Setting Up And Testing An Error Destination
Nov 24, 2006
I'm sure this is pretty basic for many folks, but how do I go about setting up and testing a Data Flow element's error output?
The intent is to set up flat file that'll contain the error output from elements on the Data Flow tab of an SSIS package. Later, I'd like to have the error output go to a SQL Server table so my DBAs have access to the errors.
There is no data transformation in this package -- it's very simple, just plain, delimited text to a 2-column SQL Server table.
Here's what I've done so far:
Set up a flat file destination to capture the error output. This flat file destination points to an empty file (C:ErrorDestination.txt) on my local machine.
Grabbed the "red" output from the Data Flow element (named "Source REGIONS"). This element is a flat file source, pointing to a file named Regions.txt. I was pleased to see that the connection manager for the error output was automatically populated with the 3 columns (Flat File Source Error Output Column, Error Code, and Error Column) when I clicked on the "New" connection button in the Flat File Destination Editor.
Changed the "Error Output" for the 2 columns in the flat file source to "Redirect Row" for both the Error and Truncation columns. I understand this instructs the source to send the error-causing rows to the error destination.
I ran the package to make sure nothing has changed how it operates under normal conditions.
But, when I introduce an obvious error into the source file (removing a quote surrounding data in one row) the package blows up on the Data Flow element in the Control Flow tab, the flat file source in the Data Flow tab turns red, but nothing flows to the error destination.
I truly expected the error on the flat file source to flow into the error destination on the data flow tab.
Any ideas? I appreciate any guidance or insight you might be able to give!
Sorry for the length of this post, but I wanted to make sure I've covered my bases.
Thanks a ton!

Hi,
I'm new to the whole MS SQL server thing, have been using Access in past developments via the development platform in Dreamweaver.
Now I'm making the leap to MS SQL and still want to use Dreamweaver to handle some of the development aspects, does anyone know how or what i would need to do to have a direct connection with the server in dreamweaver?
I've setup an ODBC connection with my hosting providers already.
THANKS!

On 2 servers (Windows 2000 and Windows 2003) both with SQL Server 2000 - the Operating System Event Viewer - System Log - shows Event ID 2012 (Warning - Source = Srv;network error occured).
On the Client side - we get the following error:
unable to open table.: ODBC Error: ODBC RC=-1, ODBC SQLState=08S01, DBMS RC=11, DBMS Msg=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]General network error. Check your network documentation
This seems to only occur when the testing is done in a multithreaded mode.
Any ideas?

In SQL 7 DTS I'm creating a Data Driven Query Tasks. When I get to writing the transformations in VB Script and try using the Test button to test the script, I get the following message:
Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services Flat File Rowset
Provider
Error opening datafile. The system cannot find the file specified.
The documentation says:
[The transformation is tested] by executing it against a part of the
source data and copying the results to a temporary text file, for
preview purposes.
I can find no place to specify what temporary file is used for the test result and, because it is temporary, have assumed the system creates and
deletes it as needed.
Is this true?
I get this test error for every transformation. even those that work correctly when the DTS package is actually executed.
What can I do to get the transformations to test properly?
Any help or hints will be greatly appreciated.

I need to develop code for a TRY...CATCH block in SQL Server 2008 R2 for the following error, that occurs when I get a timeout from a linked server that connects to a server in another country:
OLE DB provider "ORAOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "MyRemoteServer" returned message "ORA-12170: TNS:Connect timeout occurred".
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 77
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "ORAOLEDB.Oracle" for linked server "MyRemoteServer".
Most times, it doesn't time out, but occasionally gives me a 7303 error. I can't control when timeouts happen and when they don't. I can't use RAISERROR on error 7303, as it only works on custom errors >= 50000.
My question is, how do I simulate a timeout so that I can verify my error handling code? I need a procedure that waits 10 seconds and tries again 3 times, but how do I generate the error?

I have a SSIS package that reads data from a dump table, runs a custom script that takes date data and converts it to the correct format or nulls and formats amt fields to currency, then inserts it to a new table. The new table redirects insert errors. This process worked fine until about 3 weeks ago. I am processing just under 6 million rows, with 460,000 or so insert errors that did give error column and code.
Now, I am getting 1.5 million errors. and nothing has changed, to my knowledge. I receive the following information.
Error Code -1071607685 Error Column 0 Error Desc No status is available.
The only thing I can find for the above error code is
DTS_E_OLEDBDESTINATIONADAPTERSTATIC_UNAVAILABLE
To add to the confusion, I can not see any errors in the data written to the error table. It appears that after a certain point is reached in the processing, everything, or most records, error out.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

I'm trying to create a simple Data transfermation. I have a flat file that came of a unix server.. it's 177 bytes wide.. thought it was 175, but when I created the flat file connector, I could see some extra characters on the end.
My output is going to be an excel spreadsheet, I only want two columns from the input. I created an oledb jet 4.0 connection. and followed instructions from here :

Hey,
I get an error when I try to use a SQL Server Destination.
I want to use this because its performance, before I've used OLE DB Destination.
The idea is that I put data from a table or SQL statement and that I put that in a table using SQL Server Destination.
Now the SQL server stands on different server then where my SSIS is saved. I'm not using my windows credentials ( safety reasons ).
The message I get is standing below:
[SQL Server Destination [905]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E14. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80040E14 Description: "Could not bulk load because SSIS file mapping object 'GlobalDTSQLIMPORT ' could not be opened. Thanx for the info.

Hi,
I'm storing errorcode and errorcolumn values in a separate table called errorrows, I am using the standard ssis add-on reporting package including the logging database.
When using the OLE DB destination adapter I would like to log the error message (reason).
These kind of messages are OLE DB specific and won't be logged in my standard logging (error rows and package logging).
Is it possible to catch the ole DB error message so I'm able to log it?

I know how to setup the components to redirect error rows. Unfortunately, you can only redirect error rows coming through a transform. The only ones you can actually redirect going from a transform to a data destination are things like violations of a primary/foreign key. However, redirection does not work if you have a row come through a transform to a destination and the error is a constraint violation like trying to stick a null into a not null column. This simply makes the entire thing fail and shut down instead of redirecting just the row which failed.
This is the specific case. I have a really messed up inbound file. The file is pipe delimited and at least every row is the same length. I bring the file in and shove the entire file through a derived column task to explicitly calculate nulls since I can't get the convert data task to handle it and I didn't want to rewire the entire package. From there the data flows into my first conditional split where I look at the 4th column of data and split off the rows for a specific record type. These rows flow through a convert data task to do the data type conversion specific to that record type and then flow into an OLE DB destination adapter. The remaining rows flow down into a derived column transform to do some additional scrubbing for the remaining record types. From there, it flows into a conditional split to split the records out 16 ways based on the value in the 4th column, with anything not matching being dumped back to an error file for someone to look at. Each leg of the conditional split sends the row through a convert data task to convert the data to the data types specific to that given record type. I have error files setup for each of these off the convert data task which redirect any row that fails conversion. This redirects any row which doesn't convert properly. It also succeeds in redirecting any row which violates a primary or foreign key constraint. However, it does not handle those cases where the inbound file had a null when the column within the database does not allow a null. In those cases, the entire thing simply fails and then we have to grab the error and have someone page through thousands of lines of the input file to try to find the row which had a problem. What I really need to be able to do is configure the OLEDB Destination Adapter to redirect any rows which throw an error when they hit the database, unfortunately, you can't do this because a detsination adapater doesn't have any output (even though there is a place to configure errors with redirect being an option).
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can setup an error redirection to redirect ONLY those rows which are rejected, because the inbound file has a NULL where it shouldn't? Please don't tell me that I have to set something up to test every single column, because we are talking about over 2,000 columns which would need to be checked.

Good day,
I'm working with SSIS on SQL Server 2005 and trying to update a table with a OLEDB Destination.
The table I'm updating does not accept Null values. I've tried to update the table in several ways.
Using a "Table or view - Fast Load " Data Access Mode. I get the can't load data due to "Null values are not accepted in field xyz"
Using SQL Command text. Used the isnull function on all null fields and the "Failure inserting into the Read Only Column xyz"
I've check the properties of the table I'm writing to. I've check my user credentials.
Can any of you shed some light on what I'm missing.
thanks

Am new to SSIS and developing a component which pulls data from a staging table and drops them into another table in the same database.
Am using a
1) OLE DB Source to get the data from the staging table.
2) OLE DB Destination to insert or push the data into another table of the same database.
3) Script component to get the error rows and to update the staging table column with a flg value.
The rows that throw an error like primary key violation, or any other error should be redirected to the script component and the process should get completed.
The Error Output of the OLE DB Destination doesnt show any columns to be selected for Redirect Row option
The script executes without any error and the records are shown in error path but the records are not updated in the DB.
This is what i have in the script
Public Class ScriptMain
Inherits UserComponent
Dim sqlConn As SqlConnection
Dim sqlCmd As SqlCommand
Dim connMgr As IDTSConnectionManager90
Dim txnIdParam As SqlParameter
Dim errorDescParam As SqlParameter
Public Overrides Sub AcquireConnections(ByVal Transaction As Object)
connMgr = Me.Connections.ErrorConnection
sqlConn = CType(connMgr.AcquireConnection(Nothing), SqlConnection)
End Sub
Public Overrides Sub PreExecute()
sqlCmd = New SqlCommand("UPDATE STG_TRANSACTION SET ERROR_FLG='Y' AND ERROR_DESC=@errorDescParam WHERE TXN_ID=@txnIdParam ")
fueltxnIdParam = New SqlParameter("@txnIdParam", SqlDbType.BigInt)
errorDescParam = New SqlParameter("@errorDescParam", SqlDbType.VarChar)
sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(errorDescParam)
sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(txnIdParam)
End Sub
Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)
sqlCmd.Parameters("@txnIdParam").Value = Row.TXNID
sqlCmd.Parameters("@errorDescParam").Value = Row.ErrorCode
End Sub
End Class
Pleas let me know the solution and any help will be appreciated.

I am developing a custom destination component and I have encountered a few areas where there seems to be a lack of helpful documentation and examples.
1. I have not been able to find any information on or examples of creating custom destinations with an error output. The OLE DB Destination has an error output so I investigated the input and error output properties in the advanced editor and found that the OLE DB Destination error output is synchronous with the input (its SynchronousInputID matches the input's ID) and has its ExclusionGroup value set to 1. Using this information, I modeled my error output after the OLE DB Destination.
ProvideComponentProperties:
AddErrorOutput(ERROR_OUTPUT_NAME, input.ID, 1);
ProcessInput:
int errorOutputID = -1;
int errorOutputIndex = -1;
GetErrorOutputInfo(ref errorOutputID, ref errorOutputIndex);
...
buffer.DirectErrorRow(errorOutputID, 0, errorOutputIndex);
Checking the input and error output properties in the advanced editor for my custom destination component I find the following:
Input
-----
ID: 3515
Error Output
------------
ExclusionGroup: 1
ID: 3516
IsErrorOut: True
SynchronousInputID: 3515
Shortly after I start my SSIS package and it encounters an error row, I get the following exception:
[My Destination Adapter 1 [3512]] Error: System.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range. at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.Wrapper.IDTSBuffer90.DirectErrorRow(Int32 hRow, Int32 lOutputID, Int32 lErrorCode, Int32 lErrorColumn) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.PipelineBuffer.DirectErrorRow(Int32 outputID, Int32 errorCode, Int32 errorColumn) at MyDestination.ProcessInput(Int32 inputID, PipelineBuffer buffer) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ManagedComponentHost.HostProcessInput(IDTSManagedComponentWrapper90 wrapper, Int32 inputID, IDTSBuffer90 pDTSBuffer, IntPtr bufferWirePacket)
2. My custom destination component is used for writing a file with a fixed schema. I followed the means by which source component examples add their output columns, but applied this to my external metadata columns. In my Validate() I check if the ExternalMetadataColumnCollection.Count == 0 and return DTSValidationStatus.VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA; to force a call to ReinitializeMetaData(). In ReinitializeMetaData() I call a method that creates the input's external metadata columns that reflect my external data source.
This works fine except every time I add my custom destination component to a SSIS Package and go to edit the component I am greeted with a dialog box that states: "The component is not in a valid state. ... Do you want the component to fix these errors automatically?" Pressing the Yes button, I assume, makes the call to ReinitializeMetaData() and I have my external metadata columns. Where is the correct place to add the external metadata columns so the user does not have to take this extra step every time they add my component to their package?

Hi,
I'm developing a SSIS package and am coming across this problem:
"Error at myTable [DTS.Pipeline]: component 'OLE DB Destination' (156) failed validation and returned error code 0xC020801C.
Here's the situation with my package. It basically consists of a bunch of tasks to build a database and populate the tables from an Excel file.
The first task runs a SQL file to create all my DB tables, etc. The next set of tasks import data from the Excel file into the tables. All tasks have precedence constraints so that the SQL file will build the DB tables first.
Here's the problem. Everything works perfectly if my database ALREADY exists. The problem comes when the database does not exist. It seems like the SSIS does some sort of schema validation on my dataflow tasks to ensure that everything is ok.
Is there any way to bypass this validation so that my SSIS will run ok without the DB already existing? I know that everything WILL be ok because the ExecuteSQL task will create the structure for me.
I used to work with SQL 2000 DTS, and i never ran into this problem before. Previously, i could run the DTS no problem, however, i just couldn't open the transformations if the DB didn't exist.
Thanks.

I have a data flow that takes an OLE DB Source, transforms it and then uses an OLE DB Command as a destination. The OLE DB Command executes a call to a stored procedure and I have the proper wild cards indicated. The entire process runs great and does exactly what is intended to do.
However, I need to know when a SQL insert fails what record failed and I need to log this in a file somewhere. I added a Flat File Destination object and configured appropriately. I created 3 column names for the headers in the flat file and matched them with column names existing for output. When I run this package the flat file log is created ok, but no data is ever pumped into the file when a failure of the OLE DB Command occurs.
I checked the Advanced Editor for the OLE DB Command object and under the OLE DB Command Error Output node on the Input and Output Properties tab I notice that the ErrorCode and ErrorColumn output columns both have ErrorRowDisposition set to RD_NotUsed. I would guess this is the problem and why no data is written to my log file, but I cannot figure out how to get this changed (fields are greyed out so no access).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Guys.
I am new to using SSIS and need some assistance. I am trying to create a package that will loop through a folder of DBF files and import them into SQL server. Here is what I did so far:
- Created a Foreach Loop Container with a Data Flow Task within
- Created a string variable to store the file names
- Created the OLE DB Source and Destinations
- Created the connection manager with dBASE III Extended Property pointed to the folder where the files are.
When I try to set the OLE Source to use the file name variable, I get an error stating that there is no Destination table defined. I get the same error when I try to setup the OLE Destination. How do I resolve this issue? I want it to import each file into its own table. Is there any way to reuse this file name variable as the destination table name?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm in the process of running some tests to determine which method is faster...
I created a data flow task OleDB Source -> Data Conversion -> OleDb Destination. Error outputs from the OleDB destination is sent to a flat file destination. This works great.
I'm importing millons of rows and found that using SQL Server Destination (local) is much faster than the OleDB Destination. However, I have not figured out how to output errors to a flat file destination like I did when using the OleDB destination.
Is there any way to trap errors in a flat file when using a SQL Server Destination?

I'm trying to export data to an Excel destination. I'm receving the following error on a notes column which is an nvarchar(max) datatype.
Error: 0xC0202025 at Data Flow Task, Excel Destination [124]: Cannot create an OLE DB accessor. Verify that the column metadata is valid.
I realize that the charcater limit on an Excel cell is 32, 767 characters, but none of the test data that I'm using is close to that. I've also tried using ntext and receive the same error. When I change the datatype to nvarchar(4000), it works fine. I've also changed the destination to a flat file using nvarchar(max) and I don't receive the error. Unfortunately, our vendor specifies that they have to have an Excel file. Does anyone know what is causing this error, if it's a bug, or have any suggestions?

I am using Advantage ODBC 6.2 to connect to a Advantage Data Server to
push data from a SQL table into this server. I can view the data from
the ADS with DTS and I can insert data by using "Insert into TempTable ("Last
Name","First Name") values ('test','test)" from a Execute SQL Statement. The issue is when I build
up a DTS package to pull from SQL into the Advantage ODBC, I get a
"missing closing ")"" error. I have narrowed it down to the column
names in the destination table having spaces (Last Name, First Name,
and a bunch of others. DBA 101 here). How do I beat this?
I have tried editing the destination column names in disconnected edit
by adding the double quotes but get a "Column Name '"Last Name"' not
found" error. Wrapping them with [] doesn't work. I think this is a
limit on Advantage.
When I try to use Advantage OLE DB, I get an 'Ace32.dll must be newer
then the other dll" error. I am afraid of upgrading Ace32.dll and not
break other things.
So with this said my two questions:
How do I get the destniation column names wrapped in double quotes when using transformations?
or
Is there a way I can do an Insert into Advantage connection(column names) values (Select Values from SQL Server connection)?

In my SSIS project I am populating an Excel spreadsheet with several worksheets. When I define a worksheet in Excel Destination Editor, I use Create Table SQL statement to create a worksheet. Most of the fields are defined as numbers, however when job runs my numeric fields appear as text in Excel with yellow warning sign - 'The number in this cell is formatted as text or preceeded by an apostrophe'. I need my numbers to appear as numbers. Is there a workaround for this?

I am inserting rows using OLEDBDestination and want to redirect all error rows to EXCEL Destination.
I have used Data Conversion Transformation to Convert all strings to Unicode string fields before sending it to Excel Destination.
But its gives the following error.
[Data Conversion [16]] Error: Data conversion failed while converting column 'A' (53) to column "Copy of A" (95). The conversion returned status value 8 and status text "DBSTATUS_UNAVAILABLE".
[Data Conversion [16]] Error: The "output column "Copy of A" (95)" failed because error code 0xC020908E occurred, and the error row disposition on "output column "Copy of A" (95)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.
Can someone please tell me what should I do to make it work?
Thanks,
