Services (Mssql, Sql Server Agent)

Oct 19, 2000

First I created an NT account " xyz " and gave it an admin right. then,
I opened Control panel/service tab, selected Mssqlserver and clicked on startup botton. I choose log On as This account and I selected xyz account from Win NT . Once I selected the account I run "start the service."

I did the same thing with the SqlServerAgent, and MSDTC.

Here is my question.

What if I am the Admin person and I use my logname and password in these services. What is the impact in doing so. Or it is better to designate one account (xyz) for these services and not use the account else where.

Another Question is that when I start the service and open the enterprise manager, Do I need to add xzy account in the security tab of enterprise manager and assign server roles to xyz account. What do I gain in doing so and what do I not gain if NOT doing so.

I do not know the answer, If you do have insight in this please let me know

thanks

Ahamed

Integration Services :: Parameter Passing From Server Agent

Jun 12, 2015

I'm calling the SSIS  packages through SQL agent job. The packages have variables defined with default values. The parent packages have no package configuration. The child packages have package configuration of ‘Parent Package variable’ type The variables are being passed from the job. The job calls the parent package which loops though the child packages. I would like to know how the variables traverse through the packages and the jobs?

Another doubt not related to above. I am unable to make any changes to the connections. Whatever changes I make it is getting reverted to the original if I click elsewhere. So as a workaround I view the code in XML and change.

Can't Run Integration Services Package As A Sql Server Agent Task

Aug 21, 2007

Hi guys, I 've been trying to run an integration services package as server agent scheduled task so that I dont have to manually execute the package every 2 hours. I was following how to guide in msdn to set up a server agant task for integration services package but I'm kind a lost. First of all when I ran the Management Studio and connected to the integration services the server agent does not show up it only shows me runing and stored packages. I can access to the server agent when I connect to the database engine but when I create a task and try to add a step to open a integration services package it does not give me the choice in type box. I couldn't figure out the problem. Is there a way to enable server agent to run under integration services too (not just under database engine) if databse engine is the only place server agents works , why dont I see the option to open a ssis package at adding a step to tasks? or is there a way to automate the process to run the package automatically without using the server agent at all?

Thanks,
Burak

PS I was following the http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms139805.aspx article

Execute Sql Server Agent Job Task - Job Immediately Returns Success... However Agent Job Is Still Running???

DTExec: The package execution returned DTSER_SUCCESS (0).
Started: 3:37:41 PM
Finished: 3:37:43 PM

However the Job is still in th agent and the status is executing. The implications of this are not good. Is this how the sql server agent job task is supposed to work by design.

Best Way To Delete Reporting Services Jobs Out Of SQL Agent?

Oct 2, 2007

Our users tend to generate a lot of one-time reports through Reporting Services. The problem is that this seems to generate a lot of Jobs in SQL Agent. So many, in fact, that we'd like to set up a job to delete them periodically (nightly or weekly). I could go in & delete them through SS Management Studio but I'd like to manage it automatically. Let me state up front that I have limited experience with Reporting Services so if my questions seem basic, forgive me.

First, is there a way to avoid creating a SQL Agent job if this is a non-scheduled report? That would be optimal then there would be nothing to clean up.

Barring that, what's the "Best Practice" for doing this automatically? I found the jobs listed in msdb.dbo.sysjobs and other sysjob* tables. Is it reasonable for me to delete from these various tables (sysjobs, sysjobactivity, sysjobhistory, sysjobschedules, sysjobsteps, & sysjobstepslogs) if the job was generated by reporting services (i.e. sysjobs.description containing 'report server process') and no schedule exists (i.e. sysjobactivity.next_scheduled_run_date IS NULL)? What damage could this cause? Is there anything else I need to take into account?

Thanks,
Pat Brickson

Integration Services :: How To Embed SSIS Package Password In Job Agent

Jun 14, 2011

I'm having a problem with saving a password in a SSIS package that is accessing an Oracle database as an external data source.  I experienced the problem that many people have had with the SSIS package not saving the Oracle password as expected.  I successfully saved the Oracle datasource password (Password #1) using the "Encrypt sensitive with password" security setting and then setting a separate/new password (Password #2) for the SSIS package.  I've imported this package into my Integration Services installation, and I can get it to run successfully by manually entering Password #2 when I open the package.

Now I want to pull the SSIS package into a SQL Job Agent, along with some other steps, to run on an automatic schedule.  My question -- how/where do I embed Password #2 (the one for the SSIS package) in the settings for the SQL Job Agent step that I use to run the SSIS package?  The SQL Job Agent step settings box prompts me for Password #2 before it will let me edit settings for the package, but it doesn't save that password.  So when I actually run the whole job, the SSIS package always fails.

Integration Services :: Source Excel File Causing Failure In Agent

Aug 13, 2015

I have a package from SQL Server 2008 R2, that loads data from .xlsx file to database table. There are total 15 columns and 14000 rows in the .xlsx. The package runs fine in BIDS. But the same package in SQL Agent fails with error "omponent "Excel Source" (1)" failed validation and returned validation status "VS_ISBROKEN".

When I tried to run the package by deleting the half of the records for first 7000 rows it ran successfully in agent. Then the second half (last 7000 rows) also succeed from agent job. So, there is no issue with the data/datatypes.The agent job is able to run with record upyo 11000 rows in .xlsx. When I am running for 12000 rows it is failing. Is there any problem with the number of records in .xlsx or size through SQL Agent?

I am running the package from a Proxy account in sql agent job.

Integration Services :: SSIS Fails To Load Files From Network When Executed Via Agent (2008 R2 SP2)

Aug 5, 2014

I have a simple SSIS package that reads a flat file and copies it into a SQL Server table.

When the flat fiel is on the C drive I have no problem runnign this package from SQL Server Agent, but as soon as I update the path to a network location the package only works when I run it manually, but fails when is executed via the SQL Server agent job.

The error says "cannot open the datafile", while the datafile location is valid.

Is this a kind of limitation of a SQL Server Agent that only local files are allowed to be processed?

Creating Index In MSSQL 2000 From MSSQL 2005

Mar 24, 2008

Hi,

I am a bit new to the MSSQL server. In our application, we use so many SQL queries. To imporve the performance, we used the Database enigine Tuning tool to create the indexes. The older version of the application supports MSSQL 2000 also. To re-create these new indexes, I have an issue in running these "CREATE INDEX" commands as the statements generated for index creation are done in MSSQL 2005. The statements include "INCLUDES" keyword which is supported in MSSQL 2005 but not in MSSQL 2000.

Ex:-

CREATE INDEX IND_001_PPM_PA ON PPM_PROCESS_ACTIVITY

(ACTIVITY_NAME ASC, PROCESS_NAME ASC, START_TIME ASC, ISMONITORED ASC)

INCLUDE

(INSTANCE_ID, ACTIVITY_TYPE, STATUS, END_TIME, ORGANIZATION);

Any help in creating such indexes in 2000 version is welcome.

Thanks,
Suresh.

Migration MSSQL 2000 32-bit To MSSQL 2005 64-bit

Nov 17, 2007

I've been tasked to move our production databases on MSSQL 2000 to 2005. I've supported MSSQL since version 6.5 and performed migrations to successor versions.

Current Environment is MSSQL 2000 32-bit with current Service Packs.

I've performed mock migrations on Test servers upgrading all Production instances simultaneously from MSSQL 2000 to 2005 32-bit. The Test environment is identical to Production minus server name, IP etc. Also I have a separate server with MSSQL 2005 installed where I use the DETACH / ATTACH and BACKUP / RESTORE method for migration / acceptance testing. There are approximately 30 databases totaling 70 GB. This has gone as expected and fairly successful. Vendors have been coordinated with to update code and staff for acceptance testing.

I'd prefer going directly to MSSQL 2005 64-bit instead if possible due to memory benefits etc. This is where I'd like some feedback prior to borrowing a 64-bit server for testing.

Upgrade options:

1. Is it better to migrate from MSSQL 2000 32-bit to 2005 64-bit via:
a. DETACH / ATTACH
b. BACKUP / RESTORE
c. Is one method more advantageous relating to the end result?
2. Regarding XP clients, have issues been experienced with the default SQL Server driver or is an alternate recommended for XP clients to connect to a MSSQL 64-bit server databases?
3. If you have performed this migration and have relevant experience please pass them along.

Snapshot Agent && Log Reader Agent Will Not Start.

Hi All,

I would appreciate any help here at all. I am pulling my hair out!

I am unable to start the snapshot agent or log reader agent from within SQL management studio. it fails on executing step 2 with unknown username or bad password.

I have checked all account details and they are correctly using my domain admin account. I can connect to SQL using teh same account and it also has sysadmin permissions.

If i copy the step 2 paramters and start from the cmd prompt (again logged in using the same domain account) they both start fine.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Is there a difference with sql replication between sql server 2005 64bit and sql server 2005 32bit?
Both are on a Windows 2003 server. One is 32 bit and the other one is 64 bit.

The second time I wanted to set up replication (live environment), it was on a 64 bit sql server. This didn't worked fine.

I can't call the sqlcesa30.dll file on the 64bit server with IIS. So I called the dll via a remote IIS server.
