Problem With Update When Updating All Rows Of A Table Through Dataset And Saving Back To Database

Feb 24, 2006

Hi,
I have an application where I'm filling a dataset with values from a table. This table has no primary key. Then I iterate through each row of the dataset and I compute the value of one of the columns and then update that value in the dataset row. The problem I'm having is that when the database gets updated by the SqlDataAdapter.Update() method, the same value shows up under that column for all rows. I think my Update Command is not correct since I'm not specifying a where clause and hence it is using just the value lastly computed in the dataset to update the entire database. But I do not know how to specify  a where clause for an update statement when I'm actually updating every row in the dataset. Basically I do not have an update parameter since all rows are meant to be updated. Any suggestions?
SqlCommand snUpdate = conn.CreateCommand();
snUpdate.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
snUpdate.CommandText = "Update TestTable set shipdate = @shipdate";
snUpdate.Parameters.Add("@shipdate", SqlDbType.Char, 10, "shipdate");
string jdate ="";
for (int i = 0; i < ds.Tables[0].Rows.Count - 1; i++)
{
jdate = ds.Tables[0].Rows[i]["shipdate"].ToString();
ds.Tables[0].Rows[i]["shipdate"] = convertToNormalDate(jdate);
}
da.Update(ds, "Table1");
conn.Close();

-Thanks

Saving The Output From A Stored Procedure

May 7, 2008

Hi,

I've a large number of stored procedures that output result sets, as part of a test script it would be useful for me to be able to save the results from these stored procedures into temporary tables, without having to pre-create these tables, i.e. use the equivalent of a select * into statement.

Is this possible ?

Problem With Saving A Stored Procedure

Jun 13, 2007

I have had the same problem. In the past I had the sql commands in the code. Last project was with SQL2000 and I decided to add store procedures part as a learning tool and part to better control the code. With the current project I am using SQL2005 and have a ummm fun time with the learning curve.

Below is my stored procedure.

USE [AdventureWorks]

GO

SET ANSI_NULLS ON

GO

SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON

GO

ALTER Procedure [dbo].[WDR_CountryAdd]

(

@CountryName nvarchar(50),

@CountryID int OUTPUT

)

AS

INSERT INTO Country

(

CountryName

)

VALUES

(

@CountryName

)

SELECT

@CountryID = @@Identity

When I hit the execute button, I get the following error.

Msg 208, Level 16, State 6, Procedure WDR_CountryAdd, Line 24

Invalid object name 'WDR_CountryAdd'.

I I know that it does not exist as that is what I am trying to do, create it. I have checked to make sure that I am on the currect database. So how do I associate this procedure with the data base? Do I need to write a SQL query to create the procedure? Maybe that is the answer and then just modify it.

Creating And Saving A Stored Procedure In SQL Server 2005. Help !!!!!!!

Mar 4, 2007

I have in the past created stored procedures using SQL Server 2000. It was easy to do. Now I am using SQL Server 2005 and the whole process is different and confusing to me. I performed the following steps to create a stored  procedure:
1.) In SQL Server management studio, I wen to the folder named "Stored Procedures"2.) I right clicked on this folder and selected "New Stored Procedure..."3.) A generic sql server stored procedure is created for me.4.) I modify the stored procedure and now want to save it?
Now where do I go from here? How should I properly save this new stored procedure and where should I save it?I noticed that a generic name is assigned such as SQLQuery13.sql, but I want to name it something else.
I actually saved the new stored procedure but I can't see it listed under the "Stored Procedures" folder. I even tried doing a refresh.

How Do You Get A Result Set Back From A Stored Procedure

Oct 9, 2006

I am trying to get data back from stored procedure output arguments. I am in a Visual C++ enviroment calling the stored procedure via the ODBC function SQLExecDirect. When the stored procedure has only a single output argument, everything works fine. When there are multiple output arguments, I get an error "Invalid Cursor State' from the SQLFetch. This is telling me there is no result set.
Below is a pseudo code fragment which shows what I am doing.
I want to use SQLGetData to convert the data into C variables. I do not want to use SQLBindParameter or Parameter Markers.
Sql = "DECLARE @outarg1 int
DECLARE @outarg2 datetime
{CALL ProcName('Inarg1','Inarg2',.......@outarg1 OUTPUT,@outarg2 OUTPUT ) }
SELECT @outarg1,@outarg2 " ;
rc = SQLExecDirect(hstmt,Sql,strlen(Sql) )
if( rc == SQL_SUCCESS)
{
rc == SQLFetch(hstmt);
if(rc == SQL_ERROR)
{
SqlGetDiagRec(.........);
}
}
.....
When there is one out parameter, everything works OK.

When there are multiple out parameters, I get a SQL error state 24000 which is "Invalid Cursor State". This tells me there is no result set for the Fetch to act on.
The stored procedure is doing a select for each out parameter.
Any Idea why I get an error when using more than one out parameter

Saving A Database Into An Importable File Format

Nov 28, 2006

I am brand new to SQL. Have limited coding experience w/ Visual Basic and database ops w/ Access.

I have come into possession of a SQL 2005 database. The problem is that the designer tried to re-invent the wheel and code a very very poor LMS back end for tracking and reporting. I would like, if possible, to save the database and as far as I am aware - should be able to import into Access and generate statistics and reports to my hearts content.

I have tried w/out success to save the database going through SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Any help or information that could be provided would be appreciated. Any additional information that I can provide, please let me know.

Thanks - Will

All I Want To Do Is Feed A Varchar Into A Stored Procedure And Get An Id Back... What Am I Doing Wrong?

Dec 28, 2006

So I have been building stored procedures and things were working fine until I hit something that I am sure is incredibly simple to do; however, i have having a hell of a time with it.  Here is the code:#############################################ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.GetUserIdForUser  @username NVARCHARASBEGINDECLARE @postedbyid UNIQUEIDENTIFIERSET @postedbyid = (SELECT UserIdFROM aspnet_UsersWHERE (UserName = @username))END###Which returns this### Running [dbo].[GetUserIdForUser] ( @username = jason ).No rows affected.(0 row(s) returned)@RETURN_VALUE = 0Finished running [dbo].[GetUserIdForUser].############################################# This is part of a much larger stored procedure, but this is the point of failure in the stored procedure I am trying to build.  If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong I would appreciate it.  I have tried a few things that have resulted in different failures.  If I remove any references to variables (delete SET @postedbyid = and replace @username with 'jason') I can get it to return a result.  If I put @username in though it doesn't work.  Here are the examples of those:ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.GetUserIdForUser  @username NVARCHARASBEGINSELECT UserIdFROM aspnet_UsersWHERE (UserName = @username)END###Which returns this###Running [dbo].[GetUserIdForUser] ( @username = jason ).UserId                                 -------------------------------------- No rows affected.(0 row(s) returned)@RETURN_VALUE = 0Finished running [dbo].[GetUserIdForUser].  Here is a sanity check to show that the data is in fact in the database:ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.GetUserIdForUserASBEGINSELECT UserIdFROM aspnet_UsersWHERE (UserName = 'jason')END Running [dbo].[GetUserIdForUser].UserId                                 -------------------------------------- No rows affected.(1 row(s) returned)@RETURN_VALUE = 0Finished running [dbo].[GetUserIdForUser]. Anyone have any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Run A Large SQL Stored Procedure In The Background While ASP.NET Transfers Back To Browser?

May 24, 2007

Apologies if this post doesn't belong here.
We are in the process of moving steps from a large SQL job to a web portal. The intent here is to allow the user to manually trigger the jobs to run. The problem I am having is in determining a way to run these job steps in the background, thus allowing the browser to take control while the step runs. These jobs can take enough time that forcing the browser to wait is not an option.The steps have been consolidated into stored procedures so in order to run a step, one would call the sproc. What I would like to do is run this in a separate thread and let that thread end on its own while the server transfers back to the client. Is something like this possible? My understanding is that the thread would be orphaned once the browser takes control again. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Stored Procedure Can't Access Table On External Database

Mar 6, 2005

Hi

I have created a .net application using visual studio .net and sql server destop edition on my pc. I have exported the database tables and stored procedures and imported them into a Sql Server database on a web hosting service. The web host does not allow me to access this database directly through visual studio .net.

My connection string to the external database works ok and I can access my stored procedures through my web pages. I know they accept parameters and that I can receive Return Values from them. However, whenever I try to access any of the tables on the external database through a stored procedure, I get a sqlException saying that the table cannot be found (Invalid object name 'UserList').

I have created a text type command which selects data from one of the tables and this runs through without any errors. I have also managed to Insert a row onto one of the external tables also by using a text type command. My only problem seems to be with commands using stored procedures.

Just in case this is the problem - the owner of the table/procedures on my desktop is shown as dbo but on the external database the owner of the tables is shown as [domainname].co.uk_dbuser while the stored procedures owner is still dbo.

Example of stored procedure on external database:

/****** Object: Stored Procedure dbo.AddUser Script Date: 01/03/2005 21:10:06 ******/
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.AddUser
(
@Username Varchar(20),
@Password Varchar(20)
)
AS
(
Select User_ID From UserList
Where User_Username = @Username
)
GO

Have tried changing dbo.AddUser to [domain].co.uk_dbuser.Adduser but this would not save because there were too many full-stops!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am completely stuck.

John

Having Difficulty Setting Back Up To Back Up File Wihout Datetime Stamp SQL 2K

Apr 24, 2007

Hello,I'm trying to create a simple back up in the SQL Maintenance Plan that willmake a single back up copy of all database every night at 10 pm. I'd likethe previous nights file to be overwritten, so there will be only a singleback up file for each database (tape back up runs every night, so each daysback up will be saved on tape).Every night the maintenance plan makes a back up of all the databases to anew file with a datetime stamp, meaning the previous nights file stillexists. Even when I check "Remove files older than 22 hours" the previousnights file still exists. Is there any way to create a back up file withoutthe date time stamp so it overwrites the previous nights file?Thanks!Rick

I am having a bit of a mare on the database backup front - i.e. monster
DB, not a great deal of space to back it up into.

As I do the backup, the file on the disk seems to stay at 2KB

How does the file get written? Is there a temp somewhere first?

Cheers in advance - Dave

SSIS Hard Time Getting Back XML Return Data From Stored Procedure Call Executed By Execute SQL Task

Aug 9, 2006

I'm having a hard time to getting back an xml data back from a stored procedure executed by an Execute SQL task.

I'm passing in an XML data as a parameter and getting back resulting XML data as a parameter. The Execute SQL task is using ADO connection to do this job. The two parameters(in/out) are type of "string" and mapped as string.

When I execute the task, I get the following error message.

[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "dbo.PromissorPLEDataUpload" failed with the following error: "The incoming tabular data stream (TDS) remote procedure call (RPC) protocol stream is incorrect. Parameter 2 ("@LogXML"): Data type 0xE7 has an invalid data length or metadata length.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

I also tried mapping the parameter as XML type, but that didn't work either.

If anyone knows what's going on or how to fix this problem please let me know. All I want to do is save returning XML data in the parameter to a local package variable.

Thanks

Stored Procedure In Database X, Executes Stored Procedure In Database Y, Wrapped In Transaction?

Jul 20, 2005

Is it possible to execute a stored procedure in one database, which thenitself executes a stored procedure from another database? We have decide tosplit our data into a tree structure (DB1) and data blobs (DB2) (we areusing MSDE and we have a 2gb limit with each DB so we've done it this wayfor that reason). I would like to, say, execute a stored procedure in DB1,passing in the data blob and other details, DB1 will create a tree node inDB1 and then add the blob record to DB2. DB1 will wrap in a transaction ofcourse, as will DB2 when it adds the blob. Is this possible?

Mirroring :: Principal Database Get Role Back After Being Back On Line

May 14, 2015

New to Database Mirroring and I have a question about the Principal database server. I have a Database Mirroring setup configured for High-safety with automatic fail over mode using a witness.

When a fail over occurs because of a lost of communication between the principal and mirror, the mirror server takes on the roll of Principal. When communication is returned to the Principal server, at some point does the database that was the previous Principal database automatically go back to being the Principal server?
