?
Thanks for any info

Hi,
I have a master report that contains 4 sub reports. The first two subreports contains matrix controls that can (and will) spill over to a second page. With 5 columns of data the matrix subreports fit nicely onto one page, 6 or more columns and they will spill into a second page. The second two subreports will always fit onto one single page. All four subreports are inside a list control which will repeat for each structure. e.g. Each subreport will be rendered once per structure.
The master report renders perfectly (with no blank pages) whenever the two subreports with the matrix controls fit on one page each. However, whenever the matrix control subreports spill into a second page it causes the master report to insert a blank page after subreport 3 and 4, bare in mind subreport 3 and 4 both fit perfectly on a single page. I've check all margins and page widths etc.
The blank page problem only occurs whenever the matrix needs to span two pages.
Anybody encountered this problem or have any ideas how to fix it? I'm beginning to think it is a bug with reporting services.
Regards,
Adrian.

When viewing a report our users see that it is x number of pages, however when they print the report is actually y number of pages. For example once a report is ran, it says that it is 43 pages, however in actuality it is 62 pages. If they only want to print the last page, they choose to print 43 from the print dialog box, but that gives them a page in the middle of the report not the last page. Is there a way to remedy this?
Thank you,
Kaysie

Hi forum members.
I'm a new SQL Reporting user and could use some guidance.
Here is a simple explanation of my application: imagine a report which prints out a grade report for each of 10 students. Depending on how many notes a teacher makes on the student's individual grade report, each student's report might be 1 or 2 pages long.
To create this report I just used a List report item and laid out a typical grade report and filled in the appropriate fields (name, teacher, etc.) from my dataset query.
When I run the report, it is running great and the students and their grade reports all print out.
The problem I am running into is I want to make sure each student's name is on page 2 if the grade report for that student goes more than 1 page (so pages aren't separated from each other or mixed up). I tried using a Report Footer, but that just put the first student's name at the bottom of every page. I could put a textfield at the bottom the list control but that would just appear at whatever length page 2 ended up being (basically you could have a "footer" at mid-page if the whole list only took up 1.5 pages).
How can I create a footer for each set of pages? Basically this would be a "footer" to the list control itself.
Thanks in advance!
Dave

I wrote a report today containing one grouping. Everything appears all right in the report preview, except that every other page is "blank", i.e., shows only the page header and page footer; all grouping and detail information is missing.Â
The data on the page following the blank page seems to pick up where the previous non-blank page left off, so all information seems to be present within the report. The report width and height properties are typical portrait-style  -- 8.5 x 11 inches. The columns do not "run off the edge" of the report page boundary. I haven't selected any page break for the grouping, as the grouping detail is typically only a few rows long, and would otherwise result in a very large number of pages.Â

Hi there.
We have a report that has been working fine for almost a year and just recently we found a bug that when we print, the 1st 3 pages each have a single line from the table header and then the details of the table print.
The report table does have 2 subreports in detail rows. We have diligently checked to make sure that the sizes fit in both the main report and the subreports and we know that the report version did not change.
After a little digging we discovered that we recently patched RS to be version 9.2.3042. When we run the report on another RS server that is running 9.00.1406.00, it works fine. Do you know if this could be the cause? If so, is there another patch that addresses the issue?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

Hi All
I have a report that looks and works fine in the native 'screen layout' but when I select the Print Layout option, a blank page is inserted after each page. These blank pages contain the header and footer, but not the body section of the report. Has anyone else seen this sort of thing? Is there something in my report layout causing this, or is it a bug in the Print Layout rendering?
Thanks much

I am generating a Report from Sql Data Source in Sql Server 2005 and viewing the Report in Report viewer control of Visual Studio 2005.
The data in the Data Source contains string with multiple spaces (for example €œ Test String €œ) but when they get rendered in Report viewer control, multiple spaces gets converted to single space €? Test String €œ.
I tried following solutions
1) Replacing spaces with €œ €?
2) Inserting <pre> tag before the string and </pre> tag after the string (Also tried <Pre> instead of <pre>)
But in all the cases result is same. The Report Viewer control is showing €œ €? instead of space and €œ<Pre>€? tag instead of preserving spaces.
Please provide me a solution so that spaces can be preserved in Report Viewer.
