Select Just The Columns That Haven't NULL Rows

Nov 2, 2006

Hi,

I need to build a query that just includes certain columns if they haven't NULL row values.

For example:

SELECT NAME_COLUMN IF not NULL, SELECT GENDER_COLUMN if not NULL, otherwise won't select these 2 columns i used as example.

Any help, will be greatly appreciated,

Best regards,
Teixeira

SELECT With NULL Values In One Or More Of Selected Columns

Apr 10, 2008

Hello everyone,

I have a little problem here. I need to select data from multiple columns and multiple tables, some of those columns can have NULL value. I have tried few things, and havent find the right way so far. Problem that i am incountering is that when i run SELECT statment as it is right now, i dont get back results which match search parameters but have NULL value in one or more column in select statment. How can i fix this problem?

SELECT Person2role.person2roleID,Person.firstname, Person.lastname, Person.sex

FROM Person LEFT OUTER JOIN

Person2Role ON Person.personID = Person2Role.personID

WHERE (Person.firstname LIKE '%' + ISNULL(@firstname + '%', ''))

AND (Person.lastname LIKE '%' + ISNULL(@lastname + '%', ''))

AND (Person.sex = ISNULL(@sex, Person.sex))

This is a part of SELECT statment..just so you can get the idea of what i am doing..i have few more parameters

I am working with SQL Server 2005 Express Version

Thank you,

Alex

Select Rows From Database Where Fields Are Null

Dec 30, 2006

Hi, how do i do a select statement with asp.net to return a record if a field is null.  I have the following code:
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM Categories WHERE ParentId = @ParentId", cn);.Parameters.Add("@ParentId", SqlDbType.Int).Value = parentId != null ? (object) parentId : DBNull.Value;cn.Open();
The variable parentId is a nullable int.  However when i pass in a null value it doesn't return anything even though there are records in the database that have a null value for the ParentId field.
Appreciate if someone could tell me what i am doing wrong.  Thanks

Won't Select Rows With Null Field Values

Aug 29, 2006

I cannot in the life of me understand what goes wrong here... In a webapplication (C#.NET) I traced an inability to retrieve existing records to SQL Server, where I cannot do the same either. The problem is that in the parameterized query, some fields can be null, and thus when the corresponding fields in the database record are null also, they should be selected. But this won't happen for some reason.

I wrote a test SQL statement that gives me the same bogus:

DECLARE @institution int, @collection int, @serialnr int, @subnr nvarchar(50)SET @institution = 1 SET @collection = 1SET @serialnr = 240 SET @subnr = NULLSELECT ID, Institution, Collection, SerialNumber, SubNumber, AccessionYear, Sagsnummer, DanekraeNr, TaxonIdentified, Stratigraphy, TypeStatus, PlacementRoom, PlacementCabinet, PlacementDrawer, UnitNotesFROM SpecimensWHERE (Institution = @institution) AND (Collection = @collection) AND (SerialNumber = @serialnr) AND (SubNumber = @subnr)
Now there is at least one row with corresponding fields values (1, 1, 240, null), but it won't be selected! What is wrong!?

Select Unique Rows For All Columns

May 17, 2007

Using DISTINCT with SELECT have effect only for one column.
But when is needed to select (or to count) queries for all rows for all columns in a table without duplicates, doesn't work.

Select DISTINCT a1,a2,a3,a4 From Y ---> results 167 rows
Select DISTINCT a4 From Y ---> " 85 rows

Any thoughts?

I have a flat file with the following columns

SampleID   Rep_Number   Product  Protein   Fat   Solids

In the flat file SampleID and Product are populated in the first row only, rest of the rows only have values for Rep_Number, Protein, Fat, Solids.

SampleID and Product are blank for the rest of the rows. So my task is to fill those blank rows with the first row that has the sampleID and Product and load into the table.

Select DISTINCT On Multiple Columns Is Not Returning Distinct Rows?

Jul 6, 2007

Hi, I have the following script segment which is failing:

CREATE TABLE #LatLong (Latitude DECIMAL, Longitude DECIMAL, PRIMARY KEY (Latitude, Longitude))

INSERT INTO #LatLong SELECT DISTINCT Latitude, Longitude FROM RGCcache

When I run it I get the following error: "Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK__#LatLong__________7CE3D9D4'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.#LatLong'."

Im not sure how this is failing as when I try creating another table with 2 decimal columns and repeated values, select distinct only returns distinct pairs of values.

The failure may be related to the fact that RGCcache has about 10 million rows, but I can't see why.

Any ideas?

Arranging Data On Multiple Rows Into A Sigle Row (converting Rows Into Columns)

Dec 25, 2005

Hello,
I have a survey (30 questions) application in a SQL server db. The application uses several relational tables. The results are arranged so that each answer is on a seperate row:
user1   answer1user1   answer2user1   answer3user2   answer1user2   answer2user2   answer3
For statistical analysis I need to transfer the results to an Excel spreadsheet (for later use in SPSS). In the spreadsheet I need the results to appear so that each user will be on a single row with all of that user's answers on that single row (A column for each answer):
user1   answer1   answer2   answer3user2   answer1   answer2   answer3
How can this be done? How can all answers of a user appear on a single row
Thanx,Danny.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Rows Into Columns - Remove Duplicates And Variable Rows

row_number() over (partition by act_reference order by act_reference) as rowno,
t3.s_initials "Initials"

order by act_reference

[code]...

But what I would love to do next is take each of the above rows - and return the initials either in one column with all the nulls and duplicate values removed, separated by a comma ..

ref, initials
Ag-4xYS
Ag-6xYS,BL
Ap-1xKW
At-2x SAS,CW
At-3x SAS,CW

OR the above but using variable number of columns based on the maximum number of different initials for each row.this is not strictly required, but maybe neater for further work on the view

ref, init1,init2
Ag-4xYS
Ag-6xYS,BL
Ap-1xKW
At-2x SAS,CW

Turn Columns Into Rows And Rows Into Columns

Jan 24, 2008

I have a report which is a list of items and I display everything about the item. It is great. My report table in the layout tab is simple. Header,Detail,Footer. Each Item has 65 columns. The number of items (rows) vary upon what you want to see. Example data.
Item#, Description, CaseSalePrice, Cost, BottleSalePrice, Discount
123, Grenadine, 100.00, 75.00, 15.50, 2.00
456, Lime Juice, 120.00, 81.00, 17.25, 2.00

There could be 1 item or 4000 items.

What I want to see is.

Item # - 123, 456
Description - Grenadine, Lime Juice
CaseSalePrice - 100.00, 120.00
Cost - 75.00, 81.00
BottleSalePrice - 15.50, 17.25
Discount - 2.00, 2.00

What I am actually doing is running this the top example and saving to excel. Then copying the sheet. Creating a new sheet then doing a paste special transpose and this gives the users what they want to see.

I want to grab that table object in the report layout tab and twist it 90degrees so the header is on the left, detail is in the middle and the footer is on the right. It would be perfect.

The dynamic column need is really the problem here. I never know how many items will be in the report. They all have the same basic information like description and pricing.

I am all out of creative ideas, any help would be appreciated.

Compressing Multiple Rows With Null Values To One Row With Out Null Values After A Pivot Transform

Jan 25, 2008

I have a pivot transform that pivots a batch type. After the pivot, each batch type has its own row with null values for the other batch types that were pivoted. I want to group two fields and max() the remaining batch types so that the multiple rows are displayed on one row. I tried using the aggregate transform, but since the batch type field is a string, the max() function fails in the package. Is there another transform or can I use the aggragate transform another way so that the max() will work on a string?

Transact SQL :: Select And Parse Json Data From 2 Columns Into Multiple Columns In A Table?

Apr 29, 2015

I have a business need to create a report by query data from a MS SQL 2008 database and display the result to the users on a web page. The report initially has 6 columns of data and 2 out of 6 have JSON data so the users request to have those 2 JSON columns parse into 15 additional columns (first JSON column has 8 key/value pairs and the second JSON column has 7 key/value pairs). Here what I have done so far:

I found a table value function (fnSplitJson2) from this link [URL]. Using this function I can parse a column of JSON data into a table. So when I use the function above against the first column (with JSON data) in my query (with CROSS APPLY) I got the right data back the but I got 8 additional rows of each of the row in my table. The reason for this side effect is because the function returned a table of 8 row (8 key/value pairs) for each json string data that it parsed.

1. First question: How do I modify my current query (see below) so that for each row in my table i got back one row with 19 columns.

SELECT A.ITEM1,A.ITEM2,A.ITEM3,A.ITEM4, B.*
FROM PRODUCT A
CROSS APPLY fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM5,NULL) B

If updated my query (see below) and call the function twice within the CROSS APPLY clause I got this error: "The multi-part identifier "A.ITEM6" could be be bound.

2. My second question: How to i get around this error?

SELECT A.ITEM1,A.ITEM2,A.ITEM3,A.ITEM4, B.*, C.*
FROM PRODUCT A
CROSS APPLY fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM5,NULL) B,  fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM6,NULL) C

I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 version. Windows 7 desktop.

Counting NULL Columns?

May 14, 2004

If I had a basic table with 3 VARCHAR fields; let's say A, B, C

How could I write a query that returns the count of the number of NULL columns for every record in a table?

Ideally, it would be something like:

SELECT
CAST (A IS NULL) AS INTEGER
+ CAST (B IS NULL) AS INTEGER
+ CAST (C IS NULL) AS INTEGER
FROM MyTable

That doesn't work at all. I can't seem to do "IS NULL" in the SELECT area. Should I write a T-SQL user-defined function that takes all three columns as parameters? Would that be performance friendly for large data sets?

Storage Of Null Columns

May 23, 2007

Hi,

This question comes without the wish for any philosofical debates concerning NULL

Normally SQL Server 2005 uses 13 bytes to store a NUMERIC(22,7) value. Does it use the full 13 bytes when the column contains NULL as well? And what about DATETIME and (BIG)INT? Most of the info on storage of NULL values is about varchar/char/nvarchar/varchar...

Null Rows In Excel

Nov 17, 2007

Hi,

I have to import data from Excel to SQL Server using SSIS. My fields in sql don't take null values however for some reason i don't understand I see that the SSIS is also trying to import null rows into the database. For example I have the following excel file:
Name Postcode State
XXX 123 ON
YXX 345 IO

The rows following the last line are all blank but when I preview the Excel Source data flow task it returns the empty rows as null and therfore, my package fails as db fields don't accept null values.

How can I prevent SSIS from taking null rows? Can I maybe write a query in SSIS to say only to take rows where postcode<>null ?

Thanks in advance for any help i get :-)
