I saw a presentation last week where the speaker created some sorta sql server "watch window" (in Sql Server Management Studio I think) where he could watch all the commands being executed on his sql server database in real-time. For example he could navigate to web pages (that hit the database) and as he pressed buttons you could see the sql commands execute in this "watch window." If other users hit the database at the same time you could see those sql queries execute as well. I didn't think at the time to ask how he did it - does anyone know how to set this up? I have a problem with my sql server right now and it would be useful to see which sql queries (etc) are being executed when. Thanks in advance,J. Shane Kunklejkunkle@vt.edu

Just wonder whether is there any indicator or system parameters that can indicate whether stored procedure A is executed inside query analyzer or executed inside application itself so that if execution is done inside query analyzer then i can block it from being executed/retrieve sensitive data from it?
What i'm want to do is to block someone executing stored procedure using query analyzer and retrieve its sensitive results.
Stored procedure A has been granted execution for public user but inside application, it will prompt access denied message if particular user has no rights to use system although knew public user name and password. Because there is second layer of user validation inside system application.
However inside query analyzer, there is no way control execution of stored procedure A it as user knew the public user name and password.
Looking forward for replies from expert here. Thanks in advance.
Note: Hope my explaination here clearly describe my current problems.

This is a request for help fixing a SQL Server 2000/ADO problem on WindowsXP. I would appreciate any useful assistance.PROBLEM: SQL Server access on my machine fails as follows:1. However, I suspect insteadthat a Windows XP hotfix has CLOBBERED ADO.BTW, this is a BIG issue for me. My development machine is hosed, and untilI get this fixed, I AM COMPLETELY DOWN.

I'm currently using Windows Task Scheduler to run a few jobs. We would like to start using the SQL Server Agent to handle this. The problem I am having is in specifing the 'working directory' of the program. The program is generating some files in a temp directory withing the root of the application. For some reason when I schedule in SQL it is generating these files in the WinSys32 directory.
I am using the CmdExec type in my job step.
I am sure I may have left out some info. please let me know if you need anything else.
thanks.

MS Win XP Pro 2002 SP2
MS SQL Server 2005
MS Visual Studio 2005
----------------------
Can anyone help me (even by pointing me to a documentation) in order to schedule Packages (from file system source) in SQL Server 2005.
I've configured providers logging, but still the error file doesn't give me any explanation why the error happens:
"#Fields: event,computer,operator,source,sourceid,executionid,starttime,endtime,datacode,databytes,message
OnPreValidate,PC1234,NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM,D_AGR,{8A4FA774-F5F0-40DE-AB16-A93F27950E09},{8A918844-8E43-403D-A606-C8CB4B7D8238},31/08/2006 16:42:55,31/08/2006 16:42:55,0,0x,(null)"
I've also done the same on the Step properties under 'Logging'
In Management Studio I've added my login name and I'm the only user using the machine and I manage both Visual Studio and Management Studio
The error coming up on the job history is as follow: "Executed as user: PC1234SYSTEM. The package execution failed. The step failed." "The job failed. The Job was invoked by User UK1USER123. The last step to run was step 1 (step1)."
By the way the package (.dtsx) runs fine in BI Visual Studio)
Thank you very much.

In my report I have two date parameters, both are of type DateTime.
The problem is that when the report is called for the first time the report parameter value is not shown in the expected format (de-DE, 01.01.2007) but in en-US 01/01/2007
Only when I change a Date using the calendar popup and click on the "show report" button, the right format will be taken over.
Language properties of the report are"=User!Language"
IE language is de-DE.
Report Server is a MS Windows Server 2003 R2 Standart Edition SP2
with MS SQL SERVER 2005 SP2
P.S.
on a server with MS SQL SERVER 2005 SP1, this report works fine.
may be this bug is a new feature of SP2?

I'm having a hard time to getting back an xml data back from a stored procedure executed by an Execute SQL task.
I'm passing in an XML data as a parameter and getting back resulting XML data as a parameter. The Execute SQL task is using ADO connection to do this job. The two parameters(in/out) are type of "string" and mapped as string.
When I execute the task, I get the following error message.
[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "dbo.PromissorPLEDataUpload" failed with the following error: "The incoming tabular data stream (TDS) remote procedure call (RPC) protocol stream is incorrect. Parameter 2 ("@LogXML"): Data type 0xE7 has an invalid data length or metadata length.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
I also tried mapping the parameter as XML type, but that didn't work either.
If anyone knows what's going on or how to fix this problem please let me know. All I want to do is save returning XML data in the parameter to a local package variable.
Thanks

I have also posted this in microsoft.public.sqlserver.programming.
I have a query which, depending on where I run it from, will either take 10 milliseconds or 10 seconds.
The query works perfectly when run in SQL Server Management Studio... in my database of around 70,000 items it returns the results in around 10ms. It uses all my indexes and indexed views correctly.
However when I run the identical query from my ASP.NET application, it takes around 10 seconds... 1000 times longer.
Looking at it in Sql Server Profiler I can't see any difference in the query, except from ASP.NET it needs 62531 reads and from SSMS it needs only 318 reads. If I copy the slow running ASP.NET query from the profiler into SSMS, then it runs quick again. The results returned are the same.
I have provided more details of the query below, but I guess my real question is: What is the best way to debug this? I'm not an expert with SQL Server, so any pointers on where I should start looking to find the difference in how the query is being executed would be a great help.
The query is of the form:
WITH RowPost AS
(
SELECT
ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY DateCreated DESC) AS Row,
ItemId,
Title,
....
FROM
Items_View WITH(NOEXPAND)
WHERE ItemX >= @minX AND ItemX <= @maxX AND ItemY >= @minY AND ItemY <= @maxY
)
SELECT
*,
(SELECT Count(*) FROM RowPost) AS [Count]
FROM RowPost
WHERE Row >= @minRow AND Row < @maxRow
Where Items_View is an indexed view, and WITH(NOEXPAND) is being used to force it to use the indexed view (this is optimal). The line beginning "SELECT Count(*)" is to get the total number of results (without having to run the inner query a second time).
This is running against SQL Server Developer Edition.

Hi ,
is it possible extract file name from script executed in query
analyser ?
Example steps
1. open QA
2. open c:mySuperScript.sql
code in c:mySuperScript.sql
use master
select @filename as [file executed]
select count(*) as xfrom syslogins
3. run
-- result
file executed
------------
c:mySuperScript.sql
x
--
112
Why we need it.
Each database update created using sql compare tool from red-gate
Script saved in Vss
When script executed in production using QA we save output as proof of deployment
currently we add to each script
select
'script= put you file name'+ char(13)+
'server = ' + cast(@@servername as char(20))+ char(13)+
'dbname= ' + cast(DB_NAME()as char(20)) + char(13) +
'execution date= '+ cast(getdate()as char(24))+ char(13)+
'executed by = '+ system_user
We want wrap everything in procedure that will
extract executed file name and other values
this procedure should be first line of code in each script
Thanks

Hey,
In a ASP application, which used Access and is now being migrated to SQL 2005, I have a medium-sized query with many inner joins. I optimized the tables, with indexes, etc, and if I run the query on the SSMS it returns me like 55 lines in less then a second. On the other hand, when the ASP page passes the query to the SQL 2005, it takes 10 sec. to get the data. Using the Profiler I found that the sp_fetch is being executed a lot of times. It looks like the query is decomposed in smaller pieces and the rows as selected one by one. I'm using OleDb.
How to make the ADO (the culprit in my opinion) to execute that query at once?
Thank you.

Hi all,
I am trying to create scheduled job for DTS. I have created new DTS in SQL 2005 but not able to create job out of it.
I tried creating Credential and then to create proxy with this:
Use master
CREATE CREDENTIAL [MyCredential] WITH IDENTITY = 'yourdomainmyWindowAccount', secret = 'WindowLoginPassword'
Use msdb
Sp_add_proxy @proxy_name='MyProxy', @credential_name='MyCredential'
Sp_grant_login_to_proxy @login_name=' devlogin', @proxy_name='MyProxy'
Sp_grant_proxy_to_subsystem @proxy_name='MyProxy', @subsystem_name='SSIS'
but could not get the job to schedule it. when i try to search for the DTS package(TestRev) it could not find it:
Is there a way that i can just call TSQL statement to run that dam DTS because it is too confusing to create job for DTS.
Thanks

I am using SQL Server and ASP.NET. I am executing a couple of stored procedures and displaying the results in a datagrid. Since these Stored procedures takes around 2-4 minutes each, I want to display a status bar on the web by displaying the approximate time the user needs to wait before seeing the results.
My question is: Is there a way to find out the approximate EXECUTION TIME of the stored procedure before hand. Also, if that is possible, how do i access the same from the ASP.NET code..
Thanks

Hi,I have an orders database and I need to be able to write a querythat groups sales by:1. Date2. Time of day (both am and pm)I currently have a date/time field named "Submitted" that storesjust the date.However, how do I store the time?I know I can store the date/time in the "Submitted" field Icreated. However, because of the time being stored in that field, Ican't execute an easy query such as:select * from database where submitted = '2/10/05'(reason being, the time portion makes each "Submitted" fieldrecord unique, so just the date won't be recognized)I realize there probably is a much better way to do this in theSQL query language that I am not aware of.Two questions:1. Based on what I'm trying to do -- query based on date and groupby number of sales for each hour of the day (am and pm) -- what is thebest approach to store the time?2. What does the query look like that querys by date and groupsorders by time of day (am and pm)?Thanks for your help.J
