Secure Replication From Cluster To Workgroup
Oct 3, 2006
I am trying to set up replication (transactional with updates) from a 2-node Active/Passive SQL Server 2005 Cluster to a SQL Server 2005 server in a Workgroup. When configuring the Snapshot Agent, Log Reader Agent and Queue Reader Agent from the Publisher (Cluster) we are advised not to use the SQL Server Agent Service Account for security reasons. When I specify a Domain Account I get an "unknown security error" staring the snapshot agent. When I select the option to run under the service account all works well. Strange thing is when I specify the service account I still get the "unknown security error" message. Anyone got any ideas?

We have a set of client servers which will include a SQL Server 2000 active/passive cluster attached to a SAN. We have all the equipment here (no attachment to client site) to configure. My worry is since it will have to be setup as a workgroup, and then shipped to client to add to their domain, is this a doable option. has anyone had to do this or tried this? Or would we be better off shipping whole thing to client and setting up cluster there?

Hi,
i need to do merge replication between a central db on a windows 2k3 server running on sql server 2k5 standard edition and a mobile db on a mobile device running on sql server 2k5 mobile edition on windows ce 5.0 as OS. The mobile device will connect to the net using a SIM card and GPRS connections.
Due to security requirements, I need to secure the channel which the data transfer is taking place for the merge replication.
How do I go about doing that?
Thank you.

Would someone please tell my how to share the same NT Login on a Publisher and a Subscriber Server. For example, one of
the requirements for Replication is that the Publication Server and
Subscription Servers should share the same SQL Executive account. I tried
doing this in Control Panel, Services Applet, Startup, and This Account Box. The Subscribing Server is not allowing me to map the login of the Publishing Server. I also tried within NT User Manager for Domains. I am not able to figure this out. I am trying to get Replication to work within a Workgroup on two NT 4.0 Servers SP3, with SQL Server 6.5 SP5a.
Thanks, Kevin

I am running a SQL Server 2000 cluster (active to active). I trying to replicate (Transaction) a portion of my tables from instance1 to instance2 but neither the initial SnapShot nor the Log Reader can connect to instance1 which is where the ditributor is located. I have successfully ran replication in the past but not on a clustered server. Can anyone help me out with this?
Thanks,

1) I have the Active/Passive cluster environment (using Microsoft cluster service).
2) SQL2000 is installed on the cluster (Virtual instance).
3) Virtual instance of SQL Server is used as Publisher in Transactional replication with updatable subscribers.
4) Subscribers are passing updates to subscriber using MSMQ
5) The problem is : after I establish replication , the Queue Agent fails with following error (“Failed to initiate search for MSMQs”)

Greetings:
I am working on a replication setup using transactional replication using with pull subscriptions and a separate distributor. The pull subscriptions are located on a SQL cluster using the virtual SQL Server name as the subscriber; when the box fails over, we get an error of missing replication.dlls. Researching further, we found that replication only works on one node of the subscriber.
Any ideas on what we did wrong in the setup?
Thanks,
Lee Everest

During the installation of Adding node to a SQL Server failover cluster(On passive node) getting error like.. The MOF compiler could not connect with the WMI server. This is either because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start. We  run the below commands but didn’t get any resolution & got the same above error .
Â
1st Method…
1. Open console command (Run->CMD with administrator privileges).Â
2. net stop winmgmtÂ
3. Rename folder %windir%System32WbemRepository to other one, for backup purposes (for example _Repository).Â
4. net start winmgmt
2ndÂ Method..
1. Disable and stop the WMI service.
a) Command : - sc config winmgmt start= disabled
b. Command : - Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â net stop winmgmt
2. Run the following commands.
a). Command: Winmgmt /salvagerepository %windir%System32wbem
b). Command: Â Winmgmt /resetrepository %windir%System32wbem
3. Re-enable the WMI service
Command:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â sc config winmgmt start= autoÂ
Last command to run after above steps
4. Command:Â Â Â Â mofcomp "%programfiles(x86)%Microsoft SQL Server100Sharedsqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"
File not found Error for above command.

I am in the process of moving databases from a SQL 2005 Standard version to a 2-node 2014 cluster. All of my 2005 databases back up successfully. They all restore without issue except for one database that has a full text catalog. I get this message

I went as far as giving the folder full access to everyone temporarily and received the same error.

I ran the Advanced cluster preparation for a new sql instance on an existing cluster.
Slq Server 2012.
After is completed, it was successful, I realized I specified the wrong Instance Root directory.
Is it possible to remove what the preparation installed? Or is it possible to change the root directory?

I have following script which i am planning to run to drop all non-clustered primary keys on a database and then created as clustered. I am using someone else's script so don't know how to modify this. Some of primary key columns are used in references in other tables.
is there anyway i can drop the existing primary keys and using their original script then create again as clustered including restoring all foreign and reference keys and unique or no unique.
DECLARE @table NVARCHAR(512), @tablename NVARCHAR(512),
@sql NVARCHAR(MAX), @sql2 NVARCHAR(MAX), @sql3 NVARCHAR(MAX),
@column NVARCHAR(MAX);
DECLARE @indexname NVARCHAR(512);
SELECT name As 'Table'

I am designing an application built on sql server 2000
how can I prohibit other sql server users from accessing my database and allowing only acceesing it through my application or through owner designer of sql server database.
my situation needs sometimes copying the db from the end user platforms to
my designer computer to analyze some problems or maintainenace or modification, and also I have no control on users windows environment and I need the end user professional not to enter the my db from outside my application.
So,
is there anything I can do to secure an MDF (MSDE/SQL Server 2000) file so that a user cannot see my schema under any circumstances.
Even if I lock the MDF down and secure the instance, a smart user can just shut off the SQL server, copy the MDF to another instance, sp_attachdb and open it with sa rights. I need a way to prevent others from getting inside my schema.

Database files (.mdf and .ldf) could be copied and explored by attaching them to any other instance of sqlserver.
How we could secure those files as we can do for Access file using a password ?

I have developed an application that uses a SQL Server compact edition database (.sdf). The database contains important data that I do not wish people to access.
My question is if I choose to Encrypt the database using the option available when you create the database and specify a password how secure is it ?
Are there tools on the market that will be able to crack this password and therefore gain access ?
Thanks

Hello...
I develop a .NET Application which uses a SQL Express Database. The application will be distributet to several customers. That means the customer must have (or install) SQL Server Express Edition .
But we dont want that the users manual access to the database.
As far as understand that is not possible because the user (customer) will be the administrator for the SQL Server Express because it runs in his own PC (no password security).
Am I right? Thank you..

Is it possible to secure a SQL Server database or schema using a technique such as the .Net StrongNameIdentityPermission attribute? The intent is that SQL Server would only permit transactions coming from assemblies which were signed with a particular .Net StrongName private key.
We are installing a 3rd party SQL Server / ASP.Net application which must run in our DMZ and we are looking for all possible measures to secure the SQL Server database.
Thanks
