Sender Activation Procedure Never Gets Called

Jan 25, 2008

Hi,

I have implemented the code from the 'Recycling Conversations' post that Remus Resanu has posted. For some reason my sender activation procedure never gets called. I thought it was working at one point but now can not get it to work. Messages are being sent correctly from sender to receiver but the c_audit_send_queue_activation procedure never gets called.

According to my code that calls 'begin conversation timer(@dlg) timeout=30;' I would think that after 30 seconds that my activated procedure would get called with a DialogTimer message but it does not. Nor does the activation procedure on the sender get called when I manually end conversations on the receiver side.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Here is my send procedure:

Code Snippet
create procedure [dbo].[c_audit_p_send_message]
@msg nvarchar(max)
as
begin
if @msg is not null
begin
begin try
set nocount on;
declare @dlg uniqueidentifier
declare @counter int;
declare @error int;
declare @errid bigint, @dbname nvarchar(128)
set @counter = 1;
begin transaction;
while(1=1)
begin
select @dlg = dialog_id from dbo.audit_dialog with(holdlock) where audit_dialog_id_X = @@spid
if @dlg is null
begin
begin dialog conversation @dlg
from service [tcp://SFT3DEVSQL01:4022/TyMetrix360Audit/DataSender]

begin conversation timer(@dlg) timeout=30;
insert into dbo.audit_dialog(audit_dialog_id_X, dialog_id) values(@@spid, @dlg)
end;
send on conversation @dlg message type [//TyMetrix360Audit/Message] (@msg)
set @error = @@ERROR;
if @error = 0
begin
break;
end
set @counter = @counter + 1;
if @counter > 10

insert into audit_error (error_procedure, error_line, error_number, error_message, error_severity, error_state, audited_data)
select error_procedure(), error_line(), error_number(), error_message(), error_severity(), error_state(), @msg
break;
end
delete from dbo.audit_dialog where dialog_id = @dlg;
set @dlg = null;
end

end try
begin catch
insert into audit_error (error_procedure, error_line, error_number, error_message, error_severity, error_state, audited_data)

end catch
end
end
GO

here is the activatation procedure:

Code Snippet
create procedure [dbo].[c_audit_p_send_queue_activation]

begin
declare @dlg uniqueidentifier
declare @msgtype sysname
declare @msg varbinary(max)

Activation Procedure Design

Apr 24, 2007

I've been experimenting with Service Broker and was surprised at one aspect of the design: the interface to Activation stored procedures.

I would have expected the queue to be a parameted passed to the procedure rather than having to hard code the queue query into the SP.

In a system with lots of queues it seems plausible that the same activation procedure might want to be used with several queues.

Any comments?

Question On Internal Activation Stored Procedure Security Context

Jun 25, 2006

CLR function has the following few lines which is invoked from Internal Activation Stored Procedure:

SqlCommand command = Connection.CreateCommand();

command.CommandText = "CREATE ASSEMBLY " + """ + AsmName + """ +" AUTHORIZATION [dbo]"+ " FROM " + "'" + regasm.UncPath + "'" + " WITH PERMISSION_SET=SAFE";

command.ExecuteNonQuery();

I am getting the following error:

"Could not impersonate the client during assembly file operation."

The CLR function is invoked from Service Broker internal activation stored procedure.

"SELECT user_name()" returns dbo just before CREATE ASSEMBLY execution.

SqlContext.WindowsIdentity.Name is "NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" as the Data Engine runs with the LocalSystem account.

How do I create a the necessary security context for "CREATE ASSEMBLY" to succeed ?

Service Broker Queue activation with EXECUTE AS = "SELF", "OWNER", domain account or dbo, all result in the above error. The Service Broker assembly having the internal activation stored procedure is registered "unsafe".

Many Thanks.

Raiserror In Service Broker Internal Activation Stored Procedure

May 17, 2006

I use Try ... catch blok in my activation stored procedure. When SQL Server raise error (e.g. Primary key violation) in Try blok, XACT_STATE in Catch blok has value 1 = commitable transaction and I can use rollback transaction to savepoint. But when I use Raiserror() in Try blok, XACT_STATE in Catch blok has value -1 = uncommitable transaction and I can't use rollback transaction to savepoint. When I drop automatic activation for given queue and I run this stored procedure with Raiserror(), XACT_STATE has value 1 = commitable transaction.

What a problem may cause this different behavior ?

Best Regards,
Pavel

Getting “EXECUTE Permission Denied On Object 'sp_start_job' From Activation Procedure.

Jan 5, 2006

Hi guys, please see if you can help me with this...

I have an activation stored procedure that starts a SQL Agent Job which executes a SSIS package.  However when the stored procedure runs it fails with the error EXECUTE permission denied on object 'sp_start_job'. The message queue was created under the €˜sa€™ account, and I have tried setting the activation procedure to run as SELF, OWNER as well as creating a user account with sysadmin rights and running it under that account, all with the same  result.  When I run the stored procedure manually (under pretty much any of the accounts I have set up) it executes without any errors and kicks off the job it is meant to.  The error only occurs when the stored procedure is activated via the service broker message queue.

I changed the stored proc to write out system_user and current_user to a table so that I could see what it was running as and as it turns out it appears to be running as the correct user (which is €˜sa€™ when set to SELF) but not inheriting the correct permissions.

Is this a bug, and if so is there some work-around for it?

Has anyone else encountered anything similar?

SQL Server 2005 Service Broker - Activation Stored Procedure Memory Usuage

Nov 9, 2007

We are looking for some guidance with an issue we have picked up with our implementation of Service Broker here on the ABSA Capital project and I am hoping you can help or point us in the direction of someone.

The architecture we have implemented for service broker is to make use of an Activation stored procedure on two queues (1 SP per queue) to process the messages received. What we have found is that the activation stored procedure runs on a background session and its CPU time and memory just grows to the point where it brought one of our UAT servers to a grinding halt.

Is there anyway we can reduce the memory consumption of the activation stored procedure or is this one of those things that still need to be ironed out in Service Broker?

Update Stored Procedure Not Working When Called From C#

Jul 11, 2007

OK, I have been raking my brains with this and no solution yet. I simply want to update a field in a table given the record Id. When I try the SQL in standalone (no sp) it works and the field gets updated. When I do it by executing the stored procedure from a query window in the Express 2005 manager it works well too. When I use the stored procedure from C# then it does not work:
 1. ExecuteNonQuery() always returns -1 2. When retrieving the @RETURN_VALUE parameter I get -2, meaning that the SP did not find a matching record.
So, with #1 there is definitely something wrong as I would expect ExecuteNonQuery to return something meaningful and with #2 definitely strange as I am able to execute the same SQL code with those parameters from the manager and get the expected results.
Here is my code (some parts left out for brevity):1 int result = 0;
2 if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(icaoCode))
3 {
4 icaoCode = icaoCode.Trim().ToUpper();
5 try
6 {
7 SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(storedProcedureName);(StoredProcedure.ChangeAirportName);
8 cmd.Parameters.Add("@Icao", SqlDbType.Char, 4).Value = newName;
9 cmd.Parameters.Add("@AirportName", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 50).Value = (String.IsNullOrEmpty(newName) ? null : newName);
10 cmd.Parameters.Add("@RETURN_VALUE", SqlDbType.Int).Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue;
11 cmd.Connection = mConnection; // connection has been opened already, not shown here
12 cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
13 int retval = cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); // returns -1 somehow even when RETURN n is != -1
14 result = (int)cmd.Parameters["@RETURN_VALUE"].Value;
15
16 }
17 catch (Exception ex)
18 {
19 result = -1;
20 }
21 }

 And this is the stored procedure invoked by the code above:1 ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[ChangeAirfieldName]
2 -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
3 @Id bigint = null,-- Airport Id, OR
4 @Icao char(4) = null,-- ICAO code
5 @AirportName nvarchar(50)
6 AS
7 BEGIN
8 -- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
9 -- interfering with SELECT statements.
10 SET NOCOUNT ON;
11
12 -- Parameter checking
13 IF @Id IS NULL AND @Icao IS NULL
14 BEGIN
15 RETURN -1;-- Did not specify which record to change
16 END
17 -- Get Id if not known given the ICAO code
18 IF @Id IS NULL
19 BEGIN
20 SET @Id = (SELECT [Id] FROM [dbo].[Airports] WHERE [Icao] = @Icao);
21 --PRINT @id
22 IF @Id IS NULL
23 BEGIN
24 RETURN -2;-- No airport found with that ICAO Id
25 END
26 END
27 -- Update record
28 UPDATE [dbo].[Airfields] SET [Name] = @AirportName WHERE [Id] = @Id;
29 RETURN @@ROWCOUNT
30 END

 As I said when I execute standalone UPDATE works fine, but when approaching it via C# it returns -2 (did not find Id).

SQL Server 2014 :: Embed Parameter In Name Of Stored Procedure Called From Within Another Stored Procedure?

Jan 29, 2015

I have some code that I need to run every quarter. I have many that are similar to this one so I wanted to input two parameters rather than searching and replacing the values. I have another stored procedure that's executed from this one that I will also parameter-ize. The problem I'm having is in embedding a parameter in the name of the called procedure (exec statement at the end of the code). I tried it as I'm showing and it errored. I tried googling but I couldn't find anything related to this. Maybe I just don't have the right keywords. what is the syntax?

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[runDMQ3_2014LDLComplete]
@QQ_YYYY char(7),
@YYYYQQ char(8)
AS
begin
SET NOCOUNT ON;
select [provider group],provider, NPI, [01-Total Patients with DM], [02-Total DM Patients with LDL],

Execute Xp_cmdshell From Store Procedure (called From Aspx)

May 21, 2004

Hi, I have been searching for an answer to allow me to execute xp_cmdshell from withing store prcedure by calling the store procedure from an aspx via click on a button. This is what I found from my reserch but was not able to know where to set the rights and what each of them means:
"To run xp_cmdshell for a non-system administrator user, you must grant the following rights.
MSSQLServer and SQLServerAgent Services
Act as part of the Operating System.
Increase Quotas.
Replace a process level token.
Log on as a batch job."

The above quote was from the following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;264155

The bottom line is to be able to call a store procedure from an aspx page to execute the code which contain xp_cmdshell command, an example of such command is like:
------------------------------------------------------------
EXEC master..xp_cmdshell 'dir d:BT_importDatasales_option_price_report.csv'

Thanks for your help

How To Get The Output Parameter From An Internally Called Stored Procedure???

May 29, 2005

Hi all,i have a problem and couldnt find anything even close  to it. please help me, here is the description of what i m trying to accomplish:I have a trigger that is generating a column value and calling a stored procedure after the value is generated. And this stored procedure is setting this generated value as an output parameter. But my problem is:my asp.net page is only sending an insert parameter to the table with the trigger, trigger is running some code depending on the insert parameter and calling this other stored procedure internally. So basically i m not calling this last stored procedure that sets the output parameter within my web form. How can i get the output parameter in my webform? Everthing is working now, whenever an insert hits the table trigger runs and generates this value and called stored procedure sets it as an output parameter. I can get the output parameter with no problem in query analyzer, so the logic has no problem but i have no idea how this generated output parameter can be passed in my webform since its not initiated there.any help will greately be appreciated, i m sure asp.net and sql server 2000 is powerful and flexible enough to accomplish this but how??-shane

Gettings Warnings Sent From A Stored Procedure Called With Jdbc

Dec 6, 2007

When running a stored procedure, how can i retrieve the warnings that are issued within the stored procedure?

the code used is below,

the jdbc is connecting fine, it is running the stored procedure, but when an error is raised in the stored procedure, it is not coming back into s.getwarnings()
warning raised in stored proc with

Code Block

RAISERROR ('Error', 16, 1)with nowait;

there are no results for the stored procedure, I am just wanting to get the warnings

Code Block

Class.forName("com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver");

Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:sqlserver://localh...........);

CallableStatement s = con.prepareCall("{call procedure_name}");

s.execute();

//running in seprate thread

SQLWarning warn = s.getWarnings();
while (m.running) {
if(warn == null) {
warn = s.getWarnings();
}
safeOut(warn);
if(warn != null)
warn = warn.getNextWarning();
m.wait(100);

}the code is not complete, but should show what is happening

it is continually outputting null for the warning, though the strored proc is definately raising errors, which is proven by running it in a query window in sql server.

it is retreiving warning if the statement is a raiseerror instead of a call to the proc

Code Block

CallableStatement s = con.prepareCall("RAISERROR ('Error', 1, 1)with nowait;");

this thread is quite related, but doesnt offer a working solution
Getting messages sent while JDBC Driver calls stored procedure

any help much appreciated,

thankyou

DB Engine :: Can Find A Record Of Stored Procedure Being Called?

Jul 15, 2015

I seem to be able to see where a procedure is being recompiled, but not the actual statement that was executing the procedure.

Note, with 2008 there is a DMV called dm_exec_procedure_stats , which is not present in 2005

USE YourDb;

SELECT qt.[text] AS [SP Name],
qs.last_execution_time,
qs.execution_count AS [Execution Count]
FROM sys.dm_exec_query_stats AS qs
CROSS APPLY sys.dm_exec_sql_text(qs.sql_handle) AS qt
WHERE qt.dbid = DB_ID()
AND objectid = OBJECT_ID('YourProc')

The above shows results that include the CREATE PROCEDURE statements for the procedure in question, but this only indicates that the procedure was being recompiled, not necessarily that it was being executed?

Is The Transaction Context Available Within A 'called' Stored Procedure For A Transaction That Was Started In Parent Stored Procedure?

Mar 31, 2008

I have  a stored procedure 'ChangeUser' in which there is a call to another stored procedure 'LogChange'. The transaction is started in 'ChangeUser'. and the last statement in the transaction is 'EXEC LogChange @p1, @p2'. My questions is if it would be correct to check in 'LogChange' the following about this transaction: 'IF @@trancount >0 BEGIN Rollback tran' END Else BEGIN Commit END.
 Any help on this would be appreciated.

SQL Service Broker - How To Resend Messages In Sender Transmission Queue?

Nov 26, 2007

I have a question about SQL Service Broker.

Here are the steps I use to produce the issue.

1) I drop the Service Broker on the Receiver by running the following sql script:

if exists (select * from sys.services where name = N'//TyMetrix360Audit/DataWriter') drop service [//TyMetrix360Audit/DataWriter]

2) I send some messages using the SQL Service broker on the sender side

3) The messages I send stay in sender transmission queue. Here is an example of what my transmission queue looks like after running select * from sys.transmission_queue on the sender.

Service Broker received an error message on this conversation. Service Broker will not transmit the message; it will be held until the application ends the conversation.

The main point is that the sys.transmission queue retains the messages with the error 'Service Broker will not transmit the message; it will be held until the application ends the conversation.'

4. I execute the following sql statment on the sender:

select * from sys.conversation_endpoints

and see that the conversation that sent the messages are in state 'ER'

5. I then recreate the receiver with the following script:

create service [//TyMetrix360Audit/DataWriter] authorization dbo on queue dbo.TyMetrix360AuditQueue([//TyMetrix360Audit/Contract])

6. I send some more messages and see that the new messages are being received and processed correctly.

7. But what of the messages stuck in the sender transmission queue. How are these messages to be resent? Since the conversations are in state 'ER' it seems they are not being resent. Do I need to write a custom SQL script to resend them? I do not want to end the conversation because the message will be lost and not resent.

So, in conclusion, the main question is:

When the receiver goes down, or the receiver service broker simply does not exist and messages pile up the sender transmission queue like in my example how do these messages get resent when the receiver is restored?

By the way when I run

select service_broker_guid from sys.databases where database_id = db_id()

I get the same GUID after the server is restored.

Thanks

SQL Service Broker - How To Resend Messages Stuck In Sender Transmission Queue

Nov 26, 2007

Here is a description:

1. drop receiver side service broker with sql command : drop service [//TyMetrix360Audit/DataWriter]

2. send a message from the sender.

3. now the sys.transmission_queue on the sender keeps the message.

The relevant tables on the sender and receiver no look like this:

the following summarizes the transmission queue on the SENDER:

conversation handle message_body transmission status
5A0F1D1F-449C-DC11-8EED-0002B3D9F7B5 my message in binary, ie 0x.F4E1.... <blank>

the following summarizes the sys.conversation_endpoints on the SENDER:

conversation handle conversation_id state
5A0F1D1F-449C-DC11-8EED-0002B3D9F7B5 461891C8-5D53-4D89-A7C6-097FE2EDB22A CO

the following summarizes the transmission queue on the RECEIVER:

conversation handle message_body transmission status
5A0F1D1F-449C-DC11-8EED-0002B3D9F7B5 message body of error message...... One or more messages could not be delivered to the local service targeted by this dialog.

the following summarizes the sys.conversation_endpoints on the RECEIVER:

conversation handle conversation_id state
5A0F1D1F-449C-DC11-8EED-0002B3D9F7B5 461891C8-5D53-4D89-A7C6-097FE2EDB22A DO

What do I do now?

There is a message stuck in the sender transmission queue. You responded in my last post that I need to do a RECIEVE on the sender and end the conversation myself? This is not helping me. I am still confused about the answer to this. Can you provide some sort of code outline or steps to resolve this issue. As of now I do not know how to resend my messages stuck in the sender transmission queue and they can not be lost when the conversation is ended.

Also, I thought SQL Service broker was supposed to hadle things like this. It is common for the receiver to not be there. In this case the messages should resend automatically once the receiver is back up. Please help as there is no documentation online about how to resolve this issue and your last response was not adequate.

Thanks

I scheduled my subscription and tested it. I didn't receive any mail from the setting email address, but got an error message in ReportServerService log file as following.

Error sending mail, CDO error -2147220978, will not resend
Error sending email. System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x8004020E): The server rejected the sender address. The server response was: 530 authentication required - for help go to http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/pop/pop-11.html

I did a little search, but couldn't find any solution for it. Is anybody successfully to get the Reporting Services subscription by email function working through MS SQL Server Management Studio or if you have a solution for this issue, would you mind to share the experience with me. I will be very appreciated.

Many Queues And One Activation Procedure For That Queues.

Sep 22, 2006

Hi, All!

Could you please help me in my problem?

I develop Service Broker applcation, SB has 20 queues, also I have one Activation Procedure which carries out following actions:

CREATE PROCEDURE proc_ms_Activation

AS

BEGIN

WAITFOR (RECEIVE TOP(1) message_type_name, message_body, conversation_handle, message_id FROM Queue1)

-- process message, save statisctisc and etc

END

Problem in that: when I execute command WAITFOR (RECEIVE TOP (1) message_type_name, message_body, conversation_handle, message_id FROM Queue1) I should specify a name concrete Queue, for example "... FROM Queue1 ". I would like to use one procedure for processing all Queue.

How I can design my application that one Activation Procedure processed messages from all Queues?

Thank a lot for help.

Why Is It Called Stored Procedure Instead Of Stored Sets?

Jul 23, 2005

Since RDMBS and its language SQL is set-based would it make more senseto call a given stored process "Stored Sets" instead of currenttheorically misleading Stored Procedure, as a measure to prodprogrammers to think along the line of sets instead of procedure?

Activation

May 1, 2007

I was testing around with a sample service broker app using activation, and came across an interesting question. The little app sends a series of four messages to a queue, either on the same conversation or on seperate ones. Each message invokes one stored procedure in my activation procedure. All the procedure does is enter a record into a test table and then wait for an allotted amount of time. In my example, the first message called a proc that waited 20 sec, the 2nd one that waited 10 seconds, the third 5 seconds, and the 4th 1 second. I am using internal activation on the queue. It seemed that in both scenarios (sending on 4 separate conversations and on one conversation) the procedures executed "almost" sequentially. "Almost" meaning that the first procedure was done before the last one started executing. It makes sense to me that this would happen where I sent them on the same conversation, but not really when I sent them on 4 seperate ones. Is it because when I call a procedure from my activation procedure it locks the queue so that another message cannot be processed (I'm processing a message at a time)? How could I make it so that the 4th procedure (the one that only waits 1 second) returns before the 1st procedure (the one that waits 20 seconds)?

More Problems With Activation

May 9, 2006

I have two databases on the same instance.

One is Basket_ODS and the other is Intelligence_ODS. I am using service broker activation on a queue to move data from the Basket_ODS table to the Intelligence_ODS database. Previously I was able to move from table to table in Basket_ODS, however now that I am moving it to another database on the same instance it is no longer working.

If I set my active connection in SQL Management Studio to this user(BrokerUser) and execute the "move" procedure it works. When activated by Service Broker however, it does not. Here is the error message:

2006-05-09 14:47:52.940 spid86s The activated proc [ODS].[ProcessOrderQueue] running on queue Basket_ODS.ODS.Order Process Queue output the following: 'The server principal "BrokerUser" is not able to access the database "Intelligence_ODS" under the current security context.'

I'm sure I missed something becasue it works fine in the same database. BrokerUser has datareader and datawriter in both databases.

Thanks for any help on this matter.

Xp_cmdshell And Activation

Oct 11, 2006

We are trying to use xp_cmdshell commands in service broker. If I kick off the process without activation, the process succeeds. If I enable activation, the tasks with xp_cmdshell fail.

The xp_cmdshell task is either a echo command so that users know that we are processing a database, or a file copy.

I used the TechNet article by Roger Wolter to create the queues and stored procedures.

We will be working across domains that have one-way trusts.

Activation Not Working

Sep 11, 2006

Hi There

Everything works 100% until i activate my sp.

I specify to execute as 'dbo' in the alter queue statement. I also define the activated sp to execute as 'dbo'.

But i keep getting permission errors from my activated sp. i have tried to excute as 'sa' , i have even tried to write a job that excutes to stored procedure but it also get weird errors. Bottom line if i exceute the sp in management studio logged in as sa it works , but thorugh activation or a job nothing works, as 'dbo' or 'sa'.

???

Thanx
