Setting Up Linked Servers With SQL Server And Oracle
Jul 2, 2001
Does anyone know where I can get some good examples of how to set up a linked
server to an Oracle data source in SQL 2000? I can't seem to get a link
set up to my Oracle database. In particular I am wondering how the communication works between OLEDB to the Oracle Instance and how to trouble shoot issues (for example, would is the Oracle Listener what OLEDB is talking to?) Thanks!!

Hi!
I created linked server to Oracle 8.0.5 on ODBC data source. When I run query like:
select * from linked_server_name..Schema_name.Table_name
it hangs up
I read in Books Online that the syntax is:
linked_server_name.catalog.schema.object_name
What is the _catalog_?
And also, is there a way to run PASS THROUGH QUERY against linked server, but not using OPENQUERY?

Running SQL2000 on Win2000 server. Installed Oracle8 client from Oracle for Winnt CD. This appeared to install OK could use SQL*PLUS to link to Oracle servers. Setting up a Linked server and then doing an openquery
gave an error:
' msadora reported an error
ole/db returned a message Oracle client & networking component were not found ..'
Any ideas? Should we have a Oracle for Win 2000 CD. It worked for SQL2000 on Winnt server.

Hi--
I am running SQL Server 2005 on Win2k3:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.2047.00
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 2005.090.2047.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.086.1830.00 (srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.3790.1830
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42
Operating System 5.2.3790
I have the OraOLEDB.Oracle provider installed to the (C:oraclexe) directory.
I am having problems querying from linked oracle server. When i setup oracle as a linked server and purposely enter an incorrect password the query i run tells me i have an incorrect password. So it at least knows that. when i set the correct password and run a query I get this error:
(i replaced the real server name with "someServer".)
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "SomeServer" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "SomeServer".
This is how I set up my Linked server:
Provider: "Oracle Provider for OLE DB"
Product Name: SomeServer
Data Source: SomeServer
Provider String: "Provider=OraOLEDB.Oracle;Data Source=SomeServer;User Id=MyLogin;Password=MyPassword"
The query I run is:
Select * from [Someserver].[schema or database]..[tbl_name]
Any help??? What am i missing?

Greetings.
I have a setup/deployment question regarding SQL Server Encryption.
Internal database encrypts data in 3 different tables. This could execute on any one of 6 different servers.
The tables with encrypted data are replicated to another database on different servers (3)
How should the keys/certificates be created so that the data in the replicated database can be decrypted?
In my test scenario so far, I have been unable to have the second database decrypt the data that was encrypted on the first database (currently on the same server).
-- Create Database Master Key
CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY
PASSWORD = 'p@ssw0rd'
GO
-- Create Certificate
CREATE CERTIFICATE MyCertificate
WITH SUBJECT = 'My Data Encryption Certificate',
EXPIRY_DATE = '10/31/2010';
GO
CREATE SYMMETRIC KEY MyKey
WITH
ALGORITHM = AES_256,
IDENTITY_VALUE = 'My Symmetric Key',
KEY_SOURCE = 'Unique phrase that will be used to secure the key'
ENCRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE MyCertificate;

In Sql server if i have a varchar field of length 12, if i enter 12 chinese characters, it fails. In Oracle there is a setting nls_length_semantics.If you put char in nls_length_semantics , it takes 12 characters irrespective of english(one byte) or chinese(doublr byte).
Is there any similiar setting for Sql server?

I am trying to set up a linked server in MSSQL to an IBM AS400 using the IBM AS400 OLE DB Provider. The New Linked Server dialog box asks for properties Product Name and Data Source. I would like to know from someone who has successfully set up a linked server to an AS400 what the specific syntax in the properties needs to be. I have reviewed the OLB section on sp_addlinkedserver, and while this is helpful and gives many specific examples, I need an example for an AS400. Thank you to anyone who can help!

I'm working with SQL Server 2000 installed in Windows 2000. When i tried to add the 'servername' as a linked server , i got the following message:
" Error: 15038. The Server 'servername' already exists."
When i execute "sp_linkedservers" , i could see the name "servername" in the list. But before doing this i had Restored the "MSDB" database on this server. Should i use "sp_droplinkedservers" and add them again.
Any comments are most welcome.
Thanks, Santha.

I've set up a Linked server connection to a Windows 2003 server running MySql using SSL.
I can run SQL and T-SQL from the query window using the Server management studio on the
server, and everything is good.
As soon as I apply a trigger to a table on our local server running the same
script, I get a "linked server unable to begin a distributed transaction"
error.
I've google'ed my brains out on this error and tried both Mysql ODBC drivers
3.51 and 5.1 and keep getting the same error.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Tony T

Hi,
I have setup a linked server to a DB2 database using "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers",
the connections works fine i am able to run select queries.
but the number of rows returned from the two following statements are different.
select * from linkedserver...tablename
select count(*) from linkedserver...tablename
e.g. The First statement returns 116 rows, whereas the second query returns count as 144....
I am a bit confused ?????
could anybody think of any possible reasons..

Hi:
I configured SQL Server 7.0 by Linked Server to a Oracle db. What I found was I could select data from SQL Enterprise Manage but fail to insert any data through Query Analyst from SQL Server to Oracle. The platform for the SQL Server is NT 4.0 SP6.
Could you point out what I missed while inserting data from Query Analyst to Oracle?
Thank you very much.

Hi,I have an Oracle (8.1) & a SQL Server 2000 database withProduction data. There are situations when I need data from both thedatabases. My first choice was to link Oracle to SQL and run DTSovernight. But this would have a 1 day latency not to mention the timeit would take.1. Has any one tried real time access via Linked server to Oracle? How good is the performance?2. The Oracle db is fairly big, so I'm kinda not in favor ofcopying the whole thing over into SQL overnight. Is there an easierway to just get only the changed records from Oracle?3. Is there a better solution to this?4. Lastly, if I use OPENROWSET or OPENQUERY, can I dynamicallychange the SQL that you pass it? e.g. can the query accept aparameter? Thanks in advanceSudhesh

You can only use the OPENQUERY method to access data, etc.

We're having some trouble connecting SQL Srvr2005 to Oracle (10g) in our 64-bit environment. We have Oracle's 32-bit Ole Db provider installed and have been able to use that in SSIS to connect and return some data running in 32-bit debug mode (as long as the query isn't long, complicated or using parameters =)
However, we have some hefty queries that we need to gather some data and want to put them in a stored proc on Oracle and call it through SSIS. We tried adding our Oracle DB as a linked server and are getting some errors. I've tried the following code replacing the provider with 'OraOLEDB.Oracle.1', 'OraOLEDB.Oracle' as well as 'MSDAORA':
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
'ORA_TSTW', 'Oracle',
'OraOLEDB.Oracle.1', 'TSTW'
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'ORA_TSTW', false,
'user', 'lituser',
'pw'
select * from openquery(ORA_TSTW, 'select * from lituser.customer')
We keep getting the error for each of the providers we try. I've tried it in Management Studio as well as in an Exec SQL task (with debug set to 32-bit) to no avail.
Cannot create an instance of OLE DB provider "OraOLEDB.Oracle.1" for linked server "ORA_TSTW".
I've checked and the MSDAORA.dll is registered in both C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemOle DB as well as C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemOle DB.
If we can't where we can call an Oracle stored proc, we were thinking of just using a script task to connect to Oracle and retrieve the data we need, but I have a feeling performance this way would be degraded.
Anyone have thoughts/suggestions? TIA!
Sabrina

Can someone please shed some light on what seems to me to be a common requirement.
If I create an alias or linked server to Server1 - say Alias1 - on Server1 and then use that name in a query on Server1, a remote/distributed query is always used (even though we are running on the local server and that overhead is completely unnecessary).
Is SQL Server really not capable of deciding that
select * from Alias1.db1.dbo.table1
and
select * from Server1.db1.dbo.table1
should be optimized and executed exactly the same when Alias1 is Server1, but that it is a distributed query ONLY when Alias1 is really referring to a remote server? I realize that the four part name is not necessary when I am referring to objects on the current server, but I am trying to write code that is server instance independent.
It just seems that if that is not possible, then the only way to create system independent stored procs that can run in dev, staging, and production environments and work with multiple databases on multiple servers is to create all sorts of scripts to regenerate all the procs whenever you move a database between servers?
If SQL Server is even close to the enterprise big iron server that MS now claims it is, it surely needs to support running in dev, staging, and production environments and work with multiple databases on multiple servers?!
I'm really looking for someone to tell me I'm missing something simple, and of course you can do this - but complex workarounds are invited too :-)
This is not something I am investigating as an academic exercise, I am already doing this, but I have to figure out how to do it better because with all these unnecessary distributed queries, performance is horrible.

Anyone have any suggestion on increasing the performance going over a linked server? IS this connection persistent? Or does it establish a connection with each reference? Any other Providers for the connection other than Microsofts OLE DB Provider for Oracle? I imagine that building index's on the referenced oracle tables would help?
Any help, input or suggestions would help.
