Search Parameter By Date
Oct 20, 2006
Hello guys I hope everyone is doing well I have a question. I have a database thats an ADP. on one of the forms I have a command button that has a stored procedure in it that will allow them to search by TM# or name or whatever, (I have the code below) I would like them to be able to do the samething but by date rather then TM# or Name, how would I go about doing that with a datetime datatype??
thank you
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.Search_ActiveConditionals
(@Enter_TM# int)
AS SELECT TM#, LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME, CONDITIONAL, DATEOFCONDITIONAL, INVESTIGATOR_COND, REASONFORCOND
FROM dbo.ACTIVE_CONDITIONALS
WHERE (TM# = @Enter_TM#)

Hi,
I have parameters in my report. The user can choose the year, month and date (3 parameters).
Now I want to set default vaules for the parameters , so that the user sees the report for example for the current day without selecting the parameters. I tried to set the type of the parameters to DateTime and the default value for example for the year to "=Today().Year" . But when I execute the report an error occures . Something like : no validValue for this parameter.
My Attributes for the year month and date are from an Analyis Services Cube from a Server Time dimension .
Does somebody know how to make it possible to set default values for this parameters?
Other question :
Does somebody know how I can reduce the values for a parameter. For Example I have a parameter "year" from a server time dimension from a cube. The values which are available are "Year 2004", "Year 2005", "Year 2006", "Year 2007".
But I want that the user only can choose "Year 2006" or "Year 2007" ant not every Year or "All".
Or Other Example: The User should only choose a Date that is int the past or Today but not a Date in the future.
Thanks !

Date parameter. I created a report that allows a drop down for a date range to be selected. However, whenever I preview the report, I get an error. I know my error stems from my date fields being in this format "201301" , and the "date/ time" in SSRS being mm/dd/yyyy on the drop down calendar in SSRS.
I know the direction I want to go in, but just a little confused on where would I use the convert or cast function. Would it be in the data parameter itself, or a part of the query before the @start date and @End date?

I have a Full Text query that works fine when structured as follows:
SELECT First_Name, Middle_Name, Last_Name, Hire_Date, City, Department, Phone_Ext, title, Fax, Secretary_Name, Attorney_Name, Secy_Ext, Home_Phone, Desk_Location, Law_School, Undergraduate_School, Languages, E_mail, CMS_ID, WEB_ID, Notary
FROM dbo.PhotoDir
WHERE CONTAINS (*, 'Jones')
ORDER BY Last_Name, First_Name
However, I would like to replace "Jones" with a parameter, @LName for example. However, I can't figure out the syntax. I tried the following:
WHERE CONTAINS (*, @LName)
but received the following error:
The @LName SQL construct or statement is not supported.
Is there a way to put a parameter in this type of query?
Thanks in advance.

- (PRDescription, @wordlist)
but I get an error checking the syntax. I've tried all sorts of combinations of ' and ".

Say I have a query like
DECLARE @ID UNIQUEIDENTIFIER, @SOMEDATE DATE
SELECT * FROM myTable WHERE ID = @ID AND DATEFIELD=@SOMEDATE
I want to pass values to @ID and @SOMEDATE, such that it meets the WHERE criteria for all values in the respective fields.
What parameter value should I pass such that all values are selected? In the actual SP, I have uniqueidentifier, varchar and date parameters.

I have an issue trying to pass a search text parameter to FREETEXTTABLE via Dataset.
The following code works fine if you hardcode the search word/text as shown:
SELECT KEY_TBL.RANK, FT_TBL.FaqQuestion, FT_TBL.FaqAnswer, FT_TBL.SearchFROM faq_table AS FT_TBL INNER JOIN FREETEXTTABLE(faq_table, Search, 'cool') AS KEY_TBL ON FT_TBL.FaqID = KEY_TBL.[KEY]ORDER BY KEY_TBL.RANK DESC
Now, I want to do this:
SELECT KEY_TBL.RANK, FT_TBL.FaqQuestion, FT_TBL.FaqAnswer, FT_TBL.SearchFROM faq_table AS FT_TBL INNER JOIN FREETEXTTABLE(faq_table, Search, @Search) AS KEY_TBL ON FT_TBL.FaqID = KEY_TBL.[KEY]ORDER BY KEY_TBL.RANK DESC
The error I'm getting is @Search is not declared. How am I suppose to pass in a value?
I have searched almost everywhere and nobody seemed to ask this precise question. I'm sure this is a huge problem.
Can anyone help me please?

Hi guys, first post here. It's been a few years since I've worked with ODBC, so I'm a bit rusty. I'm having trouble figuring out how to use a char* string as a parameter for a SELECT statement. I'm trying to compare the contents of a varchar column (with size=20) against the string.
Here's the code that I'm using:
char* arg;
SQLINTEGER stringSize = 32;
retcode = SQLBindParameter(hstmt,
1,
SQL_PARAM_INPUT,
SQL_C_CHAR,
SQL_VARCHAR,
20,
0,
arg,
stringSize,
&stringSize);
retcode = SQLPrepare(hstmt,
(SQLCHAR*) "SELECT * "
"FROM myTable "
"WHERE (stringColumn = '?')",
SQL_NTS);
retcode = SQLExecute(hstmt);
retcode = SQLFetch(hstmt);
When SQLFetch() runs, it returns 100 (SQL_NO_DATA). If I type the query manually into my Enterprise Manager console, I get several results, so I know the query is correct. Any idea what I might be doing wrong with the ODBC calls?
Thanks!

Hi, Could you tell me if this is possible? How do I return results using an entire column as part of the search parameter? I need to do this in the sql rather than selecting the contents and iterating through it as it would take too long.
eg.
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tPopupKeywords](
[id] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT FOR REPLICATION NOT NULL,
[title] [nvarchar](255) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL,
[description] [nvarchar](2000) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
INSERT INTO dbo.tPopupKeywords(title, description)
SELECT 'check', 'desc' UNION ALL
SELECT 'for', 'desc' UNION ALL
SELECT 'keywords', 'desc'
select dbo.tpopupkeywords.title
where 'This is an example of a passed in string to check if any keywords are returned.'
LIKE '% ' + dbo.tpopupkeywords.title + ' %' --Does this bit need to do a select??
expected results.....:
check
keywords

Hi there,
I have a problem with multi-value parameter in ReportingServices2005, hope to find a solution here.
if I use ordinary parameter in a report(multi-value checkbox is not selected), after deployment I can click on drop down list and type possible value of that parameter using keyboard(it will be selected from what i typed).
if I use multi-value parameter somewhy it doesn't respond to anything i type from my keyboard.
Why is that?
What should i do to make that multi-value parameter select possible result from what i type?

AS
SELECT ProductTitle

WHERE CONTAINS(dbo.tbl_Product.ProductTitle, @ProductTitle)
My problem is that if I pass "LCD Flat Screen" as teh @ProductTitle parameter the query falls over as it contains spaces. Guess i'm looking for something like: WHERE CONTAINS(dbo.tbl_Product.ProductTitle, '"' + @ProductTitle + "'")Thanks in advance.R

I inherited a system and am moving our SQL2000 input data into a new 2005 database for web searching by clients. The conversion went pretty well, but I'm looking for suggestions on how best to index and query the data.
Details: We have almost 500,000 records in a pretty wide history table, and will be adding more records daily. The original table design has numerous sets of dates(first/last of different types), some small fields, and one large text field that is used for full-text catalog. The input dates are all stored as datetimes set to midnight by an insert trigger.
...
FirstPub as datetime
LastPub as datetime
FirstSale as datetime
LastSale as datetime
Name as varchar(50)
Addr as varchar(50)
DetailText as text....
I need to create a new asp.net page that can accept any specific date, or a range of dates (first/last publish date or range, first/last sale date or range) along with any of the optional 10 text fields. All input is optional, and any combination of fields can be entered. Result set has to include the primary key, key dates, and the large text field.
I've read many posts and articles, but find many different opinions about what works best. I found a similar solution that used a series of case statements with text operators indicating if the date was input or not. Other guys say no - just pass the dates as null without any additional control fields.
I found solutions saying it's best to pass dates as strings, and others that say to use datetime everywhere and just format the presentation. Some say convert dates to formatted dates and then compare them. Others say that causes table scans and should be avoided.
Questions:
1) What is the best way to get a compare dates that are entered through an asp.net page and stored procedures?
2) How to query either a specific date, as well as a range between the first and last date specified? Can it be done efficiently without needing additional screen fields for the range specification? If tried checking nulls, but am having trouble selecting multiple sets of date ranges and/or specific dates with one proc. There is always the old method of storing the selected keys in temp table, and then returning the distinct rows. Most of my experience has been in SQL 7.0 and some 2000, so I'm wondering if there are new ways to tackle the problem.
3) Better to create an index for each date type that might be selected, or one index that has all the main dates in one place?
4) Should we split the large text field to another table in our search database? It would seem to make sense to split them as we add records from the input system. Two tables linked with the same primary key seems like a good improvement from original table design. How would that affect the performance of returning all selected rows and including the large text field?

I'm just wonder if this is a bug in MS Search or am I doing something wrong.
I have a query below
declare @search_clause varchar(255)
set @Search_Clause = ' "hepatitis b" and "hepatocellular carcinoma"'
select * from results
where contains(finding,@search_clause)
I don't get the correct result at all.
If I change my search_clause to "hepatitis" and "hepatocellular carcinoma -- without the "b"
then i get the correct result.
It seems MS Search doesn't like the phrase contain one letter or some sort or is it a know bug?
Anyone know?
Thanks

I want to have a FromDateTextBox and a ToDateTextBox where the user can enter in dates (most likely in mm/dd/yy format, although intelligently handing other formats might be a plus). Then I want to use these dates as the basis for a WHERE clause like:<some sql...> WHERE start_date BETWEEN 'FromDateTextBox.Text' AND 'ToDateTextBox.Text' (Note this WHERE clause will be used as the basis for an SqlDataSource FilterExpression). 1. I believe the date strings need to be in the format 'yyyy-mm-dd' to search SQL server is this correct?2. What's a decent way to convert the strings from the textboxes to the required format?3. How can I avoid an SQL injection attack?

cmd = New SqlCommand("Select fname, lname From Employee where dob='& dtmDate'", con)
con.open()
dtrBday = cmd.ExecuteReader()
rptBday.DataSource=dtrBday
rptBday.DataBind()
dtrBday.Close()
I know this isnt quite right. i get errors when it hits my repeater.
the error i am getting is :Syntax error converting string to smalldatetime data type.

store procedure
@End_Date datetime
SELECT * FROM table1 WHERE PROCESS_DATE <= @End_Date
@End_Date format: 1/1/2008
PROCESS_DATE format: 1/1/2008 12:45:01 PM
I can not get the date after running the procedure using the value/format above. I think the problem is that SQL convert @End_Date value to 1/1/2008 00:00:00:AM, which makes 1/1/2008 12:45:01 PM > 1/1/2008
Since I only need to compare the date (no need time), how can I resolve the problem from the C# code or SQL level? Is that possbile to make 1/1/2008 default to the max datetime like 1/1/2008 11:59:59:PM?
