Search For Specific Length String In Column

Sep 14, 2007

SQL 2000.

I need a query that will search a field in the table that is 14
characters long and begins with a number.

I have a client that was allowing people to store credit card numbers,
plain text, in an application. I need to rip through the table and
replace every instance of credit card numbers with "x" and the last 4
digits. I got the replace bit going, but I am stuck on how to search
for a string in a field of a specific length.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Transact SQL :: Extract ID And Specific Part Of A String From Column

Jun 10, 2015

I have to extract a specific part of a string from a column in a sql server table. Following are the details and I have given the sample table and the sample strings.

I have 2 columns in my table [dbo].[StringExtract] (Id, MyString)

The row sample looks like the following

I have to extract the Id and a part of the column from mystring.

Id      MyString
1      ABC|^~&|BNAME|CLIENT1||CLIENT1|20110609233558||BIC^A27|5014589635|K|8.1|
ABC1|^~&|BNAME1|CLIENT1||CLIENT1|20110609233558||CTP^A27|5014589635|I|7.1|
DEF||5148956598||||Apprised|Bfunction1||15|LMP|^^^201106101330|
alloys3^ally^crimson^L||||alloys3^ally^crimson^L||||alloys3^ally^crimson^L|||||Apprised|

[Code] ....

The part I want to extract is in the line "ZZZ" and the string part that i want to extract is between the 5th and 6th pipes (|). So my output looks like the following

Id      DesiredString
1      Extracts^This^String1
2      Extracts^This^String2
3      Extracts^This^String3

Is there a way to extract this either using TSQL or SSIS.

Search For A Column With Certain String

Oct 1, 2013

I have access to a database's web front end and a limited amount of access to the server.

I am trying to find out what column a certain string is in.

I can see some text on the front end via the web that a user enters and then submits. This information must go to the back end of the database but I dont know where it goes...

I am able to provide a unique Sequence number that it would be linked with and obviously I have the string that im looking for its column name but other then that I dont know what I can do.

I don't have write access to the database so I am unable to make procedures. I am also not really aware how the front end works or if I would be able to find the script that deals with the text after the user hits "save"...

Transact SQL :: Search A String In A Column Which Is Enclosed By Quotations

Jul 2, 2015

I need to categorize some rows of a column into specific type.  Criteria for the category search is to find a string which is enclosed at both the ends "_"

Example:
_you_,
are_you_,
are_you_jack

But when I give  condition like '%_you_% I end up getting records which are like "areyou_".

create table #test
(n varchar(30))

insert into #test values
('sql_2012'),
('ssis_msbi_'),
('ssrs_msbi'),
('ssasmsbi_')

select n,
case
when n like '%_msbi_%' then 'yes'
else 'no'
end as type
from #test

In the above query I need type as "yes" only for "ssis_msbi_". But the above query results with "yes" even for ssasmsbi_. What I need to do, to get just the data which has "_msbi_" in it.

Analysis :: Tabular - Filter / Search For A Specific Measure Value?

May 14, 2015

One of my models has order data, cost per order/invoice ID and then dimensions on Fiscal Year, category, etc...the usual.

A user wanted to search it for an exact order amount.  (They knew for example that one of our accounts was not balancing by single order worth $746.13 and assumed it must be an order that was placed but never marked shipped that slipped through the cracks).

Now, in the model I have "order amount" as a field and then a measure that sums that.

I could expose that "order amount" field as a label and let them filter on it in Excel (and that works).

However, I haven't had any luck filtering on the actual measure "Total Order Amount".  Such as OrderID-> View Filter -> "Total Order Amount" equals 746.13.

I assume this is due to a few things:

Measure calculates at different levels so filtering on a measure is difficult as you would have to place all the "slicers" and set them first before the measure would "exist" at a level where it could be $746.13.  Orders by year would have $746.13 as part of it's year sum, but wouldn't exist as a stand alone line item orders by year 2015 might be 2 million.

Orders by category might exist at 500,000, 8,000, 15,146.36, etc... but not $746.13.

So I would need OrderID on there as a column so the measure could return at the value of $746.13 for one row for it to match the filter?

Basically:
1. Why it can't really filter on a measure?
2. Is there a better way to accomplish this other than exposing the actual column in the fact table "order amount" as it feels like that could cause all kinds of confusion if other users try to slice/filter on that not realizing exactly what it is meant to be?

How To Insert A Zero Length String Into A Field Using SqlDataSource?

Jul 25, 2006

I have a few columns in table with default value defined as zero length string (''). I want to insert record from DetailsView which uses SqlDataSource as DataSource. In the ItemInserting event, if the data is not valid, I want to use zero length string for the column. But I always get Null instead of zero length string. The code in ItemInserting event looks like this:
If objddl.SelectedIndex > 0 Then        e.Values("myFld") = objddl.SelectedItem.ValueElse        e.Values("myFld") = ""End If
The line: e.Values("myFld") = "" put Null in the column.
How can I set a column as zero length string using the SqlDataSource?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: How To Parse A String To Equal Length Sub-strings

How to parse a string to equal length substrings in SQL

I am getting a long concatenated string from a query (CTVALUE1) and have to use the string in where clause by parsing every 6 characters..

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[PTEMP](
[ID] [char](10) NULL,
[name] [char](10) NULL,
[CTVALUE1] [char](80) NULL
)
INSERT INTO PTEMP
VALUES('11','ABC','0000010T00010L0001000T010C0001')
select * from ptemp

after parsing I have to use these values in a where clause like this

IN('000001','0T0001','0L0001','000T01','0C0001')

Now ,the values can change I mean the string may give 5 values(6 character) today and 10 tomorrow..So the parsing should be dynamic.

String Data, Length Mismatch When Using Linked Server

Oct 16, 2007

I have a sp which works fine from my local database.
I move the procedure to a different database and modify it to access my data via linked server and I get the following:

provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "Production" returned message "String data, length mismatch".
Msg 7421, Level 16, State 2, Line 27
Cannot fetch the rowset from OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "Production". .

Now I've seen references to this error message for ODBC, but as I said above, the same SP works fine if it goes against local data views. I am working with rather long concatenated strings using nvarchar(max) as the data type.

I've tried cast() on just about everything to no avail.

Anyone have any other ideas?

XML Source: String Types Lose Length Attributes In XML Schema?

Jan 25, 2007

I'm having a problem with the XML Source data flow component not transferring the length attributes from an XML Schema to the column attributes of the output table.

An example schema that I have is:

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?><data xmlns:xsd='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema' xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance'><xsd:schema> <xsd:simpleType name='NameType'> <xsd:restriction base='xsd:string'> <xsd:minLength value='0'/> <xsd:maxLength value='50'/> </xsd:restriction> </xsd:simpleType> <xsd:element name='Name' type='NameType' nillable='true'/> <xsd:simpleType name='FamilyType'> <xsd:restriction base='xsd:string'> <xsd:minLength value='0'/> <xsd:maxLength value='50'/> </xsd:restriction> </xsd:simpleType> <xsd:element name='Family' type='FamilyType' nillable='true'/> <xsd:element name='row'> <xsd:complexType> <xsd:sequence> <xsd:element ref='Name'/> <xsd:element ref='Family'/> </xsd:sequence> </xsd:complexType> </xsd:element> <xsd:element name='data'> <xsd:complexType> <xsd:sequence> <xsd:element ref='row' maxOccurs='unbounded'/> </xsd:sequence> </xsd:complexType> </xsd:element></xsd:schema> <!-- data follows --> <row><Name>Fred</Name><Family>Jones</Family></row></data>
When I reference file in the XML Source data control, it correctly infers that there are two columns, but the length of the strings in the columns are set as 255.

This behaviour appears to be at odds with the SSIS documentation (SQL Server Integration Services/Integration Services Object and Concepts/Data Flow Elements/Integration Services Sources/XML Source), which states (highlighting mine):

When the data is extracted from the XML data file, it is converted to an Integration Services data type. The XSD or inline schema may specify the data type for elements, but if it does not, the XML Source Editor dialog box assigns the Unicode string data type (DT_WSTR) to the column in the output that contains the element, and sets the column length to 255 characters. If the schema specifies the maximum length of an element, the length of output column is set to this value. If the maximum length is greater than the length supported by the Integration Services data type to which the element is converted, then the data is truncated to the maximum length of the data type. For example, if a string has a length of 5000, it is truncated to 4000 characters because the maximum length of the DT_WSTR data type is 4000 characters; likewise, byte data is truncated to 8000 characters, the maximum length of the DT_BYTES data type. If the schema specifies no maximum length, the default length of columns with either data type is set to 255. Data truncation in the XML source is handled the same way as truncation in other data flow components. For more information, see Handling Errors in Data.

Has anyone had any luck in getting string lengths automatically extracted from an XML document? If so, where I am going wrong?

Regards,

Michael

I need to check the length of the data in the desc field and any thing that is to long needs to be put in a desc2 field, however any values in desc that are shorter than 36 characters in length needs to have spaces padding it up to 36 characters as well as the desc2 field.
