View 3 RepliesA friend of my self asked me how he can save a password not as clear text. He wanted to encrypt the password and save the encrypted string in the database.
How can he do this. I heard from somebody that he might do this with SSIS. Unfortunately I doesn't understand what he ment. Maybe somebody can help me here.

I have a USERS table on an SQL Server 2000 with two fields, USER_NAME AND PASSWORD, and I want to encrypt the passwords when I stored them on the table.
I used {Encrypt N ‘MyPassWord’} to encrypt the password and it looks that the passwords have been encrypted.
Went, however, I execute a SELECT statement for a specific password all passwords are returned.
This is a small sable code:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CREATE TABLE dbo.Users
(
User_Name nvarchar (10) NOT NULL ,
PassWord nvarchar (50) NOT NULL
)
GO
INSERT INTO USERS (User_Name, PassWord)
VALUES ('MyName', {Encrypt N 'MyPassWord'})
GO
INSERT INTO USERS (User_Name, PassWord)
VALUES ('YourName', {Encrypt N 'YourPassWord'})
GO
SELECT * FROM USERS
WHERE PassWord = {Encrypt N 'MyPassWord'}
(2 row(s) affected)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately both (All) rows are return
Is it any way to encrypt password and be able to select them?
Is it any other way to encrypt data into the database?
Thank You
Elias
I'm having an issue with an SSIS package. It supposed to run on a schedule and pull data from one server (SQL1) to another (SQL2). Unfortunately, I'm using a shared server and I'm not that admin. So I'm limited to what I can try. According to the admin, my package is not retaining the password when I build it. It runs fine in debug mode on my machine, but will not run on his. I found this link...
http://vyaskn.tripod.com/sql_server_2005_making_ssis_packages_portable.htm
... and tried it. It describes how to create an XML for validation. Still no good. He sent a screenshot indicating error code: DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTION and OLE DB Source failed validation. In effect, login failed for SQL1 and it could not pull data.
How do I get the package to retain login data?
thanks!
I'm stuck with a very annoying problem - any help would be greatly appreciated.
I created a package using Business Intelligence Project. The package reads from a Flat File source and saves to a SQL Server table.
The package has a Data Source for the database connection. In this I have opted to save the password.
When I run the package in VS on my machine it works fine.
I then deployed the package to our SQL 2005 database server using the Deployment Utility. It then appeared in the MSDB section.
I then tested the package ran from my machine using Management Studio and all was fine.
However, if I try to run the package from the database server itself I run into problems. Specifically, the log gives me the following error:
"The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "<My Database>" failed with error code 0xC0202009"
....and further down I get:
"Error: an OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E4D. An OLE DB record is available. Source "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult 0x80040E4D Description: "Login failed for user 'sa'.".
What seems to be happening is the password is not being saved in the connection string. Sure enough, if I look at the Connection Managers section of the Execute Package Utility in Management Studio, then my database connection manager has only a User ID specified and no "pwd=". If I add "pwd=<my password>" to this connection string here then the package works.
How do I get this password to be remembered by the Package?
Incidentally, I have also tried writing a VB.NET program to call the package programmatically. Using this, I have tried to set the connection string of my Data Source in the code to try to get round the problem above. However, even after this I still find the only machine the package runs on is mine, and everywhere else it fails to connect.
Please help! Thanks in advance.

Hm... I use SSIS packages to manipulate some data from one SQL server to another. I chosed "DontSaveSensitiveData" and I am using a XML configuration file.
The problem is I have to edit the file with notepad manually and add the password for my SQLconnections in it.
Is it possible to do this from the Business Intelligence Studio instead?
I tried to edit the connections and set and save password there but it won't save it to the XML configuration file.
Or perhaps it is intended to be edited in notepad and passwords set manually to it?
I would like to create a database & save to that data base the ratings of articles that are given by the users.
(I want to create a recommendation system.)
I am using joomla! How do I do this ?

Hello,
A database EntryForm has a MenuStrip. How could the Menustrip implemented that it would have a Save and Restore data to the database for backup purposes?
What is the Menustrip for? None of the standard Items seems to work. What can be printed or previewed?
This question is NOT about how to save the data into the database from the EntryForm.
Thanks for any answer,
Hi guys,
Is there anyway to allow SQL Server users to change their own passwords without giving them rights to "db_securityadmin" ?
Our M$ adviser suggested creating our own app using SQL NS and DMO to do it.
Is there any easier method, reference, download sample from the web?
I would like to perform an audit of weak passwords, which is well documented for sql users. Using the same methodology, I should be able to audit weak passwords for contained users. To accomplish this, I must be able to find the location of the password hashes for the contained users.
I have looked at sys.syslogins and sys.sql_logins, which both have the password hash for server level users, but not contained users. I was able to find sys.sysusers, which does contain contained users, but no password hash.
What is the location of the password hashes for contained users?
How to get all logins & users with their password into other server while doing migration?

In SQL Server 2000(Sql Query Analyzer), I had opened a main program file for debugging purpose.
Somehow by mistake its entire contents get replaced/deleted.
I don't have the backup.
I would appreciate anyone who can save me by advising to restore this program.
Where is located the hash password for the contained database users?I have a script that prints all creating statement so that a Dev environment security can be reapply after a prod data refresh but I can't find the table containing the hash password when the user is "with login" for contained database.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIdeally, I'd like to have the reports use windows authentication, ie grab current user/password so long as user does not have to enter it manually. If that is not possible, then how do I make it so user does not have to enter this info manually? My theory is that I have IIS set up incorrectly for doing this, but I'm not familiar enough with either reporting services or IIS to find out.

How to compare password stored in database against passowrd typed by user? Is this a good idea to use CustomValidator control to write some checking procedure?. Regards. Pawel.

I am trying to restore msdb to another server is this possible in order to get the dts packets and the jobs
I have to merge the data from two databases, one is in SQL Server 2005 format, one is in 2000. The merged data will then reside on a SQL Server 2000 platform. Is there an easy way to do this through Management Studio or Enterprise Manager? Or will we have to export the data from the 2005 database to a flat file and import it into a new 2000 database. And then do the merge?
TIA
I need to restore test DB from production backup but once it is restored I would need all the permissions of sql logins and windows AD account intact in test Db as it was before.

Im running SQL 7.0 in production with no SQL service pack applied. I am trying to copy the database over to a test box running SQL 7.0 SP3. Both servers are NT 4.0 with SP6.1a. When I restore the database on the test box, I do not get the Users restored but I do get the Tables and other items. The SQL backup Im restoring from is a complete backup. Could the fact that the server Im restoring on is SQL 7.0 SP3 and it came from a pure SQL 7.0 server?

HI guys,
I just restored a database on a new server with a backup(complete backup stored in backup device) from another database on another server using the "with move" option. In fact here was my process:
Alter database ngauge SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE
restore database ngauge
from disk = 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLBACKUPgauge1.BAK'
with move 'NGAUGE' to 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDatagauge_Data.MDF',
move 'NGAUGE_Log' to 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDatagauge_Log.LDF'
Alter database ngauge SET READ_WRITE
it worked.
But it did not move the 98 or so users/logins...from the source database
what is going on??? what am I doing wrong??!!

Third question:
I'm backing up a database which has some users.
When I try to restore it to another machine which has the same users and already has an old version of the database the database cannot be accessed. I must drop the users from the database by using the stored procedures sp_dropuser <username> and then add it again to the database from the Enterprise Manager.
Why this happens??

any information could be greatly appreciated.

What I want to do is :
- restore a backup of a 3rd party database onto one of our servers
- this has no users that I can use
- there is some ETL processing so we're using Control-M to manage the process
- create a database user and grant it db_reader.
I'd like to do this without granting any users elevated privileges if possible.
What I've done so far is grant the Control-M user (this is a domain user) dbcreator rights and made it owner of our copy of the database that is being refreshed.
The refresh is completing, but Control-M is not able to log onto the database to create the user.
What is the best way to accomplish this task without granting the control-m user sysadmin rights?
Would I be able to do it if I used a SQL Agent job for the restore and user creation?
