Searching Encrypted Data; Using MAC Secret Data

Aug 10, 2006

I just finished reading an article on how to search encrypted data efficiently and they suggested creating a new column with a Message Auhtentication Code. To be honest, reading the aritcle makes my head hurt. I can hardly understand what they were doing myself and I can't begin to explain it to a developer.

Are there any easier ways to search encrypted columns for a speciifc match? If not, does any have some stored procs that implement this messy MAC stuff?

Searching For Encrypted Fields In Data Columns

Jul 20, 2005

I am new to database programming and was curious how others solve theproblem of storing encrypted in data in db table columns and thensubsequently searching for these records.The particular problem that I am facing is in dealing with (privacy)critical information like credit-card #s and SSNs or business criticalinformation like sales opportunity size or revenue in the database. Therequirement is that this data be stored encrypted (and not in theclear). Just limiting access to tables with this data isn't sufficient.Does any database provide native facilities to store specific columns asencrypted data ? The other option I have is to use something like RC4 toencrypt the data before storing them in the database.However, the subsequent problem is how do I search/sort on these columns? Its not a big deal if I have a few hundred records; I couldpotentially retrieve all the records, decrypt the specific fields andthen do in process searches/sorts. But what happens when I have (say) amillion records - I really don't want to suck in all that data and workon it but instead use the native db search/sort capabilities.Any suggestions and past experiences would be greatly appreciated.much thanks,~s

Is Data Sent Via DTS Encrypted?

Jan 27, 2005

Hi all,

I may have a requirement to send data from a SQL Server at site A to an Oracle server at site B. These sites have no network connection between them, and the current suggestion is to use ftp, but the transfer (or username and password) will not be encrypted.

If I create a DTS package transferring data from site A, will that transfer be encrypted?

If not, is there an option with SQL Server DTS to ensure that the data is sent in an encrypted form?

Thanks in advance.

SQL 2005, Replicating Encrypted Data?

Jun 1, 2006

Hello,

I've been searching for information on this for awhile unsuccessully. I am using SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edititon and transactional replication with separate publisher, distributor and subscribers. I need to encrypt data on our publisher and then I need to replicate that data out (i.e., encrypted data, not encrypted transmission). Since the keys are server specific, I imaging there might be some difficulty in doing this, but I figure I can't be the only one with this problem. Does anyone have a resource or know what must be done to get this accomplished?

Thanks,

Backup And Resore Encrypted Data

Mar 27, 2007

I have two databases, one production and other a production copy.

One column of the production table is encrypted by the following syntax.

CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'password!'

CREATE CERTIFICATE cert_demo

WITH SUBJECT = 'encryption demo'

CREATE SYMMETRIC KEY symkey_demo

WITH ALGORITHM = TRIPLE_DES

ENCRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE cert_demo

-----------------------------------

I have stored procedure to add records to a production table like this.

ALTER Procedure AddRecord

@id int,

@var1 varchar(100)

AS

BEGIN

DECLARE @var2 varbinary(256)

OPEN SYMMETRIC KEY symkey_demo

DECRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE cert_demo

SET @var2 = EncryptByKey(

key_guid( 'symkey_demo' ),

@var1 )

insert into dbo.Test(id,Data,EData)

values(@id,@var1,@var2)

CLOSE SYMMETRIC KEY symkey_demo

END

---------------------------------

Now I need to decript the data in the production copy database. So I had export production data to the production copy database and also generates the same key and cerificate. When i tried to decrypt the data, no results has returned.

Create procedure ViewData

@id int

AS

BEGIN

DECLARE @var1 varbinary(256)

DECLARE @var2 varchar(100)

OPEN SYMMETRIC KEY symkey_demo

DECRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE cert_demo

select @var1=EData from Test where id=@id

Set @var2 = convert( varchar(100), DecryptByKey( @var1))

print @var2

END

It doesn't print the enctypted data. Please suggest what goes wrong.

How To Protect Encrypted Data When DB Is Stolen

Jun 25, 2007

I got a problem concerning encryption. The thing is I have decided to use symmetric key protected by certificate to encrypt certain information. Certificates are protected by database masterkey and by service key.

But I also want to be sure that if someone steals my database with all its data he wont be able to decrypt it with his own SQL Server Management Studio where he has all the permissions.

Also after some time I will need to take my database and set it up on another PC.

Has anyone ideas how to solve this??

P.S. As far as I know if symmetric key is protected by certificate which is protected by DB master key and service master key then you cant decrypt data if database is moved to another workstation and opened with another Management Studio. Please can anyone explain how this works( if its true). And if this is true then how can i move my DB without loosing access to encrypted data???

MAC Used As Search Index For Encrypted Data: How Secure?

Aug 17, 2006

I have read recommendations about searching encrypted data. Typically, they involve creating a MAC (message authentication code) table. One of the elements of that table is a HASH of the encrypted data (plus a Mac key) that is used as an index for searching. Is that HASH as secure as the encrypted data itself, or is this approach less secure? If it is less secure, then may I assume that approach is the only feasible way to search data encrypted by nondeterministic algorithms?

Searching HTML Data

Hi,

I have question, sorry if it is very basic, as SQL is not my thing!

Iam allowing visitors on my IBS site to (lets say) create HTML post. This is enabled by allowing the user to use WYISWG text editor component. This means that users can create all sorts of HTML tags.

Before storing this HTML in the SQL Server, I encode it.

I also need to provide users with searching ability. So what is the best way in achieving this? Can I write search SQL normally, as in, with LIKE operators or do I need to something special?

Searching Historical Data For Patterns

Feb 17, 2008

I have a database which contains time series data (historical stock prices) which I have to search for patterns on a day to day basis. But searching this historical data for patterns is very time consuming not only in writing the complex t-sql scripts but also executing them.

Table structure for one min data:
[Date] [Time] [Open] [High], [Low], [Close], [Adjusted_Close], [MA], [DI].....
Tick Data:
[Date] [Time] [Trade]
Most time consuming queries are with lots of inner joins. So for example if I have to compare first few mins data then I have to do inner join like:
With IntervalData AS
(
SELECT [Date], Sum(CASE WHEN 1430 = [Time] THEN [PriceRange] END) AS '1430',
Sum(CASE WHEN 1431 = [Time] THEN [PriceRange] END) AS '1431',
Sum(CASE WHEN 1432 = [Time] THEN [PriceRange] END) AS '1432'
FROM [INDU_1] GROUP BY [Date]
)
SELECT [Date] ,[1430], [1431], [1432], [1431] - [1430] As 'Range' from IntervalData
WHERE ([1430] > 0 AND [1431] < 0 AND [1432] < 0) OR ([1430] < 0 AND [1431] > 0 AND [1430] > 0)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
select ind1.[Time], ind1.PriceRange,ind2.[Time], ind2.PriceRange from INDU_1 ind1
INNER JOIN INDU_1 ind2 ON ind1.[Time] = ind2.[Time] - 1 AND ind1.[Date] = ind2.[Date]
where (ind1.[Time] = 2058) AND ((ind1.PriceRange > 0 AND ind2.PriceRange >0) OR (ind2.PriceRange < 0 AND ind1.PriceRange < 0))
ORDER BY ind1.[Date] DESC;
Is there anyway I can use Sql 2005 Data mining models to make this searching faster?

Strategy For Data Storage/searching

Dec 16, 2007

Hello there,

Don't know if this is the right forum to be asking this, but I'll give it a try...

I'm relativelly a beginner in SQL Server and T-SQL in general. The problem I'm trying to solve is the following:

The big picture is that I have data coming from different data sources which I need to store on a database for later reference. Each data source might have a different set of measurements. For example, data source 1 might log Pressure and Humidity while data source 2 logs Pressure and Temperature. Once the data is present on the DB, the users can go ahead and retrieve data for a given [datasource/measurement/time interval] to generate reports or charts.

My implementation so far consists of two tables: series_info and series_data. series_info holds general information for a given series of measurements for a given data source (Pressure for data source 1, Pressure for data source 2, Humidity for data source 1 and Temperature for data source 2, in our example). Each series has a bigint index as primary key.

The table series_data contains all data relative to the series from series_info. Each piece of data has a bigint as a primary key, an associate time (which is always crescent) and a foreign key to the series it represents (in series_info).

Alright, everything is cool so far. However, whenever a user wants to retrieve data for given [data source/measurement/time interval], this takes very long, since all data is interposed in series_data and for every search it's necessary to find where the desired data actually lies.

One obvious solution for this would be to dynamically create a new table to hold the data for each series, but that would just make my database disorganized, since there would be thousands and thousands of tables.

Another thing that comes to my mind is to create a table with information of where lies the data for a given [data source / measurement] for given dates. So when the user requested data for a given [data source/measurement] between, say, january and february, we would first look at this intermediate table and find out that the data lies between indexes 1000 and 2000 on the series_data table, so the next SELECT command to series_data would already contain a restriction like WHERE index>=1000 and index<=2000. This should probably improve the speed of retrieval.

What do you guys (or girls) think? Maybe there's simply a classical solution for such a case.

Thanks in advance!

Hiding Secret Columns From Users

Nov 23, 2005

Hi,On my SQL Server 2000, I have a table of data (tblAllData) containing anumber of columns, some of which are 'secret'.I have to let some users access the database using ODBC from an Excelsheet, and I would like that they do not know at all that the columns exist.I tried creating a view for them (qryAllData) that only selects thecolumns that should be visible, but when the creating theODBC-connection, both the query and the underlying table shows up.If I select the table as datasource, the query-builder in excel shows alist of all the columns, including the secret ones. If I try selectingthen, of course, an error occurs.I would like either that the columns for the table don't show or thatthe table does not show at all - and only reveals the existence of theview to the odbc-client.Is that possible?Here's what I tried so far:<pre>USE DbAllDatasp_addlogin @loginame='ODBCAccess', @passwd='ODBCAccess', @defdb='DbAllData'sp_grantdbaccess 'ODBCAccess'sp_addrolemember @rolename = db_denydatawriter, @membername = ODBCAccessREVOKE ALL FROM ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.syscolumns TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.syscomments TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysdepends TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfilegroups TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfiles TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfiles1 TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysforeignkeys TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfulltextcatalogs TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysfulltextnotify TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysindexes TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysindexkeys TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysmembers TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysobjects TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.syspermissions TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysproperties TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysprotects TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysreferences TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.systypes TO ODBCAccessDENY SELECT ON dbo.sysusers TO ODBCAccess--allow selectingGRANT SELECT (idx, col1, col2) ON tblAllData TO ODBCAccessGRANT SELECT ON qryAllData TO ODBCAccess</pre>TIA,M

Problem Restoring Database With Encrypted Columns To Different Database Or Server With Encrypted Columns.

Jan 23, 2006

I need to start encrypting several fields in a database and have been doing some testing with a test database first. I've run into problems when attempting to restore the database on either the same server (but different database) or to a separate server.

First, here's how i created the symmetric key and encrypted data in the original database:

create master key
encryption by password = 'testAppleA3';

create certificate test
with subject = 'test certificate',
EXPIRY_DATE = '1/1/2010';

create symmetric key sk_Test
with algorithm = triple_des
encryption by certificate test;

open symmetric key sk_Test decryption by certificate test;

insert into employees values (101,'Jane Doe',encryptbykey(key_guid('sk_Test'),'$200000'));
insert into employees values(102,'Bob Jones',encryptbykey(key_guid('sk_Test'),'$500000'));

select * from employees
--delete from employees
select id,name,cast(decryptbykey(salary) as varchar(10)) as salary from employees

close all symmetric keys

Next I backup up this test database and restore it to a new database on a different server (same issue if restore to different database but on same server).

Then if i attempt to open the key in the new database and decrypt:

open symmetric key sk_Test decryption by certificate test;

I get the error: An error occurred during decryption.

Ok, well not unexpected, so reading the forums, i try doing the below first in the new database:

ALTER MASTER KEY ADD ENCRYPTION BY SERVICE MASTER KEY

Then I try opening the key again and get the error again:

An error occurred during decryption.

So then it occurs to me, maybe i need to drop and recreate it so i do

drop symmetric key sk_test

then

create symmetric key sk_Test
with algorithm = triple_des
encryption by certificate test;

and then try to open it.

Same error!

So then i decide, let's drop everything, the master key, the certificate and then symmetric key:

drop symmetric key sk_test
drop certificate test
drop master key

Then recreate the master key:

create master key
encryption by password = 'testAppleA3';

Restore the certificate from a backup i had made to a file:

CREATE CERTIFICATE test
FROM FILE = 'c:storedcertsencryptiontestcert'

Recreate the symmetric key again:

create symmetric key sk_Test
with algorithm = triple_des
encryption by certificate test;

And now open the key only to get the error:

Cannot decrypt or encrypt using the specified certificate, either because it has no private key or because the password provided for the private key is incorrect.

So what am I doing wrong here? In this scenario I would appear to have lost all access to decrypt the data in the database despite restoring from a backup which restored the symmetric key and certificate and i obviously know the password for the master key.

I also tried running the command

ALTER MASTER KEY ADD ENCRYPTION BY SERVICE MASTER KEY

again but this does not resolve the issue.

Thx.

Data Reader Or Data Adapter With Data Set?

Dec 4, 2007

I have used both data readers and data adapters(with datasets) in the projects that I have worked on. I am trying to get some clarification on when I should be using which one. I think I am doing this correctly but I want to be sure I am developing good habits.

As the name might suggest, it seems like a datareader is for only reading data. I have read that the data adapter and dataset are for a disconnected architecture. Or, that they can be used for this type of set up. I have been using the data adapter and datasets when writing to a database and the datareader when reading from a database.

Is this how these should be used? Is the data reader the best choice for reading data? Am I doing this the optimal way from a performance stand point?

Can we make use of the CDC tables on the environment we do daily db refresh so that the queries don't hit OLTP database?
