Jan 18, 2012I have a database instance which of course I can connect to and edit data. I would like to set up other users for this database that can just as easily connect but that only read data?

Oct 16, 2006I need to set up 1 new user in SQL Server 2005 to be able to read specific tables in a db (db1).
The user will connect from MS access using odbc links (SQL Native client ot SQL Server driver)
I've tried to set up one and once logged on from the user workstation, I can only see sys. tables and INFORMATION_SCHEMA tables.
None of the required db1 tables appear.
under Security/Logins I've created User1:
SQL Server auth. with password
default db = db1
server_roles = none
user mapping = map, db1, user1,dbo
securables = none
status = grant, enabled
on the access db, the odbc link was set up with default db = db1
Why can't I see any of the db1 tables?
How can I restrict access to the sys. tables?

Master Data Services :: Setting Read Permission On Entity Attribute Makes Model Disappear
May 21, 2013My company is new to MDS. I am trying to set an attritube in an entity to read only so the users can't change the value in that field. When I did that, the whole model disappeared. I thought I had deleted it by accident so I created a test model and tried to do the same. The test model disappeared. This time, before saving the new settings I took a snapshot. After saving I took another snapshot. You can see that the whole model is gone (zz_RN_Permissions_Test). I tried every other coworker with admin rights and nobody shows it on the Models list. The behavior on the Excel add-in is correct. I can't change any values on that column. But I need to keep the models available.

I have read only user for which I need to give permissions so that he can see the view definition from the management studio by right click - script view as - alter view - copy to clipboard.
Is there any access privilege/rights that can accomplish this.

Creating A Read Only User
Oct 10, 2005I'm not in our IT section but am responsible for the running of a finance application on SQL 2000.
I want a Read only user set-up on the SQL DB so that we can use Crystal and Access to look at the tables.
IT have some concerns with this as they say it by passes all security.
Are they spinning me a line?? Surely read oonly is read only? Can a user be restricted to a specific database as there are a number running on the same server.

Also, User-Defined Constraints are checked before a record is inserted or updated right?

Adding A User To A Read-Only Database

I currently have a sql server 2000 sp4 instance with a read-only db on it. We get tlogs shipped from an outside vendor and keep a copy of the production database in house for reporting purposes. The database is in read-only mode because we apply new tlogs daily. Recently we did a full recover and applied 2 tlogs.
The issue:
There is a user YYY in the database and at the server level, but they aren't linked. So I do what I usually do and run the following command:
exec sp_change_users_login 'Update_One', 'YYY','YYY'
Except for I get the following error:
Server: Msg 3906, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_change_users_login, Line 109
Could not run BEGIN TRANSACTION in database 'ZZZ' because the database is read-only.
Now this error makes sense and I understand why, so my question is how do I fix the users not being linked?

Jan 29, 2004I'm sure this is a really easy one but I want to create a user with read only access on a sql 2000 database using SQL authentication.
I'm building a little pilot DB system and I have a trainee developer who I want to built me some queries for crystal reports. But I dont want them to be able to amend/delete data or tables etc.
I've created the user but how to I set it to read only. Also will the user still have read only rights if the user has access to the database via enterprize manager/Query analysier.

User Permissions - Read Only With Create View
Jan 11, 2008I need to create a new login with SELECT rights so the users can view all tables with no UPDATE, DELETE, OR INSERT rights. But this user needs to be able to CREATE VIEWS. I have assigned the user to the Public role and gone in and modified Securables for the Database to be able to CREATE VIEW. When I connect using my new user and try to create a view, I get the error message: CREATE VIEW permissions denied in database 'test01'.

Aug 12, 1998If I want to easily and quickly grant all permissions to a group of objects
for one user (or group), how can I do this with the tools provided?
In 6.5, I could right-click the user or group and click the "Grant All" button.
In 7.0 this is either missing or has been moved.

Database Setting Itself To Single User Mode
Mar 19, 2001Our company has several SQL Server 7 databases. One of them has now on two occassions, set itself to 'Single User' mode. I am completely baffled as to what can be causing it.
There's no jobs set up to do it.
There's no stored procedures programmed to do it.
The SQL Server Log shows that a DBCC CHECKDB ran at 18:00:37.73 and that users attempted to and couldn't log in from 18:01:01.95 onwards.
There is a maintenance plan set to run every two hours that does a backup, integrity checks, so it fired the CHECKDB.
Any ideas please?

I like to know how I may store some user-specific data at the beginning of a session and retrieve the same data later during the session in a SQL command. For those of you familiar with ORACLE, I am trying to mimic the SET_CLIENT_INFO and GET_CLIENT_INFO functions of ORACLE's DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO package on SQL Server.
Any suggestions?

Feb 22, 2008I wrote a simple SSIS package that runs a batch and a stored proc. They both run fine. I can see the stored procedure run and in process under task manager I see the batch run. However I don't want the batch to run under the System account, how can I change to another user. Thank you.

However there is no domain user on database and web server. Is it possible set up web sync without a domain user? Which user can I then use to give permissions on the snapshot share folder.

I get a error when i run the page in the browser that says “login failed for aspuser.�
I know virtual directory is configured properly. I can run aspx page in the directory with out a db connection, without and error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Setting Sql Server Authentication For Database User - Wont Let Me
May 22, 2006I have created a database now I am setting login details for that user. I am using slq server authentication and entering a password of recommended length.
I enter my details in my webconfig file and I get -couldnot connect to database specified in connection string for sql data provider.
when I check the login properties the password has changed it appears to be the password for NT Authoritysystem, ie same length, what it is Idont know.
What am I missing?

I'd like to call dtexec with something like this:
dtexec /f myPackage.dtsx /Set package.variables[User::connStr].Value;Source=localhost;Provider=blah;Integrated Security=SSPI;
I get an error along the lines of
Option "Source=localhost;Provider=blah;Integrated" is not valid".
How do I pass in a property containing spaces? I've tried all of the usual quote-encasing patterns I can think of.

To allow users enter chinese character into table, I did try to change the field type to nchar and this is workable. But I have few hundred tables.. Is there anyway to change the setting in easier way? by instead change the field type one by one for each table?
I tried change the collation to Chinese_PRC_90_BIN for the database, but it is not support chinese input..
Any Idea?

I would like to ask if there will be a write and concurrency issue if i would create an online application with just one user connecting to the database, just like most open source php/mysql that can be downloaded
i.e
Setup 1. I will grant a single user that will connect to a database and will be set to a config.inc.php file and then create a table users (userid, username, password) and this table will be used for the application authentication and access control.
Setup 2. or is it much better to grant users that will connect to the database and have the table users for access control of the application?
to further illustrate my query:
Setup 1 would be:

Jan 18, 2008I have two database files, one .mdf and one .ndf. The creator of these files has marked them readonly. I want to "attach" these files to a new database, but cannot do so because they are read-only. I get this message:
Server: Msg 3415, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Database 'TestSprintLD2' is read-only or has read-only files and must be made writable before it can be upgraded.
What command(s) are needed to make these files read_write?
