Setup And Upgrade :: Cluster Installation Failed On Adding Node To Cluster

Oct 10, 2015

During the installation of Adding node to a SQL Server failover cluster(On passive node) getting error like.. The MOF compiler could not connect with the WMI server. This is either because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start. We  run the below commands but didn’t get any resolution & got the same above error .

1st Method…

1. Open console command (Run->CMD with administrator privileges).

2. net stop winmgmt

3. Rename folder %windir%System32WbemRepository to other one, for backup purposes (for example _Repository).

4. net start winmgmt

2nd Method..

1. Disable and stop the WMI service.

a) Command : - sc config winmgmt start= disabled

b. Command : -                 net stop winmgmt

2. Run the following commands.

a).  Command:  Winmgmt /salvagerepository %windir%System32wbem

b). Command:   Winmgmt /resetrepository %windir%System32wbem

3. Re-enable the WMI service

Command:          sc config winmgmt start= auto

Last command to run after above steps

4. Command:     mofcomp "%programfiles(x86)%Microsoft SQL Server100Sharedsqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"

File not found Error for above command.

If you have your Data, Logs, System and TempDB all in VMDK's and those VMDK's are formatted to 64K and then reside on Clustered Storage that is formatted as 4K, which is then running through a SAN controller that is reading and writing in 2MB chunks, is there value in formatting the SQL drives as 64K?  Also, would it be better to format the Clustered Storage as 64K?  Is this a situation in which formatting the SQL drives as 64K is becoming a moot point?

Recovery :: Setup FILESTREAM On Failover Cluster

Apr 22, 2015

I saw following point on Technet article about RBS.The local FILESTREAM provider is supported only when it is used on local hard disk drives or an attached Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) device. You cannot use the local RBS FILESTREAM provider on remote storage devices such as network attached storage (NAS).It looks like that we cannot use FILESTREAM on Failover Cluster because to setup Failover Cluster we need to have NAS. But then the NAS is made available locally for Failover Cluster so FILESTREAM should work right?Found another article which talks about setting up FILESTREAM on Failover Cluster. URL...

Upgrade SQL Server 2000 Failover Cluster From SP3 To SP4

Sep 13, 2006

I have a production failover cluster running SQL Server 2000 at SP3that I want to upgrade to SP4. I do not have a test failover clusterto test with so I need the install on the primary server to work thefirst time. Per the information I have I just install the patch on theprimary server and it will install both on the primary and on thesecondary. However, I remember when I did the initial install and it failed. Thefirst problem traced to the fact that the install uses temporary filesunder the profile of the installing administrator and the id had neverlogged into the second server so the install failed on creating thetemporary file. The was a second problem that related to an OS featurethat had to be off for the install to work.If anyone out there has done this upgrade and remembers encountering aproblem and its fix/workaround I would appreciate a head up warning.Thank you-- Mark D Powell --

Failover Cluster Using 64 Bit Windows 2k3 On Single HBAs And DS400 With Dual Controller

Apr 12, 2006

We are trying to setup a system to system failover cluster using twonodes (x346) which each have a single hba running to seperatecontrollers on the DS400.For full redundnancy, IBM recommends dual path from each node but wedont need that. The current setup has two completly seperate paths. hbaon node 1 to controller A on DS400 and hba on node 2 to controller B.If i take a controller offline, failover works fine to jumo to othercontroller and throw all resources to it's node but if i shutdown anode- the cluster loses all attached storage and DS400 is unaware toswitch ownership to other controller. Is there a way to us mscs without dual path from each node?anotherwords... if either node or controller fails on a single path, wewant the other path to become active.our main goal is to use sql server 2005 clustering on the cluster.everything checks out perfect if i only use one controller on the DS400for both nodes but this brings us back to another single point offailure.I saw that Qlogic has MPIO drivers on thir website for the DS400 but itseems as though they are for 32bit systems and the install errors outwith:C:Driversmpio1.0.8.4 (w32)>install.exe -iPre-Installing the Multi-Path Adapter Filter...SuccessInstalling the Multi-Path Bus Driver...Failure. Setup And Upgrade :: Windows Authentication Not Working After Password Change?

Apr 29, 2015

This morning I attempted to connect to my local copy of SQL Server (2012) (Win 7) using Windows Authentication. I was unable to do so and per the error log it was due to error 18456 (invalid credentials).

Yesterday I changed my windows password. Is it possible for this to be the cause?

FYI, following is from the error logs:

2015-04-27 10:10:32.98 Backup BACKUP DATABASE successfully processed 0 pages in 0.451 seconds (0.000 MB/sec).2015-04-28 00:00:41.90 spid18s This instance of SQL Server has been using a process ID of 2096 since 4/21/2015 9:08:05 AM (local) 4/21/2015 1:08:05 PM (UTC). This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

The logs showed the error occurred yesterday (4/28) which is about when I changed my password. The 17:09 log (last one) is when I shut down my computer.  Note that I was logged into SQL Server when I changed my Windows password and worked with it several times through out the day.

Also, per the configuration manager SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) (and all other services) is stopped and I was unable to start it ("The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion).

MS SQL Clustering And Failover

I have a 2 node Microsoft 2000 cluster with a shared storage device. Iwant to create automatic failover for MS SQL 2000 server. I can dothat wit the following options:1. Active/Pasive (one instance installed)2. Active/Active (More then one instance/virtual sql serversinstalled)I have a question about option 2.Is it possible to have more then one instance/virtual SQL server, service only one database for example loadbalancing. ?, or when youcreate multiple instances/virtual SQL servers, does that mean you havemultiple databases ? If not why does a Virtual SQL server has to betaken over by a cluster node that didnt fail. Then you can actuallyuse option 1. Please advise! The documentation is not very clear on this issues.Regards,Nico de Groot

Can't Install IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server On Windows 2003 X64 Storage Server, How Can I Fix The Pkg?

Jan 14, 2008

I am a Windows developer for the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server (TSMS) product.
Our product installation is built with InstallShield and uses the Windows Installer.

On a new installation of Windows 2003 x64 Storage Server R2, at a customer's site, the TSMS product fails to install.
The install of the OS has version 3.01.400.3959 of the Windows Installer and I see no newer version that installs.

Part of our product is 32 bit (console) and another part is x64 (server).
When installing I can see that the install's default is being redirected/reset to C:Program Files (x86)TivoliTSM after it is explicitly set by a custom action to ..Program Files.. . I further observe that our custom actions to write 64 bit registry entries are being refused.

REGSAM samMask = KEY_ALL_ACCESS;
if ( regIsWow64Process () ) samMask = samMask | KEY_WOW64_64KEY;
lStatus = RegCreateKeyEx( hLocalConnectKeyRoot,
szSubkey,
0L,
NULL,
REG_OPTION_NON_VOLATILE,
samMask,
NULL,
hKey,
&dw ) ;
The above fails to create the key.

We have tried four versions of our TSMS spanning many changes but the install acts the same.
This does not happen on any other Windows OS we test on but we do not test on Windows 2003 Storage Server R2 being that it is an OEM product. We did test on Windows server 2003 R2 x64 and do not see this problem.

Do you have any suggestions on how to tackle this problem?
I have full installation traces but can only see that the registry work is being refused. I can't see why.

Clustering - Effor With Restore After Failover

Feb 20, 2000

I have two SQL 7.0 SP1 (WinNT 4.0 SP 6.2) Servers using Clustering.

Problem: When SQLBox1 goes down, the Failover sends it to SQLBox2. When
SQLBox1 comes back up, the node stays on SQLBox2, instead of going back to
SQLBox1. This happens over 50% of the time, but not every time. Sometimes
it works fine.

I have done 3 hours of research, and can not find anything on this problem,
can any one a tleast point me in the right direction. I can hardly find any
troubleshooting on this issue. I do have January 2000 of the MSDN Library
installed on my machine if that helps, but there was not much on it in there
either (at least not that I found).

MS Clustering Vs Hardware Failover Blades

Sep 29, 2004

In evaluating/comparing MS Clustering vs Hardware Failover Blades, has anyone come across any disadvantages/concerns for a Hardware Failover Blades.

Why would you install MS SQL 2000 Clustering when you can use a Hardware Failover Blade and use a SQL 2000 standard edition. e.g In an event a hardware failure occurs the admin manager brings over a standby hardware blade and reassigns it to the SAN (on which OS and SQL 2000) is installed and you are up and running.

Would appreciate any comments and suggestions to compare these solutions.

Thanks
