Scripting Out Objects Programmatically In SQL2005?
Mar 13, 2007
As part of a simple maintenance package I am writing, the boss wants it to script out all objects from the database to a text file nightly (or better yet one file per object but that is not a requirement only a "nice to have"). I've been having a surprisingly difficult time determining how to do this.. its simple enough in SSMS but you can't schedule that :) Googling turns up a lot of people asking the same question with no real answers.. SSIS seems geared towards copying all objects to another DB - not just scripting them.
Any ideas?

ok...this (going on eight years now) sql server user has a seeminglyvery simple problem with his new developers edition of sql server 2005.I'm trying to script multiple tables and indexes in the mmc...and usingthe usual control/shift keys to select multiple objects isn't working. Is this a bug in the mmc, or am I losing my mind or is there somethingI haven't yet seen in bol?thanks in advance...

What would be the best way to create a routine that performs the "Script <object> as Create To File" for multiple objects in my database??
I would like a separate file for each object (table, view, or stored procedure).
Could someone point me in the right direction??
Thanks,
Paul

Hi
I have recently upgraded several of our SQL2005 servers to SP2a :) version 9.0.3050
and find that I can no longer script the Service Broker objects from a remote connection. The error I am getting is:
Script failed for MessageType 'MyMessageType' (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Additional Information
Either the object or one of its properties is not supported on the target server version
(Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Now I know that this worked pre SP2 using exactly the same setup. Has anyone else experienced this or know how to fix it?

I am in the process of migrating from SQL Server 2008 over to 2012. The issue is that on some of the Stored Procedures object names are not matching the name inside of the procedure itself. So, for instance the object name under Programability in SSMS is different than the name in the CREATE PROC. Perhaps the object name was changed. The CREATE PROC procedure sits in the sys.sql_modules table and in the column "DEFINITION" there lies the code. The code is in text. EXAMPLE
CREATE PROC [SCHEMA].OBJECTNAME AS OR IT COULD BE CREATE PROCEDURE [OBJECT] ( Select * from etc )
I need a way of changing the [SCHEMA].OBJECTNAME to match the object name in programmabillity.

Hi experts.
Challenge: Datapumping. To copy daily production data from N x 100 SQL 2k servers to one central SQL2k5 server.
Sometimes copying task might demand transferring schema objects like temp tables and procedures from sql2005 to sql2000.
Since system organisation is different, what would be the best approach ?
Thanks

Is there any option in sql server DTS or any other third party tool that can script data. By scripting data i mean that....
if a table "Employee" contains 50 rows, i want the tool to write 50 insert queries for me so that i can run in it anywhere.
Problem is i have to insert data in a remote server where i cannot use DTS. I just have a text area to write my query and press the run button..
Hope u understand my problem. In case of any explanation please reply. Waiting for your response. Thanx in advance.

passing serialised objects to a stored procedure for the purpose of data inserts. I see this as being a way to handle multiple row inserts efficiently.
However, in my limited use of XML data I am not so sure how to link the data when I have a dependency on another "object" within the serialised XML.
Below is a code snippet showing what I have so far.
The first insert statement works fine - but how to retrieve the identifier created by the DB - I want to use an SQL statement that finds the record in the table based on the XML representation (of the PluginInfo), allowing me to insert the ConfigurationInfo with the correct reference to the PluginInfo
DECLARE @Config NVARCHAR(MAX)
DECLARE @Handle AS INT
DECLARE @TransactionCount AS INT
SELECT @Config = '
<ConfigurationDirectory >
<ConfigurationInfo groupKey="Notifications" sectionKey="App.Customization.PluginInfo"
[code]....

I just upgraded my SQL 2000 server to SQL2005. I forked out all that money, and now it takes 4~5 seconds for a webpage to load. You can see for yourself. It's pathetic. When I ran SQL2000, i was getting instant results on any webpage. I can't find any tool to optimize the tables or databases. And when I used caused SQL Server to use 100% cpu and 500+MB of ram. I can't have this. Can anyone give me some tips as to why SQL 2005 is so slow?

I am unable to install 32-bit SQL Server Integration Services on the server due to something that was left behind by the 64-bit version.
I've uninstalled SQL Server 2005 64-bit and when I try to install the 32-bit version of Integration Services, I get this error: "Failed to install and configure assemblies C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server90DTSTasksMicrosoft.SqlServer.MSMQTask.dll in the COM+ catalog. Error: -2146233087 Error message: Unknown error 0x80131501 Error descrition: FATAL: Could not find component 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Task.MessageQueueTask.ServCompMQTask' we just installed."
I can't seem to figure out how to resolve this problem with the COM+ and I can't remember if Integration Services is required.
Can anybody please advise?

Hello,
I have a vb program that include a dts package that has been saved to vb with sql2000 dts wizard and works very good.
Now that I upgrade my website to sql2005, this vb dts package doesn't work.
The error I get is:
Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) Package
Invalid STDGMEDIUM structure
(Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) Package (80040066): Invalid STDGMEDIUM structure
) (Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000) (80004005): [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Incorrect syntax near ')'.)
I searched in the internet how to make dts package in sql2005 and save it to vb and found no information about it.
What Can I do to get the vb code of the dts package I create in sql2005 or how do i migrage the sql2000 vb dts package code to sql2005?
Thanks,
Kubyustus

I have some production boxes on Win 2000 32-bits OS and some production servers have been upgraded to Win2003 64-bit OS runing SQL Server 2005. There are also a number of Win2003 32-bit OS running SQL 2005.
The issue is that when linking the 64-bit production servers to the 32-bit boxes running SQL 2005 / Win 2003 OS, the linking seems to succeed, but I am unable to see a number of entries in sys.objects. Typically, these objects are User Stored Procedures.
Moreover, the linking seemed to have worked, but data extraction does not take place between the servers. However, there are no errors. The objects (user stored procs) exist on the 64-bit side, but linking does not actually happen.
Microsoft KB has addressed this in SQL 2000 case in this KB article, but has not suggested a solution for SQL 2005.
Any ideas? Has anyone else encountered this?
Thanks.

What I need to do - can it be done without scripting?
1.) I need to get a list of sp's from a table (EXEC SQL task)
2.) Next, loop through the list of sp's and execute (FOREACHLOOP)
3.) Then, write the output of each sp to a uniquely named file. (DATA FLOW task)
So far, I have had success with 1 and 2. But getting the DATA FLOW task to work has been imposssible thus far.
I tried everything I can think of. I even created a child package that gets called from the FOREACHLOOP, using a Parent Variable Configuration to pass down the name of the stored procedure variable to the child package. No dice.
I am ready to throw in the towel here.
So, my question is, can what I want to do even be DONE without scripting? I was trying to avoid the "manual" approach to this project. It seems like what I want to do "should" be so simple.
In sum, I am simply trying to read a list of sp's from a table, execute the sp's, then write the output of the sp's to a uniquely named file.
Can this be done without scripting? I am beginning to think NOT.
Sigh. This is driving me crazy.
Please, any advice!!
Thanks

Hi Gurus/MVPS:
Can you please share or show me the code for scripting out stored procedures in SQL Server 2005 using SQL Cmd?. I need to perform the following:
1). Script out the text of the stored procedure
2). Output to a sql file (text file) under some directory like C:sql
3). Import the file into the destination db and run it.
The above three need to be automated in a DTS Package. I tried to use the DMO but my source server is a SQL2k5 and so DTS desginer does not let me use the ActiveX with DMO against SQL 2k5. I need to run the first step against a SQL2k5 machine and the second and third on a SQL2k machine.
Please help!!!.
Thanks

I just starting working for a new client this week. They have a custom install program written in VB.NET which installs the database to SQL Server 2000. Normally, when I want to create a SQL script to create a database, I would go into Enterprise Manager, right-click on a database, and select All Tasks | Generate SQL Script. However, that's not how this client works. Much to my horror, the CREATE DATABASE, CREATE TABLE, etc. statements are both hard-coded and hand-coded within the install program itself. When I asked them why they weren't using SQL Server's scripting capabilities to automatically generate the script, they said that SQL Server scripting is buggy and that it doesn't work properly. It was hard getting specific details but they said it would leave out indexes, for example. Now, I'm no SQL Server expert, but I've never had a problem using SQL Server's scripting capabilities. The database they use isn't that big - maybe 20-30 tables. So, before I make an issue out of it, I was wondering what everyone else's experience with SQL Server 2000's scripting features? If you've used SQL Servers scripting to recreate a database, does it work? Did you have issues?

Hi,
Just getting into scripting sql. I have a little script that adds and drops a default value for a column. But I cannot get it to run when the column already has a default value specified. If I didn't script the contraint and specify a name I have no name to specify when trying to drop it.
ALTER TABLE users ADD CONSTRAINT dev1 DEFAULT 1 FOR ns_email_flag
ALTER TABLE users DROP CONSTRAINT dev1
How do I remove any existing default values using script?
TIA,
Seoras.

I am currently running SQL7 sp3 and will be moving the database to SQL2k. I have restored the database without any problems, but have not moved the dts packages. What would be the best solution: script the packages, save the packages to the 2k db, or just build from scratch? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks! -J-

I would like to move over all of my DTS packages and corresponding jobs onto another MS SQL server machine. The problem that I have is that I haven't been able to find any straight-forward info on how to script up these jobs, move them onto another machine and execute them. I have scanned through previous posts written by people with the same problem, but every response is simply "script up the jobs and move them onto another server." Maybe I'm missing something, but how "exactly" do I get a job to show up on this destination machine in EM, in the management/sql server agent/jobs folder. I did the jobs/all tasks/script job... but then what? I saved it on this destination machine, but am unclear as what to do next. The MS SQL Server Administrators companion book is of no help on this subject, and I do not understand how this simple task can be so confusing and is not documented. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
