Script Component In Loop Tries To Evaluate Connection
May 12, 2006
I have a script component which loads a file which is in a custom format. The script component is inside a For Each Loop Container and it uses a flat file connection manager. The loop sets the connection string for the connection manager.
The problem I'm having is that the connection string needs to be set to something every time that I start the package but I don't know ahead of time what file there will be, so I get a System.IO.FileNotFoundException error on the script component. If I manually set the variable for the connection string and point it to a file that exists, then the package runs fine but at the end of the package the connection string is set to the last file loaded and this file will no longer exist the next time the package runs.
I hope this makes sense...

Is there a way to evaluate an expression (like the derived column component) in a custom component? If so where should I look first? Is there an example?
An extremely simple sample is to put in an expression and evaluate one column and then add that to another column to create a new column. i.e. newcolumn = column1 + column2.
I realize that the derived column allows me to do this but I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to do this in a custom component without having to build my own expression evaluator.
Thanks!

Hi All,
I want to run a loop for all the input columns in the script component. My requirement is, I have nearly 50 columns in the input columns list. For each row and for each column I need to do some operation. How Can I run a loop for each column. Please note in the script component I need to get the column names in the middle for some operations. Please see below.
Process Each Input Row
For each column in Input column list
....
....
If column.Name Starts with "Test" then set NULL to the column value
....
....
End Loop
End Loop for each input row
Can anybody tell me how can I do that.

Hi,
I have a package which reads an Access file from a folder. My connection manager to this file is .NET providers for OledbMicrosoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider.
Package works from my computer. But when I execute it on the server as a SQL Agent job, I get
The component metadata for "component "DataReader Source" (1) could not be upgraded to the newer version of the component. The PerformUpgrade method failed.
I copied the mdb file to a folder on the server which my packages have no problem reading data from.
My packages run under the same domain account as defined in proxies.
Appreciate a help.

Hi,
I have no "Foreach File Enumerator" oprtion in the Enumerator Property of the Foreach Loop Component.
I have this enumerator in the c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90DTSForEachEnumerators folder.
Also I check it in the GAC - it does not here. I try to execute gacutil.exe -iF ForEachFileEnumerator.dll, but it is failed with "Failure adding assembly to the cache: The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest." Seems it is not managed enumerator.
Please help me.
Also information on how to regeister unmanaged enumerators are welcome!

Hi,
I'm on writing a custom data flow component (transformation). For this I need access to an external datasource. As best practice, it seems that you should use a connectionmanager in the package.
But I don't really know how to access them.
I've overwritten the AquireConnections() to lookup in the RuntimeConnectionCollection for the connection managers. But It seems it doesnt get called. If I call it my own, for example in validate (just for debugging purposes) the collection is empty, although there are two connectionmanagers in the package.
What am I doing wrong or has someone a code snippet for me.
Thanks T.

Hi - I am attempting to run an SSIS package through a SQL Agent job step. The package is fairly basic - I run some Execute SQL tasks, build an ADO recordset, enter into a For-Each loop, and perform some table updates based on the ADO recordset. So far so good. Approximately 1/3 of the records in my For-Each loop are processed, then I get a "Failed to acquire connection error". All I am doing for each iteration of the For-Each loop is updating one record in a table based upon the current value that is being processed from the ADO recordset. I am running the job on a 64-bit box, version 9.00.3050.00. I have also run this on two other 64-bit boxes (versions 9.00.1399.06 and 9.00.1406.00) and had the same issue. The owner of the Agent job is a sysadmin on the box. I don't understand why some items would be processed, then the connection drops mid-way through processing. What's even odder is the connection is dropped at the same point every time I run. The connection that I have defined in my package (I only have one connection defined in my package) is Provider type "Native OLEDBSQL Native Client", and I am using Windows authentication. The version of Visual Studio that I have developed this package in is 8.0.50727.42. Please help.

Hello,
Greetings, and Happy Friday. I want to check myself in regards to the proper use of connections in a data flow script component being used as a transformation. I want to ensure that the solution is ideal from a performance standpoint, but more importantly that there won't be any resource leaks from connections that are not being closed or objects that are not being disposed properly.
This transformation script component is writing to a table based on the rows that pass through Input0_ProcessInputRow(). What I'm doing so far is, in the script component script, I've declared a class-level variable of type System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection. In the PreExecute() event handler I am initializing this connection with the following code (which comes after the call to MyBase.PreExecute()):
Dim connMgr As IDTSConnectionManager90 connMgr = Me.Connections.JobDB adoConn = CType(connMgr.AcquireConnection(Nothing), SqlClient.SqlConnection) If adoConn.State <> ConnectionState.Open Then adoConn.Open() End If connMgr = Nothing
The adoConn variable referred to there is the class-level variable. So, my first questions:
Is this the best way to initialize the connection? And is that code checking adoConn.State necessary? Can I pretty much assume that the connection manager is going to give me an open connection?
Then in the PostExecute() event handler I have this code (again, after the MyBase call):
If Not (adoConn Is Nothing) Then
If adoConn.State = ConnectionState.Open Then
adoConn.Close()
End If
adoConn.Dispose()
adoConn = Nothing
End If
Next questions:
Is this adoConn variable actually holding a reference to an object whose primary owner is in the connection manager? Is it necessary to close my SqlConnection this way, or is that going to actually close the connection manager's connection?
I'm also wondering whether I need to have this same code in the script component's Finalize() handler also...if there's an error I don't want the resource to leak. Or will PostExecute() fire even if there's an error in Input0_ProcessInputRow()?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Hello,
Using the following documentation as a guide:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/zh-cn/library/aa337080.aspx
I instantiated a new script component into an existing Data Flow in my SSIS project.
In the Script Transformation Editor, under the Connection Managers section, I associated the name dbConnManager to an already existing Connection Manager in the project.
My Connection Manager is of the type oOLEDB.
I then opened up the script designer and added the following lines of code where it said "Add your code here"
Dim myConnManager As IDTSConnectionManager90 = _
Me.Connections.ECFconnection
Dim dbConn As OleDb.OleDbConnection = _
CType(myConnManager.AcquireConnection(Nothing), OleDb.OleDbConnection)
When I test run the project I get the following error and the new script component is red:
Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to class type 'System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection'. Instances of types that represent COM components cannot be cast to types that do not represent COM components; however they can be cast to interfaces as long as the underlying COM component supports QueryInterface calls for the IID of the interface.
I know the database connection works since I am using it in a component that executes before this new script component.
I am stuck...Any suggestions?

I have a list of servers on a table, I take this list and pass to a for each loop container and that will grab some system information from each server that we give for our internal auditors.
The issue that I'm currently having with this package is that some times, 1 or 2 servers from the list are down and/or extremelly busy and it times out, either case causes the whole package to fail.
What I'm trying to do is, test the connection to the server prior passing the server name to the For Each Loop Container and log that information somewhere (Maybe a boolean field in a table), so then I check after the package finish and validate that the server was actually up or down.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,

Hello-
I'm trying to read a table that has database connection information for other DBs and use this within an "Execute SL Task" task. I have seen a number of posts that talk about this possibility, but I have not been able to get it to work yet.
When I've tried to set the connection to a variable (@[User::DB_ConnectionStr]) in the Expressions area of the SQL Task, the Connection type defaults to OLE DB and I can't seem to force it back to ADO or ADO.net.
I've tried doing this with the variable being set to both a connection object and a String with the connection string, but neither seems to work.
Any suggestions? Should this be a string value of the connection string? Am I missing something when trying to set the connection type?
Thanks much!

Hi there,
I am writing a Custom Destination component with a custom UI. The UI contains a combo box which contains the connection names of type €śFLATFILE€?. I also have provided a button which would create a new connection of type €śFLATFILE€? by making a call to CreateConnection method of IDtsConnectionService.
The combo box gets properly updated showing the connections of type €śFLATFILE€? but on clicking on the new Connection button the application hangs up.
Am I missing something or is there some other way to do it?
The function are the events handlers which are called by the UI.
void form_GetConnections(object sender, AvailableColumnsArgs args)
{
Debug.Assert(this.ServiceProvider != null, "Service Provider not valid.");
this.ClearErrors();
try
{
IDtsConnectionService connectionService = (IDtsConnectionService)this.ServiceProvider.GetService(typeof(IDtsConnectionService));
if (connectionService != null)
{
ArrayList temp_Connections =
connectionService.GetConnectionsOfType("FLATFILE");
args.AvailableColumns = new AvailableColumnElement[temp_Connections.Count];
for (int i = 0; i < temp_Connections.Count; i++)
{
ConnectionManager runtimeConnection = (ConnectionManager)temp_Connections;
args.AvailableColumns.AvailableColumn = new DataFlowElement(runtimeConnection.Name, runtimeConnection);
}
}
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
this.ReportErrors(ex);
}
}
void form_GetNewConnection(object sender, AvailableColumnsArgs args)
{
Debug.Assert(this.ServiceProvider != null, "Service Provider not valid.");
this.ClearErrors();
try
{
IDtsConnectionService connectionService = (IDtsConnectionService)this.ServiceProvider.GetService(typeof(IDtsConnectionService));
if (connectionService != null)
{
connectionService.CreateConnection("FLATFILE");
ArrayList temp_Connections =
connectionService.GetConnectionsOfType("FLATFILE");
args.AvailableColumns = new AvailableColumnElement[temp_Connections.Count];
for (int i = 0; i < temp_Connections.Count; i++)
{
ConnectionManager runtimeConnection = (ConnectionManager)temp_Connections;
args.AvailableColumns.AvailableColumn = new DataFlowElement(runtimeConnection.Name, runtimeConnection);
}
}
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
this.ReportErrors(ex);
}
}
Has anyone else run into this?
I am running
SQL 2005 9.0.1399 and VS 2005 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.50727.4200) on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
The code sample is an extension to the RemoveDuplicates sample (Dec 2005) which comes along with the SQL Server.
TIA,

Hi All,
I've written a script component that essentially uses a connection manager to connect to a database and executes a stored proc to return a retail price for a product sold in a store. This works fine with small volumes of data. (50 or so executes) When I use larger volumes of data (4500 executes, eventually will be 2.5 million) I get connection pooling errors as follows:-
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached.
This I can fix on the 4500 data volumes by setting the connection pool to 10000.
My question is... is this the correct way to fix the error, or is there an underlying problem that needs to be sorted? My script code is as follows.
Public Overrides Sub SalesData_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As SalesDataBuffer)
Dim InSightConnectionManager As IDTSConnectionManager90 = Me.Connections.InSight
Dim InSightConnection As SqlConnection = CType(InSightConnectionManager.AcquireConnection(Nothing), SqlConnection)
Dim RetailPrice As Decimal
Dim SQLCmd As SqlCommand
SQLCmd = New SqlCommand()
With SQLCmd
.Connection = InSightConnection
.CommandText = "upDWGetRetailAtTimeOfTransaction"
.Parameters.Add("@StoreID", SqlDbType.Int)
.Parameters.Add("@Barcode", SqlDbType.Char = 13)
.Parameters.Add("@TDate", SqlDbType.DateTime)
.Parameters.Add("@RetailPrice", SqlDbType.Decimal).Direction = ParameterDirection.Output
.Parameters("@RetailPRice").Precision = 19
.Parameters("@RetailPRice").Scale = 5
.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
End With
With SQLCmd
.Parameters("@StoreID").Value = Row.StoreCode
.Parameters("@Barcode").Value = Row.ScannedEAN
.Parameters("@TDate").Value = Row.TransactionDate
.ExecuteNonQuery()
RetailPrice = Convert.ToDecimal(.Parameters("@RetailPrice").Value)
End With
Row.RetailPrice = RetailPrice
End Sub
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi all. Sorry about bothering you again but I have no choice, I'm afraid. This time I have to add a connection manager at runtime. I have a script that examines rows in a huuuuuuuuuuuuge file and it turns out that I will have to redirect different rows into 95 different text files. I would like to avoid the pain of creating the files and connection managers manually. I have a source script component that runs asynchronously (the only way basically it can run as a source) and I wonder whether this time, when I change the connction string on the manager at runtime inside the script, it would run properly. Can anybode tell me, please?

Synopsis:
Attempting to create a data flow task to copy data from AS/400 (DB2) to SQL2005, using an existing System DSN ODBC connection defined on the SQL2005 host.
Problem:
When adding the DataReader Source component to the package, I cannot assign the Connection Manager. Designer issues the error message:
"The runtime connection manager with the ID "" cannot be found. Verify that the connection manager collection has a connection manager with that ID."
Editing the DataReaderSrc component shows only one row under the Connection Managers tab:
Name=IDbConnection
Connection Manager=blank
Description=Managed connection manager
The datareadersrc component editor displays the warning message: "Not all connection managers have been set. Set all connection managers.". Clicking the Refresh button causes the error message to be displayed "The runtime connection manager with the ID "" cannot be found. Verify that the connection manager collection has a connection manager with that ID."
I am prevented from assigning my Connection Manager object the DataReaderSrc.
The package already contains one Connect Manager object:
Provider: .Net Providers/Odbc Data Provider
System DSN
Test Connection operation succeeds
Any help would be appreciated.
Fraser.

The standard flat file connection component does not handle flat files with different column counts on different rows. Since that's the type of file I have to read, I like to create a modified version of the flat file connection manager that can do this. I have found some info in how to create a connection manager. But I can't find anything that tels me how to build one that would be recognized by the flat file source dataflow component.
So how do you build an connection manager that can used by the standard flat file source component? Anyone ever did this or knows were to get the docs?
I know my problem is also solvable by reading the row into a single column and then using a script component to split them but that is not the solution I want.

I have written a script source component and attached a flat file connection. The connection string of which is defined by an expression.
However when I get the connectionstring from the connection in the script it has the default filename value of flat file not the value of the expression. This is proved by passing in the filename variable, and comparing the 2.
The flat file has an expression on the ConnectionString of @[User::filename]
Can someone confirm this is a bug.

Hi,
I'm trying to write a package that imports a bunch of Excel files into a sql server table. My import routine works fine when I do not use a foreach loop container. I then add a Foreach Loop Container with a Foreach File Enumerator and create a variable to store all of the excel file names to use with my excel connection manager in the connection string property.
When I run the debugger I get the following error:
TITLE: Package Validation Error

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Error at Import New Data [My Data (Excel) [4234]]: The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "Excel Connection Manager" failed with error code 0xC0202009.

(Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.VsIntegration)
I've read the varous posts on this forum and others with people having this problem and nothing that was recommended to them works for me. I've also read the Msdn article 'How to:Loop through Excel files and Tables' and followed the directions there without success. I've tried the following with no success:
I've tried to create first a hard coded connection string in the excel conn. manager which works but as soon as I set the experessions: connection string property = my file enumerator variable it breaks.
Turned the Delay Validation to True for the package as well as the task
Set the Connection string equal to not just the variable coming from the file enumerator but to the full connection string : "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + @[User::excel_filename] + ";Extended Properties="Excel 8.0;HDR=YES";"
I've also tried to set the excel filepath property instead of the connection string and this didn't work either.
I'm getting really frustrated. Any advice on why something so simple doesn't work for me would be appreciated.
Thanks

Purpose: Need to import excel source data into SQL Server 2005 tables. Excel source data comes in nulitple excel files with the same structure but different data. I would appreciate someone taking a look at the following information and notifying me of what I am doing incorrectly.
I Inserted a foreach loop container, a data flow task located inside the foreach loop contaiiner, an excel and SQL Server 2005 connections.
After trying multiple times I went the following URL and followed step by step direction on how to connect excel workbooks dynamically: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345182.aspx . I also used http://www.sqlstrings.com/ as a reference when creating the connection string.
Creating a Foreach Loop Container:
1. Opened foreach loop container 2.Set the Enumerator to 'Foreach File Enumerator" and configured the enumerator by setting the directory location and file base name to E:ClientsDep CommBEABEA_Test_Source and *PersonnelExpense*.xls respectively. 3. Clicked Variable Mapping; created two variables called, "ExcelFile", and "ExtProperties" and closed out of the foreach loop container.
I. Created Excel Connection:
Created excel connection called, €śDynamic Excel Connection Manager,€? that initially pointed to one of the excel workbooks.
Went to the connection properties by right clicking the connection manager.
Expanded Expressions and clicked the ellipsis button to bring up property expressions
Chose Connection String in the Property.
Clicked the Expression Ellipsis button.
Put the following inside the Expression multi line text box:
A. "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + @[User::ExcelFile] + ";Extended Properties="" + @[User::ExtProperties] + """
Clicked the Evaluate Expression button to get the following:
Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=;Extended Properties=""
Clicked Ok button
Inserted a Data flow task inside the foreach loop container.
II. Configured Tasks that is associated with Dynamic Excel Connection Manager or Package:
Set the Foreach loop container Delay Validation to true.
Set the Data Flow Task Container Delay Validation to true.
Set the Dynamic Excel Connection Manager Delay Validation to true.
Set the SQL Server Connection Manager Delay Validation to true.
Set the Package Delay Validation to true.
Package Locale ID set to English
Ran the package after connecting the excel source data flow to the OLEDB destination and have inserted part of the error in this post. Please see below.
Error: 0xC0202009 at Package, Connection manager "Dynamic Excel Connection Manager": An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft JET Database Engine" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Could not find installable ISAM.".
I modified the connection string after receiving the error by removing the extended properties. The following is the modified connection string: "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + @[User::ExcelFile]
I repeated step I.6 above and received the following expression: Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=
I ran the package and received the following error in part: OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft JET Database Engine" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Unrecognized database format 'E:ClientsDep CommBEABEA_Test_SourcePersonnelExpense_OCCs_051007.xls'."
I did not find anything helpful when I searched for the above errors and would very much appreciate anyone€™s assistance on this issue as this issue needs to be taken care of ASAP.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why I received this error and what can I do to resolve this issue?
Your assistance in this matter is truly appreicated!
Thanks!!

Hello, I am getting very frustrated! I have got a Foreach loop container which I am processing files within a folder. I have a flatfile connection manager which I have set up using a test file and have updated the expressions attribute to be the package variable I set up in the collection for the loop container however everytime I run it I get the error: 0xC0202094 cannot retrieve the column information from the flatfile connection manager. I can only guess that it is either the variable being passed to the connection manager or the way I set up the connection manager. When I msgbox the variable in a script component before the dataflow step, the variable for the file seems fine. Any suggestions are REALLY appreciated.

I am using a Foreach loop container to go thru all the files downloaded from the ftp site and I am assigning the file name of each file to a variable at the foreach loop level called filename. In the dataflow task inside the foreach loop container, I have a source script component that uses a flat file connection. The connection string of the flat file connection is set to the filename variable declared at the foreach loop level. However the script component has a error System.ArgumentException: Empty pathname is not legal.
Please let me know how to correct this? The connectionString property of the flat file connection is set to the complete filename including the path. Does a script component need to have a flat file name specified in the flat file connection that it is using? I need to have a script source component as the flat file I am reading from is not in any of the standard formats.
The flat file connection manager's connection string property is blanked out the moment I specify an Expression for the connection string. Is this a defect or is it expected behavior.
Any inputs appreciated.
PS: I looked thru Jamie's blog at
http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson/archive/2005/05/30/1489.aspx
when implementing the above package.
Thanks,
Manisha
