Script Task Not Updating Package Variable

May 3, 2006

I am trying to update a package variable. The package consists only of a script task and a package user variable. I have included the variable, myVar (scope: package; type: string), in the ReadWriteVariables property of the script task.

The only code I have used, in Public Sub Main, is:

Dts.Variables("myVar").Value = "2"

The package runs successfully but the variable does not change. I thought that maybe the underlying value really does change even though the value as seen in the package variables window does not (I tested this in another package/solution but it does not seem to - not even during runtime).

I also tried running the variabledispenser method but this resulted in the package running continuously until I stop debugging.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

SSIS Script Task Alters Package Variable, But Variable Does Not Change.

Oct 25, 2006

I'm working on an SSIS package that uses a vb.net script to grab some XML from a webservice (I'd explain why I'm not using a web service task here, but I'd just get angry), and I wish to then assign the XML string to a package variable which then gets sent along to a DataFlow Task that contains an XML Source that points at said variable. when I copy the XML string into the variable value in the script, if do a quickwatch on the variable (as in Dts.Variable("MyXML").value) it looks as though the new value has been copied to the variable, but when I step out of that task and look at the package explorer the variable is its original value.

I think the problem is that the dataflow XML source has a lock on the variable and so the script task isn't affecting it. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of problem, or know a workaround?

Looking For A Way To Refer To A Package Variable Within Any Transact-SQL Code Included In Execute SQL Or Execute T-SQL Task

Apr 19, 2007

I'm looking for a way to refer to a package variable within any
Transact-SQL code included in either an Execute SQL or Execute T-SQL
task. If this can be done, I need to know the technique to use -
whether it's something similar to a parameter placeholder question
mark or something else.

FYI - I've been able to successfully execute Transact-SQL statements
within the Execute SQL task, so I don't think the Execute T-SQL task
is even necessary for this purpose.

Passing A SSIS Global Variable To A Declared Variable In A Query In SQL Task

Mar 6, 2008

I have a SQL Task that updates running totals on a record inserted using a Data Flow Task. The package runs without error, but the actual row does not calculate the running totals. I suspect that the inserted record is not committed until the package completes and the SQL Task is seeing the previous record as the current. Here is the code in the SQL Task:

DECLARE @DV INT;
SET @DV = (SELECT MAX(DateValue) FROM tblTG);
DECLARE @PV INT;
SET @PV = @DV - 1;

I've not been successful in passing a SSIS global variable to a declared parameter, but is it possible to do this:

DECLARE @DV INT;
SET @DV = ?;
DECLARE @PV INT;
SET @PV = @DV - 1;

I have almost 50 references to these parameters in the query so a substitution would be helpful.

Why Isn't This Variable Updating?

Hi;I have a sqlserver database with a field that is of TEXT datatype (not my decision) that is used to store comments from users on one ofour websites.For various reasons I need to make code that will clean the text inthis field( for example purposes mytable.comment ) so that there are no singlequotes in it.I am experiementing with making mytable.comment a mix of 'B' and 'Q'such that all 'Q's are replaced with 'B's.The code below works.......once.If I run it more then once no further 'Q's will get replaced.The problem is with the @index variable I am using that tellsUPDATETEXT where to update.It isn't changing.Any ideas would be greatly appreciatedSteve------------------------------------------------------------------------DECLARE @ptrBlurb varbinary(16), @index intselect @ptrBlurb=TEXTPTR(comment), @index=PATINDEX('%Q%',comment)frommytablewhere PATINDEX('%Q%', comment) <> 0 andprojid = '00013'UPDATETEXT mytable.comment @ptrBlurb @index 1 'B'select projid, comment from mytable-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Variable In A Foreach Loop Becomes NULL When Package Executed As Child Package

Dec 3, 2007

I have created a SSIS package with a Foreach Loop including a Data Flow Task, which in turn include a Row Count component which pass the row count value to variable with package scope. The variable is used in an Execute SQL Task following the Data Flow Task.

The package executes successfully when executed on its own, but when executed as a child from a parent package (which only include an Execute Package Task) the variable from the Foreach Loop becomes NULL.

There are a lot of other variables in the package receiving values dynamically without any problem, the row count variable however is the only variable in the package that receives a value as part of a Data Flow (and used in following tasks within the Foreach Loop).

Why does the variable become Null? For your information, I am using a variable with package scope and no variables from the parent package are used or passed from the child package to the parent package.

(For your information, we are running the 64 bit version)

Parent Package Variable Assignment Issue In Child Package.

Dec 26, 2006

We
have one main package from which 7 other child packages are called. We are using
ParentPackage variables to assign values for variables and database connections.

While the values from ParentPackage variable get assigned to some of the
packages properly, to others it doesn€™t assign the value.

For example:
Except for one of the packages the database connection string gets assigned
properly to all other packages.

Similarly, in another package one of the
variables doesn€™t get assigned. In other packages it is assigned properly.

We
have checked all the other property values and they are exactly the same.

We cannot make any head or tail of this erratic behavior.

Please Help.

Variable Inside A Variable From Sql TAsk

I've got two Sql Tasks on my dtsx. The first one loads a value into "Proyecto" user variable and the second one executes a variable named "SegundoProceso" which contains from the beginning:

"select Fecha from LogsCargaExcel where Proyecto = " + @[User::Proyecto] +""
As SqlSourceType propety I have "Variable" and inside ResultSet or Parameter Mapping nodes there is nothing.

[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query ""select Fecha from LogsCargaExcel where Proyecto = " + @[User::Proyecto] +""" failed with the following error: "Cannot use empty object or column names. Use a single space if necessary.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

Where am I wrong?

SQL Variable And IS Variable In Execute SQL Task

Jan 3, 2007

Hi,

I have an Execute SQL Task (OLE DB Connnection Manager) with a SQL script in it. In this script I use several SQL variables (@my_variable). I would like to assign an IS variable ([User::My_Variable]) to one of my SQL variables on this script. Example:

DECLARE @my_variable int

, <several_others>

SET @my_variable = ?

<do_some_stuff>

Of course, I also set up the parameter mapping.

However, it seems this is not possible. Assigning a variable using a ? only seems to work in simple T-SQL statements.

I have several reasons for wanting to do this:

- the script uses several variables, several times. Not all SQL variables are assigned via IS variables.

- For reading and mainenance purposes, I prefer to pass the variable only once. Otherwise every time the script changes u need to keep track of all questionmarks and their order.

- Passing the variable once also makes it easier to design the script outside IS using Management Studio.

- This script only does preparation for the actual ETL, so I prefer to keep it in one task instead of taking it apart to several consecutive Execute SQL Tasks.

- I prefer to use the OLE DB connection manager because it's a de facto standard here.

Could anyone help me out with the following questions:

- Is the above possible?

- If so, how?

- If not, why not?

- If not, what would be the best way around this problem?

Thanx in advance,

Pipo

Execute DTS 2000 Package Task. Mischievous Task??

Sep 21, 2006

Hi everyone,

For first time I'm testing this task and surprisingly, when I try "Edit Package" option:

1)The DTS host failed to load or save the package properly
2)The selected package cannot be opened
3)Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component

But after these messages you can see all the tasks but they haven't name!!

It seem as if RCW mechanism has failed between managed and unmanaged coded-partially.

I don't dare to follow doing more stuff, I don't know if that package is well-loaded or not from there. ?¿

Any guidance or idea about this?

Updating Tables From A Table Variable

Feb 14, 2005

I have a table variable into which I insert the results of a select statement. Based on the records held in the table variable I then want to update a field in one table and insert the records in the table variable into another table.

This works fine in a self contained test:

declare @table table(electionchangeid int)
declare @anothertable table(ID int)

insert into @table(electionchangeid) values(1036276)

update electionchange
set exportdate = GETDATE()
from electionchange ec
join @table t on t.electionchangeid = ec.electionchangeid

insert into @anothertable
select * from @table

But does not work within my sp .... (see next post).

It doesn't generate an error. It just doesn't update or insert any records. I would think that it was a scope issue, except that I can do a select on the table variable and see that it does contain records.

I would be very interested to hear people's thoughts on this.

Emma

Variable Scoping/updating Question

Mar 14, 2007

Hi,

I'm having some trouble with some variables in my package.

A brief overview:

My package grabs all the data from an Excel sheet and based on several factors, divides the data up into rows and inserts them into a database.

The Excel sheet has certain ranges of cells that determine how I split the data (and therefore which table the data will go into).

My package is structured as follows:

I. Control Flow:

1. Data Flow Task:

a. OLE DB Source - grabs all data from Excel sheet

b. Script Component - adds a rowcount column to each row, determines the ranges of the various sets of data and sets some variables to the row numbers of the ranges.

c. Conditional Split - splits the data by comparing each row number to the variables with the range row numbers in them

d. Various Flat File destinations (to be replaced by something saving to a table).

The problem I am having is that the Conditional Split doesn't seem to get the correct values of the variables once they are changed in the Script Component.

I know that the Conditional Split is setup correctly as if I put the values for the variables in as defaults the Conditional Split works correctly .

Inside of "

Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)

" in my script component, as I'm adding the rownumber, I search for specific values to determine if the row represents the beginning or end of a range. If it meets the criteria, I take the row number and and save it to a public integer (of the Script Component)

After I've added my row numbers, inside of "Public Overrides Sub PostExecute()" I have the following:

Public Overrides Sub PostExecute()

Me.ComponentMetaData.FireInformation(0, "Changed Variable!!!", "FirstSalesRow: " + CStr(MyBase.Variables.StartRange1), "", 0, False)

'set our variables

MyBase.Variables.StartRange1= iStartRange1

MyBase.Variables.EndRange1= iEndRange1

Me.ComponentMetaData.FireInformation(0, "Changed Variable!!!", "FirstSalesRow: " + CStr(MyBase.Variables.StartRange1), "", 0, False)

End Sub

Now, when the Script component finishes and I go to the Execution results, I can see that the first "Me.ComponentMetaData.FireInformation()"

returns the default value of the variable, 0.

But the line below it is the second "Me.ComponentMetaData.FireInformation()" and it clearly shows the correct variable value.

I have checked that all of my variables in the Script Component are in the "ReadWriteVariables" property, all variables are "ReadOnly = False" as well and are scoped at the package level.

This has lead me to believe that the Conditional Split task is grabbing the value of the parameter prior to the begin of the Data Flow itself.

Is that correct?

If so, should I be able to work around this by having one Data Flow with a script component to set the variables and output an in memory dataset, then have a second Data Flow with the Conditional Split in it?

Please let me know if you need any more info to help.

Thanks!

Run Package On Server CPU Is Done Through SQL Agent: How To Set User Variable In Package Then?

May 9, 2007

Hi,

I have packages stored in SQL store. I was letting users run the packages from a .net app that I made with

Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime

Now I have noticed this causes the packages to run on the client pc cpu, as well as the network traffic is done via the client pc, in my particular case this is slow.

From the doc and in this forum I have found that you can run a package on the Server cpu through sql agent, let packages be run in a sql job. after that you can start a package from an application with the SQL sp_start_job .

But How do you set a user::varibale in a package if you have to start the package from a sql agent job ?

Package Validation Error : The Package Designer Deletes The Code From Script Task.

Jun 14, 2006

While Creating a script task in Control Flow, I am getting "Package Validation Error". Here is the complete message:

Error at Validate File and Load Data: The task is configured to pre-compile the script, but binary code is not found. Please visit the IDE in Script Task Editor by clicking Design Script button to cause binary code to be generated.
(Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.VsIntegration)

As mentioned in the message, I opened the script IDE and added the code I need. When I close the VSA IDE, package designer displays the same error message.

The worst part of whole story is that if I close the package designer and reopen it, I find that all the code I wrote in the script task has been deleted by the package designer. This is not at all acceptable as I saved the package the and still lost all my work. I did all the coding from scratch for that task.

Please respond if anyone faced similar problem.

Thanks in advance!

Anand

PS: If any one from Microsoft is reading this, please see what you guys are coding there. Due to the buggy software you deliver, I am loosing my credibility.<P< P>

Execute Package Task: Error 0x80070005 While Preparing To Load The Package. Access Is Denied.

Jun 8, 2007

I am having problems executing a child package from a parent package using the Execute Package Task. I am attempting to run the master package through a SQL Server Agent job.

The SQL Server Agent job is owned by sa. The step that runs the parent package is configured to load the package from the SSIS Package Store on the same server that the job is running.

I have the Execute Package Task configured as follows:

Location: SQL Server
ExecuteOutOfProcess: True
Connecting as a SQL Server login (let's say TestEtl)

I have added the db_dtsoperator database role to both the TestEtl login and the login that SQL Server Agent connects through. I have also configured the child package's reader role to include db_dtsoperator. Per http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms141053.aspx, this should allow these logins to run the child package.

I have enabled logging of all events in both the parent and child packages. I see the following in the logs when the Execute Package Task executes (omitted portions unrelated to the execution of the child package task):

I see in the properties for the SQLDatasource object I can specify my update statement.However I do not understand how to get that update statement to have variable values and how newly entered values from the grid can be placed into these variables when the update takes place. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I have not found the MS doc very illuminating thus far and have not found any examples.Many ThanksT

Problem Updating A Custom Task

May 24, 2007

I've created a custom task, and now I want to upgrade it. There's actually no change in the task itself, but I've changed the assembly version number, and now I need to upgrade all the tasks that reference the old version number.

So I rebuilt the task, and I created a policy assembly with a bindingRedirect that forwards to my new assembly. I removed the old version of the assembly from the GAC. All good so far - I've even run the task through the debugger, I open the package as "Reload with Upgrade", and the breakpoints in my CanUpdate, Update and Version overrides are being hit fine. This approach works fine in my custom pipeline components, and the PerformUpgrade override updates the UserComponentTypeName to reflect the new assembly version number (see Milen's post in http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=893641&SiteID=1).

But the task itself won't upgrade, or at least, it seems to require the old assembly version number. I get an error message:

Code SnippetThe task with the name "My Task" and the creation name "xx.xxx.MyTask, xxx.xxx, Version=0.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=xxxx" is not registered for use on this computer.

Has anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I've got 40 or so packages with 2 tasks in each, and I don't really want to have to delete and add them to each one ...

SQL 2012 :: SSIS / Dynamic Updating Of A Recordset Variable?

Jul 8, 2015

updating a recordset contained in an System.Object variable during runtime.

I am trying to execute multiple file actions (plus parsing those files into a set of staging tables) at separate locations in parallel. I know I can do this in C# but I have a business requirement to use SSIS for all ETL operations.

Any one site can have 0 to many of 1 to 3 files. I would like to run multiple sites at the same time, so when all files of all types are completed at that site then go on to the next site in the list. I know I can do a single site at a time in a foreach loop but if I can run lets say 3-5 sites concurrently then I should be able to save execution time.

My thought is to have a recordset of the sites, when any 1 of the 3 (or more) "control flows" is open, update the recordset to let it know that site being actioned, when that site is complete, update the recordset that the site is completed, and so on.Or am I running in the wrong direction?

DTS - Updating DataSource Connection Via ActiveX Script Task

Jul 6, 2001

Hi,

I've written a DTS Package to pull information from a number of servers. I have a list of servers (Source Servers) and for each one I automatically update the Datasource property of the Source Server connection using vbscript in an ActiveX Script task and a global variable.

I have a transformation that occurs between the Source server and Target server.

As I process each Source Server in turn, the global variable gets set correctly and so does the Datasource property of the Source Server connection. However the transformation still runs against the first Source Server that was processed.

Looking at BOL it appears that a transformation stays connected even after it has finished. Therefore I assume that although I change the Datasource of the connection to a new server, it still runs against the first server that was used.

My question is how do I get the connection to run against the updated Datasource, i.e. do I need to do a refresh of the Connection, disconnect or what ?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

thanks

Custom Task Not Updating Property Values Or Saving.

May 2, 2008

Hi Folks,

I have a task I wrote which does not always update the property value (as seen in the properties pane)
Basically, change something on the form, then update the task host property with:
this.taskHostValue.Properties["Duration"].SetValue(this.taskHostValue, Convert.ToInt32(spnDuration.Value));

Stepping through this, it does exactly what it is supposed to. Having a look at the property value, it confirms it has changed.
Reopening the UI and resetting all the controls returns the expected results.

The package however does not realise it has changed. There is no * next to the package name in the top tabs.
As long as the package thinks it is unchanged, SaveXML does not get called either so the tasks do not persist.

Changing the value on the properties pane works fine though.

The frustrating thing is this is slightly random. Slight in the sense that sometimes it works but most of the time it does not.

The sample code I used was the MS download IncrementTask (Which works BTW) so I can't see it as being a VS / SSIS bug but rather something I am / am not doing. 3 tasks I have written all behave the same. I have to "nudge" them before savign the package.

Any ideas what the problem might be?

TIA

Cheers,
Crispin

Analysis Services Processing Task - Cube No Longer Updating

Oct 19, 2007

We have set up an IS package to process an AS 2005 database (comprising cube & dimensions, etc) daily, via a SQL Server Agent job on both development and production systems. This has been working fine for months.

A new dimension was added to the cube on the development system - automatic processing via the IS package continued without issue. However, when the new dimension was added to the production system the IS package no longer processes the cube correctly. Although all appears ok (and all is present and correct in the logs), no data updates to the cube are made. Only when the cube is manually processed does the cube get updated.

Anyone got any ideas about how to get around this issue? We have created a new IS package, with a single Analysis Services Processing Task, and tried this but get the same outcome.

Now, I modify the Send Mail Task to include an Expression which updates the "ToLine" property with the email address in the "MailList" variable.

Moreover, I am not hard-coding the "To" property in the "Mail" tab of "Send Mail Task Editor" and leaving it blank. Now, it does not allow me to execute the package and gives me a "Package Validation Error" saying: No recipient is specified.

Any solutions?

Thanks in advance.
Regards,

Integration Services :: Updating SSIS Task Standard Properties Window

May 25, 2015

If, in an SSIS package, you put an instance of an 'Execute SQL Task' task in the Control Flow, in the Properties window, you can see the properties of the task, for example CodePage.

If you double click on the task, the Execute SQL Task Editor appears, with several of the properties which are also in the Properties window, including CodePage.

If, in the Editor, you update the value of CodePage, then click OK, the value of CodePage in the Properties window is updated immediately.

I have written a custom SSIS task, which also has the same properties in the Properties window and in the Editor. The Editor also has an OK button. When OK is clicked, the values of the task properties are updated. An example property is FolderToArchive. If I open the Editor, change the value of FolderToArchive and click the OK button, the value of FolderToArchive in the Properties window is NOT immediately updated.

If, however, I select the FolderToArchive field in the Propertiesd window, it is then updated with the value I entered in the Editor.

How do I get my task to update the values in the Properties window, after changing a value in the Editor, when I click the OK button?

I would have thought I would need something like, in pseudo-code,

    Task.Parent.PropertiesWindow.Refresh
    where task is of type Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Task and Task.Parent is of type Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Package.

SSIS Task Or Design Considerations For Copying/updating/replicating Tables From One Server To Another

Dec 13, 2007

I need to copy all the data from all the tables in a database to a copy of this database on another server.
What feature of SSIS should I take advantage of to accomplish this?

We have an SLA for 8am, most times the data warehousing jobs complete at 8:05am. Adding an additional process/set of tasks to this package would obviously make matters so I'm trying to update/copy/replicate the data in the fastest manner. Typically we're talking 2 marts (10-20GB) with 2 large tables (5-10 mill records) and 20 marts (0.5 - 5 GB) with many more smaller tables (~40 tables with record count ranging from 1 to a million)

Additionally please indicate if the design/feature you suggest can handle (pushing schema changes and additions to the target server) schema changes or new tablesviews added to the source database.

My only idea so far...is using the import wizard (in Management Studio) to create an SSIS package (top copy all the tables from one server to another) and saving it to the server, Then executing this package after the job is complete. However this would not work if the schema of a table changed, or if a a table is added. Moreover I don't think I can edit this package in visual studio.

SSIS Updating Package Variables From Stored Procedures

Jul 31, 2007

I have been looking at the project Real reference implementation for doing auditing of data uploads. The tables and store procedures are in place using identical field and variable names. However, when running the package it does not update the relevant log entry with the end time and status.

I have performed the process manually running the stored procedures, providing the values directly and everything works fine.

I can only assume that the LogID variable is not being updated during the run and therefore the onEnd procedure cannot update the relevant log entry.

One side effect is that it does update the record when it€™s the first record entered into the table but not on any other inserts. Clearing the table each time is not an option.

This has become rather frustrating and would appreciate any assistance.

Thanks.
