Scripting Role/schema

Mar 7, 2006

I'm trying to give permissions to a particular user to execute a collection of stored procedures. From what I read, it seems the best way is to define a role and schema - I've called it db_executeusersp, and use it to grant Execute permission to a set of stored procedures. I can then create the user and simply add that role to the user and all is wonderful.

But, I'm trying to figure out how to script this thing. In SQL Server Management studio, I can script the objects, but cannot figure out how to script the connection between the schema / role and stored procedure. All I get is a script of the object definition.

Any ideas??

Scripting Variables With Schema Compare Via Msbuild?

Jun 12, 2015

I'm trying to automate comparing the dacpacs we're generating from out builds against our production server to monitor drift. However, we use scripting variables to define cross database references.  The schema compare is showing up all the objects which reference the other database via scripting variable as being different to what is on the server i.e. it reports a change between a table referenced as  [$(db)].dbo.Table in the dacpac  and db.dbo.Table in the target database.

When I do a comparison in Visual studio between the project and the target database the variables seem to be appropriately replaced and the differences don't show.  Obviously this is using a project instead of a dacpac but I'm hoping I can get the dacpac/db compare to behave similarly to the project/db comparison.

Is there a way to define what the scripting variables should resolve to when I run the comparison via msbuild?

Edit:  I would prefer not to deploy the dacpac and diff the deployed db against the target database but if that's the only way....

Restrict Role To CREATE TABLE On An Assigned SCHEMA

May 9, 2008

Can anyone help me with this? The objective is to allow an application user (with db_datareader & db_datawriter database roles assigned) to be able to create tables in the assigned schema (dbo) via a new role.

-- Create User

use master

go

create login DBA with password='xx', CHECK_EXPIRATION=ON, CHECK_POLICY=ON

use AdventureWorks

go

create user dba from login DBA
alter user dba with DEFAULT_SCHEMA=dbo

go

-- Create Role

use AdventureWorks

go

create role sp_ddl_role AUTHORIZATION dbo

grant CREATE TABLE to sp_ddl_role

-- assign user to Role

use AdventureWorks

go

exec sp_addrolemember sp_ddl_role, dba

go

-- Create Table statement then run with following error
Error:

Msg 2760, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The specified schema name "dbo" either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it.

Remedy: Grant ALTER on schema::dbo to sp_ddl_role

My problem is that I want to restrict user permissions via this role to just the CREATE TABLE and granting ALTER on a SCHEMA will open up a whole lot more permissions from a security standpoint.

Question: How do I restirct this role to just the CREATE TABLE within a SCHEMA?

What Is The Difference Between Db_accessadmin ROLE And Db_accessadmin SCHEMA

May 16, 2008

The question is pretty simple so I don't see why it is so difficult to understand. I do hope somebody answers with something useful.

The problem is that SQL Server 2005 defines several default ROLES such as db_accessadmin, db_backupoperator, db_datareader, etc. and at the same time it also defines SCHEMAS with the same name (db_accessadmin, db_backupoperator, db_datareader).

I have no idea what MS developers where thinking but that is utterly confusing. When creating a role using Management studio one should be able to "grant" these default ROLES to the role one is creating (or the user), instead one is presented with schemas.

For example, when creating a new database role if you select the db_datareader SCHEMA (because ROLES are not presented...) then you can select the various permissions (CONTROL, SELECT, ALTER, etc.). That is ok if the object is a user defined schema but totally confusing for default db_ schemas. Why would one grant other than SELECT to db_datareader schema?

I am still confused about this and is hindering the implementation of a proper database role structure.

Mar 16, 2004

Hi to all
Is there any option in sql server DTS or any other third party tool that can script data. By scripting data i mean that....

if a table "Employee" contains 50 rows, i want the tool to write 50 insert queries for me so that i can run in it anywhere.

Problem is i have to insert data in a remote server where i cannot use DTS. I just have a text area to write my query and press the run button..

Hope u understand my problem. In case of any explanation please reply. Waiting for your response. Thanx in advance.

The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' Requires A Database Schema Compatible With Schema Version '1'.

Sep 27, 2007

Locally I develop in SQL server 2005 enterprise. Recently I recreated my db on the server of my hosting company (in sql server 2005 express).I basically recreated the tables and copied the data in it.I now receive the following error when I hit the DB:The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' requires a
database schema compatible with schema version '1'.  However, the
current database schema is not compatible with this version.  You may
need to either install a compatible schema with aspnet_regsql.exe
(available in the framework installation directory), or upgrade the
provider to a newer version.I heard something about running aspnet_regsql.exe, but I dont have that access to the DB. Also I dont know if this command does anything more than creating the membership tables and filling it with some default data...Any other solutions/thought on what this can be?Thanks!

Can't Make Database Role A Member Of Another Database Role In 2005.

Jan 9, 2006

In sql server 2000, I created some custom database roles called ProjectLeader and Developer.  I would make these roles a member in the fixed database roles so that I would only have to add the user to the ProjectLeader or Developer role once and they would presto-magico have the security I wanted them to have with no unecessary mouse clicking.  I'm not sure how to repeat this process in 2005?  Management Studio doesn't seem to allow you to add a role as a member in another role.  Is there a work around or solution for this?

Moving Data From One DB Schema To Another DB Schema Using SSIS

May 8, 2007

Hello,

I would like to use SSIS tool to move the data from one database schema to another database schema.

For example:

Source table has

1. UserName (varchar 20) (no null)

2. Email (varchar 50) (can be null)

Destination table has

1. UserID (uniqueidentifier - GUID)

2. UserName (varchar 50) (no null)

3. EmailAddress (nvarchar 50) (can be null)

4. DateTime

Questions:

1. What controls do I use in my Data Flow to make data move between databases with different data types and include new value in UserID as a new GUID and DateTime as a date (GETDATE)?

OLE DB Source, OLE DB Destination, Data Converson and .....

How do I insert Guid and Date at the same time?

2. I have many tables to do data moving. Any sugestions? How do I architect my project? If I create many data flows for each table - it will look complicated.

Please give me some advices here.

Thanks.

Adding A Database Role To A Database Role

Feb 29, 2008

Hi,

I have SQL server 2005 (Developer edition) installed and I want to add a database role to a database role. It is working on my SQL 2000 server, however, when I tried to do the same thing on SQL2005, It didn't allowed me.

When I go to the Add role and then adding members to the role, the browse screen does not allow me the choice of object type Roles. It only shows me "Users".

Can someone please help me with this and provide me some information of how / what should I set to get the Roles in object types list so I can add a role to a role.

I Just Need To Know - Is This Even Possible To Do W/o Scripting???

Mar 21, 2007

What I need to do - can it be done without scripting?

1.) I need to get a list of sp's from a table (EXEC SQL task)

2.) Next, loop through the list of sp's and execute (FOREACHLOOP)

3.) Then, write the output of each sp to a uniquely named file. (DATA FLOW task)

So far, I have had success with 1 and 2. But getting the DATA FLOW task to work has been imposssible thus far.

I tried everything I can think of. I even created a child package that gets called from the FOREACHLOOP, using a Parent Variable Configuration to pass down the name of the stored procedure variable to the child package. No dice.

I am ready to throw in the towel here.

So, my question is, can what I want to do even be DONE without scripting? I was trying to avoid the "manual" approach to this project. It seems like what I want to do "should" be so simple.

In sum, I am simply trying to read a list of sp's from a table, execute the sp's, then write the output of the sp's to a uniquely named file.

Can this be done without scripting? I am beginning to think NOT.

Sigh. This is driving me crazy.

Please, any advice!!

Thanks

SQL CMD And Scripting

Hi Gurus/MVPS:

Can you please share or show me the code for scripting out stored procedures in SQL Server 2005 using SQL Cmd?. I need to perform the following:

1). Script out the text of the stored procedure

2). Output to a sql file (text file) under some directory like C:sql

3). Import the file into the destination db and run it.

The above three need to be automated in a DTS Package. I tried to use the DMO but my source server is a SQL2k5 and so DTS desginer does not let me use the ActiveX with DMO against SQL 2k5. I need to run the first step against a SQL2k5 machine and the second and third on a SQL2k machine.

Please help!!!.

Scripting A Database

Nov 18, 2003

I just starting working for a new client this week. They have a custom install program written in VB.NET which installs the database to SQL Server 2000. Normally, when I want to create a SQL script to create a database, I would go into Enterprise Manager, right-click on a database, and select All Tasks | Generate SQL Script. However, that's not how this client works. Much to my horror, the CREATE DATABASE, CREATE TABLE, etc. statements are both hard-coded and hand-coded within the install program itself. When I asked them why they weren't using SQL Server's scripting capabilities to automatically generate the script, they said that SQL Server scripting is buggy and that it doesn't work properly. It was hard getting specific details but they said it would leave out indexes, for example. Now, I'm no SQL Server expert, but I've never had a problem using SQL Server's scripting capabilities. The database they use isn't that big - maybe 20-30 tables. So, before I make an issue out of it, I was wondering what everyone else's experience with SQL Server 2000's scripting features? If you've used SQL Servers scripting to recreate a database, does it work? Did you have issues?

ALTER TABLE users DROP CONSTRAINT dev1

How do I remove any existing default values using script?

Scripting Jobs

Apr 10, 2001

I would like to move over all of my DTS packages and corresponding jobs onto another MS SQL server machine. The problem that I have is that I haven't been able to find any straight-forward info on how to script up these jobs, move them onto another machine and execute them. I have scanned through previous posts written by people with the same problem, but every response is simply "script up the jobs and move them onto another server." Maybe I'm missing something, but how "exactly" do I get a job to show up on this destination machine in EM, in the management/sql server agent/jobs folder. I did the jobs/all tasks/script job... but then what? I saved it on this destination machine, but am unclear as what to do next. The MS SQL Server Administrators companion book is of no help on this subject, and I do not understand how this simple task can be so confusing and is not documented. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
