Setting Up Isolated Multi-Tenant Database

Sep 16, 2015

I have a several questions with regards to setting up a server to cater for multi tenant database.

I have a requirement to host 100 isolated databases for the purpose of multi user environment where each user has it's own database. This is due to security restrictions that why it was requested to be such.

1. What I'm recommending is to setup servers with 256GB of RAM to host multiple databases. Are there servers which can accomodate 256GB? Is this optimal with regards to performance? Or should I break it down to smaller servers with less RAM?

2. Is there a way to determine the CPU requirements for the DB server, taking for example we have 20 databases per DB instance? Are there any best practices / calculators available?

3. Additionally, data from the 100 DB's needs to be consolidated into 1 central repository for Analytics purposes. What I'm looking at is to utilize SQL Server transaction replication. Is there any drawback with this approach? Are there any other approach we could use to easily replicate data across 100 database back to 1 central repository?

Multiple Databses For Multi-tenant ASP Application

Mar 28, 2007

Hello all,
I am working on an ASP.NET that different companies will be loggin on to. The way the SQL db has been written is that each company will have it's own database. However, I am not sure if this is the right approach since modifying the database would be quite a hassle (i'd have to modify each one). Is there a way a single databse would have several instances that share the same structure but with different data ?
What is the recommended approach in these situations ? Should I re-design the database so that ALL companies store their data in one huge database ?

Database Design Question - Isolated, Unrelated Tables

Jun 25, 2007

Hi,I have a question regarding best practices in database design. In arelational database, is it wise/necessary to sometimes create tablesthat are not related to other tables through a foreign Keyrelationship or does this always indicate some sort of underlyingdesign flaw. Something that requires a re evaluation of the problemdomain?The reason I ask is because in our application, the user can perform xnumber of high level operations (creating/updating projects, creating/answering surveys etc. etc.). Different users can perform differentoperations and each operation can manipulate one or more table. Thispart of the system is done and working. Now there is a requirement tohave some sort of audit logging inside the database (separate from thetext based log file that the application generates anyway). This"audit logging" table will contain high level events that occur insidethe application (which may or may not relate to a particularoperation). This table is in some sense related to every other tablein the database, as well as data that is not in the database itself(exceptions, external events etc.). For example : it might haveentries that specify that at time x user created project y, at time Auser filled out survey B, at time C LDAP server was down, At time D anunauthorized login attempt occurred etc.As I said, these seems to suggest a stand alone, floating table with afew fields that store entries regarding whats going on the systemwithout any direct relationship to other tables in the database. But Ijust feel uneasy about creating such an isolated table. Another optionis to store the "logging" information in another schema/database, butthat doubles the maintainance work load. Not really looking forward tomaintaining/designing two different schemas.I had a look at the microsoft adventureworks database schema diagramand they seem to have 3 standalong tables - AWBuildVersion, ErrorLogand DatabaseLog (unless i am reading it wrong!)Any advice, Information or resources are much appreciated.

Setting Multi-value Parameters Using ReportExecutionService

Apr 24, 2007

Does anyone know how to set multi-value parameters using ReportExecutionService in C#?

If I have

rsExec = new ReportExecutionService2005.ReportExecutionService();

.

.

.

ReportExecutionService2005.ParameterValue[] parameters = new ReportExecutionService2005.ParameterValue[2];

parameters[0] = new ReportExecutionService2005.ParameterValue();

parameters[0].Label = "Report_Begin_Date";

parameters[0].Name = "Report_Begin_Date";

parameters[0].Value = "4/15/2007";

parameters[1] = new ReportExecutionService2005.ParameterValue();

parameters[1].Label = "SalesID";

parameters[1].Name = "SalesID";

parameters[1].Value = ??? //Here, this parameter should accept multiple values like 200, 201, 202, etc.

rsExec.SetExecutionParameters(parameters, "en-us");

How would I set the SalesID to take multiple values?

Setting Defaults On A Multi-valued Parameter

Jan 27, 2006

I want to set defaults for my multi-valued report parameter MONTH so that when the report starts, it automatically selects all the months prior to the current month (effectively creates a YTD report). However, using RS2005, I can't seem to figure out how to do this. I can create an IIF expression in 12 different value entries in the report parameters that returns the month based on the system date, but the first time I pass blanks, null or anything except a valid parameter, it clears the entire parameter list when the report displays.

Does anyone have any suggestions for auto-populating multiple values in a parameter at runtime where one or more of the parameter values may be empty? Checking "Allow Null" or "Allow Blank" doesn't fix this problem.

I tried to pass all the values in a single value entry on the report parameters page, but can't find the syntax that will allow this. I'm not sure if it will let you do that anyway...

SQL 2012 :: Disaster Recovery Options For Multi-Database Multi-Instance Environment

Sep 23, 2014

Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.

--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition
--We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately
--Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic
-- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.

What I have looked into is:

1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable
2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances
3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.

How To Pull Isolated Data From Two Tables?

Apr 23, 2006

Hi, I am trying to pull e-mail addresses of certain users from a list of all the users in our company. I have two tables. One contains a single column of only the users I need. The other table contains every user and their e-mail address. Could someone tell me how to pull this data from these two tables. I am new to SQL Query and have been trying to figure out these JOIN statements, but nothing I am doing seems to work.

Thank you,

Multi-database Multi-server

Mar 27, 2007

I am new to Reporting Services and hope that what I am looking to do is within capabilities :-)

I have many identical schema databases residing on a number of data servers. These support individual clients accessing them via a web interface. What I need to be able to do is run reports across all of the databases. So the layout is:

Dataserver A

Database A1

Database A2

Database A3

Dataserver B

Database B1

Database B2

Dataserver C

Database C1

Database C2

Database C3

I would like to run a report that pulls table data from A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, C2, C3

Now the actual number of servers is 7 and the number of databases is close to 1000. All servers are running SQL2005.

Is this something that Reporting Services is able to handle or do I need to look at some other solution?

Thanks,

Michael

Running Packages In Parallel And Isolated (like A Sepearte Instance)

Feb 2, 2007

I'm a bit confused about how ssis handles concurrent package runs

let's say I'm running this package and I 've got 3 variables set in it
VARA
VARB
VARC
and by default they are all set to 0
if I run

dtexec /File "C:ControlRoom.dtsx" /SET PackageVersion_Builder.Variables[VARA].Value;1
dtexec /File "C:ControlRoom.dtsx" /SET PackageVersion_Builder.Variables[VARB].Value;1
dtexec /File "C:ControlRoom.dtsx" /SET PackageVersion_Builder.Variables[VARC].Value;1

I'm expecting to run 3 isloated version of the package with in
first version
VARA=1
VARB=0
VARC=0
second version
VARA=0
VARB=1
VARC=0
third version
VARA=0
VARB=0
VARC=1
but it doesn't seem like doing that the maxconcurrent variable is set to 40 to be on the safe side.

when I run I get

first version
VARA=1
VARB=0
VARC=0
second version
VARA=1
VARB=1
VARC=0
third version
VARA=0
VARB=1
VARC=1

any ideas?
Thanks

Setting Up SQL Database

Apr 7, 2007

I have been using MySQL as the back end of my .Net 2.0 applications for a while using a custom membership provider without any problems.Having now switched to a new webhost which supports both MySQL and MS SQL Server 2005 and also creating a new site thought I should set up the new site to use MS SQL..... I am having trouble however setting up the SQL server to act as the membership provider. Following the advice on here I tried using aspnet_regsql.exe...  Firstly, when trying to get the list of databasses on the remote server I get the following error: Failed to query a list of database names from the SQL Server. Invalid object name 'Sysdatabases' If I then just type in the name of my database and go through to the end I get the following error:Exception:An error occurred during the execution of the SQL file 'InstallCommon.sql'. The SQL error number is 8152 and the SqlException message is: String or binary data would be truncated.   I can connect to my MS SQL server remotely without any problem using the likes of MS SQL Server Management Studio Express. Is there any other way I can setup the databases needed for user and roles access control or is the usage of MS SQL much more complicated than what MySQL was?

I'm in the process of trying to set up my first SQL Server database and things aren't going as per the book! (surprise, surprise).

The 'Identity Specification' option during Table creation, is 'greyed out' and won't let me set (Is Identity) to 'Yes' or anything else for that matter.

I guess that there's a simple answer to this one, but as a newbie to SQL Server ( and VB 2005) I'm curently at a loss.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

2) Should DTC be in its own resource group or within the instance's group?
2a) If in it's own resource group, how do you tie an instance to an outside resource group? tmMappingSet right?

Multi Server/Database Nightmare

Jul 4, 2007

We have a setup with a web server and multiple databases, and a live, stage, and dev environment. We use SQL Server standard 2005 and use the ASP.NET ReportView control. I have spent countless hours now trying to get this to work and am about to give this up and go back to Crystal.

First I wanted a report that would work from dev to stage to live without modification, so we set up shared data sources on each environment to point to the appropriate database. No problem, I can publish it to each environment and it works, though sometimes I have to go into Report Manager and fix the data source.

Next I wanted to be able to work with multiple databases, identical in structure. For this we did a hidden parameter with the database name and used a formula for the query string. This works pretty well.

Next I wanted to be able to run against multiple database servers from a single web server. This has been nearly impossible. I've read a million posts about this, and nothing seems to work well. I've tried a dynamic connection string, and passing the server in as a parameter, but this doesn't work, because I can't get the credentials set on the ReportViewer.ServerReport, so it doesn't work from dev to stage. You can't programatically change the shared data source - that would make it too easy. Linked servers are not an option.

I guess I need to either publish a copy of the report for each database server, or set up an instance of SQL on the web server for each database server.

Any other reasonable options out there. I just can't imagine my setup is all that unique.

Does anybody have a solution for this?

Multi-User Access Of SQL Database

Sep 11, 2007

Please help....
I have designed an application that uses sql server 2005 express database. This application was intended to be installed and used on a local desktop machine. However, now this application needs to be also installed on several computers and still needs to use only 1 database. Part of the database saves local user settings, so what I have done thus far is use two connection strings: one for local database (because the application may be used as origionally intended) and one for remote database that everyone should be able to connect to.

When I remotely connect to the database, it works fine. However, it seems to be locked so when I chose the same database for another user I get the error message "This File Is In Use." I need to know how to unlock it and make it usable for several users at the same time.

Thank you for your help! Please let me know if you need more information or if something is unclear in my description.

i know for a fact that the code is well written and there is no problem with the configuration of buttons and such, because i folowed the steps 50 times so I believe it must be a SQL configuration problem.

Setting Up Database On A New Server

Feb 23, 1999

Hi,

There has been a lot of discussion about moving single databases or devices in same server. Can someone suggest the most simplest method to set up a identical server with all the logins, permissions and password etc?

Building a new server with sp_help_revdatabase and dumps/loads is relatively easy but moving the master is confusing to me. I should run the new server and databases for a little testing period (with diffrent server name, of course) and then go live by dropping the old and by adding the new. I remember someone said that this would be as easy as copying master.dat to new machine (when servers are identical), any experience or other suggestions?

TIA,
Al

Connecting Without Setting Up A Database Possible?

Nov 28, 2007

Hello everyone, I am fairly new to SQL Server Express and I have a question I was hoping someone could help with. I know this will sound very wacky but please entertain the possibility of such scenario taking place...

Is it possible to connect to an instance of an SQL Server Express 2005, using asp, without having a database created and without configuring anything such as permits or users first ?

The SQL Server Express was installed on a PC that runs a web server as well but nothing else was done, I only have the instance name and I know the SQL Server is configured for local access only.

I was hoping to create a database and begin using it with an asp file that runs SQL commands I can input on a text window, but I can't find connection strings that work without specifying a database name, and also I don't know which user and password to use because it is set to windows authentication.

I thought the code would go something like this:

Set cn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cn.Open "Driver={SQL Server};Server=SQLinstance;Address=localhost,port;Database=;Uid=;Pwd="

To top things out the web server is configured to send out a generic error message, so I can't see what the error I'm getting actually is...

Any thoughts ?

Thanks.

Setting Up A Database Copy.

Mar 31, 2008

Hi all :-)

I am new to Sql server and hope that someone in here might be able to help me out with a little advice on how to go about how to achive the following.

My boss wants me to set up a copy of one of our production databases, the copy is supposed to be used for running questions against thru businessobjects. There will be aprox 10 simultanious users, the original and the copy must never be further apart in time then 15 min. The database is today about 25 gigs and to make it even more complicated the copy must be available at all time during business hours (8-17). The solution is also supposed not to influence the production databases perfommance to much (really low impact to the performance is a key issue).

The options I have thought of is:
1. Use mirroring and then take a snapshot of the mirror for the users to connect to.
2. Replicate only the data that is needed.
3. Log shipping in a combination with the online restore option in sql 2005 server.
4. Log shipping and then take a snapshot of the copy for the users to connect to.

I have also thought about if the need for current data is that high it might even be better to let them run their questions directly against the production db instead since there will not be so many simultanious users.

Any of you guys that have any ideas, all tips will be very appreciated!

Thanks in advance :-)
