Security Required To Run Deployment Utility

May 18, 2007

I would like to have my developers responsible for deploying their SSIS packages to the Test/QA environment. I tried granting access to several of the stored procedures in msdb and the sysdtspackages90 table. The only thing that seems to work is granting sysadmin priviliges. Is there a server or database role that will grant the appropriate access? thanks

Deployment Utility Error

Dec 19, 2005

I am getting the following error when trying to run a deployment
utility. The server only has .net framework 2.0 and sql server 2005
(rtm) installed.

If it's any help, this server was recently upgraded from the june ctp to rtm.

This is a production server, so a solution involving as little disturbance to it's current state would be preferrable.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Deployment 'utility' Script Using Sqlcmd

Jun 15, 2006

Hi all,

I'm looking at creating a sample utility script that will invoking
scripts to deploy some SQL code. For example, a utlity script that will
run a SQL script, and on successful completion, execute the next script.

Having not used SQLCMD at all before, and being very new to SQL2005
(< 1 month) please guide me if there is a better way of invoking
this... For example, a way of avoiding the xp_cmdshell invocation!

The following code invokes a script, but I'm trying to find a way of
getting a return code back from sqlcmd, so I can progress and do the
next, or fail if the return code <> 0 (success).

Deployment Utility Or Import Package?

Jul 9, 2007

In reference to the question raised in this thread
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1460591&SiteID=1

Since I'm not able to create a deployment utility, when a config file is shared among multiple packages and also I cannot get the permission from Sys Admins to use Env. Variables I'm struck.

Now I'm thinking of importing the package to Sql Server from the file system. Is there any caveats in this approach? especially regarding the config files?

[edit]
Also, do I need any special permissions to view the Integeration Services node in Management Studio? We are using Integerated Authentication, neither do I'm able to run sp_start_job sp in the msdb database.
[/edit]

Thanks

How To Use Deployment Utility Using A Single Package Configuration File

Jan 22, 2007

Hi,

We are trying to create a deployment utility for a solution. The issue we are facing is, we are using a single package configuration file and when we try to build the solution to create the deployment utility, the build process fails saying that the package configuration file already exists. THe reason for this is while trying to build, the utility copies the configation fiel for the packages, it copies for one, but for the second onward, when it tries to copies, it fails saying the file already exists.

Any idea how to overcome this, or else any suggestions how to perform the similar steps to create a deployment utility for a solution in which the packages share a single package configuration file.

Any suggestion would be really appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,

Manish Singh

SSIS Deployment Utility - Manifest Doesnt Show Up

Nov 19, 2007

When I create a deployment utility I...
- set AllowConfigurationChanges to True.
- set CreateDeploymentUtility to True
- DeploymentOutputPath is set to binDeployment
- I click 'Build' and it creates the binDeployment directory and writes all my DTSX files and my dtsConfig file
But it doesn't create a manifest file. Why not?

SSIS Deployment Utility - Package Configurations Doesnt Show Up??

Jan 24, 2007

Hi:

After moving my deployment folder to the Target Server, I run the Installation Wizard. As I move next, I am missing the window which is supposed to allow me to set package config values as stated in MSDN:

"If the package includes configurations, you can edit updatable configurations by updating values in the Value list on the Configure Packages page."

Source: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms141802.aspx

Does anyone know why I am not seeing it? In my deployment bundle which I have moved over has currently 3 files:

1) SSIS Deployment Manifest

2) SSIS Package

3) SSIS Config File

Again, I double click on SSIS Deployment Manifest, and it starts fine. I go thru the steps for File System Deployment, and then it prompts for installation folder path. After that, it takes me directly to validation. Why is it not showing me the Configure Packages Page as described in the MSDN Documentation. Please advise. Thanks.

Unable To Create A SSIS Deployment Utility For A Solution Which Are Having 2 Packages

Dec 28, 2007

Hi All,

I have created a solution which contains only 2 packages say Package1.dtsx and Pakage2.dtsx. I want to create a deployment utility to deploy onto other developers machince. I changed the project properties "CreateDeploymentUtility" to TRUE. When I do the build it is not creating the files in "Deployment" folder. It is saying Rebuild All Failed but the error is not showing.

For more information the 2 packages have 4 indirect configurations from environment variables which are storing the actual config file path.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks.
Venkat.

VS Deployment Security

Jul 24, 2007

I have a report project I have deployed onto a remote Reporting Services server several times smoothly and easily. Recently I logged into the site in IE to test the reports using a username and password with MUCH lower security than my own. Since then I cannot deploy reports. I get a message that "The permissions granted to 'domainLoser' are insufficient for performing this operation." This is as it should be. Loser should NOT be able to deploy reports. The problem is I can't get it back to being me, the admin. I have reported, opened the reports in IE using my own login, reopened VS2005, tried setting IE to require authentication to force a login again, and then rebooted again.

Does anyone have a suggestion about how to correct this? Had I known I would NEVER had tested this on the same PC I was deploying from. I seem forever stuck as Loser now.

Thanks for any suggestions or questions for clarification. Eva

DTS & Security: Permissions Required To Launch Package

Jan 9, 2001

I have prepared several DTS packages which must be launched by a custom external application. What is the best way to provide access to this application? What are the minimum security requirements? Currently, they are local packages; I understand that some utility is offered by saving them as .DTS files, but I don't know the pros & cons. Are there advantages to using the Repository? The app should be able to do its work from a different box on the same network as the server. (Ultra-super-secret security isn't an issue, but I don't want to have give our developers sa-level access unless necessary.)

Row-level Security: Permissions Required On Base Table?

Jun 2, 2007

I'm implementing row-level security in a SQL Server database that uses Microsoft Access for the front end. I'm using a UDF (a view behaves the same way) to restrict access to specific rows of a base table based on membership in a role. According to the reading I've done, if the base table has DENY ALL permissions for the role, and the UDF has GRANT ALL, members of the role should be able to update records in the base table via the UDF, without having direct access to the base table. However, I find that unless I grant appropriate permissions on the base table, the user is unable to update the table via the UDF.

Is this expected behavior? Nothing I've read suggests I should have to grant permissions on the columns of the base table.

Any Good Whitepapers On Security/deployment For Entire SQL Server BI Solutions?

Aug 1, 2007

At my current employer we are struggling with the best way to manage security and deployment of a project that contains databases, SSIS, SSAS and SSRS components, using configurations.

Environment (Dev):
3 SQL Server databases, all using mixed-mode security, using SQL Server security credentials.
12 SSIS packages; one master package, eleven child packages, 3 shared data sources
1 SSAS database; one cube, 15 dimensions, three referenced data sources from the SSIS project (in same solution)
6 SSRS reports, one data source to cube (not shared- doesn't appear SSRS can share datasources among other projects in the solution? Why?)

Everything runs fine in development. Now comes the tricky part.

Deploying SSIS and SSAS into production environments:

-Packages use XML config files for connection strings to three relational data sources.
-Deploy to SQL Server storage. Deploy wizard copies package dependencies (including XML config files) to default location set in INI file. When I do this, no config file shows up in remote server (remote server not set up identical to local, so directory does not exist. Need UNC path?) So, being a developer with no "special" permissions on the PROD server, what security permissions is allowing the deployment wizard from copying files to this location on a production server?
-Using a deploy script using dtutil doesn't copy the SSIS dependencies. Is this matter of using COPY or XCOPY to copy the configuration files to the dependency location? Again, in real-world practice, do developers typically change this location in the INI file to another location, or stick with the default. In either case, how does security work that allows files to get copied to the remote folder? (i.e. manual, or SQL Server manages this file folder permission through some other magic)
When using SSMS and running the package after being deployed on the remote server, if the config path is the default (e.g. C:program filesMicrosoft SQL Server90DTSPackages...) it appears to be read from the local machines directory rather than the remote machines directory path (do I need to use UNC paths? The wizard doesn't give this option it seems)
-When scheduling the job from SQL Agent, does the proxy account need permissions to the folder the config files sit in?
-What about the roles security on the packages themselves? Where does the server roles come into play (dtsltuser, dtsadmin)
-Because the SSAS project uses connection references to the SSIS project in BIDS, and SSIS project uses configurations, will SSAS pick up on these connections?
-What about impersonation levels for SSAS? Leave all data sources set to default, and set the database impersonation level to "UseServiceAccount"? What if the developer is not the same as the OLAP administrator on the production server? In this case, Use Service Account isn't an option, and neither is the current users credentials.
-SSAS database also has security for Full Control, but still doesn't prevent security at the data source level within the database (talking about impersonation level, not source db credentials)
-How can SSRS connections leverage other shared connections?

As you can see, there are a ton of security considerations, none of which are intuitive and can be configured multiple ways and actually work (and a ton of ways that won't work).

I need a simple cheat-sheet about each step to take to configure this so multiple developers can work without interruption, hot-deploying SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS changes into different environments (QA, PROD).

SSRS -- Security Filter And Model Item Security Setting

Jul 31, 2007

Hi,

I have posted this issue for a week, haven't got any reply yet, I posted it again and desperately need your help.

The article http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365343.aspx says:
Model Item Security can be set for differnt security filters, but when I use SQL Server Management Studio to set Model Item Security, it seems "Permissions" property surpass "Model Item Security" property. -- My report server is using Custom Authentication.

For example, in "Permissions" property of the model, if I checked "Use these roles for each group or user account" without setting any user or group, no matter what users I added to "Model Item Security" with "Secure individual model items independently for this model" checked, NO one user can see the model on report manager and report builder;

in above situation, if I added "user1" and gave role such as "Browser" role to "user1" in "Permissions" property, if I checked "Secure individual model items independently for this model" in "Model Item Security" property, even I did NOT grant "user1" to root model and any entities under the model, the "user1" is able to access the model and all entities in report builder.

My question is on the same report model, how to set "AdminFilter" (empty security filter) for administrator permissions and set "GeneralFilter" (filtered on UserID) for general user based on their UserID?

The article also says:

"Security filters are always applied, even for users who have Content Manager or Administrator permissions to the model. To allow administrators or other users to see all rows of an entity on which row-level security is defined, you can create an empty security filter (which always returns True) and then use the filter to grant those users access to all the rows."

So I defined 2 filters "GeneralFilter" and "AdminFilter" for "Staff" entity for my report model "SSRSModel", I expect after I deployed the report model, the administrator users use report builder to build reports with all rows available, and the non-admin users can only see rows based on their UserID.

I can only get one result at a time but not both:

either the rows are filtered or not filtered at all, no matter how I set the "SecurityFilter" for the entity: I tried setting both "AdminFilter" and "GeneralFilter" for SecurityFilter at the same time, combination of "DefaultSecurityFilter" and "SecurityFilter", or one at a time.

Your help is highly appreciated!

Setup Of Security / Integrated Win Security On Vista

Jul 6, 2007

I have Sql Server Express installed on Vista (service pack 2)

I have Visual Studio 2005 with an application that I'm trying to access it with within a WCF service.

The login ID of the service is added to the database.

The database has remote access turned on.

The ID is granted access to all databases within the server.

The thread is being set with WindowsProvider and the services set their thread to WindowsProvider.

The dataserver is set with using Windows Authentication for security.

When I open my connection to the database, though, it reports the typically useless message that the connection is not allowed and that the server may not allow remote connections.

How to I get past this? I've done everything right.

BCP Utility .

Aug 6, 2002

Hello ,

I want to know how can i can use the bcp coomand to import a text file into a SQL database table . The text file contains info. like servername , date , time , logininfo and description .

The problem is i cannot import that file into the table through data import wizard . The wizard is not able to separate the fields properly and the import takes place with mixed up data in different columns . The separator in the text file is colon . I even tried fixed length with manual column separation .
The text in the text file are not aligned properly as these are log files generated by the system which i am trying to import in a table .

So how can use the bcp command to specify the column length properly and seperate the fields uniformly so that the data gets imported neatly .

Any thoughts how could the command look like ?

Thank you very much .
Anita.
