Serious Error In RS Licensing Docs On MS Web Site

Sep 18, 2006

Correct me if I'm wrong...
There is a potentially costly error in at least 2 Reporting Services
2005 licensing docs on Microsoft€™s web site. They fixed the docs a few months
ago after I called and told them about it but, now they are bad again! Here are
links to the bogus docs:

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/howtolicensers.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/sqlserverlicensing.mspx

Both of these docs say that you need 2 SQL licenses to run
Reporting Services 2005 on a separate server from the SQL engine. This is not
true. You only need 1 license! You do of course need the correct number of CAL's or a CPU license.

The license.txt file that ships on the SQL Server 2005 standard edition install
disk is very clear about this. As you know this is the only doc that is
legally binding. It€™s the only doc that matters. Also, I called and talked to both the
licensing department and the SQL Server product manager about this. Both
confirmed that this was done on purpose in response to customer feedback!

Please help me pressure the marketing document at Microsoft
to fix these confusing documents once and for all! This will be my last post
about this issue. I felt that I had to make one final attempt to get this fixed
before I give up. I€™m having a lot of trouble getting people to actually read
the license.txt and understand the issue. I bet you $5 that the first reply to
this thread will be someone who says I€™m wrong but didn€™t actually read the
license.txt file.

Thanks,
Greg

Editing Word Docs Via T-SQL

Oct 23, 2007

Hello Everyone,

I have a client that stores word documents in a SQL server database and I am trying to import some text data from another database. The problem is that I need to convert the text to a word doc with minimal formating since they convert word docs to bitmaps in order to display the text on custom embedded devices that do not support unicode.

I was hoping someone could point me at the right docs/books that would give me the info on how to construct a word doc from T-SQL. Something like a word merge would work, but I'm not sure how to call it from a T-SQL stored proc.

Thanks a Million!

Error Using Web Site Administration Tool

Mar 7, 2007

I am getting the following error using the Web Site Administration
Tool.  I have created the database I want to use.  Please
help.Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site
Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to
create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set
the provider.

The utility either is not working or I do not know how to use it.

I have SQL 2005 Express and SQL 2000.  SQL 2000 is working
properly, not sure about SQL 2005.  I have been told to use SQL
2000 because that is what our server is using.  I am developing on
my server and when application works will port to our server.

Error Locating Server/Instance Specified From ASP.NET Site

Jan 9, 2007

I'm currently learning my way around with SQL Server 2005 and asp.net 2.0, and for this I wrote a little site that uses SQL Server for it's backend.

I developed it on my laptop, and it works great, until I deployed the website to my test server, so it's visible to the outside world.

The instance I try to access any page that invokes the database, I get the following error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified).

The server doesn't differ much from my laptop setup, except that it accepts connections through named pipes and TCP/IP and has the Network Service as a user(I also tried running the website under Administrator privileges, just to test it out).

Both IIS and the SQL Server running on the same machine(Windows 2003 Server SP1), and the SQL server accepts connections from a locally running SQL Management Studio Express instance. However: It does not accept connections from my laptop, which resides outside the domain. The server is set to use Windows Authentication for log ins.

What am I doing wrong here?

EDIT: Filled out this found questionare:

When Opening The Reports Site, I Get A Name Was Started With An Invalid Character. Error

Aug 24, 2006

Hello, I am running out of ideas on how to get SSRS to work. I am trying get this setup with the intention to replace our Crystal Reports server. Currently I have set up the RS Virtual Directory on a Win XP box. The ReportServer database sits on another SQL2000 box.

I can connect to the http://localhost/ReportServer/ on the XP box to display the page the depicts "Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Version 9.00.2047.00"

When I connect to the http://localhost/Reports/, I get this error "A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing resource 'http://leej/Reports/'. Line 1, Position 2" I checked my IIS Virtual Directory properties for Reports and ASP.NET is set to v2.0.50727. I also executed "aspnet_regiis.exe -i" in the "C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727" directory.

Any thought on how to fix this? I hate to let this blocker deters us from deploying SSRS.

Thanks,

John

Windows SharePoint 3.0 And Project Server 2007- Error On Rebuild Of Site

I used the SharePoint products and technologies configuration wizard to disconnect from the server farm (only actually running on the single server).

I then reran SharePoint products and technologies configuration wizard to setup the site.

Configured the Project Service and attached to the existing dB's.

Previously, I used the url http://servername.domain.forest/PWA/default.aspx .

Now when I attempt the use the same URL, I get the following error:

"An unexpected error has occurred"

I have tested this one 3 servers now and I receive the exact same result. Is there a path I should apply to the servers in order to allow fully qualified server names after a reinstall of the system?

Error Connecting To Localhost Site To View SQL Server Mobile Agent On Device

Feb 9, 2007

I have set up a locahost site in IIS using the "Configure Web Synchronization Wizard". One of the first test I was asked to do was to open a broweser and browse to http://localhost/MobileTest/sqlcesa30.dll

If all is well I should get a web page with the following line:

SQL Server Mobile Server Agent 3.0

But unfortunately I get an error stating :
"The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance."

I checekd the Event log and found this error related the IIS launch process on my machine.

DCOM got error "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. " and was unable to logon .IWAM_Rataq in order to run the server:

where Rataq is the name of my machine. Could my IWAM_Rataq account be corrupted, my other sites on the machine work.

Infact if i put in a Test.htm page in the virtual directory MobileTest I am able to browse to the page.

Can the Account be re-set? is there another problem that I am not aware of. I have Norton Internet 2006 running could that be the reason? Could Norton be blocking the dll from loading? But the event log states it is a Account error.

Any ideas why this might occur? any help is always appreciated

SQL Licensing

Nov 2, 2000

Help me please!!!

I'm going crazy trying to find out the license deal for SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition. It seems that here (in the UK) the Developer edition exists and you can buy it but, Micrisoft (UK) and various resellers etc don't know the licensing deal!!!

Now, i've read a snippet somewhere about the developer edition that for a fixed price of around $499 you get a server license limited to 8 connections and you don't have to buy any CALs! However my reseller thinks that you still have to buy CALs up to maximum of 8? Well, i don't think so!!

Has anyone got this edition and know the deal?

Many thanks...

Licensing

Mar 8, 2007

Hi SQL TEAM

I'm in a bit of a situation.

Please bare with me as i explain.

We would like to host a web server

Web Server = Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition running IIS

All the website hosted on this server will be available to the public.

Question 1.How do i licenses Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition?
Question 2.Do i need a CAL for every single person browsing to any of the websites hosted on the above server.
As far as i know you can not get a PER CPU license for Windows 2003 Server, is this true.
Question 3. Where would a CAL be required.
Question 4. How about remote desktop to the above server? that requires a CAL.

Thanks in advance for any replies

I know that I can have up to 2 GB RAM for the Standard Edition of SQLServer, but if I had two instances, can I have 2 GB per instance, say for 2instances which would equal 4 GB, or is it 2 GB for that installation of SQLServer and all of it's instances? Thanks.

Licensing

Obviously I'm missing something here (Like a brain??), but from the documentation I'm somewhat confused as to the licensing aspect of the everywhere edition.

Scenario: I have a client (small business for example) and I'm updeating their MS Access application, currently having the front and back ends seperate. May I substitute SQL Everywhere edition in place of the data back-end without further licensing, or will a CAL be required?

Thanks,
