Service Sending Messages To Self

I was wondering if there are any potential issues/drawbacks of a service sending a message to itself. Basically I have a situation where I only require one queue to hold messages. So say for instance I had a service named S1 associated with a queue named Q1 then I can do this:

This works as expected. Any thoughts?

Hi, after some tooling round, googling, hair-pulling etc i have some prototypes of a simple C#.NET 1.1 console app which can now post a message to my yukon SB service i set up. It calls an internal activation stored proc to store the message in a simple table.
The problem i had was in the connection string "... Asynchronous Processing=true". The run-time throws an exception moaning about the Asynchronous Processing=true bit. So i just omitted it completely... Seems to work fine and as expected. I can post a message, my app exits, and the dummy stored proc (which i deliberately made enter a loop updating the table thousands of times to slow it down and lock the table) completed several seconds later proving the asychronousity of it (i issued a "select count(*) from X" query to wait for the write lock to be released, so i knew when the stored proc had finished and released its lock).
So, i guess my question is, firstly what is the "Asynchronous Processing=true" bit for in the connection string if we can just leave it out? And can anyone see any issues with what ive done?

Yesterday I made the HelloWorld_CLR sample work and figured today I would create a simple windows service to immulate its functionality. When this was not working I tried the sample again and it stopped working. I have tried several things and nothing has worked. Has anyone seen this before or have any ideas on how I can get it working again? I even tried removing SQL Server and its samples then reinstalling to give me a clean slate but that did not work. I did not make any changes to the software nor did I make any changes to the database however the sample did so I need to make sure I can fix this incase it happens in development not to mention I need to continue development.
The Client Queue is normally empty but sometimes has a request to two in it. The Server Queue has alot in it that are both Request and an unspecified type or has a URL for a type. I would paste it in but it takes too much space. Please let me know if you have any ideas because I am not sure what else to try.

We're looking to send messages to an SSB Queue (our 'Notification' queue) that contains multiple values.. like Message #1: 20,1 to indicate Record #20, send Notification #1.. the reason for this is we have lots of different types of records in our database, and based on certain conditions, we would like to send different notices regarding these various record types.
What is the best format to send mesages like this? We thought about sending TABLE vars.. what other options are there?

I have some long running stored procedures that I invoke from ADO.NET (using Typed Datasets).
Inside the stored procedure, I like to keep track of the execution by using the PRINT command.
Is there a way of extracting and displaying this PRINT information in .NET during the stored procedure execution?

Hello, I've been banging my head trying to figure this one out so I appreciate any help you guys can provide.
I've setup and configured SQL 2005's Database mail and have sent a few plain and simple text emails and I receive it fine at the destination.
I now want to send mime messages but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I took the following source from an email that linked-in sent me which was a mime message:

When I received the email, it didn't appear as html. Instead, I just got the mime message above as plain text in my email as if someone just typed it and sent it to me. What do I need to do for SQL Database Mail to send the above as a MIME message?

I have written a C# console application that adds a message to a SB queue and a C# stored procedure that reads the message from the queue.
I have had so many problems that I'm beginning to doubt the usefulness of this, but that is probably just my frustration speaking.
I am stuck on putting an XML message into the queue and reading the XML in the stored procedure.
The console app has a simple object called Message. This class has 2 fields, a guid and a string. I serialize the object into XML using XmlSerializer. This results in an XML string that looks like this:

I use a SqlCommand to SEND the message to the queue. I use the following code to SEND the message:

For some reason, this message never gets to the stored procedure that is set up to be activated for this queue. Actually, it never even gets written to the queue.
However, If I change the type of parameter in the SEND above to SqlDbType.Xml, the message is written into the queue, but without the '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>' beginning it, so when my stored procedure tries to deserialize the xml, using XmlSerializer, it fails.
Obviously, I have overcome the backflips needed to do XmlSerialization within the SQLCLR, and I am getting the stored procedure activated, because I do get a message logged showing the XML that is received.
Since I have the queue set up to only allow valid XML messages, I'm assuming that inclusion of the <? xml version..../> line prevents the message from passing Service Broker's XML validation. (And by the way, I have never seen an error message placed into the queue, the event log, or thrown when non-xml is passed to a queue that has XML validation turned on. The message just does not show up in the queue. Is this a bug?) But the lack of the line prevents XmlSerializer from working.
How the heck do you serialize an object into XML using XmlSerializer, so that it can be deserialized with XmlSerializer?

I've done a bit of work with the External Activator but I think it may be a bit overkill for what I need to do (which is RECEIVE messages from a single queue and process them with managed code). I've tried creating a Service Broker Interface service that retrieves messages from this queue, but I notice that if I set the timeout to -1 to watch for messages indefinitely, the Service never completes the OnStart code.
I notice if I change the service's timeout to something greater than 0, the message is retrieved, but this defeats the purpose of using a Windows Service app, which I want to continuously monitor the queue. I noticed the External Activator spawns a thread to start monitoring an EventNotification queue, which I can bypass since I want to monitor the notification's target queue.
Rushi, can you point me in the right direction to create a Windows Service that constantly monitors a queue? Also, I'd like the ability to monitor multiple databases (the queue name would be the same) as well, so if that is not feasible from a Windows Service please let me know.
Also, am I sacrificing scalability by NOT using the External Activator and switching to a Windows Service (I believe the External Activator will spawn multiple instances of the processing executable)?

I have an (as yet hypothetical) order entry system. Order data is entered into DB1 and processed in DB2. SSB is used to send the order (order header and detail) via a conversation group. DB1 goes down due to a HDD failure, and is restored from backup. What options do I have for re-processing order dialogs/conversations that were ended just before DB1 went down but do not exist in the restored version of the DB? Or lets say DB2 went down and was restored instead. Order dialogs that are not yet ended in DB2 may have already been ended before it went down, but now do not exist in DB2 after the restore.
Is there a way to restart the conversation from a certain point in time to recover order data that is out of sync due to the failure/restore? A similar scenario might be when restoring production dumps into a test environment; if the dumps are slightly out of sync I'd need to reprocess any messages that were not in sync then the dumps were created.

I am writting a huge Service Broker Application. I notice that each message that is processed appears in the SQL Server Logs. Currently I am just testing with a single queue and tons of messages are showing up in the log. Is there a way that I can turn these informational messages off? I think in the end I may have something like 15 or 20 queues. These messages are very useful for debugging but I may not desire this extensive logging to be running all the time on all of my queues.

Just set up my first Service Broker test. Wanted to send an Event Notification from one instance to another. Finally, the message arrives but profiler shows that the message is still being continously resent (and rejected as being duplicate). What am I doing wrong?

I've got a situation where I want to put request message on a queue. Because starting a conversation is the only way to put messages on a queue I have to start a conversation with myself. So my Begin Dialog Statement looks something like this:

I have a question about SQL Service Broker.
Here are the steps I use to produce the issue.
1) I drop the Service Broker on the Receiver by running the following sql script:

2) I send some messages using the SQL Service broker on the sender side

4. I execute the following sql statment on the sender:

and see that the conversation that sent the messages are in state 'ER'
5. I then recreate the receiver with the following script:

6. I send some more messages and see that the new messages are being received and processed correctly.
7. But what of the messages stuck in the sender transmission queue. How are these messages to be resent? Since the conversations are in state 'ER' it seems they are not being resent. Do I need to write a custom SQL script to resend them? I do not want to end the conversation because the message will be lost and not resent.
So, in conclusion, the main question is:
When the receiver goes down, or the receiver service broker simply does not exist and messages pile up the sender transmission queue like in my example how do these messages get resent when the receiver is restored?
By the way when I run
select service_broker_guid from sys.databases where database_id = db_id()
I get the same GUID after the server is restored.

What do I do now?
There is a message stuck in the sender transmission queue. You responded in my last post that I need to do a RECIEVE on the sender and end the conversation myself? This is not helping me. I am still confused about the answer to this. Can you provide some sort of code outline or steps to resolve this issue. As of now I do not know how to resend my messages stuck in the sender transmission queue and they can not be lost when the conversation is ended.
Also, I thought SQL Service broker was supposed to hadle things like this. It is common for the receiver to not be there. In this case the messages should resend automatically once the receiver is back up. Please help as there is no documentation online about how to resolve this issue and your last response was not adequate.

I have spent days searching the web and forums for an answer to this simple question and cannot find an example.
I have built a service broker application on sql server 2005. The application puts some xml on an incoming queue which is basically a few parameters to be used in a query. This queue will then call a stored proc which does some business logic and puts the resulting results in another queue also in xml.
I have written a test harness in SQL to put messages on the inbound queue and then some sql to retrieve the returned code from the outbound queue.
What I want to do is be able to convert the SQL which does this into .net code to be used by an application. i.e. write in .net some code to put xml on a queue and then write some .net code to retrieve xml from another queue.
I wouldn't have thought this would be a difficult thing to do and would have been done hundreds of times, but unable to find anything to simply send and retrieve XML to service broker queues....
thanks for your help.. its really needed. I found some links, but they are really vague and often doing select statments in service broker or something like this. I don't want to call any sql, just send and recieve XML on the queues.
any example code that does this, would be really helpfull

I have an almost virgin install of SQLExpres running on a WIN2K Pro system.
Have been able to create and connect db to Access 2000 without problem.
Now I wish to extend to remote connections. Using Surface Area Configuration tool, I changed Remote Connections to Local and Remote.
Whenever this setting contains TCP/IP and I try to restart the service I receive the following errors:
System Log:
The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service terminated with service-specific error 10013.
Application Log:
Server TCP provider failed to listen on [ 'any' <ipv4> 0]. Tcp port is already in use.
TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x271d, status code 0xa.
TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x271d, status code 0x1.
Could not start the network library because of an internal error in the network library. To determine the cause, review the errors immediately preceding this one in the error log.
SQL Server could not spawn FRunCM thread. Check the SQL Server error log and the Windows event logs for information about possible related problems.
If I change back to Local Connections Only or Local and Remote using named pipes only, the service starts up again without a problem.
After five days of investigating, researching, reinstalling and waiting I have to ask for help.
Any suggestions or leads?

We are using the whole BI-package from Microsoft - from SQL, DTS-package,Raporting Service and Analyze Service.
It should be very helpful to be able to create a metadata databases where you could find all releations between different objects (tables,views,reports,cubes,DTS-package,Databases.
Just to get answer for: 'where is view xxx used', 'what are Report xxx depending upon'.
While everything exists in different SQL databases it should possible to do.
Has anyone any comments or the same needs ?

I have a initiator and a target service broker peer.
Both are controlled by a C# unit test. The initiator uses the Microsoft.Samples.SqlServer class. The target service uses stored procedure activation.
Sending a message from the initiator to the target, saves the content of the message, along with its conversation handle in the target's database specific table.
The unit test needs - at a later time - to instruct the target to send a message back on the same conversation handle to the initiator service.
For this the C# unit test creates a Conversation off of the saved conversation handle:

dialog = new Conversation(client, convHandle);
Sending the message on this dialog generates an error "Message body: <Error xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/Error"><Code>-8495</Code><Description>The conversation has already been acknowledged by another instance of this service.</Description></Error>".
Is the error due to the fact that a service - using the activated stored procedure already picked up the conversation, so that a new reference to the service can not be created through the Service class in CLR?
If so, I might need then to skip the activated stored procedure in favor or a CLR service, alltogether?

Hi All,
We seem to be being plagued by the error below by our SQL Server agent. This happens almost everytime we restart the server that has been running for a day or two.
Our SQL Server Agent uses a none expiring domain credential. I understand that this problem only happens when the profile being used by the SQL Servr Agent has changed (password change). What puzzles me is that the login is A ok and no changes has been made to it's password.
We always resolve this problem by changing the login used in the SQL Server Agent to local and after that, returning it back to it's original domain login. Unfortunately, we cant always do this everytime something goes wrong.
Can anyone please help us shed a light on this? We're using SQL2k with SP3a. Thanks!

I am trying to send a message between to SQL Server 2005 instances on two different machines. I have checked all my routes and all my objects appear to be setup correctly. I have configured an instance to use static port, say 1435, and I turned off the Browser service.
I would like to know if I can use SSMSE to connect to the instance database directly. The instance is listening at port 1435 and accepting connection requests from other methods.
What I need to put into the "Server name: " field?
Normally, it would be like: <serverIP><InstanceID> with Browser turned on.
Now how do I add the port information to it, I tried

None of them worked.

All,
I am looking at implementing some sort of throttling whereby "expensive" reports are setup as Subscriptions (and hence are run by the Windows Service), while all other requests go the Web Service.
My question is:
Do the two systems share any underlying systems? I understand (of course) that they use the same DB, etc. etc. However, I can't quite tell whether there is an underlying engine that is a common base or if they really just spin up different instances of the same objects and essentially each host the application separately?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am currently hardening our SQL 2012 (with AlwaysOn Availability Groups) environment. Both the SQL service and agent account are using service accounts (only domain user). SQL browser service is disabled. Permissions to all roles are handled by using domain groups.
Currently a lot of (default) NT Service accounts are listed (some with sysadmin privileges). Are there accounts that can be removed?

I do understand that it is highly recomended to have aserprate user (perfered a domain user account) for each of the SQL Server service and SQL Agent service.
What is the reason behind that? (Someone told me to not run the service with an account that has a powerul privilegs! - I don't undrstanmd this point can you explain it please?)

Hello,
In our project, we would like to use the same data source for our analysis service database cubes and for our reporting service reports.
I created the analysis service project first, deployed successfully. When trying to setting up the data source in the report model project, I selected the "create a data source based on another object", and then selected the "create a data source based on an analysis service project". However, there is no analysis service project to select, and no browse button to see where the reporting service is looking for analysis service project either.
I have tried creating a new analysis service project with data source views, cubes, dimensions and all the stuff, but still cannot see the analysis service project in the drop down box to be selected for my reporting model project data source.
As I am fairly new to the reporting service, I'm sure I'm missing something, but couldn't find much information in the help or on the web. Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

In my web application, I need to send reminders to a list of persons in that database to fill out a form , once in every month.
Suppose a person have not filled the form, then agaian afetr 15 days need to send a reminder only to him . And if he doesnt fill it again I need to sned another reminder after 10 days . ...
In one word .. i need to snooze that person who have not complted the form continously and the end of month, even if doesn't complete, I need to tell him tto contact the Admin.
How should I do it in my application. ?
How to schedule a task periodically???

I have developed a B2B Application which is successfully running, now the problem is that my client says that he need a process which sends report of total orders on daily bases.
I am using SQL Server and think that SQL Mail is a good idea, I can find many articles about which needs Outlook for that which is much difficult on the web server. Remember I need to send email only not to receive.

I am having a problem with SqlServer 7.0 sending mail when the sqlserver account is not logged into the machine and mail is open. If I log off of the box and an alert sends mail it just sits in the outbox of the mail client until I log in. Is this the way it is supposed to be or am I doing something wrong. I am using the Inbox as my client.
