Setting Up Remote Logins

Jul 30, 1999

I want to set up two servers so that users on Server_1 can run stored procedures on Server_2.

Server_1 is SQL Server 7.0 using NT and standard security, while Server_2 is 6.5 using standard security.

I want all users on Server1 mapped onto one login ('RemoteLogin') on Server2, with no password checking. And I'm only setting up the servers as Remote Servers rather than Linked.

I though something along the lines of:

EXEC sp_addremotelogin 'Server1', 'RemoteUser', null
EXEC sp_remoteoption 'Server1', 'RemoteUser', null, 'trusted', 'TRUE'

would achieve this. Unfortunately it only works for the users who connect under standard security. Those who gain access via NT logins, get an error message:

Server: Msg 4002, Level 14, State 1, Line 1
Login failed

How can I get round this?

Setting Up Logins

Aug 14, 2007

I have to set up mirroring for a web application. The web application is designed to connect to Sql Server using Sql Server authentication. The system configuration includes 3 instances of sql server running on different boxes with one of those instances being a witness as we want to support automatic failover. All instances of Sql Server on running in the same domain. My question is what are my options for authentication between the Sql Server instances? Am I restricted to using Sql Server authentication because that is what the web app uses? The web app has a login created on the principal server with rights to access only the appropriate database.

Deny Remote Logins?

Sep 17, 2002

I was wondering if there is anyway to deny remote logins on SQL Server 7 (other then pulling the network cable out of the back :) ) so that nothing can login during a service pack upgrade?

Many thanks in advance

SQL 2012 :: Grant Read-only Access To Windows Logins On Remote Standby Database

Mar 23, 2015

We log ship our production database tansaction logs to a secondary database on a separate remote domain.

Incidentally, this was not set up via the "Ship Transaction Logs" wizard, but instead we had to use the various system stored procedures after restoring a copy of the database on the remote domain in standby mode.

We now have an issue where users are unable to access the remote secondary database without having sysadmin privileges. Clearly we want to avoid this!

We want to be able to use Windows Authentication mode on the server of the secondary database. But since the two domains differ, is it possible to even achieve this?

How can we set up read-only access for users on the secondary database without giving them sysadmin privileges?

Lost SQL Logins, But Still Have DB Logins - Script To Recreate SQL Logins?

Jan 21, 2007

ok, first, I know... I forgot to run a backup of the master database, and I forgot to run a script to caputure logins. Not that that is out of the way... I need to recreate the logins under the Securities tab below the databases. All the company databases have the user names and passwords assigned to them, but they are not able to login, because they are not able to authenticate to the SQL server first.

Is there a script that someone has that will copy the company database security info for the users and recreate them in the SQL security tab?

I know that I can rebuild them manually, but I need to delete them first in the application software, then delete them from the databases, and then recreate them in the application software... and as simple as that sounds... it is a slow moving process.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Setting Up Remote Access

Jul 21, 2006

Hi,

I have written a VB program using an SQLExpress database on my machine, and I want other users to remotely access it. From what I have read, all I have to do for the Client machines is load on SQL Native Client and install the EXE. I have also enabled TCI/IP etc and setup the exceptions on my firewall. My connectionstring is

"Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Database=<mydata>;Data Source=<machinename>sqlexpress"

When I run the EXE on the client machine, I get the following error...

Cannot open database <mydata> requested by the login. The login failed.

I am totally new to SQL and would appreciate any help in getting this setup. Do I need to put my login details into the connection string so other PCs can log into my database..?

ACCESS was never this hard to deploy, but I really want to learn SQL.

Thanks in advance

Setting Up SQL Server For Remote Clients

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,I am having a hard time setting up an SQL Server 2000 DeveloperEdition instance for remote clients. The instance is running well andI can connect to it on the local computer. When I try connecting fromanother computer using Enterprise Manager with the server's IP as theinstance name, I always get the usual "Specified SQL Server not found"error. I have used Enterprise Manager many times to connect to localand remote servers (which were set up by someone else obviously).I used the client network utility on the client to make an alias forthis server and have it use the TCP/IP library for port 1433.I understand that SQL Server listens on port 1433 for connections. Ihave a firewall on the server and setup 1433 forwarding. But when Iuse Enterprise Manager to try to register the server, the firewalldoesn't even show a connection attempt on port 1433 (it logs allconnection attempts). When I use telnet to port 1433, the firewall logs the attempt butthere is still no connection, as if the server isn't actuallylistening on 1433 at all. I can't seem to find any help on getting theserver listening, as if it supposed to be easy to set up so I don'tknow what I'm missing. I guess I have the following questions:1) Does anything have to be done on the server side to set it up tolisten for remote client connections?2) How do I set the port on which the server listens in case I want tochange from 1433?3) Does anything have to be set up on the client side other than usingthe client network utility?4) Why does Enterprise Manager not seem to even attempt a connectionon port 1433 when I try to register this server?Any help is appreciated.

Setting Up A SQL Server For Remote C# Clients

Apr 25, 2008

Hello, I know that this has been asked several times, but none of the answers that I've found seem to help me.
I've been programming a C# client app that helps netadmins at my school file and solve tickets. I use an SQL 2005 backend; it works just fine on my dev computer (with C# express installed) which doubles as the SQL server. Now, when I move to a different computer, w/o Visual C# or SQL installed, I get.
"Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0,Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=(RANDOMVALUE)' failed."

my connection string

@"Server=FLHS7T-39312914SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;Database=msdb"

I've previously been able to get it to run both on client and server, but this error cropped up after a bit of a hiatus...

Setting Up Client PC To Access Remote SQL Server

Jul 20, 2006

Hi,

I am a VB6 programmer and I'm really new to SQL Express, I have always used ACCESS because it was so easy to deploy. I've now written a VB6 program which uses SQL Express and I want to know how to deploy it. Basically my PC will host the SQL database as it has SQL Express loaded onto it. I now want to install my EXE onto other Client's PC and have them read/write to the database on my machine.

Besides the EXE program, what software do I need to load onto the Client's PC so they can access my SQLExpress database...? (eg: Net Framework, SQLExpress, etc).

Also, if my machine is called ABC123, in my connectionstring do I just put in

ABC123sqlexpress as the datasource..?. Will this be enough for the other PCs to connect to mine ?

Thanks

Moving DBs From SQL Server Logins To Windows Logins

Apr 3, 2007

I am a systems analyst and work with an app that runs against 2 SQL Server DBs. Though I have some familiarity with SQL Server and SQL, I am not a DBA.

The app executable is tied to a Windows service.
When we install the app, we run a process that builds 2 dbs to include:
Tables, indexes, stored procedures, views and user accounts.
SQL Server is set up for mixed mode authentication.

Normally, the dbs run off the local db user accounts which are tied to local logins with the same names.
We have a client that wants to remove our standard logins so that they can run on only a Windows login.
I know I should be able to tie the db users to a Windows login.
And I can do the same for the service.

But I am at a loss as to how to get this done.
How do you associate db users with a Windows login?
When I have tried sp_change_users_login I get an error that the Windows login does not exist. (Though I have added the Windows account to the DB.)

Hope this all makes sense.

Error 15185: There Is No Remote User 'sa' Mapped To Local User '(null)' From The Remote Server 'DTS_FSERVER'.

Nov 10, 2006

I am trying to add a linked server from a AMD x64 server (Windows 2003) with SQL Server 2005 64 bit to a Server running SQL 2000. These are not in the same domain.

I can create a linked server using the option "Be made using the login's current security context" but can not when trying to specify the security context, i.e. sa and the sa password. When I try I get the following message:

Msg 15185, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_addlinkedsrvlogin, Line 98
There is no remote user 'sa' mapped to local user '(null)' from the remote server 'DTS_FSERVER'.

I have several other x64 server that I have no problem creating a linked server and specifying sa and the sa password.

The problem with using "the login's current security context" option is that I get an error when trying to run any Jobs against the linked server. The job fails withe the following error:

Executed as user: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM. Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7416). The step failed.

I'm sure the two errors are related. Any ideas what is going on?

700 Logins

Apr 13, 2000

I have a server that was recently upgraded from SQL 6.5 to 7.0 that contains almost 700 logins using standard security. Is there a limit to the number of logins that SQL will host? The logins/users have all been added using a GUI within an application and does not support NT authentication. Does this cause any known problems in SQL 7? When I right click on the database and go to properties / permissions MMC gets hung up. Also one of the systems analysts is convinced that SQL is dropping permissions (I disagree to this). Any one have any thoughts or experience with large numbers of logins / users?
