SSRS And ASP.Net And Windows Integrated Authentication Failure In Internet Explorer
Jun 1, 2006
I have a very confusing problem that I'm going to attempt to relay concisely:
I have a LAN on which I'm running an Intranet web site built in ASP.Net 2.0 and using SSRS / Sql Server 2005 on the same server.
The name of the box is "warehouse" or "warehouse.mydomain.us." When I ping "warehouse," I get a response from 137.86.166.8, as I should. Likewise, I get a response from 137.86.166.8 when I ping "warehouse.mydomain.us." If I do a "ping -a" on 137.86.166.8, it correctly resolves to "warehouse.mydomain.us." Based on the facts presented in this paragraph, I believe that my DNS is working as expected.
Using IE (6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519) with "low" security settings, I navigate to http://warehouse.mydomain.us/lex/ (Lex is the name of the app) and it authenticates me to the index page (which calls the SSRS web service to get and display a list of available reports), except that I get the login prompt three times. If I hit F5 (refresh), I get three more login prompts and then I get a 401.1 error. From this point, no matter what I do, I can not see the index page again without closing and restarting IE.
I know that IE only passes credentials to certain sites, so I add my domain (http://warehouse.mydomain.us/) to the Local Intranet list ( Tools->Internet Options->Security->Local Intranet->Advanced) and then I can refresh and see my index page once, but I still get 3 login attempts and then the same thing happens -- I refresh and go through 3 logins and then get a 401.1.
If I now change my address bar to read http://137.86.166.8/lex, I get a single login and it works like a champ. This makes me think that there's a DNS problem, so I open up Mozilla Firefox and wouldn't you know it -- Firefox works like a champ all around -- one single sign-in, it keep credentials between Lex and SSRS, and it appears to use the DNS correctly. However, I can't use Firefox because I can't get any of the SSRS reports to look like they're supposed to in Mozilla-based browsers.
Argh.
I have set my IE securtiy settings to "Low." I have added the primary domain to the Local Intranet list and also to the Trusted Sites list (but you can't do both at the same time). I have even added the internal IP to my "hosts" file.
Does anyone know anything that might be a help to me in getting this figured out?
Other notes of interest:
My machine is an XP machine, but is not on the domain, but I do have a valid domain login that I use and it works in Firefox without problem.

Hi all,
I've got two applications which both have a database on my MS SQL 2000 server. The problem is, one application must use Windows Integrated Authentication (which it is currently using and cannot be changed) whilst the other application which I'm trying to configure must use a SQL password.
Since the server has already been configured to use Windows Integrated Authentication for the existing database and application, how do I configure the other database to use the SQL password?
Thanks.

Hi all,
My work is using a shared application
which accesses a MSSQL 2000 database. To access the application, the
folder on the Windows 2003 Server is shared and users can access the
folder through a shared drive.
For the application to access the
database, it uses an ODBC connection to the MSSQL server which
originally used the SA password.
We have recently switched to using
Windows Integrated Authentication because we believe it offers a
higher level of security. However the only way in which we have been
able to enable this is to add the windows users to the SQL server.
The problem with this is that the
application sets permissions for individual users on what records
they can see within the database. We have found that by adding the
windows users to the SQL Server, they can bypass the permissions the
set by the application by simply using any application that can use
an ODBC connection, such as Enterprise Manager, and see all the
database.
One way around this would be to set up
domains of users with access privileges to the tables which reflect
the permissions set by the application, and configuring a view of the
data so they may only see the records that they have permissions to.
However to do this would require a high administrative cost to ensure
that changes made in the application are reflected in the privileges
of the SQL server.
Instead, is there a way the SQL server
can authenticate that the ODBC connection is coming from the correct
application using Windows Integrated Authentication?
This would allow the applcation to
determine security, and stop users from connecting to the SQL server
using other applications.
Alternatively, can the SQL server,
using Windows Integrated Authentication, also ask the application to
supply a username and password?
Any help with this matter would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

If my SQL Server authentication is windows integrated authentication, whenever my application makes a connection to SQL server does it contact the windows active directory domain controller to authenticate the windows user account? How does windows integrated authentication work in the background?

Hi,I have a peculiar problem (or maybe not). I have SQL clients installedon XP boxes. These XP boxes are a member of let us say "XYZ" domain.SQL Server is installed on one of the boxes having Windows 2000 Serverin the same network. The installation has been done on local domainaccount. Since SQl Server has been installed with Windowsauthentication, what happens if the XYZ domain fails. Will it bepossible for all clients to access the database present on SQL Serverin the Win 2K box. I think I have made myself clear upto some extent.Please throw light on how to accomplish the connectivity between SQLclients and server in case of domain failure.Regards,Vinodi

I have an acctest server (XX-ATS-ASSHP102) running SSRS, SQL DB Engine & SSAS. I'm trying to configure NATIVE SQL Reporting Services to use a data source with Windows Integrated mode towards a SSAS cube on the same server. When I use the servername (or 127.0.0.1) it works perfectly. But when I use the DNS name bidb.acctest.internal it fails with the error "The connection either timed out or was lost.". The profiler on SSAS says "anonymous login" so the Kerberos login is broken at some point.The weird thing is that this works perfectly in production environment, but I've missed something in the ACCTEST environment.The SPN for the serviceaccount running SSAS has correctect SPN:s:
MSOLAPSvc.3/bidb.acctest.internal
MSOLAPSvc.3/bidb.acctest.internal:MSSQLSERVER
MSOLAPSvc.3/XX-ATS-ASSHP102
MSOLAPSvc.3/XX-ATS-ASSHP102.XX.XXXXXXXXXXX.net
MSOLAPSvc.3/XX-ATS-ASSHP102.XX.XXXXXXXXXXX.net:MSSQLSERVER
MSOLAPSvc.3/XX-ATS-ASSHP102:MSSQLSERVER
The SSRS account has delegation with "any service". No account has the "sensitive" flag.DNS names are A-records, except the hostname for the SSRS site which is a c-name, but it's identical in production.The "impersonate client after login" and "replace token" permissions are correct in the policy.The rsreportserver.config says:
<Authentication>
<AuthenticationTypes>
<RSWindowsNTLM/>
</AuthenticationTypes>
<RSWindowsExtendedProtectionLevel>Off</RSWindowsExtendedProtectionLevel>
<RSWindowsExtendedProtectionScenario>Proxy</RSWindowsExtendedProtectionScenario>
<EnableAuthPersistence>true</EnableAuthPersistence>
</Authentication>
both in production and in acctest env..

Help! On my desktop some security warning came up and my friend clicked "ok" when it said "block". Apparently it was warning her that internet explorer was trying to contact the internet. So...now internet explorer cannot display anything and it is the only browser I have on my computer. I am so frustrated I can't figure out what on earth I can change to fix this. Please...someone help me figure out why I can't contact the internet? My internet connection is fine, and the troubleshooting feature in explorer keeps telling me so.

Greetings All,
I installed SQL 2000 with SP4 on a 2003 Server. I added a NT Group to the Server and created 2 users exactly the same in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager.
My issuse is with the other user I created. When I go to a database in the Server Enterprise Manager and right click on tables, and select New Table with my user, the New Table window pops up with no problem. When the other user follows the exact same steps, Internet Explorer opens up and says page not found.
Is this an SQL Issue or maybe an IIS issue?
Thanks in advance.

Hey,
I'm trying to enter reports using Internet Explorer 7, but it shows me an empty Document map.
When I'm trying to enter the same reports from other computer using Internet Explorer 6, the Document map is filled.
I compared the security options on both machines, and also added the URL of the server to the Trusted sites, but the problem still exists.
The server environment is:
WINDOWS 2003 R2 (SP2)
MSSQL 2000 (SP4) + REPORTING SERVICES
I'm trying to access the report using Windows XP (SP2)
Anyone ever handled this issue?
Any ideas how to solve it?
Thanks in advanced,

My Name is Rajesh. I
have got an Issue on I.E 6.0. I need your assistance. I have Two Multiple
Selected Drop-Down List (DDL) on an HTML Page. One DDL contains around 3000
Rows(values). If I am transffering All values from one DDL to another DLL
through For-Loop by using Javascript it takes around 1 Minute in I.E 6.0 whereas same
Logic works not more than 1 Second in
Mozilla/FireFox.
Could you please guide me to solve the
above mentioned issue in I.E. Here below i have attached the functionality part
also...
strSelSource, strSelTarget are two Drop-Down List
for(var
i=0;i<document.getElementById(strSelSource).options.length;i++)
{
intTempLen =
document.getElementById(strSelTarget).options.length
document.getElementById(strSelTarget).options[intTempLen] = new
Option(document.getElementById(strSelSource).options.text,document.getElementById(strSelSource).options.value)
document.getElementById(strSelSource).options = null;
i--;
}
Above Loop takes around 1 Minute in I.E 6.0 but not more than 1 Second
in Mozilla/FireFox.
I am eagerly waiting for your
response.

I have a report in which I have a link like:
Code Snippet
="javascript:void(window.open('<myURL>', '_blank'))"
Now I have two problems:
This link doesn't work in IE7, it does simply nothing... (In IE6 a new window is opened, it works as expected)
I've deployed the report on another reporting server and this time in IE6 a new window is opened but the URL is equals to "javascript:void....." so IE displays an error message ("unable to display page...."). Is there something to configure on the server?Thanks in advance

I am running a report which takes a long time to render. It has 500K rows in it that need to be summed and grouped. After 5 minutes IE prompts for a password. I set the report time out to 15 min just to see if it would make a difference. I even set the IIS timeout to an to 15 min as well.
I know that its bad to run a report this big, but I'm just curious why it prompts for a password. In case a user runs the report. Report uses dates so its possible they could go way back and not realize its 500K rows. I am assuming it is an IE issue with the browser and found a registry edit, but I don't really want to edit registries on my users' computers.

From what I have understood, Reporting Services could be configured to use Basic Authentication. In this way, a user can access a RS-server across the internet and he/she will be prompted for a valid username/password when trying to access.
However, from what I can understand this username and password will be sent uncrypted over the Internet (from the client machine to the RS-server), right?
My problem is, I need to give access to users acress the internet to a RS-server. The users uses all kind of operating systems (Windows, Linux, MacOS tec). And the communication needs to be encrypted.
How would you recommend me to implement security for this solution? I guess some kind of "Forms authentication" will have to be used? But how to make sure the data traffic is encrypted? And where do you recommend me to store the username and passwords? In an Active Directory on the server side, or in a separate database on the server side?

We're trying to determine the best way to implement an authentication mechanism for our reporting services solution. Basically, we are exposing a web application to the internet, and allowing a forms authenticated user to access our report server somewhere within our intranet to view reports. I've browsed msdn and found that there are two approaches:
1. create a custom authentication extension for reporting services
2. create a restricted domain user that is allowed to access the report server
Going with approach 2 and assuming I'm using a ReportViewer control, in order to authenticate with the report server (using the one domain user created specifically for report server access), are we supposed to just provide an instance of an object implementing IReportServerCredential containing the domain user information to the Credentials property of the ReportViewer.ServerReport before accessing the report? Is this the correct way to implement approach 2? Also, if implementing approach 2 is so simple compared to approach 1, why would anyone choose to implement custom authentication extension if they don't need fine-grain access control on the report server level?
Thanks for any help and suggestions!

Hello,
(Using win2k, sqlserver2k, framework 1.1)
I have an fairly data-heavy application that uses Windows authentication (Trusted connection/aspnet account) to connect to Sql Server. The site uses IIS basic authentication.
On the dev server everything works fine but when I move to the live server things get strange and it starts to crawl along. (Pages load OK but then it just crawls as it loads the datagrids etc. Sometimes it brings back incomplete/incorrect data )
BUT When I use Sql Authentication to connect to Sql Server and there is no problem at all!
Ok, there is something obviously wrong with the live server (which is identical setup to dev)but I dont know where to start.
Any ideas??

My problem is when i open sql server management studio and try to connect to my default instance using windows authentication and database engine, an 18456 error occurs.
I enabled all the protocols and all the ports
I disabled windows firewall and antivirus (eset nod32)

does anybody know why MS doesnt consider Basic Authentication a viable solution for Inter/Xtra net access to RS? I'm re reading the documentation at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb283249.aspx but so far am not getting what the Security Extension options accomplish that can't be accomplished with much less effort using some form of Basic Authentication.

Well, I have SQL Server 2005 SP2 Reporting Services installed and configured in sharepoint integrated mode, so I am deploying reports in sharepoint libraries. Also I configured sharepoint to use forms authentication with builtin AspNetSqlMembership provider, but after this action I couldnot open reports through sharepoint library, instead of this, error was displayed mentioned below. I searched and found hotfix Cumulative Update 3 build 3186 for this issue, request it from microsoft support and applied it, but nothing has changed!
Error I have been experiencing is following:
An unexpected error occurred while connecting to the report server.
Verify that the report server is available and configured for
SharePoint integrated mode. --> The request failed with the error
message:

<html><head><title>Object moved</title></head><body>
<h2>Object moved to <a href="/_layouts/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=
%2f_vti_bin
%2fReportServer%2fReportService2006.asmx">here</a>.</h2>
</body></html>
I continued to dig and find out that this hotfix should update Microsoft.ReportingServices.SharePoint.UI.WebParts.dll from version 9.0.3042.0 to new version 9.0.3180.0, but when I checked file version after applying hotfix, it remained the same as was before i.e. 9.0.3042.0. Apparently this cumulative update does not fix this issue.
anyone has any idea how to solve it? Thanks in advance.
sorry for my poor english :-)

Hi All,
Can we implement a table level (object) security on the groups of the windows NT domain using the integrated windows NT security so that one group has
the permission over one table to update ,select ,delete the information and other group has permission has for some other table.
Thanks
Ajay
