Setting Up SQL Server 2005 With Source Safe

Jul 17, 2006

My manager has asked me to install and configure Source Safe so that our team can check out stored procedures, (and other objects), and check them back in when we are finished working on them.

I'm not familiar with Visual Source Safe. Does SQL Server 2005 work with Visual Source Safe in such a way that I can check out/in SQL Server objects such as procedures?

If someone knows the answer, or perhaps an existing thread that covers this, please let me know.

Thank you for your time!

Source Safe And SQL Server 7.0

Oct 11, 2000

I'm in the process of locking down our SQL Server development environment and wanted to implement some type of version control, not just for stored procedures but for all database objects (tables, triggers, etc.)

A while back I read an article that explained how to utilize Visual Source Safe to establish version control for databases. If I recall correctly, I believe it had something to do with Visual Interdev and creating some project with Visual Interdev.

If anyone can provide alittle more insight into how to accomplish this, or at least point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Visual Source Safe Admin Question

Jan 3, 2007

Hi - I am wondering if anyone can give me good advice on the following situation:

I'm a new employee at a place where the SQL Server/Visual Source Safe admin has left. Only his co-worker has a VSS account and the VSS admin never gave her the admin p/w and he cannot be contacted. We need to have an account set up for me.

My question is: How can this be done with the knowledge of the admin p/w? Would we have to backup the files, un-install VSS, re-install it and set up the admin account again, or have I answered my own question? Or are we screwed? I don't have enough experience with VSS to make a decision.
At this point we're considering calling "Geek Sqaud" or "Geeks on Call", etc.

Thanks for any suggestions?

Stored Procedures In Visual Source Safe

Nov 15, 2007

I have about 40 stored procedures in a Visual Source Safe stored procedures which we are using for change control.

All stored procedures require to be moved into production across at least 13 different databases each on a dedicated server.

The only way I know at the minute is to do this manually. Does anyone out there have any ideas of how this task can be automated?

Visual Source Safe Data Cannot Be Accessed Through SQL CLR Stored Procedure

May 15, 2008

The goal is to address visual source safe database on the network. We have the srcsafe.ini in the network as \ipaddrsrcsafe.ini. Now I create a new VSSDatabase object and call its OpenDb. Well for simple consle app or winform it is ok. But I was running it under Sql server Stored Procedure. It failed for I cannot access the source safe path throgh the COM object.

I know it is because of Windows identity. So I add the following code before I want to open the database, changing the to the WindowsIdentity:
WindowsIdentity impersonId = SqlContext.WindowsIdentity;
WindowsImpersonationContext orgCtx = null;
try
{
orgCtx = impersonId.Impersonate();
VSS_Database = new MVSI.VSSDatabase();
// VSS_Database.ImpersonateCaller = true;
VSS_Database.Open(Path, UserName, PassWord);
}
catch (Exception err)
{

orgCtx.Undo();
throw err;
}
finally
{
orgCtx.Undo();
}

Without the commented line "// VSS_Database.ImpersonateCaller = true", this does not work at all. It just behave like no changes to the windows identity.
However if I add this code, well, OpenDb will result in a No-response query. The Sql server is running the query with no responses.
Have you ever met that before? I am really frustrated. Thanks

Setting Up ODBC Data Source For SQL Server

Jan 22, 2007

I am running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, and I am having difficulties setting up an ODBC User Data Source to connect to the SQL server.
I have tried going through "Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Data Sources (ODBC)" to add a user data source. For the SQL Server to connect to, I have tried specifying "localhostSQLEXPRESS", "SQLEXPRESS", "(local)", etc. -- but nothing seems to work. When the DSN configuration wizard tries to connect to the SQL Server to obtain default settings, it fails with the error "SQL Server does not exist or access denied". (Same error occurs if I try connecting to this ODBC data source later.)
But I know that the SQL Server exists and I have been using it through the SQL Server data provider in another application.
I am new to this, so any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kumar

Is It Safe To Use Volume Mount Points With SQL 2005?

Jul 20, 2006

Hello,

To implement the new SQL 2005, I plan to make the environment easy to manage. The environment should be simple to document and be automated via scripts. Therefore I plan to use mount points as described below.

On a typical SQL server with multiple drives like C, D, E, F, G, H. Where each drive will have various folders to hold SQL code, data files, transaction log files, tempdb files, snapshot files, and other types of files. This typical environment is not pretty and is hard to write scripts for.

So I plan to standardize on one standard directory structure via volume mount point. On all new SQL 2005 servers, we should see drive E as the one and only SQL Server directory. Other drives will be mounted to drive E as shown.

E:

SQLSERVER local folder -sql code for each db instance

SQLSHARED local folder -sql shared tools for all db instances

SQLTLOG1 Drive H -db transaction log

SQLSNAP1 Drive F -db snapshot files

SQLTEMPDB1 Drive H -tempdb main data file

SQLWORK Drive D - DBA work area

SQLDATA1 Drive G -db data files

SQLDATA2 Future Drive -if SQLDATA1 is too large for any direct attached drive, or to get more I/O throughput.

With this implementation, I can easily write scripts to manage the environment. Also if any mounted volume is out of space, we can swap the based drive without doing any change to database configuration. We can also switch from direct attached drive to SAN in the future.

Do you think mount point is safe to use with SQL 2005? I know it is supported.

Do you have a standard directory structure for your environment? How do you do it?

Thanks,

KTMD

Programatically Setting The XSD Location In An XML Source

Nov 8, 2007

Hi,

Is there a way to set the XSD programatically? I don't want to hard code an XSD filename/location.

Alternatively, is there a way to set the location in a relative path name (i.e. relative to the path of the package)? I did see a similar question here but that wasn't answered. I tried but I wasn't getting anywhere.

As far as I can see there is no way to set this with an Expression either.

Another alternative I thought of would be to set this with using the SSIS object model but I have no experience with this and I don't know if it can be done at run time. If it can be done I would appreciate a pointer to some further information on doing this.

Thanks,

Mark

Please let me know if any one had approached on SQL server this way. I am looking the way Oracle provides where you don€™t need to declare the data type of the column as Unicode type in table definition but can indicate when running a query to manipulate that field as Unicode field.

Setting Report Data Source Credentials Programmatically?

I've been working on an application that uploads an RDL to Reporting Services (through the SOAP webservice method CreateReport) programmatically. I'm having difficulty setting up the data source properties for my uploaded report. In particular the Data Source Credentials property.

The datasource for my report doesn't require credentials. By default after I upload the report to Reporting Services, the Data Source Credentials property is set to "Credentials supplied by the user running the report". How do I go about setting the Data Source Credentials property to "Credentials are not required" programmatically through the webservice?

Setting Network Affinity In Sql Server 2005

Mar 21, 2007

I have recently upgraded my databases from SQL 2000 to 2005. In 2000, I could set the network affinity so that sql server was only accessible from one of the two network cards. I cannot find how to do this in sql 2005. Is there a way?

In my installation, I have two network cards in each server. The "A" network adapter connects to the "A" hub, and the "B" adapter connected to the "B" hub. Traffic on trhe "B" hub is my private, non-routable network, This is where I want the SQL Server traffic to run. The A hub traffic is the public network. This gives me the ability to isolate SQL Server from the outside world.

Cannot Connect To To The Other Server When Setting Up Replication In SQL 2005

Jan 2, 2007

Im trying to setup replication between two 2005 standard editions. They are on the same LAN and installed equally + SP1. They are installed as named instances (with the same instance name MSSQL01). Remote access is allowed and TCP/IP and shared memory and I can connect between them.

SQL1MSSQL01 is configured as the publisher & distributor and the snapshot is done. When Im using the subscriber wizard from SQL1 to create the subscriptions and add SQL2MSSQL01 as a subscriber the connection fails to the remote server.

The error message is:

TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------

Cannot connect to SQL2MSSQL01.

------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Failed to connect to server SQL2MSSQL01. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

------------------------------

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

When I do a manual connection to SQL2 using the server managemnet studio on SQL1 I cannot connect using the instance name e.g. SQL2MSSQL01, it works only when only using the server name e.g. SQL2. Then I have full access both when using a windows or SQL user.

When trying with using the server name only when setting up the subscription, I got a error saying that I need to use the full name.

TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------

Cannot connect to TFMHQARNDE07.

------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

SQL Server replication requires the actual server name to make a connection to the server. Connections through a server alias, IP address, or any other alternate name are not supported. Specify the actual server name, ' SQL2MSSQL01'. (Replication.Utilities)

I can also mention that theese servers are cloned from another server and I needed to drop the old servername and add the new servername (sp_addserver) on both servers to get the publisher to work.

When I try to setup the subscription from SQL2 and add SQL1 as a publisher I get the same error.

Any one have any idea what it can be?

Instructions For Setting Up A Sybase ASE Server As A SQL Server 2005 Linked Server?

Dec 28, 2005

I have a Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise server which I need to set up as a linked server in SQL Server 2005.  The Sybase server is version 12.5.2, and the Sybase ODBC driver version is 4.20.00.67.  I have already installed the Sybase client software on the server.

I also created a SystemDSN on the SQL Server to connect to the Sybase server.  I tested the connection and it was able to connect.

I ran the following code to create the linked server:

<code>

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'LinkedServerName', @srvproduct=N'Sybase', @provider=N'MSDASQL', @datasrc=N'Sybase System DSN', @provstr=N'"Provider=Sybase.ASEOLEDBProvider;Server Name=servername,5000;Initial Catalog=databasename;User Id=username;Password=password"'

</code>

I then ran sp_tables_ex to make sure I could view the tables in the Sybase database.  Here is the error message I get:

<code>

OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "LinkedServerName" returned message "[DataDirect][ODBC Sybase Wire Protocol driver]Error parsing connect string at offset 13. ".

Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_tables_ex, Line 41

Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "LinkedServerName".

</code>

Any ideas what is happening here?

Bulk Insert In Foreach Loop Not Setting Source ConnectionString

Feb 22, 2008

Hello all,

I am running into an issue that seems to be collaborated here: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=188886&SiteID=1.

To summarize, I have a Foreach Loop that uses a Foreach File Enumerator. The loop writes the file names to a variable which is used in the Expressions property for a flat file's ConnectionString. The flat file is used as a source destination in a Bulk Insert Task that is inside the Foreach Loop. The flat file's connection string is not picking up the file name, resulting in this error: "The specified connection "test.txt" is either not valid, or points to an invalid object. To continue, specify a valid connection."

It doesn't work for a file connection manager or a flat file connection manager.

It does work if I replace the Bulk Insert Task with a Data Flow (flat file source -> ole db destination). It also works if I set the file's connection string manually in a script task.

It looks to me as though the Bulk Insert isn't calling whatever method in the connection manager that reevaluates the property expression. Am I missing something or is this a bug? I looked at the connect site, but couldn't find this particular scenario.

Thanks for any insight you might provide!
Jessica

Language Setting On Sql Server 2005 Compact Edition

Oct 18, 2007

Hi!

I have a problem changing the language setting to swedish on sql server 2005 compact edition. The thing is that I'm using a language dependent format: '1998-02-28 14:23:05' (Numeric) when saving and I rather don't want to change this format, because it's a lot of work. (The default setting on the database seems to be us-english, which has the format month-day-year and there by gets wrong for me).

As I understand, this is detemined by the language settings on login. So I set this by using the 'locale identifier' (sv-SE) in the connection string to the CE database, but when I try to save the data, the datum is still interpreted as us-english format.

(The application I'm running have been upgraded from sql compacte edition 2.0 where this worked just fine, though without specifing any language settings in the connection string.)

Appreciate any help!
