Search Tables And Get Columns
Nov 10, 2005
I drew short straw on some reports work and am spending an eternity searching through catalogs looking for tables and columns. I'm a little new to SQL. Is there a way to search a catalog for table column names?

Hi,
I have tried this code from http://jtkane.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!1pWDBCiDX1uvH5ATJmNCVLPQ!316.entry for full-text search on multiple tables & columns.
Here's my code:
SELECT * from [tStaffDir] AS e, [tStaffDir_PrevEmp] t,CONTAINSTABLE([tStaffDir], *, @Name) as AwhereA.[KEY] = e.[ID] andt.[ID] = e.[ID]
I have FT the both the tables above and I am able to get results from the [tStaffDir] table but not the [tStaffDir_PrevEmp] table.The [tStaffDir_PrevEmp] table does have a column (which is [ID]) that is indexed, unique and non-Nullable.Please advise what I should do and look out for.
Many Thanks.

Hi everyone
I am trying to create a stored procedure that will searches any of the following different columns of the defferent tables
[dbo].[Store]
[dbo].[StoreType]
[dbo].[City]
[dbo].[Province]
--I joined the 4 tables below
SELECT dbo.Store.Store, dbo.Province.Province, dbo.City.City, dbo.StoreType.StoreType
FROM Store INNER JOIN
dbo.Province ON dbo.Store.ProvinceID = dbo.Province.ProvinceId INNER JOIN
dbo.City ON dbo.Store.CityID = dbo.City.CityId INNER JOIN
dbo.StoreType ON dbo.Store.StoreTypeID = dbo.StoreType.StoreTypeId Where 1 = 1
--I have 2 parameters
1.@varSearch varchar(50)
2.@varProvince varchar(50)
in @varSearch parameter You can search any thing from [dbo].[Store].Store or [dbo].[StoreType].StoreType or [dbo].[City].City
and @varProvince will be [dbo].[Province].Province
the output must show every Store,StoreType or City in the province

Is it possible to put a set of columns into a select statement using "in"
For example:
select count(*) from table1 where (col1, col2, col3, col4) in (select a.col1, a.col2, a.col3, a.col4 from table1 a where........)
This is possible in this form for Oracle and DB2 but I cannot get it to work in Sql Server.
Any ideas?

I have a DBTable named Vendors which includes the following columns: CompanyName (Name Here)
SBI (Yes, No)
MBE (Yes, No)
SBI (Yes, No)
WBE (Yes, No)
I'm trying to do a search on Vendors where either SBI or MBE or SBI or WBE is equal to 'yes' and then order by company name.
I'm lost on both the search and the results code.
I'd like to have a drop down for the search like this:
<form name="Search" action="vendor_results.asp" method="post">
<Input type=hidden name="validate" value=1>
Show all Vendors who are: <Select name="?????">
<OPTION value="YES">SBI
<OPTION value="YES">SBE
<OPTION value="Yes">MBE
<OPTION value="Yes">WBE
</select>
<Input type="submit" Value="Go">
</form>
Any ideas on how to make this work would be greatly appreciated.

What is the most efficient way to write an SP to tackle all kinds of combinations here (where a user could give any search input).I know this must be fairly common to come across this situation.I have written an SP which will take in all the parameters and based on "IF" statements and using "LIKE" in SQL, this SP returns search results.But I wanted to know if there was more efficient ways of doing this, as you can imagine you might end up having several combinations of IF conditions.

I've a database with a table that has 16 columns that are searchable. There can be a numerous combination of those columns used for searching...
In this case the best solution is to create an index on each column individually or at least the most used?

I'm trying to create a query that searches an entire database for keywords inside of the columns for each table within the database. For instance my tables have 2 columns one named ID and the other Permission, I'd like it be able to return all the lines that are associated with that keyword. So if I search "Schedule" it returns all the lines containing that word in it within that database.

Hi,
I want to search through 3 tables (TableB, TableC, TableD) to find
which hdr_ctl_nbr(s) are on those tables but not on TableA. In other words, TableA should match the combined tables B, C, and D but it doesn't, so I want to find what's missing on TableA. I know how to search TableB (see SELECT below) but how would I add TableC and TableD to this statement ? Thanks, Jeff
Select hdr_ctl_nbr, count(*) from TableA c
where c.hdr_ctl_nbr not exists (select hdr_ctl_nbr from TableB)
group by c.hdr_ctl_nbr

I'm looking for a stored procedure (or query) to search an entiredatabase for a specific string value and replace it with another. I'msure I saw an SP for this a while back by someone, but cannot find itagain. The SP took the search string and replace string as parametersand did the rest. Any ideas where I can find this ?Bear in mind, the idea is that this can be re-used and run on anydatabase, so it would have to find all tables and search through those.TaRyan

I have 4 tables involved here. The priority table is TABLE1:
NAMEID TRANDATE TRANAMT RMPROPID TOTBAL
000001235 04/14/2014 335 A0A00 605
000001234 04/14/2014 243 A0A01 243
000001236 04/14/2014 425 A0A02 500
TRANAMT being the amount paid & TOTBAL being the balance due per the NAMEID & RMPROPID specified.The other table includes a breakdown of the total balance, in a manner of speaking, by charge code (thru a SUM(OPENAMT) query of DISTINCT CHGCODE
TABLE2
NAMEID TRANDATE TRANAMT RMPROPID CHGCODE OPENAMT
000001234 04/01/2014 400 A0A01 ARC 0
000001234 04/05/2014 -142 A0A01 ARC 228
000001234 04/10/2014 15 A0A01 ALT 15
[code]...
Also with a remaining balance (per CHGCODE) column. Any alternative solution that would effectively split the TABLE1.TRANAMT up into the respective TABLE2.CHGCODE balances? Either way, I can't figure out how to word the queries.

Hello Everyone,
Is there a way to search all the tables in a database for a value that is found in a specific column? Another problem is that although this specific column will be found in most of the tables in the database, it has a different two or three digit prefix in the column name for each table.
I think the logic will go something like this...
As the script jumps from table to table, it should first look for a column whose name ends with ***ITM. If it does not find a column with ***ITM it should move on to the next table. If it does, then search the ***ITM column for my value. If it does not find my value, then move to the next table. But if it does, change my value to a new value.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all...

I found a few 'SearchAllTables' scripts out there to find a value in any table/column/row of any Database.
My problem is that none of these database search queries seem to look at primary key values.
The value I'm looking for is a primary key - I need to find all the other tables that have this primary key value.
how I could accomplish this?

I'm just wonder if this is a bug in MS Search or am I doing something wrong.
I have a query below
declare @search_clause varchar(255)
set @Search_Clause = ' "hepatitis b" and "hepatocellular carcinoma"'
select * from results
where contains(finding,@search_clause)
I don't get the correct result at all.
If I change my search_clause to "hepatitis" and "hepatocellular carcinoma -- without the "b"
then i get the correct result.
It seems MS Search doesn't like the phrase contain one letter or some sort or is it a know bug?
Anyone know?
Thanks
