Hi, i have a data base in SQL 2005 and i it has many tables with confidencial information Like Social Security numbers, Credit card Numbers, etc. And i would like to encrypt this information or make something to make this info invisible to any hacker, or any person that logs on the server.
Here are the limitations:
1 - I cant make any changes in the front end, so if i encrypt the data, I have to make all the modifications in the database, and if the front end needs some encrypted information, the database should dencrypt it.
Is there any way in which I could distinguish a group of Database users from the other users. Say for e.g. store the Database users hierarchically, etc. Adding a Prefix/Suffix to the user name as a distinguish-er will not work in my case. I want to restrict the deletion of these Database users. Even the login with sysadmin or serveradmin rights should not be able to DROP those Database users.
Hi, I want a few tips on how to go about designing a schema for multi parent hierarchical tree structure.
Will this work in large scale, like Social Networking how do we generally go about designing for Social Networks? What could be the optimal architecture?
I am currently using SQL Server 2005 Express to run a social networking website on a dedicated server (Windows Server 2003, code is written in ASP.net). Obviously express is too limited to run this site, but for now I am still getting the site operational so the demands are low. Soon I will begin advertising and adding many users to the site - can anyone recommend a version of SQL Server that I would need? My programmers say I should go with enterprise, but that seems overkill (and my hosting provider - theplanet.com does not even offer it). Would workgroup be enough, or should I go with standard edition?
To be honest I do not trust my programmers experience with SQL server which is why I am asking for help here (they are outsourced from India, and I am becoming more and more convinced that I need an onshore IT manager for them - finding that is another issue...). Also, are there built in backup features with SQL Server? My programmers told me recently that they will need to put in significant work to setup a backup system, but it seems to me like one might already be built in.
I develop a .NET Application which uses a SQL Express Database. The application will be distributet to several customers. That means the customer must have (or install) SQL Server Express Edition .
But we dont want that the users manual access to the database.
As far as understand that is not possible because the user (customer) will be the administrator for the SQL Server Express because it runs in his own PC (no password security).
I've recently started using sql express 2005. I've used the features very conveniently.
But one thing i coudn't understand is how can i secure my database from unwanted access.
I've Installed Sql Express 2005 with mixed mode authentication (Sql authentication) and attached my Database. But it also connects with Windows authentication, and all my data tables are openly visible.!!
How can i Secure my database now..!!!
My intention is to restrict access to my databases only to certain users (may be SQL Logins)
Hello, Is possible to create database file with only one user(No local acount used by Windows authentication)?
I want copy with my aplication also database mdf file with secret data .I don't want so as user loged to sql server as 'dbo' user ( Windows authentication) can view or edit it.
Let me start off by saying I'm not a SQL expert and have very limited knowledge on the topic. Here is my question:Our organization has an archiving solution that stores data in a SQL database. This applicaton creates two SQL accounts. One that is used to archive to the database. The second to browse the database from a search interface provided by the application. With all the federal compliance issues I see that they require the data to be stored in "a non-rewriteable and non-erasable format". My question is. How can I prevent the database from being erased in the SQL database? As 'Administrator' I can open Enterprise Manager and open a table in the database and simply delete any record that I wish. I understand that might have this ability because I'm logged on as Administrator. How do I prevent access to this database and prevent access modify the records. I believe the only two accounts that should have access to the database are the Archive and Browse accounts required by the application.
My problem is, I am going to ship MSDE with our product. Now the problem is that if some one copies the .MDF and .LDF files and uses "sp_attach_db" to attach the db files to his own server then my database will be exposed to him. I have tried this and it gets exosed. I cant deploy NT Authentication for the database, bcoz if the end user installes Enterprise manager then my database will be exposed to him. Is there any way that i can sequre the LDF and MDF files of my database so that no one can use that with sp_attach_db? I m using MSDE(Sql server 2000).
Ok, I need to give some details. I have a secure Access Database using WorkGroup Security logon. It is an Access 97 database (yes I know it is "old").
I tried to create a DTS package in SQL Server 2000 to connect to it, but I am getting the same error that I got before I "joined" the workgroup when attempting to access the DB. So I changed the Service logon identites to mimic <me> as the logon, and still I can't get it to connect. The user name and password I put in the connection are correct.
It seems like nothing is working and I am all out of ideas. Does anyone have any recommendations? Has anyone done anything like this successfully?
PS: I can manually logon to the database, and extract the data 1 table at a time, but I don't want to export 40 tables each time I have to load this data. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
We build up a new website in .net mvc 4.0 on a w2012 server with MSSQL 2012 database. We use windows autentification and normal anonymous access through NT AUTHORITYIUSR who is also a login in the database. But we make extra login possibility for users who are registered and they can insert and modify data in some tables in the database. And I'am afraid of giving NT AUTHORITYIUSR insert and update for some column in tables.I think of set up a new login for the database. Run a new connection string on login and set up special permission for that extra user on the database, and let the user become a member of the ordinary user on the database.
I am developing an application for a big office which uses SQL Server 2000. Apart from my database, on that server, there are two databases by other companies. The administrator also has access to server but the client only wants him to backup the database.
I have two questions:
1) First of all (if it is possible) I would like to protect my own database from the other companies.
I don't want them to:
see the data in the tables (around 20 tables) make changes to the stored procedures (more than 100 stored procedures) be able to backup the database
2) The client will save sensitive data to the database (mainly currency amounts, salaries etc) which he wants to keep hidden. I am using float type for these fields and I would like to make the data encrypted. I could do it for nvarchar fields but changing these float to nvarchar would be time consuming.
I am setting up SQL audit on sql servers in my environment based on requirement. I want to create database specifications ASAP database created. I tried DDL trigger but Audit doesn't support triggers. So I created audit specifications on model database. the only problem with this is every specification created on new database with same name.database specification name includes newly created database name or other methods to create database specifications on newly created databases.
In SSMS, I connect Object Explorer to a partially contained database using a contained user login with password. This user has a database role of dbdatareader. When I try to expand the Tables in the database, I get the error:
The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'extended_properties', database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 229)
Is there a way to set permissions for the contained user so that this could be done?
I had created 2 Sql server instance in 2 servers created using VMware. From the primary server I log shipped the required databases into the secondary. Both the servers were in the same domain whose active directory was also in another server in the same virtual lab environment. My question can we have the primary sql server in one domain and the secondary sql server to which the logs are shipped in another domain by including a router also between the 2 networks for connectivity?
I have installed new SQLServer2012 instance and my domain user have sysadmin privileges on this instance. I have a restore procedure and it will execute WITH EXECUTE AS 'domainmy username', for all the developers have exec permissions to this procedure. But newly installed server this procedure was failing with the following message. But the same procedure executing fine on other servers.
Msg 262, Level 14, State 1, Line 1 CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master'. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
I have a script that automates some db drop/restore operations and bringing the database to single user mode is part of it: ALTER DATABASE ... SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE...I want this to executes under a login, that has restricted privileges, so I've created a login and granted it a dbcreator role + ALTER ANY DATABASE privileges.
Problem: When I run the script against a database with an active/sleeping connection:It fails when using the restricted login: "Msg 5061...ALTER DATA BASE failed because a lock could not be placed on database ..."It completes successfully when using a sysadmin login According to stackoverflow.com the solution is to kill the active/sleeping connections to the database, before ALTER-ing it, which works fine, but the question is....
Questions: Why the "ALTER DATABASE..." statement works under the sysadmin login, but not under a dbcreator one?Does this mean the sysadmin login kills the connections to the target database in the background? Is it possible to grant additional privileges to the restricted login, so the "ALTER DATABASE..." statement won't need preventive killing of the connections?
i have a development database that has updates and changes to a production database. rather than go through individually and alter all relevant tables and stored procedures, id like to back up the database on the development side and restore it on the production side as the production database. is there a way to restore the database on the production server but preserve all the security settings (ie logins and such)? i noticed on our development server, that if i try to restore the database with my development database, it overwrites the users and/or if the user is the same on both, it removes the login name for that user.
I am new to SSIS. I have been struggling with this for the past one week. I have a weird task. I need to import several tables from one database to a different server with a new database name. We need to do this at the end of every year. The main problem here is that the number of tables varies every year. You may not have all the tables as last year or may have more tables. So I need to create a dynamic task that takes care of this every year without changing the package.
I have performed the following tasks **
1. Create a new dynamic database. ( I have used Execute SQL Task to do this) 2. Copy all the table structures ( I have used Execute SQL Task to do this)
3. Import Data. This is the main problem. I was trying to create a dynamic connection string with variables as suggested in several forums but I finally came to know that this cannot be done if the table structures are different as the metadata cannot be refreshed at runtime.
4. The final step to create a process to validate the data (the count from each table for both source and destination. I think this can be done with Sql task.
What is the best method to do this? My DBA does not like “Transfer SQL Objects Task” or “transfer Database Task”. I would like to create this as a dynamic process.
I have just built a new SQL7 server (SQL SP3 and NT SP6a) server and need a bit of advice on implementing database security.
This new SQL server will be used by several projects which require a SQL database, our Personnel system being one of them. Since the data in the Personnel system is obviously of a sensitive nature I need to restrict access to the data. Client access is controlled via a client application but I need to restrict Enterprise Manager, Query analyzer ... type of access.
We have a team of people who look after the servers on a day to day basis and these are all Domain Administrators. By default these people will be able to browse into the Personnel database and read the information.
How can I restrict access to a SQL database so that only named users (SQL and NT) can access a database ? If database level access is required then we would need to obtain the SQL user password from Personnel which will then allow mainenance access, after which the password si changed by Personnel.
I am working with a development team and right now there is no security on the server everybody uses the sa account including our dts and jobs. I have talked to my boss about it and he wants me to come up with a guidline
What will happen to our jobs if i change sa password. also dose anyone have a little guidline sample?
What is the standard for database security windows login or sql server logins? User defined database roles?
We have earlier used a single sql server login with read/write permissions to tables & exec on stored procedures. Individual application users are stored in database tables & their permissions are handled by the application itself. But we are starting to get concerned about password issues with the sql login & also that when I see any connections on the database, all of hem show up with the same sql login. So I cannot make out which user exactly has a connection open.
To get around these issues, we are thinking to add NT logins for each user. These users will be part of an NT group and will be added as a user to the database. There will be a database role with exec permissions to required stored procedures (all read/write/update will be controlled through SPs) and the NT group will be part of this role. The stored procedures will be encrypted. So if a NT user logs in directly to the database, he wont be able to read from the tables or SPs and access will be limited through the application. I will be able to see each login associated with a connection.
What do you all think about this security set up? What are other issues I need to be concerned about? What are other popular database security models?
Hi experts, I would like to ask if it is feasible to limit the accessibility of an SA account in SQL 2005 in a specific database. The reason of doing this procedure is since we are deploying a package software to our client(s) we want to secure our own database to get tampered by our client(s).
Is there a way to create and encrypted database file? What do people do when data security is important at the file level? Inother words, you don't want anyone to be able to take the database file (orfiles) and extract data from them.Ideally, I want a file the is absolutely encrypted on disk and that isdecrypted for data access. The problem, obviously, is that this would be avery costly (cpu time) approach as you couldn't create a decrypted image ondisk (this would expose the data). Are all database systems then, non-secure?Thanks,-Martin
i a the user of sql server 2005 on window server 2003. i want to knowthat how can i prevent my database from other user logins because allof them are sysadmin type.and i am also looking for database concurrency control methods.if any one know about this plz mail me answer on this mail idJoin Bytes!thanx in advance
Hi, does anyone have the name of the command-line utility that creates a security database on SQL Server 2005 with the corresponding tables (users, roles, applications)? I remember using it in an exercise some time ago and I can't find it anywhere.

I am using sdf database file for stroing improtant data. That file is password protected. But I want to apply some more security constraintson on it. May I know What are the possible ways to secure my data? How I use encrypt feature? so that if anyone open sdf file he cant see actual data into it.
