Select Query Form Multiple Databases

Dec 14, 2007

How do I write an sql statement to link tables in two databases and query them? For example: SELECT db1.table1.field1, db2.table1.field1 FROM Table1 INNER JOIN db1.table1.field1 ON db2.table1.field1 = db1.table1.field1

How To Make The SSMSE To Return Whole Records Without Any Close Query Form And Re-create Query Form Operation?

Dec 25, 2007

Hi,
I got a problem.
I installed Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 version.
And I created a Compact database.
I created an connection in SSMSE to connect the database and opened a query form.
then, i run the following sql:

Select * from Table1

It returned 3 records to me.
After that, I used program to insert record into this table.
Then i ran this sql again, it still show me 3 records.
I closed the query form, and re-created a new query form, then run the sql, it returned 4 records to me.

Why? It's very strange and difficult to operate, right?
Is there anyone know how to make the SSMSE to return whole records without any close query form and re-create query form operation?

Thanks a lot!

And Merry X'max!!!

Price Of Using Multiple Databases In SELECT Statements

Sep 11, 2007

Hi,We are discussing possible implementation for sql2005 database(s). This database will serve one web portal. Part of data will get into it by hand, and part will be replicated from internal system. Some of us are for creating two separate databases, since there are two separate datasources. One, automatic, will change very little over time and requires almost no maintenance. Other datasource will be manual input. Tables and procedures related to this part will change over time. Some of us are for creating single database, since it will serve one web site. More important this group is concerned about performance issues since almost every select will require join between tables that would be stored in two separate databases. Do these issues exist? Can you share some insights, comments, links about this?

How Do I Write SQL Query Accessing Multiple Databases (DBFs)?

Aug 8, 2006

I have several database files, all in the same directory. I want to write SQL statements that access two databases at once. For example, if only one database would be involved, I would write:

SELECT     Test_Source_ID_column, Data_column
INTO            Test_Destination_table
FROM         Test_Sources_table
The above query copies two columns (Test_Source_ID_column and Data_column) from Test_Sources_table into a brand new table called Test_Destination_table.
Now the above query is fine for both the old and new tables being in the same database. But what if Test_Sources_table is in file Old.dbf and I want the new table Test_Destination_table to be in New.dbf?
Both Old.dbf and New.dbf are in the same directory. Therefore, there is no security issue about using ......etcpasswords. I should therefore be able to use relative paths. So, I also want to know how I can do that select on two databases in the same directory without typing long, long paths.
Is there a way to do queries that access multiple database files (all database files being in the exact same directory) AND use relative paths or no paths (and certainly not type a full path)?
NOTE 1: I'm using SQLEXPRESS, therefore do not have the SQL Server 2005 tools. I have Visual Studio 2005 Developer Edition with its tools.
NOTE 2: One table is accessed through ODBC. The other table is accessed through SQLEXPRESS.

Need Help W/ Postback To 'Customers' Table On Form Using Select Query From 'Parameters' Table

Dec 20, 2007

I have set up a 'Parameters' table that solely stores all pre-assigned selection values for a webform. I customized a stored query to Select the values from the Parameters table. I set up the webform. The result is that the form1.apsx automatically populates each DropDownList task with the pre-assigned values from the 'Parameters' table (for example, the stored values in the 'Parameters' table 'Home', 'Business', and 'Other'  populate the drop down list for 'Type').
The programming to move the selected data from form1.aspx to a new table in the SQL database perplexes me. If possible, I would like to use the form1.aspx to Postback (or Insert) the "selected" data to a *new* column in a *new* table (such as writing the data to the 'CustomerType' column in the 'Customers' table; I clearly do not want to write back to the 'Parameters' table). Any help to get over this hurdle would be deeply appreciated.

Multiple CTE In One SELECT Statement Query

May 8, 2014

I am trying to apply the logic from the following resource: URL....but cannot get it to work with my logic for some reason. For example, the following query:

;WITH CTE1 AS (SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR, GETDATE(), 120) AS Col1),
CTE2 AS (SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR, GETDATE(), 111) AS Col2)
SELECT CTE1.Col1,CTE2.Col2
FROM CTE1
CROSS JOIN CTE2
GO

Produces the following output:

Col1 | Col2
2014-05-08 10:55:54 | 2014/05/08

But, as soon as I try to do something else like:

;WITH CTE1 AS (SELECT COUNT(login) FROM userinfo AS Col1),
CTE2 AS (SELECT COUNT(login) FROM userinfo AS Col2)
SELECT CTE1.Col1,CTE2.Col2
FROM CTE1
CROSS JOIN CTE2
GO

I receive the following errors:

Msg 8155, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
No column name was specified for column 1 of 'CTE1'.
Msg 8155, Level 16, State 2, Line 2
No column name was specified for column 1 of 'CTE2'.

Are there limitations when trying to use multiple CTE in a single query?

or
(2) SELECT * FROM [User]
WHERE username = 'whatever'
and then in my code check that the record returned matched the password?

Select Query With Multiple Row Coalesce Subquery

Apr 30, 2008

Hey guys, I have a brain buster for you today:

I have a query where I need to select a bunch of rows from one table, hypothetically we'll call them ssn, first name, last name, and I need to select a subquery which coalesces a bunch of rows together (in no case will there be only one row returned from that subquery).

Anyone know how I could go about this? I'll give you an example of what I've tried, but it does not work currently.

delcare @path varchar(255)
select e.ssn,

e.firstname,
e.lastname,
( @path = select coalesce(@path + ', ', '')
from space s1 inner join space s2

on s1.lft BETWEEN s2.lft AND s2.rgt and s1.rgt BETWEEN s2.lft AND s2.rgt
where s1.spaceID = 133225
select @path)
from employees e
where e.id = 5

Using that spaceID is guaranteed to give me four rows, and I need them coalesced together, but I can't just use a function (too slow on the scale it would be used), any thoughts?

Spreading SELECT Query Results Over Multiple Pages

Dec 20, 2006

Hello.Lets say that there is a table with N rows. now, i want to display the table's data on a web page. one way is to select the whole table and add each row's data to the webpage (something like SELECT * FROM TABLE1).going this way will create a huge page. i want to speared the results over multiple pages - excatly as this forum spread each forum messages over multiple pages.
for this purpose, i need to query Y rows each time, for example, if my table has 20 rows, and say that i want that each page will display 5 rows, then i need to query 5 rows each time. the first 5 rows for the first page, the next 5 rows for the second page and so on...
is there any way to achieve it using an SQL query?
the simplest way is to select the whole table and manaually filter the results. but this way will become slow as the table grows with data... and i dont want to select rows which i wont display anyway.
any suggestions?
Thanks.

This is an exact matching record and straight forward

Is it possible to identify the record using T SQL query based on the following scenarios

1) return the record - If all the three where conditions match
2) if record not found check and return the record where 2 columns values in the where condition match

-- Expected Result for below query: 'Orange', because 2 of the columns in where condition have matching values

How should I go about doing this? Should I create a temporary table to hold the begin / end dates to use in the sub Views? Or something else? I am at a lost on how to go about this and need some direction and syntax?

HELP With SQL Query: Select Multiple Values From One Column Based On &&<= Condition.

Aug 7, 2007

Hello all. I hope someone can offer me some help. I'm trying to construct a SQL statement that will be run on a Dataset that I have. The trick is that there are many conditions that can apply. I'll describe my situation:

I have about 1700 records in a datatable titled "AISC_Shapes_Table" with 49 columns. What I would like to do is allow the user of my VB application to 'create' a custom query (i.e. advanced search). For now, I'll just discuss two columns; The Section Label titled "AISC_MANUAL_LABEL" and the Weight column "W". The data appears in the following manner:

(AISC_Shapes_Table)

AISC_MANUAL_LABEL W
W44x300 300
W42x200 200
(and so on)
WT22x150 150
WT21x100 100

(and so on)
MT12.5x12.4 12.4
MT12x10 10
(etc.)

I have a listbox which users can select MULTIPLE "Manual Labels" or shapes. They then select a property (W for weight, in this case) and a limitation (greater than a value, less than a value, or between two values). From all this, I create a custom Query string or filter to apply to my BindingSource.Filter method. However I have to use the % wildcard to deal with exceptions. If the user only wants W shapes, I use "...LIKE 'W%'" and "...NOT LIKE 'WT%" to be sure to select ONLY W shapes and no WT's. The problems arises, however, when the user wants multiple shapes in general. If I want to select all the "AISC_MANUAL_LABEL" values with W <= 40, I can't do it. An example of a statement I tried to use to select WT% Labels and MT% labels with weight (W)<=100 is:

Code SnippetSELECT AISC_MANUAL_LABEL, W
FROM AISC_Shape_Table
WHERE (W <= 100) AND ((AISC_MANUAL_LABEL LIKE 'MT%') AND (AISC_MANUAL_LABEL LIKE 'WT%'))

It returns a NULL value to me, which i know is NOT because no such values exist. So, I further investigated and tried to use a subquery seeing if IN, ANY, or ALL would work, but to no avail. Can anyone offer up any suggestions? I know that if I can get an example of ONE of them to work, then I'll easily be able to apply it to all of my cases. Otherwise, am I just going about this the hard way or is it even possible? Please, ANY suggestions will help. Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Steve G.

Query To Select Multiple Tables In Dataset Through ODBC Connection

Apr 10, 2007

Hi there,

I have a MS Access database (mdb) containing the following tables:

Crime

Criminal

CrimeCommitted

Hideout

CriminalType

The Criminal table contains information about each criminal and the CrimeCommitted table contains information about the specific crimes. I've written the following query to return only the latest crime committed by each criminal:

Code Snippet

SELECT Criminal.CriminalID, Criminal.Firstname, Criminal.Lastname, Criminal.Nickname, Criminal.Gender, Criminal.DOB, Criminal.Eyes, Criminal.Complexion, Criminal.Weight, Criminal.Height, Criminal.Build, Criminal.Scars, Criminal.Occupation, Criminal.CrimeOrgID, Criminal.IQ, Criminal.Hideout, Criminal.CriminalType, Max(CrimeComitted.Date) AS Last_Crime_Comitted
FROM Criminal INNER JOIN CrimeComitted ON Criminal.CriminalID=CrimeComitted.CriminalID
GROUP BY Criminal.CriminalID, Criminal.Firstname, Criminal.Lastname, Criminal.Nickname, Criminal.Gender, Criminal.DOB, Criminal.Eyes, Criminal.Complexion, Criminal.Weight, Criminal.Height, Criminal.Build, Criminal.Scars, Criminal.Occupation, Criminal.CrimeOrgID, Criminal.IQ, Criminal.Hideout, Criminal.CriminalType;

This query works fine for obtaining the Criminal table data, but once i've include CrimeCommitted.Country in the SELECT statement, the data returned contained all the crimes committed by each criminal (i just need the latest crime).

The query doesn't work when another table, other than Criminal, is selected. How can i obtain the columns in the CrimeCommitted table in this query?

Creating A Database From Multiple Databases Accross Multiple Servers

Sep 13, 2007

Hi,

I'm trying to create a database that takes specific information from a number of databases on different servers to make some reporting that we have much easier.

I'm pretty new to SQL so I'm not sure of the best way to proceed. I read an article that suggested I use the OPENROWSET command. The problem is, the version of SQL that came with one of the programmes we use is limited and will not allow you to turn on the allow "Ad Hoc distributed Queries" so the SLQ statement will not execute.

I'm confused why it won't let me to connect through ODBC as I've created a web page that selects data from this database with no problems!

Here is the SQL statement that I've written to make sure it is the correct one (on the msdn library page it said that this was the ODBC connection):

SELECT a.*
FROM OPENROWSET('MSDASQL','DRIVER=(SQL Server);SERVER=APPOLOACT7;UID=sa;PWD=***************',
'SELECT * FROM MDCTestAndDev.dbo.TBL_CONTACT') AS a

I've also created the ODBC connection using the tool on Administration Tools>Data Sources ODBC

Any help would be greatly appreciated (also any ways of selecting from one database and inserting it into another will be helpfull)

Thanks

Merging Data From Multiple Databases With Multiple Tables (all With The Same Structure)

Nov 15, 2006

Hi!

I have 7 source databases and one target database, all using the same structure. The structure is made of 10 tables, with foreign key constraints.

I need to merge the source databases into the target (which won't have any data before that process, but will already have the correct schema), and to keep the relationships between the records.

I know how to iterate over the source databases (with SMO foreach), but I'd like to know if someone can advise the best copy method for that context in SSIS ? (I don't want to keep the primary keys, but I need to keep the relationships...)

Any pointer most welcome!

best regards and thanks

Two Select Statements In SP Return No Value In Web Form (only)

Mar 29, 2008

Hello. I  a SP with 2 select statements. If the first returns no results it does the second select. This works fine if I test it on the sql server. But when I try it in a webform using a sqldatasource it only returns a result if the first Select returns rows. If not It is an empty set (where I know it should not be. It returned resultrs on the SQL server). This is the code:1 ALTER PROCEDURE [SPName]
2
3 @SearchFor varchar(150) -- search string to compare with
4
5 AS
6
7 SELECT p.UserName,
8
9 (Select ImageName from ProfileImages Where IsMainImage = 1 And ProfileID = p.ProfileID) as ImageName,
10
11 (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM auditions WHERE UserID = p.ProfileID) AS AuditionCount
12

26
27 FROM profiles p WHERE SOUNDEX(p.UserName) = SOUNDEX( @SearchFor )
28
29 ORDER BY Similarity
30
31 END
32
33 RETURN
Now If i change the SP to test it to the code below, it does work in  both the webform and on the sql server: 1 ALTER PROCEDURE [SPName]
2
3 @SearchFor varchar(150) -- search string to compare with
4
5 AS
6
7 DECLARE @RowCount int
8 SET @RowCount = 0
9
10 IF (@ROWCOUNT = 0)
11
12 Begin
13
14 SELECT p.UserName,
15
16 (Select ImageName from ProfileImages Where IsMainImage = 1 And ProfileID = p.ProfileID) as ImageName,
17
18 (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM auditions WHERE UserID = p.ProfileID) AS AuditionCount,
19
20 DIFFERENCE(p.UserName, @SearchFor) as Similarity
21
22 FROM profiles p WHERE SOUNDEX(p.UserName) = SOUNDEX( @SearchFor )
23
24 ORDER BY Similarity
25
26 END
27
28 RETURNOnce again, Everything works as it should (for both versions), if I am testing it directly on the SQL server. Can anyone Help me on this? I am stumped and cannot find any answers about this.

How To Form SQL Select Queries Using Drop Down Lists??

Nov 8, 2006

Hi
Will somebody please explain how  to combine asp.net dropdown lists to write
a  SQL database select query. I am using VWdeveloper and C Sharp.
For example, say I have  3 dropdownlists on my  webpage  as below,
List 1, Cities, London, Rome,  Barcelona etc
List 2, Restaurants by  Type, Italian, chinese, Indian etc
List 3, Number of tables/ seats 10-20,  20- 40, 50  -100
I want someone to be able to  search for a restaurant by selecting  an  item from  each dropdownlist
such as, "Barcelona" "Italian" "50-100"
This search query would return all the Italian restaurants in Barcelona with  50-100  tables/seats.
I  would also like the select query to work even if one of the dropdownlists items  is not selected.
Hope  somebody can clear this up?
Also would sql injection attacks be a threat by doing it this way?
Thanks all
