Setting Up DotNetNuke Am Getting 18456 Login Failure
Feb 20, 2006
I am running Windows server 2003, IIS 6.0, and SQL Server 2005. I am trying to set up dotnetnuke to run on the same machine as both these servers and I am running into an error that the dotnetnuke forum has not been able to help me with. I have set up a user called dnnuser in my windows authentication domain, and have added the user to SQL and given them ownershhip of my new dotnetnuke database. Howeever, when I try to start up DotNetNuke in my browser on the local machine I get a failure to log in. The first messages in theSQL Server log is "Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 6" then I get "Login failed for user 'DSD-WINdnnuser'. [CLIENT: <local machine>]" Then the next two lines in the log are "Login succeeded for user 'DSD-WINdnnuser'. Connection: trusted. [CLIENT: <local machine>]" and then "Login succeeded for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'. Connection: trusted. [CLIENT: <local machine>]".
What would cause the server to reject the login once and then immediately accept it?
I then try to run the same app from the client computer, it gives me:
Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'.
After looking up the web for solution, I found that I can test the connection from the HOST computer in this way:
C:Documents and Settingskit>sqlcmd -E -S laptopsqlexpress 1> 2>
The test is successful
Now I run the same command on the CLIENT computer
C:Documents and SettingsKit>sqlcmd -E -S laptopsqlexpress Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Server LAPTOPSQLEXPRESS, Line 1 Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'.
Now I can sure that from the client computer it cannot make a connection to it, then I look at the errorLog from my host computer
2006-08-13 21:41:00.34 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2006-08-13 21:41:00.34 Logon Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'. [CLIENT: 192.168.0.5] 2006-08-13 21:45:10.64 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2006-08-13 21:45:10.64 Logon Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'. [CLIENT: 192.168.0.5] 2006-08-13 21:48:41.80 Logon Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. 2006-08-13 21:48:41.80 Logon Login failed for user 'LAPTOPGuest'. [CLIENT: 192.168.0.5]
Now I know it is actually Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11.

Valid login but server access failure
It tells the connection string and SQL Express seem to be set up properly but the server access failed the remote connection
I have previously had SQL Server 2000 installed. I uninstalled SQL 2000 before I install SQL express but somehow the SQL Server Service Manager is still running at startup, and C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server80 and its files are still exist after uninstallation..... Could this be a problem?
The Knowledge base suggestion on "enabling remote connection" is very simple and I do not understand why it is so difficult to me just to make a remote connection test work..... please, I need your help.
Recently, one of my clients began receiving this error. My team gave them sysadmin permissions, but this is terrible practice. I have read into disablying simple file sharing, but I don't even think I have the option to do it. I look in mycomputer > tools > view and don't see any option for this. Besides, the problem just started occuring recently, within the last week. The server is a cluster with veritas clustering and the edition is sql server 2000. Has anybody ever had a problem like this and have a good fix? Thanks for any help in advance... -Kyle
I wanted to check the asymmetric key option in sql 2005. I copied the books online code for creating a asymmetric key and then used this key for creating a login. Now when I try to login without entering any password I am receiving 18456 error. I would like to know what I am missing here. If I use CREATE LOGIN from asymmetric key or certificate how do I login and with what credentials. Do I need to provide any password.CREATE ASYMMETRIC KEY PacificSales09 WITH ALGORITHM = RSA_2048 ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'bmsA$dk7i82bv55foajsd9764'; GO
CREATE LOGIN asm FROM ASYMMETRIC KEY PacificSales09;
We occasionally get the error Login Failure for 'Admin' (client: then IP address). The SQL 2005 server is set up to use windows authentication and no one uses an account called Admin. The people here use their windows logon to access the database. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I am using the Configure Publishing and Distribution Wizard in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager to configure a server as a Distribution and Publishing server. The security configuration on the server in question for authentication is SQL Server and Windows NT.
When I get to the first page in the wizard I select that I want to use the server as the Distributor. The other option is to use another server for the Distribution server - and this isn't what I want to do. The next page presents the option to use the default settings to configure the distribution databases or to configure the setup. If I select the default options I get the following error message when the arrow is pointing to Configuring Distributor:
---------------------------------------------- SQL Server Enterprise Manager could not configure 'SERVER1' as the Distributor for
'SERVER1'.
Error 18456: Login failed for user 'sa'. Remote logins for remote server 'repl_distributor' have been dropped. Server dropped. Server added. Server network name set.
----------------------------------------------
Something I have tried to change in order to fix this issue is the 'Replication agents on the Distributor log into the Publisher:' option from its default (By impersontating the SQL Agent account on 'SERVER1' (trusted connection)) to 'Using SQL Server Authentication of this account:', and in those fields I have put in 'sa' (which is a valid admin account to the SQL server) and the correct password.
In all cases I get the message above. Can anyone help me to see what I am doing wrong?
I get this error when trying to connect. I'm using the sa id and password for all of my odbc connections. It fails when trying to connect to this one but it's ok on a couple of others I've set up with the same id etc. Where is this "" coming from and how to avoid it in the future?
I've removed and recreated the connection to be sure that I didn't actually type that in as the id....hey it's monday...it could happen.
I am running several instances of SQL Server 2005 sp2 on a W2k3 sp2 box (member server).
This morning, I installed reporting services to one of my instances and shortly after noticed I was getting the following two messages in my SQL Server log file:-
08/08/2007 11:05:03,Logon,Unknown,Login failed for user 'DOMAINDOMCONTROLLER$'. [CLIENT: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] 08/08/2007 11:05:03,Logon,Unknown,Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16.
The above entries were each repeated 6 times every 15 minutes but with State 11. I created a logon for the above, and now get the above messages (state 16) repeated 3 times every 15 minutes!
Hi, I have just installed Windows Vista and SQL Server 2005. When I try to connect to my local server with Windows Authentication, I get the follwoing message:
Login failed for user <user> (Microsoft SQL Server, error: 18456)
Last night I setup my MOSS 2007 server and SQL 2005, I got everything working fine in short order.
I had forgotten to look for updates for SQL 2005 so i decided I would run Windows Update.
SQL Server 2005 Critical Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB 934458)
Tuesday, March 04, 2008 Microsoft Update
SQL Server 2005 Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB 921896)
Those two updates were applied, then after a reboot I began getting the login failed error.
I can login using windows authentication as DOMAINAdministrator, I can also login as SA, but i am trying to figure out why it is denying me logins as DOMAINSharepoint
Has anybody had prior experience with this or know what the deal is?
SQL2000 SP4 (SQL and Windows authentication) on Win2000SP4. Event ID 17055 (18456: Login failed for user 'sa'.) is being logged at an average of 20 times an hour. Tried to run SQL Profiler but it no trace information on the source (host, ip or application) of the failed login. Some forums suggest to unplug the server from network to know if its a local or networked issue but this is not possible in my case. Acquiring firewall/router logs from Network team is a headache. Any help on pinpointing what/where is this failed login coming from is very much appreciated.
I recently attempted to change the password of the sa login. There were no issues while updating the password neither did I get an error when I logged in as sa. Everything appeared to connect and I was able to query a database. However, an error was logged (error 18456 severity 14 state 8) as though I did not log in successfully. Even though I can connect successfully, I don't like having these misleading errors in the SQL Server Log.
I get this error when I try to connect to my SQL Server with JDBC:
Excepcion en MyPool Pool.getNewConnection() [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC][SQLServer]Cannot open database "lituania" requested by the login. The login failed.
A user is trying to connect to a server via windows authentication from SQL management studio on her desktop.
The log file on the server gives: Login failed for user: domain1user1 Error : 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11
The strange thing is that the user in the error above is not the user she's trying to connect as (domain2user2, say). user2 can remote desktop to the server and log in there.
I know this state implies "Valid login but server access failure".
Has anyone run into this, and what more information would be useful to know? Thanks!
I just upgraded SQL Server 2000 to 2005 without any errors. Afterwards, I tried registering with sa and it failed. I registered with another sysadmin login to get into most of my databases, but I need sa to work for my backup software Idera SQLSafe to login to the database.
Does anyone have any experience or recommendations? I know my password is correct.
can someone help me with this error. Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16 Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM' [CLIENT:<local machine>] I've found several Threads but not with the NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM.
Please help I keep getting this message when I log on to my data base. Not sure what state 1 relates too

hi, i am getting the following error message while i am trying to login to the SQL Server 2005 on my vista laptop. i installed the server with dual authentication modes.
Login failed for the user'xxxx'(Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Error:18456)
if you have solution for my problem please send a reply as early as possible.
I created a package wide OnError event handler with the following script:
Imports System
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Math
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime
Public Class ScriptMain
' The execution engine calls this method when the task executes.
' To access the object model, use the Dts object. Connections, variables, events,
' and logging features are available as static members of the Dts class.
' Before returning from this method, set the value of Dts.TaskResult to indicate success or failure.
'
' To open Code and Text Editor Help, press F1.
' To open Object Browser, press Ctrl+Alt+J.
Public Sub Main()
'
Dts.Variables("FailureFlag").Value = True
'
Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success
End Sub
End Class
I ran the package with an error and set a break on error condition. When I looked at the value of "FailureFlag" it was False. Any ideas why it is not being set?
I have a post execute event that is supposed to rollback from a snapshot on failure and it is not doing so on failure so I'm trying to figure out what's wrong.
I'm sort of a .net, php, dotnetnuke, sql newbie so bare with me if i'm leaving any important information out of this post...
I am trying to install DotNetNuke on my localhost and I have no idea how to get the installation to connect to my sql server.
I'm running Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2) I have IIS installed with the .net 1.1 i'm more than sure i installed 2.0 but i read somewhere the DNN works on both.
the error i'm getting is ...
Error Installing DotNetNuke Current Assembly Version: 04.03.04 ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider
I am new to asp.net 2.0, although I have some experience with asp.net 1.1. In my new machine I have VS 2005, SQL Server 2000 and Sql Server 2005 installed. I wanted to connect to a database in SqlServer 2000 from a simple asp.net 2.0 project. I used the following connection string: string strConn = "Data Source=xyz/abc;Initial Catalog=dbname;UID=abc;PWD=efg;"; xyz/abc is the name displyed in the enterprise manager, under SQLServer Group. When I run the app, I am getting the following error: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) The error indicates that it is trying to connect to SQL Server 2005, although my xyz/abc is a SqlServer 2000 instance. Not sure how to force the connection to the SqlServer 2000 database. Thanks
Hello Everyone and thanks for your help in advance. I have set up a new installation of SQL Server 2005 and VS 2005. I am trying to get some web applications up and working, but am experiencing problems with the database connection. I am tring to use the the sa account to connect, but am receiving the error "Login for user 'sa' failed. Not associated with at trusted account...". I am familiar with this error and have made sure that the SQL Server is using SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode. The connection string I am passing to it is: server=(local);uid=sa;pwd=password;database=Northwind which I believe is correct. So I'm confused as to what the problem is. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am running sql server 7, since friday my users are not unable to access their database on the server. NT group authentication is the mode of accessing the data on the server, the temporary soluton I have found so far is to create individual login. Which means creating login for every user on the network. NT4 Group membership that has always worked no longer functions.
Hi experts, my server was having windows as well as sql login authentication. Once i checked the deny access for BUILTAdministrators . . I'am unable to login as SA and also I'am also unable to change that check as well. . .any solutions in this regard will be appreciated
Hello , this is my first posting in this group.I am running SQL server 2000 on my windows 2000 server box. I use itfor my Siebel database. When ever I launch Query Analyzer and chose SQL Server AuthenticationI get the error message below:[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server driver][SQL Server]Login failure "SA" Not associated with a trusted SQL serverconnection. The funny thing is that if I use Windows Authentication the loginworks.I checked Enterprise Manager and the SA account is present.Any help appreciated .SQL newbieThanks.
There have been other similar posts, but this is my issue: I have set up database mirroring with a witness, and failover works properly. I have also installed the login id's and their original SID's onto the mirror server. When I run a Reporting Services report against the primary database, it runs properly. When I failover to the mirror server and run the report again, I get a "login failed for user" error. As I have already said, the SQL login that the Reporting Services report uses was installed on the mirror server with the original SID. Any ideas as to what else might be wrong?
I have the default instance of sql server (2005 express) installed on my machine. I can log on with no problems using the windows authentication but I had to create a new login account with a username and password.
I have added the new user using the Management Studio under the Security>Logins folder. I have assigned this new user has a server role of sysadmin and I have mapped the user as the db_owner of each current database on the server (default system db's). When I try to connect to this server (keeping in mind it works fine with the windows account) using sql server Authentication and the new username and password, I get an error that says "Login failed for user 'WblsUser'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)"
There seem to be lots of posts regarding this issue but I was surprised that it should happen when you use the management studio as apposed to a connection string in an application (where the connection string could be typed incorrectly).
I have checked that the protocols for TCP/IP, Named Pipes and Shared Memory are all enabled for both the server and the client.
Hello, I have a windows 2003 standard 64 bit, dedicated server. I was having issues getting Dot Net nuke installed. SO I hired a consultant to install DNN for me. He was able to get DNN install on the local machine in the default folder (for some reason). Anyways, after we got DNN to start Plesk wouldn't.
This is what we did to get DNN to work.
1.Re-installed ASP.NET 2.0 64 bit (fx64) (this did not work) 2.Stopped Plesk panel service (did not help) 3.Re-installed IIs(this seemed to work)
Well, presently I have a box that I have un-installed Plesk, Un-installed SQL server 2000. But, I left SQL server 2005 express running.
I guess my question is. What do I do to make these all work ?
I would like a guest to view some items on the application.
And I recently intalled SQL Server 2000 on my machine. Will integrate Access when ready.
I can access or simply read data from a db if I specify User ID and Password.
Such as....
Dim nwindConn As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=localhost;User Id=sa;Password=xxxxx;Initial Catalog=Northwind;")
Yes, testing first, then adjusting all my code for the SQL instead of Access.
If I leave the id and pw out, it won't read - login failure. I have read so much on authentication and some posts here, even the one on login failure, but that didn't help.
Keep in mind, just installed, only users are the default ones by the installation.
What setting in the SQL Server is there, and I have looked, that if it's a guest, no id or pw, allow read only to items such as datagrids which only read from tables?
HelloI have just completed the first part of my first intranet project, using MS Access. Next step is to transfer it to SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 2003 Server. The ASP.NET code resides on an XP workstation.I get this error: "Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.".The connection string:Dim DbConn As New SQLConnection("Server=RDDSRV1; DataBase=Serialnrs; Integrated Security=SSPI").I have also tried the same string, with user id and password for a domain adminstrator. No difference. The database has Windows security with among others ASPNET as user (login?)I have searched throu the my own litterature and this Forum, but can´t find any answer to my problems.Hope I can get a quick anwer.Rolf Dahlström
