Script To Audit My SQL Servers Security
Mar 28, 2002
ask2much writes "I am trying to write a script that will audit my sql servers looking for weaknesses etc. I need it to report things like users with NULL paswords, users with excessive acces rights, users with direct access to tables, etc. I need a query that will give me a list of all the users in the server, the last time they logged in, and the last time they changed their password. How can I accomplish this? also if any one has already created a script similar to the one I am trying to create, could I please take a look at it to get some ideas?
thank you,
FV."

What is the easiest way to find out what objects a security login has mapped to it? Something that would show all the explicit grants a specific user has.

Is there anyway I could run an Audit trace on SQl Server which records SQL Server System Admin Login/Logout , failed login and machine names I don't want the trace window to show on screen however would like a file generated for later viewing. Also due to Firewall issues we have, We don't have SQL tools enabled to connect to that server.

I have setup a Database Audit Specification as follows:
Audit Action Type: SELECT | Object Class: DATABASE | Object Name: SHOPDB | Principal Name: public
Now, when I perform a SELECT query with a bound parameter such as:
SELECT * FROM myTable WHERE name='queryname'
What I see through the Audit Logs is something like:
SELECT * FROM myTable WHERE name='@1'
I understand that it is by design that we cannot see these parameters throught Database Level Auditing. I would like to know whether it is possible to see these parameters by any other means using
(1) SQL Server Enterprise Edition,
(2) SQL Server Standard Edition, or
(3) by an external tool.

Question:
How to prevent a user/admin on one SQL 7 server, who knows the system admin password that is common to both servers, from accessing a second SQL 7 server via the SQL Server Group setup process.
Is there a way from shutting off remote access to a SQL server without limiting RPC?
All reading points towards 1) Remote Access Options, 2) Store User Independent, 3) Control Store as options to locking down a server. Would like to hear from someone that ran into this type of issue. Third party software available?
I've tried the following without any success: 1) I have deleted the second SQL server registration from the first SQL server group - but this is too easy to delete and recreate, 2) edit the SQL server registration for the remote server and force authentication - almost there if SQL prevented deletion of the registration without verifying the logon/password of the person who created it (again able to delete and recreate), 3) played around with the client utility to remove the TCP/IP pipe entry.
Anyone else pulling their hair out on this?
TIA!

I am setting up SQL audit on sql servers in my environment based on requirement. I want to create database specifications ASAP database created. I tried DDL trigger but Audit doesn't support triggers. So I created audit specifications on model database. the only problem with this is every specification created on new database with same name.database specification name includes newly created database name or other methods to create database specifications on newly created databases.

Hello,
I am working on an ASP.NET apllication which will work with sensitve data that needs stored as encrypted. The ASP.NET application and SQL Server 2005 will be hosted outside of our company.
My questions are:
When I create a database master key, a certificate and a symetric key to encrypt and decrypt my data, will I be able to use these (master key, cert and symetric key) in other databases (say my local development SQL Server 2005 instance)?
Is a managed hosting a better solution to have total control over the the keys in the database?
Is there a white paper or guidance document for security in hosted databases? Thanks

Dear guys
I want to publish my web site and sql server on a hosted server. But i'm worried about people behind the server. all of my codes including web and stored procedures of sql server are open. as far as I know, there is no effective way to protect web pages source. how about sql server? I mean compiling stored procedures.
and another important thing is data. I think certain people have potential to see or change all of my records, or for example give email address of my customers to a third party or ... .
Is there any way?

It return a value at which time the query has done
after 15 minutes i repeated the same action, i run the audit query and the same result is showed off on the panel.is it suppose to return a list of values by how many times this user has made the select statement on that table ? for example at 5:00 pm then 6:00 pm and so on

I need help...here is the problem.Last weekend, the servers in our datacenter where moved around. After thismove, and maybe coincidental, 1 server is performing very poor. Afterrunning a trace with SQL Profiler, I saw the problem which was laterconfirmed with another tool for SQL server performance monitoring. It seemsthat all connections to the SQL server (between 200 - 400) are doing a login/ logout for each command that they process. For example, the user'sconnection will login, perform a SELECT, and then logout. This is not a..NET application. The client software was not changed, it is still thesame. The vendor has said that it is not supposed to do that, it issupposed to use 1 connection that log's on in the morning and logs off atthe end of the day or whenever the user exits. 1 user may have severalconnections to the database. At times, the server is processing over 250 login / logouts (avgeraged for30 second period). Has anyone seen this problem? I have the server inAUDIT FAILUREs only. The server has become very unresponsive, things thattook 3 seconds now take over 15 seconds.Any ideas???

I have a report that was designed using SQL Reporting Services that sits on a SQL reporting server. It's nothing too exciting, it is essentially a three page application with legal jumbo on pages 2 and 3 and applicant data in fields on page 1.
We use rectangles to force page breaks to page 2 and to page 3.
When running the report on the report server, it shows and prints fine.
When running the report from the QA website internally, it shows and prints just fine.
When running the report from the production website from a machine internally, it shows and prints just fine.
When running the report from outside of the company network, the report is jacked. It obliterates large chunks of text, crams text together, and creates blank pages.
I need help in determining where I even begin with trouble shooting this!

can anyone tell me if they know of a way to automate the update process from development servers to live server, with little interference from an administrator
I have a development team that are constantly updating their databases along with their ASP code, and want to publish changes an a weekly basis. They have asked me for a way to take their new structures, tables, procedures etc, and copy them to the live servers, but NOT to interfere with existing customer data.
Funny I know – and I hate the idea btw :(
Any references, contacts, 3rd party tool recommendations welcome,
Thanx,
Darren

I am in the middle of a major migraton project, moving from x86 SQL 2000 to IA64 SQL 2005. I have a business need to link to several legacy servers. I have a number of problems I am trying to solve.
1) Linking a Kerberos server to a non-Kerberos server.
2) Linking x64 or IA64 servers to x86 servers.
3) Linking SQL 2005 to SQL 2000.
Two of the errors I am encountering are:
------------------------------
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Communication link failure".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10054)
------------------------------
And
------------------------------
The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for the linked server "SCDC250DB" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB".
OLE DB provider "SQLCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Invalid authorization specification".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)
If someone has worked through these problems before, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the relevant documentation to resolve these issues.
Thanks!

Hi,
I have posted this issue for a week, haven't got any reply yet, I posted it again and desperately need your help.
The article http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365343.aspx says:
Model Item Security can be set for differnt security filters, but when I use SQL Server Management Studio to set Model Item Security, it seems "Permissions" property surpass "Model Item Security" property. -- My report server is using Custom Authentication.
For example, in "Permissions" property of the model, if I checked "Use these roles for each group or user account" without setting any user or group, no matter what users I added to "Model Item Security" with "Secure individual model items independently for this model" checked, NO one user can see the model on report manager and report builder;
in above situation, if I added "user1" and gave role such as "Browser" role to "user1" in "Permissions" property, if I checked "Secure individual model items independently for this model" in "Model Item Security" property, even I did NOT grant "user1" to root model and any entities under the model, the "user1" is able to access the model and all entities in report builder.
My question is on the same report model, how to set "AdminFilter" (empty security filter) for administrator permissions and set "GeneralFilter" (filtered on UserID) for general user based on their UserID?
The article also says:
"Security filters are always applied, even for users who have Content Manager or Administrator permissions to the model. To allow administrators or other users to see all rows of an entity on which row-level security is defined, you can create an empty security filter (which always returns True) and then use the filter to grant those users access to all the rows."
So I defined 2 filters "GeneralFilter" and "AdminFilter" for "Staff" entity for my report model "SSRSModel", I expect after I deployed the report model, the administrator users use report builder to build reports with all rows available, and the non-admin users can only see rows based on their UserID.
I can only get one result at a time but not both:
either the rows are filtered or not filtered at all, no matter how I set the "SecurityFilter" for the entity: I tried setting both "AdminFilter" and "GeneralFilter" for SecurityFilter at the same time, combination of "DefaultSecurityFilter" and "SecurityFilter", or one at a time.
Your help is highly appreciated!

I have Sql Server Express installed on Vista (service pack 2)
I have Visual Studio 2005 with an application that I'm trying to access it with within a WCF service.
The login ID of the service is added to the database.
The database has remote access turned on.
The ID is granted access to all databases within the server.
The thread is being set with WindowsProvider and the services set their thread to WindowsProvider.
The dataserver is set with using Windows Authentication for security.
When I open my connection to the database, though, it reports the typically useless message that the connection is not allowed and that the server may not allow remote connections.
How to I get past this? I've done everything right.

In an environment where there are many initaitors speaking to a central target with frowarders in between, from what i can understand this best policy is to disable encryption on the endpoints, since dialog encryption will be enforced this is all that is really required, is this correct.
If the endpoints used encryption the message would need to be encrypted and decrypted at each forwarder resulting in slower perfromance, where as dialog encryption would only encrypt at the sender and decrypt at the target, so is this the best way to go?
Secondly is it best practice to open a dialog initally and send messages over this dialog for years never ending the conversation? This way the services only have to authenticate eachother once, if there are no reboots etc that is of course.
I would think performance wise sending each message and ending the conversation each time is a much greater overhead ? So would it be best practice to keep dialogs open and keep sending messages ?
Initally when i was learning service broker i thought that one must send a message and end the dialog until the next message, but i think the other way is the best option ?
Is this correct ?
Thanx

Hi
I'm designing a distributed application where I will have SQL Server 2005 distributed databases replicating data to my central hub which is again a SQL Server 2005 database using SQL Service Broker. Data will be sent from the central hub to the distributed sites and vice versa. I need to authenticate the communication and also secure the communication by encrypting the messages. Which security shall I use? Where do I configure the type of security being used? What is the difference between transport security Vs dialogue security - Full security model?
Thanks

Good morning,
Im having a little problem with this report I need to generate, so I thought I would ask for some advice.
I have 2 tables. The 1st is the actual table and the 2nd is the log table (Employee; Employee_log). the '_log' table is an image of the Employee table except it has 4 extra fields (recID, last_updated_employee_id, operation and operation_date) recid being the PK of the log table.
I need to generate a report that contains some thing like the following:
Table_Name
Column_Name
Old_Value
New_Value
Employee_Modifier
Operation
Operation_Date
Employee
LastName
Reid
Blevins
Jessica Bluff
UPDATE
2/2/2008
Employee
FirstName
Bison
Blison
Jessica Bluff
UPDATE
2/1/2008
Employee
EmployeeID
1234
Jessica Bluff
INSERT
2/1/2008
Employee
EmployeeID
75
Bill Thompson
DELETE
1/28/2008
To do this, I compare the Employee table to the Employee_log table. If I find changes (the two columns do not equal), I add that columnName and the column value for the regular table(new_value) and the column value for the log table(old value). If anyone has a solution or some sql to help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. (A query that will give me each columnName with the value per row would help; Somehow possibly joining my Employee table with 'INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS' ??) Thanks!

Hello,
I wish to track changes made to a table, including login who made the change, time of change, etc, without having to change the existing table structure, stored procedures, application.
If anyone has any strategies (with a brief explanation) or articles they could point me to, it would be very much appreciated.
My thinking is to set up a trigger to write both old and new data to a audit table but considering different strategies may be helpful.
Thanks for your time,
Esox

I have tried to make my basic audit log do more, but i haven't gotten very far;
In my basic audit log, i record this information:
table
type of change
field modified
old value
new value
db user
date/time
This audit records everything, which is great, but it cannot relate information when i go back to analyze the changes; for example, when a "directory" record is added, a user's information may be entered into several different tables, such as:
name (different table)
addresses (different table)
phone numbers (different table)
If one wanted to look up the changes to addresses of a person in the directory based on the person's name, i could not do it with my existing audit log because the addresses would be in a different table than the name table and there is no relating data in the audit log to relate the address changes to a persons name;
What might be a solution? I have tried a few approaches and am at a loss;
Thank you!
