Scripting Stored Procedure Add With Linked Server Reference When Linked Server Is Not Available
Jul 18, 2006
Is there a way to bypass the syntax checking when adding a stored procedure via a script?
I have a script that has a LINKed server reference (see below) .
INSERT
INTO ACTDMSLINKED.ACTDMS.DBO.COILS ..etc.
ACTDMSLINKED does not exist at the time I need to add the stored procedure that references it.
PLEASE to not tell me to add the LINK and then run the script. This is not an option in this scenerio.
Thanks,
Terry

HiWe're trying to use call a stored procedure to update information in aremote Ingres database. We've linked the server, and can readinformation using SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY (..........), but we can'tfind a suitable syntax for executing a procedure.Using SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY and passing the EXEC statement in astring gives a message about not returning any columns - not surprisingas there aren't any, and trying to execute the procedure more directlyusing:-EXECUTE abrs..vipdba.ats_reader_pi0 ........Gives the errorCould not execute procedure 'ats_reader_pi0' on remote server 'abrs'.[OLE/DB provider returned message: Parameter type cannot be determinedfor at least one variant parameter.]Any bright ideas?Chloe

Has any one else encountered this problem before ?

I am using Linked Server in SQL Server 2008R2 connecting to a couple of Linked Servers.
I was able to connect Linked Servers, but I cannot point to a specific database in a Linked Server, also, I cannot rename Linked Server's name.
How to point the linked server to a specific database? How to rename the Linked Server?
The following is the code that I am using right now:
USE [master]
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver
@server = N'Machine123Instance456',
@srvproduct=N'SQL Server' ;
GO
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'Machine123Instance456', 'false', NULL, 'username', 'password'

Hello,
I'm very boggled as to what is going on with my procedure.
I have a procedure that is using linked tables and when I execute it, it take approximately 45 seconds to run it.
However, If i take the exact piece of code and run it in query analyzer with the parameters put in manually,
then the whole thing takes less then 10 seconds. I don't understand. Has anyone run into something similar?
Am I doing somethign wrong? What can I do to speed it up.
I tried setting the value to true for sp_serveroption for that particular linked server, but when I did that, it took over 1 minute to run.
This is so mind boggling. I've checked all the indexes, statstics and restarted both of the instances and still not sure what is going on.
Any one know what i can do to resolve this issue?

I am trying to call a DB2 procedure in SQl server through a linked server object. I use the IBMDADB2 provider for the linked server. on the DB2 I have a simple procedure with 2 in and 1 out paramater. on DB2 it works no problem.but in SQL server I just cannot get it to work.
so my code:
DB2IBM is the name of the linked server.
declare @I_DIS smallint
declare @I_UID char(8)
declare @ID_TICK int
alternative 1:
Exec ('Call btp.GET_TICK(?,?,?)',@I_DIS, @I_UID, @ID_TICK OUTPUT) AT DB2IBM
alternative 2:
EXECUTE DB2IBM..BTP.GET_TICK 2,'19', @ID_TICK
in both cases I got the same error:
OLE DB provider "IBMDADB2.DB2COPY1" for linked server "DB2IBM" returned message " CLI0100E Wrong number of parameters. SQLSTATE=07001".
so how can I call this procedure?

For some reason, I run a stored procedure in Query Analyzer and it works fine. When I run the very same procedure in MS access by clicking on its link I have to run it twice. The first run gives me the message that the stored procedure ran correctly but returned no records. The second run gives me the correct number of records but I have to run it twice. I am running month-to-month data. The first run is Jan thru March. Jan and Feb have no records so I run three months on the first set. The ensuing runs are individual months from April onward. The output is correct but any ideas on why I have to do it twice in Access? I am a bit new to stored procedures but my supervisor assures me that it should be exactly the same.

As part of a nightly process, I must call a stored procedure that uses cursors to update a Sybase linked server from SQL Server. The stored proc was written by someone else and is intended to interface to a finance system to upload new transactions.
The stored proc works fine most of the time but occasionally dies part-way through with the following confusing error message:
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Internally generated command failed to affect a row.]
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Sybase.ASEOLEDBProvider' IRowsetChange::SetData returned 0x80004005: ].
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Server ********, Procedure ********, Line 162
OLE DB provider 'Sybase.ASEOLEDBProvider' reported an error.
I initially ran this stored proc from a perl script via an ODBC link but in the futile hope of fixing this problem I tried manually executing it via isql.exe instead. Both return exactly the same error. I have also increased the OLE/DB query timeout to 15 minutes with no success in stopping the problem.
There seems to be no connection I can spot between when it succeeds and when it fails. When scheduled to run just after midnight it fails about 30% of the time (at a time when there should be a light load on the servers). When run manually it almost always suceeds (I have only managed to get it to fail through running manually once in dozens of attempts).
I can't seem to find anything relevant about this error via Google or any of my usual reference sources so hoped someone else might have a clue as to what the hell's going on. :confused:
The stored procedure uses a cursor to traverse a SELECT statement then performs several INSERTs, UPDATEs and DELETEs depending upon each row processed and attempts (but usually fails) to perform a ROLLBACK upon an error.
I'd appreciate any pointers in the right direction here. Is it because I'm performing cursor-based operations on a linked server? Is it due to the linked server being a Sybase server? Could it be due to locking problems or timeouts? Is my server in a bad mood and simply trying to taunt me? I'm tearing my hair out trying to find more information on this annoyingly intermittent problem and really appreciate any help or tales of similar errors.
Thanks in advance

EXEC PR_Linked_Server
@VServer = 'Linked_Amisys'
,@VSrvProduct = ''

,@VCatalog = 'pubs'
,@VCurrentUsr = 'CORPajohri'
,@VServerUsr = 'dba'
,@VServerPwd = 'dba'
END TRY
The linked server was not created When I executed the query. However, I was able to create the linked server when I executed this query(batch 2) alone.
Is there any limitation of SP which I am not aware of?

We have a stored procedure that makes a decision to pull records from one of two servers.
If one of these servers became unavailable but was no longer queried would the stored procedure still work? Doesn't SQL recompile stored procedures periodically?
Something like this:
If @ServerAIsDown=1
begin
select * from ServerB.dbo.MyTable
end
else
begin
select * from ServerA.dbo.MyTable
end

what pro's cons would there be to having a linked server run a local stored proc against another sql server or create that stored proc on that other sql server and call it from there in the c# code.
i would think that calling the stored proc would be more efficient that running a linked server - but please let me know your thoughts. I'm not sure i can have permission to add a stored proc on that server, so possibly the linked server is the only solution - but if i can put a stored proc on that server should i?
thanks.

Hello,
I have created a MS Exchange 2000 link server in my MS SQL Server 2k. I have created a stored procedure (and a view...) using info from that linked server. When I am logged on the server as the Administrator, I can call my stored proc without any problems. When I use another computer (and I am not logged as the admin of the server) and I call the stored procedure, the following error is always raised :
Server: Msg 7302, Level 16, State 1, Procedure test_proc, Line 3
" Impossible de crer une instance du fournisseur OLE DB 'exoledb.DataSource.1'. "
<== I know it is a french error but it can be translated as : "Unable to instancied the OLE DB 'exoledb.DataSource.1' provider"
I would like to know if I can make run my stored proc in the admin account or what should I do to make it work

Hello there,
I have a scenario where I need a few stored procs to auto-execute on an hourly basis so I thought it would be nicely done in a maintenance plan job list. I have experience with this in sql 2000 but I am struggling with sql 2005.
I have been struggling with my maintenance plan to successfully run the 2 jobs that it has to complete:
1) execute a stored proc that creates/updates a client in the Client table on the local server
(This step works fine without hassles)
2) execute a stored proc that synchronizes this entry with a database on another server. This stored proc works fine outside the maintenance plan, but inside the maintenance plan job it gives me an error :
Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM. Cannot roll back T1. No transaction or savepoint of that name was found. [SQLSTATE 25000] (Error 6401)
I have tried looking on the net and forum to see whether i can solve this but i am stuck. What do I have to keep in mind executing this stored proc as a maintenance plan? What am i missing.
Thanks for any advice
Mike

Hi
I have created a linked server from SQL Server 2005 (SP 1) to SQL Service 2000 (SP 4) with a sql server login that is available on both servers but with different passwords and permissions.
I am getting the following error while accessing the linked server in management studio based on the scenario given below ;
------ Error Message Starts
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "(SQL Server 2000 instance name)" returned message "Communication link failure".
Msg 10054, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 0
Login failed for user 'abc'.
------ Error Message Ends
Consider login name is abc.
Now this login abc has sysadmin rights on sql server 2005.
The same login abc has only db_datareader rights on sql server 2000 on just one database and is not associated with any fixed server role.
I have configured the linked server using the following options;
1. I have tried impersonating login from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2000 .
2. I have also tried specifying remote login / password option.
Anyone having any idea, would be of great help.
Regards,
Salman Shehbaz.

I have a Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise server which I need to set up as a linked server in SQL Server 2005. The Sybase server is version 12.5.2, and the Sybase ODBC driver version is 4.20.00.67. I have already installed the Sybase client software on the server.
I also created a SystemDSN on the SQL Server to connect to the Sybase server. I tested the connection and it was able to connect.
I ran the following code to create the linked server:
<code>
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'LinkedServerName', @srvproduct=N'Sybase', @provider=N'MSDASQL', @datasrc=N'Sybase System DSN', @provstr=N'"Provider=Sybase.ASEOLEDBProvider;Server Name=servername,5000;Initial Catalog=databasename;User Id=username;Password=password"'
</code>
I then ran sp_tables_ex to make sure I could view the tables in the Sybase database. Here is the error message I get:
<code>
OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "LinkedServerName" returned message "[DataDirect][ODBC Sybase Wire Protocol driver]Error parsing connect string at offset 13. ".
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_tables_ex, Line 41

I receive the following error message when I run a distributed query against a loopback linked server in SQL Server 2005:
The Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC) has cancelled the distributed transaction.
To resolve this problem, I was told that running a distributed query against a loopback linked server is not supported in SQL Server 2005. And I am suggested to use a remote server definition (sp_addserver) instead of a linked server definition to resolve this problem. Using a 32-Bit SQL Server 2008 Express on my LOCAL PC. I downloaded the Advantage 8.1 OLE DB Provider and created a linked server to a REMOTE Advantage 8.1 database server. There is no data dictionary on the Advantage server.
Here is my linked server:
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xx', @srvproduct=N'Advantage', @provider=N'Advantage OLE DB Provider', @datasrc=N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xxeccET', @provstr=N'servertype=ads_local_server;tabletype=ads_cdx;'--tabletype=’ADS_ADT’ (this test works too)
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xx',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=Null,@rmtuser='adssys',@rmtpassword=Null
Testing the link succeeds with above. Using “ads_REMOTE_server” instead of “ads_local_server” and the test fails. Here is my problem, using the following queries will not work. Perhaps it’s a permissions issue? When I specify my local credentials for the remote server in the linked server it still does not work.
SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY([1xx.1xx.xx.1xx], 'SELECT * FROM ActType')
OLE DB provider "Advantage OLE DB Provider" for linked server "1xx.1xx.xx.1xx" returned message "Error 7200: AQE Error: State = HY000; NativeError = 5004; [Extended Systems][Advantage SQL][ASA] Error 5004: Either ACE could not find the specified file, or you do not have sufficient rights to access the file. A recent SharePoint upgrade has rendered several views obsolete. I am redefining them so that our upper level executive reports show valid data.(yes, I know that doing anything to sharepoint could cause MS to deny support, having said that, this is something I've inherited and need to fix, pronto) The old view was created like so:
USE [AHMC]
GO
/****** Object: View [dbo].[vwSurgicalVolumes] Script Date: 09/04/2015 09:28:03 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
CREATE VIEW [dbo].[vwSurgicalVolumes] AS
SELECT
[code]....
As I said, this view is used in a report showing surgical minutes.SharePoint is now on a new server, which is linked differently (distributed?) I've used OPENQUERY to get my 'new' query to work;
SELECT *
FROM OPENQUERY ([PORTALWEBDB], 'SELECT
--AllLists
AL.tp_ID AS ALtpID
,AL.tp_WebID as altpwebid
,AL.tp_Title AS ALTitle
[code]....
My data (ie surgical minutes, etc) seems to be in the XML column, AUD.tp_ColumnSet . So I need to parse it out and convert it to INT to maintain consistency with the previous view. How do I do this within the context of the view definition?Here is a representation of the new and old view data copied to excel :
<datetime1>2014-08-14T04:00:00</datetime1><float1>2.000000000000000e+000</float1><float2>4.190000000000000e+002</float2><float3>1.600000000000000e+001</float3><float4>8.110000000000000e+002</float4><sql_variant1 xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:sqltypes="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2004/sqltypes"
[Code] ....
can't format it to make it look decent. InHouseCases =2, InHouseMinutes=419, OutPatientCases =16, OutPatientMinutes=1230. This corresponds to the new data I can see in the XML column; 2.000000000000000e+000 is indeed 2 and 4.190000000000000e_002 is indeed 419.
