Scheduled SQL Server Tasks (6.5)

Sep 18, 2000

Hello:

1) Is there a way to call a second task 'upon completion' of the first one. Or would I need to place the code of the second task in one task?
(This is v6.5) I guess the main purpose is to avoid conflict & see if one fails, the other may succeed, etc. I generally like to keep diff tasks separate, but one is dependent upon the completion of the other.

2) I want to restore a db, upon completion of the backup of another db. They are on separate servers, but i know i can use remote sp's.

Any advice, help, code, scripts, etc, would be appreciated. Thank you.

Scheduled Tasks

Sep 15, 1999

If I have 2 scheduled tasks set for the same time (perhaps accidentally), will the
SQL Executive start 1 and queue the other one until the first is complete and
then run the 2nd task? Or will they both be started simultaneously?

Thanks!

Scheduled Tasks In 6.5

Feb 12, 1999

I have been running the following production job successfully for a long time.
It now fails, and the Task History Last Error Message displays 'No Message'.
The log file ( C:MSSQLLOGMaint_TombV50.txt) shows it ran successfully,
with a Return Code 0.

SQLMAINT.EXE -D TombV50 -RebldIdx 10
-CkDB -CkAl -CkTxtAl -CkCat
-UpdSts -Rpt C:MSSQLLOGMaint_TombV50.txt

It looks like SQL Executive burps for some reason.

Any ideas, comments, suggestions?

Thanks,
sb

Scripting Up Scheduled Tasks

Mar 23, 2001

Apologies if this has already been covered, but I can't find any information.

What is the easiest way to move a batch of scheduled tasks from one server/network to another? Can you script them up somehow and then reapply the script to the new location?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

SQL Executive And Scheduled Tasks

Jan 19, 1999

I'm running SQL Server 6.5 and have schedules a number of tasks to run overnight. This has generally been successful; even when the tasks have failed, it's been because of a lack of data in a feeder database system.

My problem is that when I try to run the tasks manually, I get a message saying that they can't be run because SQL Executive is not running on the server. Now, this ain't true. The little gizmos show green in the server manager, and if I right click on SQL Executive, 'Start' is disabled and 'Stop' is enabled.

Am I missing something here? Does anyone have any clues or suggestions?

Thanks.

Scheduled Tasks Not Running?????

Nov 2, 1998

Hey how are you.

I'm going crazy with EM's Sheduled Tasks.
I've setup couple of backups and weekly maintenance plans from EM.
After couple of days I viewed sheduled tasks from EM toolbar
and found that all the tasks have not executed as I have scheduled.
the task history does not show any history at all.
Clicking refresh does not do any good either.
However if i right click on the database and choose restore i see all the backups
that i have scheduled.
Is this a bug?

Can someone tell me what's wrong???

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Scheduled Tasks Don't Complete

Nov 7, 2000

We are running SQL 6.5 sp5a. There have been a number of instances recently where some scheduled tasks don't complete. I can't even cancel them. The only way to stop them is to stop and start the Executive service.

Anyone come across this before and know what the problem is?

All the maintanance jobs scheduled for weekend are still running after 66 hours.

1. transaction log backup
2. integrity check

I stopped the jobs from scheduled task lists, I can still see them running through current activity window.

Is it ok to kill them? Or how I can stop them?

Thanks,

MSDE Scheduled Tasks

Oct 14, 2005

Is anyone aware of a way of adding scheduled tasks to MSDE?

Obviously in SQL Server you'd use the Enterprise Manager to do that, but I don't believe it is possible to get Enterprise Manager seperately from SQL Server.

Any ideas on that would be great

Using SSIS Instead Of Scheduled Tasks?

Jan 22, 2008

What are peoples opinions on using SSIS as a "central repository" and replacement for all scheduled tasks. Example, we have a bunch of servers which we have installed services which we have written. Currently we have scheduled tasks on each machine to stop and start the services. One of my collegues is using SSIS to run a system which runs tasks on multiple machines by remotely running programs on other machines via scheduled tasks and then collects the data and puts it into a database.

He's now pitching the idea that we remove the scheduled tasks on each machine and start and stop our services via SSIS so that it's centralized. In addition, we can also check for holidays in our database before starting services. Since it doesn't seem like SSIS was meant for this type of use, I'm weary of using the tool to do something it wasn't intended for.

Any opinions? I'm also worried that the learnnig curve for everyone is going to be too high.

Changing Sa Password Causes Scheduled Tasks To Fail.

Feb 8, 2000

I recently changed the SA password on my SQL Server 6.5 installation and discovered that this had caused the Scheduled CmdExec Tasks (defined in SQL Executive) to fail with:

"Process Exit Code 1. Microsoft (R) SQLMaint Utility, Version 6.50.240 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation, 1995 - 1996 [Microsoft SQL-DMO] Error 4002: [SQL Server] Login failed"

Changing the password back to the original resolves the problem, but is a less than satisfactory solution.

Any advice on how I can change the SA password and allow CmdExec tasks to continue running would be gratefully appreciated.

Scheduled Tasks Failing Because Of Email Notification

Jun 2, 1999

Good morning,

I have a strange problem with a scheduled task failing with the following:

"Unable to send completion notification email to operator with email name '' for task 2780, 'Scheduled Update'"

This job is the same across several servers and the job runs on the other servers. This is a bit frustrating... I cannot seem to find the difference that is causing the problem.

The funny thing is that I am not using SQLMail or anything to notify anyone regardless if the job succeeds or fails.

Any pointers?

Thanks much,

Don

What Data Mining Tasks Can Be Automated And Scheduled Via Integration Services Packages?

Jun 14, 2006

Hi, all here,

Would please any expert here give me any guidance about what Data Mining tasks can be automated and scheduled via Integration Services Packages? Also, If we automated the tasks, can we also automatically save the results of the tasks somewhere? Like if we automate assessing the accuracy of a mining model, then we wanna know the mining model accuracy later, therefore, we need to save all these results from the automated actions. Is it possible to realize this?

Thanks a lot in advance for any guidance and help for this.

With best regards,

Run Tasks Against Each Sql Server

Jun 18, 2008

Hi,

I would like to run several checklists against each sql server 2005 instance.

I can get a list of the sql server 2005 machines (Which are on the network) from a sql server table.

There is a another table which holds the list of the checks that need to be carried out against each sql server 2005 machine called tblCheckList.

The list of tasks in the table is briefly as follows:

1) get the path where the .mdf file is placed.
2) get the path where the .ldf file is placed
3) get the path where .BAK or .TRN are placed
4) get the path where the sql 2005 is installed
5) get the servicepack version
6) get the authentication
7) remove sample databases i.e. northwind or pubs, etc...
8) get the recovery model on UserDB
9) get the size of each database

...
...
...

The list goes on

Thanks

Scheduling Tasks In SQL Server 2000

Nov 9, 2006

Hi all

I want to schedule a task that checks if a file(s) exists on d:Acc and then run the sql script shown below i.e. with the file(s) to load the content of the file(s) every day new files will be loaded. after the file(s) are loaded the file(s) are deleted.

I currently can achieve the above using Java and sql server and running the program as a scheduled task... (only reason for change would be that i wouldnt require java, JDBC etc to run the software it would be easy manage, migrate etc)

I wanted to find out if it can be done with sql server directly? (i.e. check if file exist and ased on that carryout the task or other wise just ignore) What do i need to look for? does sql server have a procedural language in it to be used for such thing? does sql server have an inbuilt task scheduler?

I am currently using the following script in a java program please note that i have used fixed values in this script for readabliity (of what i am doing)..

@bulk_cmd varchar(1000)
SET @bulk_cmd = 'BULK INSERT AccInv..VW_AccInvoice
FROM ''d:Invbatch2001.txt''
WITH (FIELDTERMINATOR = '','', ROWTERMINATOR = '''+CHAR(10)+''')'
EXEC(@bulk_cmd)

64 Bit Server Pre-Compiled Script Tasks.

May 19, 2008

Hello Forum

I have an issue that hopefully someone can help me with. We have SQL server running in a 64 bit environment. We are running SQL Server 2005 SP2. The problem I am experiencing is that my SSIS script components produce the following error when the SSIS package is executed from the server.

Code: 0x00000003 Source: Set Perspective Connection Description: Precompiled script failed to load. The computer that is running the Script Task does not have a compiler capable of recompiling the script. To recompile the script, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, KB931846 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=81885).

I have reviewed this article and everything points to SP2 as being the fix. Being that I am running SP2 there is something else going on. I was curious to see if anyone else has run into this issue with SP2.

Any input you have is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Problem With SQL Server Maintenance Cleanup Tasks

Nov 2, 2007

I've had problems trying to get a new maintenance plan on a new server to work.

I'm running a plan that does an integrity check, reindex, shrink, backup, the a maint cleanup to get rid of backups older than 2 weeks.

I'm getting failures that say:

Error Number
-1073548784

Error Message:
Executing the query "EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'',N'BAK',N'2007-10-18T18:43:41',1
" failed with the following error: "Error executing extended stored procedure: Invalid Parameter". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

Yes, this is a post SP2 server.
Current version, with the patches I've applied looking to fix this is: 9.0.3054

Additionally, if you go in to edit a maintenance cleanup task, you cannot click on OK, or the T-SQL. Changing values within it does not help.

Any clues?

Can't Execute Tasks After Moving .dtsx To New Server

Jan 10, 2007

Hello.

I have two servers, A for dev and B for production.

On server A I developed a project containing a SSIS package using SQL Server business intelligence development studio. The package runs fine from the BIDS and also when I save it to SQLServer itself and run it as a scheduled job using the SQLServer Agent.

All ready to roll out to Server B I thought, so I then saved the .dtsx file to a shared network drive.

On Server B, I created a empty project with the same name as it had on Server A. I then imported the .dtsx file into the project using project > add existing item.

The package appeared to import ok but I now cannot execute any of the data flow tasks in isolation. If I right click on them, there is no option to 'execute task' as there should be, it is not greyed out, it's not there at all.

Also, if I attempt to debug the whole package I get a message saying 'This document is opened by another project'.

Can anyone help with this as my deployment to live isn't going very well to say the least!

Both server A + B are 32-bit 2005 std edition SP1 on W2003 Server std edition SP1.

Thanks.

Multiple FTP Tasks That Connect To Same Server At Same Time Error

Apr 2, 2007

I have this job that download 4 files once a month from the same server. The files are sizable and I need to download them in less than 5 hours total. In 2000 I use an active x script to generate the ftp script then execute the script. all four files download at the same time in 4 different tasks with no issues.

I am rewrote the process in 2005 so that it uses the IS FTP function but when all 4 ftp tasks kick off they all fail... instantly. the initially shared the same FTP connection manager so I created different ones for each and still the same result

the error is one that relates to changing directories.... Now if I just run one of the tasks it runs fine it is just when more than one try to run at once. I ended up putting in 10 second delays between each ftp task kicking off and it works just fine...

Does this sound like a bug??

Also... I am on SQL 2005 Enterprise SP1 on Windows 2003 enterprise SP1.

Who Can Run The Server Scheduled Agent Job?

I tried to ask the NT admin to login the SQL server and setup a scheduled job to "Shrink the db" for testing purpose.

I tried my ID even I'm not the NT admin, but setup as SQL server as sysadmin, setupadmin, processadmin.

Then the job start and got the error.

Scheduled Job Hangs The Server

Nov 23, 2005

I wonder if anyone can help.I have a scheduled job running overnight to delete old records for aparticular Db table. The table contains more than half million records and the scriptsimply uses the date field to delete any of the records which have adate older than 7 days. My guess is that there will be some 100,000records which need to be deleted. The job takes ages to run and whilst it is running sql server iscompletely locked and the associated website is effectively offlinebecause of it.I think I know where the problem lies but I don't know why.Whoever created the Db table created a varchar 255 field as theprimary key. The field is then filled with a string of 40 charactersgenerated within the webserver script to have a 'unique' string. Those are the facts. The following is my interpretation.I think the server is unable to cope with not only a character fieldas primary key but also one with so many characters in it. In such alarger table presumably in order to delete the old records it must dosome sort of ordered sort on the Primary Key and it is this that iscausing the problem.I would like to introduce a new field called 'id' make it autonumberedand primary and make the errant field non-primary.So my question is this:Is my analysis correct but more importantly, why? Can anyone give meclear reasoning for it.Also is the solution sound?Table looks like this:clientID intrefID varchar 255 Primary KeyfieldA varchar 512creationDate datetimefieldB varchar 255field C varchar 32Job script:delete from myTable where creationDate < [7daysAgo]Thanks in anticipationBill

i have a package scheduled in sql server.....
if i change something in the package and save the change...
will the scheduled job then reflect that change? or does the scheduled job have to be deleted and the package re-scheduled in order for the change to take affect?
(for example....i have a scheduled package which pulls some data from an oracle server and populates a sql server tabel. well....the oracle server has changed. so if i open my package and change the oracle server connection and save it, will the scheduled job have this change?)
