Sa Account And Hard Coded Application
Mar 27, 2001
Hello I was hoping somebody out there could help me …..
We have a hard-coded application which uses the Sa account with no password. We want to add password to Sa – but when we do get users/DBAs calling us saying the application does not work.
How can we add password to Sa and get the application to work - unfortunately we do not have scripts for the application or know of the whereabouts of the developers.
Any suggestions/ideas – will be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Khalid

Is it possible to force parameters into the reports so enabling me to force a user id value into every report that is picked up from the list. The user ID is a system value and I don't want end users having any knowledge of it?

Hi there,
The postage and packing scheme being used at the site I'm working on depends on the customer's location.
If they're in the UK they get once scheme and if they're in Ireland they get another. Furthermore, if they're anywhere else they get another scheme.
A customer's country is indicated by a 'countryID' stored in the main customer row in the database. (This ID references a country in the Countries table.)
Thus, I was wondering if it is acceptable to hard code the country pk of the UK and Ireland into the formular which works out the postage and packing?
At present, for a similar issue, I've even hard coded the the pk of UK and Ireland into some Javascript running at the client.
Is it fair design to work with a hard coded pk like this?
Cheers,

I thought a stored procedure was taking much too long to complete. So, I moved the main query to Query Analyzer and found that when I substituted actual values for variables that my SELECT statement ran in seconds. Just to test, I created DECLARE statements, set the variables equal to the same values, re-ran the SELECT statement and it took over a minute. Even the Execution Plan was much different. Any suggestions?

I want to be able to return the rows from a table that have been updated since a specific time. My query returns results in less than 1 minute if I hard code the reference timestamp, but it keeps spinning if I load the reference timestamp in a table. See examples below (the "Reference" table has only one row with a value 2014-09-30 00:00:00.000)
select * from A where ReceiptTS > '2014-09-30 00:00:00.000'
select * from A where ReceiptTS > (select ReferenceTS from Reference)

Hi. I've looked all over MSDN, newsgroups and the web but I can't find the answer to a problem that I am having.
The application that I am working on used both transactional and merge replication. I want to avoid hard coding passwords into an application that kicks off the pull replication on the client machine.
The client machines are all using SQL Server 2005 Express. The other machine is running SQL Server Standard. The passwords and login details are specified in the subscription properties in the Management Studio.
A fragment of the code is posted below. The transactional sychronization works fine without having to specify any passwords - however the merge replication does not work if both of the passwords are not specified.
private void SynchButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Set up the subscriber connection details. subscriberConnection = new ServerConnection(subscriberName); try { // Connect to the Subscriber. subscriberConnection.Connect(); // Do the transactional subscription synchronisation independantly of the // merge subscription replication. try { transPullSubscription = new TransPullSubscription(subscriptionDbName, publisherName, publicationDbName, transPublicationName, subscriberConnection); // If the pull subscription and the job exists, start the agent job. if (transPullSubscription.LoadProperties() && transPullSubscription.AgentJobId != null) { TransSynchronizationAgent transSyncAgent = transPullSubscription.SynchronizationAgent; transSyncAgent.Synchronize(); } else { } } catch (Exception ex) { } // Do the merge subscription synchronisation independantly of the // transactional subscription replication. try { // Set up the subscription details for the merge subscription (bi-directional data) mergePullSubscription = new MergePullSubscription(subscriptionDbName, publisherName, publicationDbName, mergePublicationName, subscriberConnection); // If the pull subscription and the job exists, start the agent job. if (mergePullSubscription.LoadProperties() && mergePullSubscription.AgentJobId != null) { MergeSynchronizationAgent mergeSyncAgent = mergePullSubscription.SynchronizationAgent; mergeSyncAgent.DistributorPassword = "<<password>>"; mergeSyncAgent.PublisherPassword = "<<password>>"; mergeSyncAgent.Synchronize(); }etc etc..
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appeciated. Thanks.

Hi There,
Our company deals with financial education and typically has 9 different databases which have some cross referenced stored procedures. Every time we replicate Production database into TEST and DEV environments, we had to manually update the database references in Stored procedures. and it usually takes atleast a week and until then all the dev and test work has to wait.
Hence, I wanted to write a script, Here the code below.
-- These two variables must contain a valid database name.
DECLARE @vchSearch VarChar(15),
@vchReplacement VarChar(15)
SET @vchSearch = 'Search'
SET @vchReplacement = 'Replacement'
/*
-- Select the Kaplan Database Names in the Current Server
*/
DECLARE @tblDBNames TABLE (vchDBName VarChar(30))
INSERT INTO
@tblDBNames
SELECT
Name
FROM
MASTER.DBO.SYSDATABASES
WHERE
Has_DBAccess(Name)=1
And Name IN ( 'DB_DEV', 'DB_TEST', 'DB_PROD', 'WEBDB_DEV', 'WEBDB_TEST', 'WEBDB_PROD' , 'FINDB_DEV', 'FINDB_TEST', 'FINDB_PROD')
--SELECT * FROM @DBNames
IF @vchSearch NOT IN (SELECT vchDBName FROM @tblDBNames)
BEGIN
PRINT 'Not a Valid Search DB Name'
GOTO Terminate
END
IF @vchReplacement NOT IN (SELECT vchDBNAME FROM @tblDBNames)
BEGIN
PRINT 'Not a Valid Replacement DB Name'
GOTO Terminate
END
-- We have Valid DB Names, lets proceed...
--USE @vchReplacement
SET @vchSearch = '%' + @vchSearch + '..%'
SET @vchReplacement = '%' + @vchReplacement + '..%'
-- Get Names of Stored Procedures to be altered
DECLARE @tblSProcNames TABLE (vchSPName VarChar(100))
INSERT INTO
@tblSProcNames
SELECT
DISTINCT so.Name
FROM
SYSOBJECTS so
INNER JOIN SYSCOMMENTS sc
ON sc.Id = so.Id
WHERE
so.XType='P'
AND sc.Text LIKE @vchSearch
ORDER BY
so.name
-- Now, the table @tblSprocNames has the names of stored procedures to be updated.
-- And we have to Some HOW ?!! grab the stored proc definition and use REPLACE() to
-- update the database reference
-- Then, use cursors to loop through each stored proc and upate the reference
Now, I have got stuck how to extract the body of a stored procedure into a variable.
Please Help.... I dont want spend weeks of time in the future to do this work manually.

I'm trying to insert data into a table from two tables into a single table along with a hard coded value.
insert into TABLE1

VALUES
((select SYSTEM_ID from TABLE2 where
AUTHOR IN (select SYSTEM_ID from TABLE2 where USER_ID
=('USER1'))),(select SYSTEM_ID from TABLE2 where USER_ID

I get the following-

Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

Do I need to use a cursor?

Hi,
I know it's bad to use the built-in SA account to access SQL Server from my ASP.NET application.
I did some reading but would like some suggestions as well. One article I read talked about Application roles in SQL Server. Is this the best way to handle SQL Server access for read/write/update/delete privileges from an ASP.NET application?
If this is the way to go, how do I set it up? Can anyone suggest a good web site to read up on this?

Hey guys. I've an application which uses an account named Uaccount1. I've given it db_datareader and db_datawriter permissions to the tables. I've given it execute permissions to all sp's I've given it reference permissions to the symmetric key. And I gave it reference permissions on the certificate. At this point, it can't see the certificate. If I give control permission to the account for the certificate, it works perfect. Is it necessary to do that or am I missing something. Our security is based on symmetric key and certificates...
Thank you
Tej.

During install of SQL Server 2005, we can of course use a domain account or the built-in system account for running the services. I lean toward domain for obvious reaons but would like to know a +/- to each option and why I'd choose one over the other and what consequences or limitations one may encounter if I choose one over the other.

I have been running a script in SQL Server 2000 as sa also as a Active Directory user who has administrator rights (I tested both approaches SQL Server then Windows Authentication) in Query Analyser which grants execute rights to the stored procedures within the database instance and Query Analyser does not give any errors when I run the script. I have made sure that each transaction has a go after it. I then return to Enterprise Manager, check the rights (I apply them to roles so that when we create another SQL Server user we just grant him/her rights to the role) and discover that the role has not been granted the rights. I seems to be occurring only with 2 of the procedures. Is there a known bug that might be causing this?
yours sincerely

I would like to have a stored procedure to run a shared VB file, which will check a refrence value from
a SQL Server table every hour, then redirect the web page to an error page if the reference value
is equal to e.g. 'E'.
My question is: a S.P. can update a SQL Server table, but can a S.P. 'run' a shared VB file to redicret
a web page automatically? How?

Hi all, i hope you can help me.
Basically a dts package has been setup that pulls in data from another companies server, this data requires to be on-demand i.e individual users can pull in updates of the data when they require it.
I am using xp_cmdshell and dtsrun to pull in the data. This obviouly works fine for me as i am a member of sysadmin.
Books online quotes " SQL Server Agent proxy accounts allow SQL Server users who do not belong to the sysadmin fixed server role to execute xp_cmdshell"
So i went to the SQL Server Agent Properties 'Job System' tab and unchecked 'Non-sysadmin job step proxy account' and entered a proxy account.
The proxy account has been setup as a Windows user with local administrator privilages and even a member of the sysadmin server role - just in case.
Now when i log onto the db with my test account - a non-sysadmin - and attempt to run the stored proc to import the data i recieved the message 'EXECUTE permission denied on object 'xp_cmdshell', database 'master', owner 'dbo' '
hmm... so basically i have either misunderstood BoL or there is something not quite right in my setup.
I have search the net for a few days now and yet i can find no solution.
Can anyone help?

Hi there,BOL notes that in order for replication agents to run properly, theSQLServerAgent must run as a domain account which has privledges to loginto the other machines involved in replication (under "SecurityConsiderations" and elsewhere). This makes sense; however, I waswondering if there were any repercussions to using duplicate localaccounts to establish replication where a domain was not available.Anotherwords, create a local windows account "johndoe" on both machines(with the same password), grant that account access to SQL Server onboth machines, and then have SQL Server Agent run as "johndoe" on bothmachines. I do not feel this is an ideal solution but I havecircumstances under which I may not have a domain available; mypreliminary tests seem to work.Also, are there any similar considerations regarding the MSSQLSERVERservice, or can I always leave that as local system?Dave

I have a situation that I have discovered in our QA database that I need to resolve. When I looked at the Activity Monitor for our server, I discovered that a process is running under a domain user account for one of our .Net applications. The problem is that that domain user account has not been created as a SQL login account on the server. I am trying to figure out how someone can log in to the database server with a domain user account that has not been added to SQL Server as a login account.
Does anyone have any insight on this? I don't like the idea of someone being able to create domain account that can access the database without me granting them specific access.

But I need to be able to get information from more fields than the field refnr. How can I specify more fields? I need to get other fields from produkter.

I know that the person who set up this server did not give enough space to the c drive, here is the problem. I am running sql server 7.0 which has 30 GB of data in the d drive. I need to reconfigure the NT hard drive so I can allocate 2 GB for C drive and 42 GB for D drive.
What is the best, safe method to accomplish this task.

Hi,
I have ran
1. xp_fixeddrives and got the result
drive MB free
----- -----------
C 1708
D 16311
2. I ran Backup Wizard in EM and able to see only above drives
3. But if ran backup in EM able to see more than 10 Drives(like C,D,H,I,J,M,N and etc).
Why I can able to see those difference?.
How do I find out exactly how many drives are there in this server without directly going to that server?.
I appreciated your valuable answere.

Hi, I'm looking for a way to check the free space left on the hard drives and then if needed send an alert to notify when we need to free up some space. I played around with the performance monitor and realized I could do it that way but I think you would have to leave the performance monitor running all the time and I'm not sure if I want to do that. I also read about the xp_fixeddrives proc that displays how much free space is available but then I don't know what to do from there? Does anyone have any recommendations for the best way to do this.

Right, I have this database that I need to sort, I'll give you an example:
ID Name Value
2312 Sega 200
5678 Blizzard 215
3412 Bullfrog 210
6798 Nintendo 195
Now, what I need to do is to sort it, perform calculations on and I need the list to be sorted with a predefined post as the top result, say like this one time:
ID Name Value
3412 Bullfrog 200
2312 Sega 210
5678 Alizzard 215
6798 Nintendo 195
as you can see sorting it alphabetically would lead to
5678 Alizzard 215
3412 Bullfrog 210
6798 Nintendo 195
2312 Sega 200
(or the other way around if you play with asc/desc)
by id would be
2312 Sega 200
3412 Bullfrog 210
5678 Alizzard 215
6798 Nintendo 195
There aren't any top or bottom values sort of speak for the posts I want to be on top, so...how to sort this like this?
3412 Bullfrog 200
2312 Sega 210
5678 Alizzard 215
6798 Nintendo 195
the order after the top one is irrelevant.
Now...I know I could sort this by doing something like
"Select * FROM blablabla WHERE Name = 'Bullfrog'"
and then doing "Select * FROM blablabla" and then just bypassing that post in asp/php code or whatever, but that would be a pain for me to do as I have to perform some massive calculations and the code would be alot larger then needed be
Its a brain teaser allright...can you help me out?

Hi there,
I am using this stored procedure in sql.
I have 6 tables. One is called employees. This is what I need to be able to do. A user enters a new employee into a winform, picks a role, division, manager, technicalskill set and applications from the drop down lists and hits save. The employee table should be the only one updated and has these columns only.( firstname, lastname, dvisionid, managerid, roleid,techskillsid, and appID). At the moment what is happening is its saving the firstname, lastname correctly, but the rest of the ID columns are null. It is updating the other tables with the string entered but what I need is the emplyee table to update with the corresponding ids. Is this alot more complicated then i thought? If I try to replace the role with roleid etc, it will just tell me I can't convert string to int which is understandable. How do I do this?
CREATE PROCEDURE sp_InsertEmployee
@Firstname nvarchar(50),
@Lastname nvarchar(50),
@Role nvarchar(50),
@Manager nvarchar(50),
@Division nvarchar(50)
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;
INSERT INTO EMPLOYEES (FIRSTNAME, LASTNAME) VALUES (@FIRSTNAME, @LASTNAME)
INSERT INTO [ROLE] ([ROLE]) VALUES (@ROLE)
INSERT INTO MANAGER (MANAGER) VALUES (@MANAGER)
INSERT INTO DIVISION(DIVISION) VALUES (@DIVISION)
END
GO
My C# code is like this:
SqlCommand sqlC = new SqlCommand("sp_InsertEmployee", myConnection);
sqlC.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
sqlC.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@Firstname", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50, "Firstname"));
sqlC.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@Lastname", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50, "Lastname"));
sqlC.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@RoleID", SqlDbType.Int, 50, "RoleID"));
sqlC.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@ManagerID", SqlDbType.Int, 50, "ManagerID"));
sqlC.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@DivisionID", SqlDbType.Int, 50, "DivisionID"));
//sqlC.Parameters[0].Value = 4;
sqlC.Parameters[0].Value = FirstnameText.Text;
sqlC.Parameters[1].Value = Lastnametext.Text;
sqlC.Parameters[2].Value = RolecomboBoxTest.Text;
sqlC.Parameters[3].Value = ManagercomboBox1.Text;
sqlC.Parameters[4].Value = DivisioncomboBox2.Text;
int i = sqlC.ExecuteNonQuery();
//sqlC.ExecuteNonQuery();
Sorry for pasting so much.
