I have a report that can get null as a value for one of his parameters.
I'm running this report in a reportViewer (WinForm application).
How can I send this report the value NULL?
I tried using:
Microsoft.reporting.winforms.reportParameter("p_param",null)
But I got an error that the call is ambiguous becouse it have two overload:
1) Microsoft.reporting.winforms.reportParameter(string,string)
2) Microsoft.reporting.winforms.reportParameter(string,string[])
So how can I send the value NULL?

Sending Null DateTime Value To Stored Procedure From VB
Nov 3, 2005In a VB.NET script, I am adding the dbnull value to a parameter that will populate a smalldatetime column:
cmd.Parameters.Add("@unitHdApprove", System.DBNull.Value.ToString)
The stored procedure then defines the input as smalldatetime:
@unitHdApprove smalldatetime,
However, the result is that the record is inserted with 1/1/1900 as the date value, instead of <NULL>.
I'm guessing that this occurs because the conversion of a '' to date will return 1/1/1900, and VB requries the parameter value to be a string (at least with this syntax), so System.DBNull.Value.ToString really equals ''.
I've rewritten the proc to accept the date as a string instead, and then for each date, cast it to a smalldatetime or set it to null as is appropriate. But this is a really bulky way to do things with more than a few dates! Is there any way to change what is in my VB code so that the procedure will insert the actual null value?

Sep 20, 2006Hey. I need to substitute a value from a table if the input var is null. This is fine if the value coming from table is not null. But, it the table value is also null, it doesn't work. The problem I'm getting is in the isnull line which is in Dark green color because @inFileVersion is set to null explicitly and when the isnull function evaluates, value returned from DR.FileVersion is also null which is correct. I want the null=null to return true which is why i set ansi_nulls off. But it doesn't return anything. And the select statement should return something but in my case it returns null. If I comment the isnull statements in the where clause, everything works fine. Please tell me what am I doing wrong. Is it possible to do this without setting the ansi_nulls to off??? Thank you

SampleID and Product are blank for the rest of the rows. So my task is to fill those blank rows with the first row that has the sampleID and Product and load into the table.
Subscription Issue With Null Default Parameter - Key Cannot Be Null
May 3, 2007I have a report that is run on a monthly basis with a default date of null. The stored procedure determines the month-end date that it should use should it be sent a null date.
The report works fine when I tell it to create a history entry; however, when I try to add a subscription it doesn't appear to like the null parameter value. Since I have told the report to have a default value of null it doesn't allow me to enter a value on the subscription page.
Now, I suppose I could remove the parameter altogether from the stored proc, but then the users would never be able to run the report for a previous time period. Can someone explain to me why default values aren't allowed to be used on subscriptions when they seem to work fine for ad hoc and scheduled reports? This is really quite frustrating as most of my reports require a date value and default to null so that the user doesn't have to enter them for the latest data.

Returned SQLParam.SqlValue Is {Null} But Can't Test For Null?
Nov 5, 2007I run a stored procedure for which I have a return variable. The stored procedure returns the ID of a row in a table if it exists:
m_sqlCmd.ExecuteScalar();
The m_sqlCmd has been fed an SQLParameter with direction set to output.
When the stored proc returns, I want to test it. Now when there IS a row it returns the ID ok.
When the row doesn't exist, in my watch I have:
m_sqlParam.SqlValue with value {Null}
I can't seem to work out how to test this value out.
I've tried several things but none seem to work.
This line compiles ok, but the following runs into the IF statement as if the SqlValue is null??
if (m_sqlParam.SqlValue != null)....
{
// I'm here!! I thought the watch says this is null???
}
Sorry if this is obvious, but I can't work this one out!!

Mar 26, 2007Looks like there was a fix and then I read this fix is not a fix. Does anyone know how this can be rectified? Does it mean that only Windows authentiation is the only way it works. The Software is over 2 years old, there are no excuses.

Apr 2, 2007I am getting this error: "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'OrderID', table 'outman.outman.Contact'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails." -- But my value is not null. I did a response.write on it and it show the value. Of course, it would be nice if I could do a breakpoint but that doesn't seem to be working. I've built a sample CLR function with the following declaration....

And it works as expected, except when I use NULL:

It returns the value "Unknown" as it would have for any unknown DeptCode, as-programmed.
I'm of the theory it should have returned NULL without actually firing the function? Or is this only for non-CLR items... or stored procedures, not functions?

col varchar(10) then we would show col as 'NULL' for some condition and actual value when no condition
Normaly date values are stored here e.g under col 20150901 .

Note this is an extract process and we are presenting data by pumping the data in a table .
Now there is another similar column -colz varchar(10) which stores date but doesnt have case condition so whenever date has no value its shows null which is database null.
So whats the difference between database null and string null ?
How can we show database null for the case condition instead of string "null"?

What I have to do is take orders and generate a report that gives the daily totals of the orders The dates will be on the vertical and the subclass titles on the horizontal: Output

The SO orders for example can have a diff status each day and I will
need to count this .
1 - how would I pull the orders that I want. I have pulled all credit work orders in but I only want the ones from 2008. Then once I pull them in how do I get the daily info., ie what records fell into the categories for that day. Do I need a loop, cursor, case statement? I also need to count the # of any give group as above. I am new at this and really do not know where to proceed.

In my web application, I need to send reminders to a list of persons in that database to fill out a form , once in every month.
Suppose a person have not filled the form, then agaian afetr 15 days need to send a reminder only to him . And if he doesnt fill it again I need to sned another reminder after 10 days . ...
In one word .. i need to snooze that person who have not complted the form continously and the end of month, even if doesn't complete, I need to tell him tto contact the Admin.
How should I do it in my application. ?

I am using SQL Server and think that SQL Mail is a good idea, I can find many articles about which needs Outlook for that which is much difficult on the web server. Remember I need to send email only not to receive.

Apr 27, 2000I am having a problem with SqlServer 7.0 sending mail when the sqlserver account is not logged into the machine and mail is open. If I log off of the box and an alert sends mail it just sits in the outbox of the mail client until I log in. Is this the way it is supposed to be or am I doing something wrong. I am using the Inbox as my client.

Sending An Email From Within An SP
Jan 8, 2001The following SP adds a record to a table. I want to then send an email from within this SP to notify someone that their login is blocked. I can get their email address easily with a simple select but how does the xp_sendmail procedure actually fit in ?? I've tried adding it in just before the raiserror part but it doesn't work ? The raiserror part is used to trigger an alert to notify me but i need to also notify the client. Can anyone see what i am doing wrong please. Many thanks.

I have a report that gets everyones name who has not filled in attendance for a class. what they want is when the report is ran an email gets sent out. so I have written the sql to create a temp table that will get the distinct email.... so lets say the table consists of

gagsag@shsna.com
what i need to do now is get those three address and add them to a string that would be in the format of
jacob.ostop@synergit.com ; xxxx@yyyy.com ; gagsag@shsna.com
so that i can put that in the TO field of my email.
my problem is that i dont know how to get them each 1 at a time and put in semi colons..
can someone please help me!

Mar 22, 2006Hi, after some tooling round, googling, hair-pulling etc i have some prototypes of a simple C#.NET 1.1 console app which can now post a message to my yukon SB service i set up. It calls an internal activation stored proc to store the message in a simple table.
The problem i had was in the connection string "... Asynchronous Processing=true". The run-time throws an exception moaning about the Asynchronous Processing=true bit. So i just omitted it completely... Seems to work fine and as expected. I can post a message, my app exits, and the dummy stored proc (which i deliberately made enter a loop updating the table thousands of times to slow it down and lock the table) completed several seconds later proving the asychronousity of it (i issued a "select count(*) from X" query to wait for the write lock to be released, so i knew when the stored proc had finished and released its lock).
So, i guess my question is, firstly what is the "Asynchronous Processing=true" bit for in the connection string if we can just leave it out? And can anyone see any issues with what ive done?

How can I add the contents of columns A and B SO THAT I DO NOT GET A NULL RESULT WHEN A IS NULL.
The result of A+B concatanation will be stored in a column, C.

I've got a query on a particular table returning an odd result:
SELECT DISTINCT WorkStation
FROM Invoice
WHERE WorkStation Is Not Null
ORDER BY WorkStation
This query returns the rows I'd expect plus a null row. This doesn't happen in databases at other sites, or in other tables at this site. The following query behaves as I'd expect returning only non-null AccountNumbers.
SELECT DISTINCT AccountNumber
FROM Suppliers
WHERE AccountNumber Is Not Null
ORDER BY AccountNumber
I can't reproduce these results on another site on a table of the same structure, or on another table at this site.
Any suggestions as to what might be going on?

Default Constraints NULL / Not NULL
Aug 2, 2015I have 595 default constraints in my database. I can return a list of them using the following:

Is there a way I can return a list of just the ones where NULL is still allowed? I want to update all of the columns with a default value to not allow NULLs.
