Selecting Multi-value Report Parameters From Dropdown
Jan 10, 2007
Hello,
I have a report with a multi-value parameter. In its' drop drop box, I can select ALL or I can individually select single items, but it doesn't appear that I can select a range of items using the shift key. The problem is; occasionally the user will want to select everything, and them eliminate an item or two. The list it too long to select every one individually. It would be an easy solution if hey could select the entire list, then deselect what they don't want. Is there a way?
Thanks.

DATETIME,
@EndDate
[Code] ....
And for prompts how to create created_by and message_type dropdowns as shown in picture.

I am trying to use a Multi-Value Report Parameter to determine Visibility, I found this to work great when I only had 2 values (0 or 1), but I have 5 now (0, 1, 2, 3, 4).
I can see what is happening, but I don't know how to write the Visibility Expression to get it to work for all conditions. I can clearly see that when more than one option is selected from the drop down box the Report Parameter goes from Parameters!ReportSelect.Value(0) to
Parameters!ReportSelect.Value(0)
Parameters!ReportSelect.Value(1)
Parameters!ReportSelect.Value(2)
Parameters!ReportSelect.Value(3)
Parameters!ReportSelect.Value(4)
one for each number of variables selected. I need to evaluate for all possible values and if any of them are the one selected I want it to be visable.
Currently I am using this expression on Visability:
=IIf(Parameters!ReportSelect.Value(0)= 1, FALSE, TRUE)
But this only works if the "=1" is the 1st one selected.
I need it to work for all 4 options, so that all selected will be visible.
Does this make sense?

Can someone please explain how i would define a multi-valued default parameter within the report Properties -> Parameters. I have an OLAP based report with multi-value parameters. I do not want to set the default values from within BIDS. Instead, I'd like to do this from the ReportServer (after report deployment). I have no problem when i enter a single value as a 'default value', for example:
ReportParm1 String [Deal Dim].[Shelf].&[AAM]
But, how would i define it with multiple values as a 'default value' ?, for example:
ReportParm1 String [Deal Dim].[Shelf].&[ABC] , [Deal Dim].[Shelf].&[DEF]
NOTE: It appears that you cannot use expressions, such as the 'split' function in the 'default value' space.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you.

I downloaded the sample reports for report execution from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms161561.aspx
to display reporting services report execution data which worked fine until I'd written a report with multi-valued parameters. As soon as this was designed and more importantly run by an user the package used to create the reports crashed.
I've found out why it's breaking mainly through digging around in the script task where the package crashes and also through surfing the net and finding this
https://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=967081&SiteID=1
thread. I've tried their fix but it still crashes unfortunately.
It seems like the issue is populating an array indexes in the script component in the update parameters data flow task. I think this was written to deal with minimal parameter requests, however I've recently written a multi-valued parameter report and it's made the string containing the parameter details has now hit the maximum length for the string. Changing the WSTR 4000 to a different size doesn't seem to have an effect, and the forum entry above doesn't hint at what the problem is apart from the script not being able to deal with the length.
The error I now get is as follows:
at MyComponent1.ScriptMain.Input0_ProcessInputRow(Input0Buffer Row) in dts://Scripts/MyComponent1/ScriptMain:line 35
at MyComponent1.UserComponent.Input0_ProcessInput(Input0Buffer Buffer) in dts://Scripts/MyComponent1/ComponentWrapper:line 68
at MyComponent1.UserComponent.ProcessInput(Int32 InputID, PipelineBuffer Buffer) in dts://Scripts/MyComponent1/ComponentWrapper:line 25
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ScriptComponentHost.ProcessInput(Int32 inputID, PipelineBuffer buffer)
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Hello Everyone,
I am trying to expand the multi-valued parameter menu object so I can display the selection list in a more user-friendly format since the text is fairly long. If left at the default setting then I have to scroll to the right to see the complete string(s). For a single-select parameter I can just CAST the string to CHAR(100) and the menu object will expand. However, it seems that this approach is not working for multi-valued parameter menu objects.
Is this a bug in SSRS, and is there another way to accomplish this. Please let me know.
Thank You!!!

Hi,
I wonder if anyone ecountered (and successfully solved) the following problem:
I have a query-based multi-valued parameter (let's call it "A"). When query that populates the parameter returns only one value and that value is a long text, then it's almost impossible to select this value through the Report Manager UI. It's because the horizontal scrollbar covers the value.
For now I have found two workarounds to this problem:
1. Cut the lenght of the Parameter Label value (Instead of 'Large Power Transformer", I show "Large Power Tran...")
2. Make the label in the multi-value dropdown smaller by using custom style sheets for report manager. I added a "LABEL { font-size: 7pt; }" section to the Htmlviewer.css and modified the RSReportServer.config file to point to the Htmlviewer.css (for info on how to do this please see: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345247.aspx)
So far I am using the No 2. workaround. Any other suggestions on final solution to that matter would be highly appreciated.

I have a report that has 2 dropdowns, selecting from the first dropdown populates the second one. This works fine in the BI Studio.
When I deploy this report to the 'Report Manager' and make a selection from the first dropdown, the second dropdown loads (as expected). I tried to select from the second dropdown (which has only 1 item - which is correct), the dropdown does not appear correctly - as in, I can't see that item.
Since we can't attach anything here, below is the link to a screenshot of my issue:
http://docs.google.com/View?docid=ddd6j2xn_52c5qd5
If you look closely at the screenshot from the link above, you'll see that there is a value in the second dropdown - it just won't show completely - as if the dropdown is not rendering correctly. I can view source on the page and see that the dropdown has a value.
What appears to be happening is the if only 1 item is in the second dropdown and that item is longer than the size of the dropdown, the dropdown won't render.
Here is my value for the second dropdown '012 Candy Gadler David Thapero'. This is the only value in the second dropdown. - You can try 35 chars or more in the dropdown to confirm.
Notes:
+ No special chars are in either dropdown
+ I am using IE 7 (Also had someone test this on IE 6 - same problem)
+ Using Visual Studio 2005 to build report - where this works fine
Work around:
+ If I add another item to the dropdown via a UNION query, I see the original value + the new item in the dropdown #2
Please share your thoughts
Thanks,
h.

Our clients working with the Firefox browser on a Mac are unable to use the Multi-Value parameter drop down lists that the Report Viewer control generates. Of course I realize that the multi-select dropdown lists are not really dropdown option lists using the standard HTML select tag, but are rather tables within div tags with cells that contain spans, inputs, and labels.
Originally the report viewer displayed these lists in the wrong position within Firefox on any platform (Mac or PC). Furthermore, there were other visibility problems with those lists that made it virtually impossible to select a checkbox within the list. Fortunately, Microsoft fixed this problem with the latest version of Report Viewer, which we downloaded from the following link:
http://207.46.19.190/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cc96c246-61e5-4d9e-bb5f-416d75a1b9ef&displaylang=en
So currently we have SQL Reporting Services Report Viewer 9.0.21022.8 installed on our web server. And the dropdown lists do appear as expected, and they work properly in Firefox on a PC.
But, when the control is rendered in Firefox on a Mac, the list is not scrollable. The scroll bar that should appear on the right-hand side of the dropdown list, which would enable users to select values toward the bottom of the list, does not appear. That scrollbar is missing in Firefox.
This is likely related to a Firefox rendering issue with the overflow:auto style. There are numerous entries on the web that indicate Firefox for Mac has a problem with overflow:auto. For example:
http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-96958.html
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread44144.html
http://iamthewalr.us/blog/2007/04/20/firefox-on-the-mac/#comment-2321
http://www.errorforum.com/mozilla-firefox-error/3503-will-float-mac-firefox-scrollbars-floating-pop-up-windows.html
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?query_format=specific&order=relevance+desc&bug_status=__open__&id=187435
That being the case, it seems that there should be some workaround to address this, either via a style or through some alternate control. Or perhaps there is a property that we can apply to the ReportViewer control that I'm unaware of which addresses this.
If you know of a workaround, or can suggest an alternate approach that we could implement quickly, please respond. Thanks.

Any fix for the seemingly random sort order of the variables in the dropdown list when configuring parameters and connection managers in the SSISDB catalog?
I imported all of our connection strings into an environment (about 200 of them). They were inserted in alpha order and the ID values within the internal.environment_variables table shows them in order as well, by ID and by name.
When I run profiler and capture the command that retrieves them and run it in ssms they are in order but in the dropdown they seem random.
There are no values within any of the tables that accounts for the order they are in.
If a package has 5 connections you need to go through the unsorted list 5 times to find them.
Sometimes you get lucky and they are in the first 20 or so.
I know I can write a script, just wondering if there is a fix for the sorting.

Guys,
In my report builder when I drag the SKU in the filter area, its doesnt give me the dropdown and show me the distinct values, it just gives me a text box and expects me to type in the SKU.
I have other attributes whcih have the same property as SKU but they all work fine when I drag them into Filter area.
Is there a limitation in reporting svcs where if the Field has more than "n" number of distinct records it will not populate the dropdown, instead just present you with a text box?
My DataModel Table has around 110K records and roughly 7K distinct SKU's
I compared the SKU field to other fields in the Report Model Designer and also DataSource View and nothing seems to be out of normal to not show the dropdown with distinct values except for the # of distinct records.
Appreciate your help in advance

Does anyone know how to control the width of the parameter dropdownlist? If you select "Multi-value" for the parameter (non-sp1 version) the parameter list is in a dropdownlist that is manageable in size. If you do not use the multi-value parameter, it looks like the width of the dropdownlist is determined by the width of the longest text of the returned parameters.
Is there any way to control the width of the dropdown?
Thanks

Hi,
I have dropdown parameter with multi-values allowed.
In my report headed I want to show all the dropdown values that were checked by the user to run the report. But since there could be a couple of hundred values I want to show ALL when all the values are selected instead of listing them one by one.
How can I do that?
Thanks,

Hi All,
Hope someone can help here. Since installing Service Pack 2 onto our SQL 2005 instances our report models are not working correctly. When selecting fields within the models as filters, and getting them to prompt when the report is run, the ordering of the data within the filters does not match the selected ordering in the model definition. The ordering is random each time the report is run.
This issue does not happen when setting the filter up, the data appears in the correct order, but when running the report the filter data is incorrect.
I have spent the last 4 hours building a new system and testing this with each stage of service packing. The RTM version of SQL 2005 is ok, SP1 is also OK, but when SP2 is applied the ordering fails.
Any ideas?
Many thanks in advance.
Regards
Nick

I have a dataadapter on my asp.net page and am having issues passing values to the sql statement. See below:
SELECT tblTemp.SensorID, tblSensor.SensorNum, tblTemp.TempTime, tblTemp.TempVal FROM tblTemp
INNER JOIN tblSensor ON tblTemp.SensorID = tblSensor.SensorID
WHERE (tblTemp.TempTime BETWEEN @From AND @To)
AND (tblTemp.SensorID IN (@Sensor))
ORDER BY tblTemp.TempTime
@Sensor is populated in vb with the selected values from a checkboxlist control. I attempted to test this in the "Data Adapter Preview" window, but continually get an error. Is there a way to pass multiple values to a parameter?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I and trying to get some help with Multi-Value parameters in Reporting Services 2005 in VS 2005.
I’m new to the product and struggling with the TSQL syntax.
(I have simplified my SQL statement for the purposes of this question)
I have a dataset below which has 1 parameter;
="SELECT * " &
" FROM dbo.Table" &
Iif(Parameters!Sex.Value = "ALL",""," AND dbo.Table.Sex = '" & Parameters!Sex.Value &"'" )
The Sex parameter dataset contains F, M, U and ALL – the above parameter allows me to select on any of the 4 options.
I would like to use the multi-value parameter but am struggling to grasp the syntax. Believe me I have tried a few things.
Could someone provide me with an idiots guide on how to make my basic parameter a multi-value parameter?
Any help would be great.

Greetings - I see a few postings regarding problems regarding multi-value parameters, and see no solution responses.
Am attempting to filter on data using a multiple values drop-down parameter. Dataset has been created and runs correctly. The Multi-value parameter setting has been checked. When report is run and 1 value selected from drop-down, report runs fine. If multiples (or all) are selected, then receive "Query execution failed for dataset "mydataset" incorrect syntax near ','" error.
Can someone please advise a solution to this? Tks & B/R

I know that there have been a number of Posts with reference to Multi-Value Parameters, but none have helped me resolve my issue.
I am relatively new to SSRS, and use it in it's simplist form. i.e. I do not use xml code or SQL Statements, I just use the Menus.
I have created a Multi-Value Parameter (Report > Report Parameters) and have assigned a number of Non Queried Labels and Values. I have also assigned this to the Filter Tab via Table Properties.
When previewing, if I select each parameter individually and view the Report everything is fine. If I select one or more, the report only returns values for the first parameter listed.
Have I missed a step, is there a bug or do I just need to be trainied to use SQL Statements? (Hopefully not the latter!!)
Help would be very much appreciated.

I'm using a sql server Stored Procedure, that uses a defined parameter to pull the records. How can i make this stored procedure a multi value parameter. can anybody tell me if it is possible in RS2005 to create a multi-value parameter in wich it is possibility to drill down? Say i want to use a multi-value parameter to show data for one or more specific years or months. Then the multivalue parameter would contain a list of years, with a + sign next to them, making it possible to drill down to the specific months.

Hi,
Lets say I have two multi-value parameters on a report. One is required, the other is not. The multi-value parameter that is not required is allowed to be blank. In the WHERE clause of my query I wanted to do this:
Code Snippet AND
EXISTS
(SELECT * FROM SomeTable AS ST_1
WHERE (MyCode IN (@My_Codes2)) OR @My_Codes2 IS NULL)
Of course I can't do that since multi-value parameters are not allowed to be null. I see that they are allowed to be blank, but how do I check for that? I tried
Code Snippet
OR @My_Codes2=''
That doesn't work. I can set a default value of 'None' and say:
Code Snippet
OR @My_Codes2='None'
Unfortunately this doesn't work. As long as the default value is 'None' it's fine. When I fill in the parameter I get the following error:
An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near ','.
Please note that I am not using a TSQL stored procedure here. It's just a plain old embedded SQL statement.
Thanks,
DD

Hi
i have a report that can show upto 8 charts, dependant on the selection(s) made in a multi-valued parameter.
basically, the report gets loads of data back from DataCube.
if the user has selected (for example) 2 categories in the multi-valued parameter (e.g. "beverages" & "confectionary") , the the first chart will show the results filtered for "beverages" and the second chart will show the results for the "confectionary" category.
but
i want to hide any charts that are not used - i.e. the user only selects 3 categories, i want to show 3 and hide 5 charts and am trying to do this with IIF in the FILTER properties of the chart
so for each chart, i am checking to see if a Category selection has been made for that chart - and if it has, filter the results and display the chart. if no selection has been made, then filter the results for "XXXXX" (no data with this category)
am doing this by trying to get the selected value or "xxxxx" if noting selected
to hide the second chart when only one category has been selected, tried
e.g. for the third chart
=iif(
Parameters!LOOKUPITEMCategoryDescription.count>2,
Parameters!LOOKUPITEMCategoryDescription.Label(2),
"xxxxx")
doesnt work - gives an #Error as a reult
But it works fine when there are > 2 categories selected
also
this works fine when there is 2 or >2 category selected
=iif(
Parameters!LOOKUPITEMCategoryDescription.count>2,
"more than 2",
"not more than 2")
it would appear that IIF is trying to evaluate the TRUE condition(Parameters!HydraCORELOOKUPITEMCategoryDescription.Label(2)) even though the condition is false !!!
help please
thx

How do you configure a multi-value parameter so it will allow the user to not enter the parameter?
I'm using integer multi-value parameters. I can't set the parameter to allow null, and when I preview the report and leave the parameter blank, it tells me to enter at least one value. I tried it with string parameters, and the report just doesn't run in preview if you don't enter any values, even if you choose "allow blank".
How do you specify a multi-value parameter to allow "empty" or "null"?

Here's tricky one.
I have a fairly complex report that was given to me that was hard coded for single parameters. There is a dropdown for each market (created from a query in SSRS). The users have to run for each market each week.
Is there a way to use this report as a Sub-report inside a list of a master report and then use a mult-value parameter?
I want this multi-value parameter to build the values for the list and then run the "sub-report" for each value.
Essentially, I want to create a for each loop.
Any ideas?
