Secondary DB In &"Restoring...&" State

Apr 23, 2008

I am new to this environment and was asked to ensure that the transaction log shipping for SQL 2005 on W2K3 boxes is working properly. I noticed the db's on the secondary server are show "Restoring..." I am not sure if these were set up in No Recover Mode or Standby Mode. I have no access to the secondary db's. I get an error message when trying to access them (error 927). Monitoring was not set up initially and as you may or may not know can't be turned on after the fact...unless you delete the job and start over.

My question is is "Restoring..." normal and what does it indicate?

Is It Possible To Relocate The Mirror Db (restoring State) At Secondary Server?

Nov 21, 2007

Hi guys, right now I am having insufficient hard disc space at the secondary server (Mirror side) due to the large db that I have. Therefore, I get a new HDD on the server (Assuming located at drive G) and would like to shift the current mirroring db to that new drive. Is it possible for me to do that ? Hope able to get any suggestion from here ASAP. Thanks.

Hans

Recovery :: AlwaysOn DB Going Into Restoring State On Secondary Server

Jun 22, 2015

I noticed that after a SQL AlwaysOn failover, one of the DB in the secondary replica is stuck in Restoring state. The primary replica shows that it is in a synchronized state. These are the error logs from SSMS. How do I trace the cause of the problem?

Error: 5901, Severity: 16, State: 1.
Nonqualified transactions are being rolled back in database for an AlwaysOn Availability Groups state change. Estimated rollback completion: 0%. This is an informational message only. No user action is required
Error: 18400, Severity: 16, State: 1.

One or more recovery units belonging to database  failed to generate a checkpoint. This is typically caused by lack of system resources such as disk or memory, or in some cases due to database corruption. Examine previous entries in the error log for more detailed information on this failure.

The background checkpoint thread has encountered an unrecoverable error. The checkpoint process is terminating so that the thread can clean up its resources. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

SQL 2012 :: AlwaysOn Secondary Replica - Resolving State

May 21, 2013

I have an AlwaysOn Availability group configured between 2 nodes (Synchronous)

Automatic failover was working fine until recently

I can failover between the nodes manually but automatic failover doesn't seem to be working. In my earlier test, I would shut down the SQL Service on the primary and within seconds, the secondary replica would take over. Recently I have performed the same test and the secondary replica enters the resolving state and the DB in unavailable.

I have tried everything here: [URL] ....

The only change I made was changing the availability mode from Synchronous to Asynchronous - Could that be the cause?

Recovery :: AlwaysOn Secondary Operational State Unknown

Sep 30, 2013

I recently configured SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability group using two nodes - a primary and one secondary read only replica.  The group is residing on a windows 2012 cluster with an smb file share as the quorum.  I am able to successfully failover through SQL and through the windows 2012 cluster.  When I look at the group dashboard on the primary server and view the Operational state of each node I notice an odd value.  The secondary role server is listed as Unknown.  I also noticed that the Availability replicas node icons in object explorer are displaying the same icon on the primary server but on the secondary server, the primary server is shown as a server with a question mark.

Am I missing a permissions setting or is this normal behavior.

For example:

ServerA is the primary
ServerB is the secondary
ServerA  lists the servers in Object Explorer as:

ServerA (Primary)ServerB (Secondary)
ServerB  lists the servers in Object Explorer as:

ServerA ServerB (Secondary)

The primary is never listed a primary on the secondary server.  Again failovers are working properly, but I want to be sure I am not missing a setting somewhere.

Principal Db In Principal, Synchronizing State, The Mirror In Restoring State

Sep 26, 2007

We have mirroring setup for 5 dbs, 4 of which are synchronized and 1 which is in "synchronizing" state on the principal and "restoring" state on the mirror. Mirroring for all dbs has been working fine for the past several months and we have a witness that has allowed automatic failover in the past without problems.

This database has several bulk inserts performed throughout the day and am sure there is some latency due to the size of these transactions.

Not sure as to why this is happening all of a sudden, but the db in question has been in this state for the past 12 hrs. I checked the mirroring status on the principal and it states that it is "synchronizing: data is being transferred from principal to mirror", but the mirror server states that db is in "restoring" state. Can anyone suggest as to how I can get the database on the mirroring server to get back to "mirror, synchronizing/restoring..." state? Or suggest on how I can troubleshoot this?

Thanks in advance.

Stuck In Loading State While Restoring DB

Nov 8, 2007

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum but was wondering if you could advise me on getting the DB back to an accessible state. I tried restoring the DB but unfortunately I don't have enough disk space. The error message appeared instantly informing me of the lack of disk space. Now it says its in (Loading state) and I cannot access the DB. Is there anyway I can manually change it back??

Log Shippee Stuck In State (Restoring...)

Oct 5, 2007

I'm testing log shipping locally and had it running between two boxes. I tried to remove log shipping so on the primary I unchecked "Enable this as a primary database in a log shipping configuration" as per another thread. The primary stopped after a bit but the secondary never came out of the (Restoring...) state.

I'm obviously missing a step that needs to be run on the secondary because what I did wouldn't work if site A exploded but I can't figure out what the last step is.

Thanks,
Jeff

Log Shipping.. Original Primary In 'restoring' State

Oct 23, 2007

I have a database called PrimaryJunk that is being log shipped to another location, secondary database is secondaryjunk. From PrimaryJunk to SecondaryJunk logs ship and apply fine with no issues. So I figured lets make sure that I am able to perform a role change and swap the roles and that is not working well. My original primary db is stuck in restoring state.

I manually backed up the active transaction log on primary server by performing a transaction log backup with the option 'backup the tail of the log and leave the db in restoring state'

MS site has the same step but mentions NORECOVERY. I am not sure if my step above does that automatically. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191233.aspx

Wonder if thats the reason my original primary db is still in restoring state. any idea?

Hello

We have set up Log shipping between Primary and Secondary DB. The secondary DB is right now option: Standby/Read-Only. I can not take Backup of Secondary DB now.

Shall we disable Log shipping and change the DB Option to Multi-user mode and take backup? or any different method, without disabling log shipping?

please advice. Thanks in advance.

SQL Server Session State - Using A 1.1 Database Schema For 2.0 Session State Storage

Aug 3, 2006

The 2.0 version of ASPSTATE is slightly different than the 1.1 version in that one table has one additional column and another table uses a different data type and size for the key. The 2.0 version also has a couple additional stored procedures.

We'd like to manage just one session state database if possible so we're trying to figure out if Microsoft supports using the new schema for 1.1 session state access (it seems to work, but our testing has been very light).

Is there any official support line on this? If not, can anyone comment on whether or not you'd expect it to work and why?

Thanks.

Restoring Database Leaves Me With (Restoring...) Message

Jan 9, 2007

I did a full backup of a db from one server(Express2005) and trying to restore it to a different instance of SQL2005 on the same development machine. (Also had some fulltext columns if that means anything)

Many failures but finally got it to report all was successful except the icon in Object Explorer shows (Restoring...) with no indication of any real activity going on. It's a tiny database with hardly any data in it.

Just not sure what the heck is going on there. It also won't let me into the database until this the (Restoring...) goes away.

Any advice on how to get this thing finished out?

Secondary Keys

Apr 3, 2008

Hi,
I am currently playing with Sql Express 2005, and I am wondering if there is any way to create secondary keys on a table?
I know you can create compound Primary Keys (not sure that is the correct terminology), and Foregin Keys. However, I am unsure about secondary keys ( compound or otherwise).
Could someone tell me if this is possible. I am looking at migrating from an Acucobol Vision file system, which makes heavy use of secondary keys.
 Cheers

Cannot shrink log file 3 (VE_Log2) because all logical log files are in use.

Log Shipping And Secondary Server

May 29, 2008

hi all,
For data ware house project, the reporting team needs to know the delta changes to the master database.

one way we were thinking was to use log shipping and run reports / ETL off the secondary server. But the team needs to know which records got changed and i was thinking of adding timestamp columns to the necessary tables (only on the secondary database schema) and that way we can track the changes.

But from my research, it seems like secondary database needs to have similar schema as promary database.

Is log shipping, can my secondary db have a bit different schema? if so how to do it?
If not, how to accomplish the above secanrio, with out adding new columns (if possible) in the master database and with low over head.

thanks
lucy

Secondary Server In Log Shipping

Oct 2, 2006

Hi,

We have SQL Server 2005 configured with mirroring to protect from physical errors. We also have a need for an (out of sync is ok) reporting server and we'd like to reduce our downtime in the event of a logical error.

The primary database is already being backed up (full and t-logs) to a shared network drive.

Can I implement the second half of log shipping (i.e. the stuff you do to the secondary) so that I don't have to change the current backup schedules on the primary server?

Specifically in the list of sp's below, can I start halfway down at sp_add_log_shipping_secondary_primary (Transact-SQL) ?? Without having to run the primary sp's?

sp_add_log_shipping_primary_database (Transact-SQL)
sp_add_jobschedule (Transact-SQL)
sp_add_log_shipping_alert_job (Transact-SQL)
sp_add_log_shipping_secondary_primary (Transact-SQL)
sp_add_log_shipping_secondary_database (Transact-SQL)
sp_add_log_shipping_primary_secondary (Transact-SQL)

Or do I have to ditch my current backup maintenance plans on the primary and start again?

Thanks

Ed

Primary && Secondary Server

Dec 31, 2006

Hello,

I would like to know how do I carry out this two cases in efficient way:

1. I have two SQL 2005 servers running. One as primary, one as secondary. I would like to synchronize or replicate the transactions at real-time.

2. When primary goes down, I would like my secondary server to take place in needless of IP changes and application settings.

If you have a good architecture on this, please share with me. I am not sure whether my questions are clear enough or not. I also will be reading some articles about these. Thank you in advance.

How To Combine Log Files && Delete Secondary

Oct 21, 2003

I have a database with 2 log files VE_log and VE_log2 (the split is left from legacy system with limited disk space). I want to eliminate the 2nd log.

I've tried SHRINKFILE (EMPTYFILE), which of course reduces the file to the default minimum pages, SHRINKFILE (TRUNCATEONLY), SHRINKDATABASE (VE), and in every case the ALTER DATABASE REMOVE FILE command fails cause the log isn't empty.

Ideas???

I am after T-SQL code which will simply load the next T-log backup file from a network share folder to a warm standby db on a secondary server. What is needed is a Third server (server x), to participate in log shipping (MULTIPLE TARGETS).

Primary SERVER (SERVER A)
Secondary SERVER (SERVER B) Log shipped to via GUI.
THIRD SERVER (SERVER X) which will contain the same log shipped db from server A.

This will simply restore the logs from a network share to keep the db up to date.

SQL 2012 :: Slow Backup On HA Secondary

Nov 2, 2015

2 Boxes in HA, identical hardware (VMs) and both utilising identical storage systems (Nimble SANs).Was needing to do a copy only backup of a few databases for an escrow environment we have, so decided to perform this on the secondary box.Small ~10GB ish database first, seemed to be really slow, so opened resource monitor and noticed that disk read / write was getting limited to about 15MB/s so took a little while (the big one is over 1TB)

Tried this again on the primary it was done in seconds disk rate in the order of 250MB/s (same settings re compression etc).. I decided to make a copy of the backup file on the secondary, the copy disk to disk went in the region of 150MB/s , so it appears that SQL Server is the bottleneck?
