We're doing upgrades from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2014. This is blocked due to RS is installed but not configured. Our desired action is to uninstall RS and proceed with the upgrade. But when setuparp.exe is raised, it does not list all the features on the 'Select Features' page. In fact, it only lists the last 2 shared features (SQ Client Connectivity SDK and Microsoft Sync Framework). However, all items appear to be listed on the 'Select Instance' page including RS. I've seen this issue on 2 of our SQL 2008 R2 Servers already.

Hello all,
does someone know where to find information regarding what is accesible to a BUILTINAdministrator which is not accesible to a System Administrator?
Somewhere I have read that a System Administrator can not see the "All users' folders (i.e. the collection of "My folder"s for all users of the Report Server) but I have also experienced a behaviour which has surprised me: as a System Administrator with all permissions I cann't even see folders that a BUILTINAdministrator can.
Does it mean that a System Administrator can not really manage all the resources of a Report Server?
Any ideas will be welcomed. Many thanks.

I'm trying to install SQL Server Management studio 2012 on my Windows 7 (x64) standalone laptop. When I click "New SQL stand-alone installation..." it runs a Setup Support Rules check and always fails "Setup Account Privileges". I've looked into the error and I keep getting that I need to change security rules but I don't have that option in window 7. How do I get around this without having to resort to a computer running Windows Server?
I have Visual Studio 2013 premium installed along with Localdb v11. I just want to connect and manage my database engine through SSMS when developing any application.

I have XP Pro SP2 with MDAC 2.8.1022. It had a problem so I tried to reinstall MDAC and got a Fatal Setup Error. This setup does not support installing on this operating system. I downloaded MDAC 2.8 1177 and get the same error.
I thought of uninstalling/reinstalling SP2, but this is a 2 month old Dell Latitude 610 with factory installed XP. There is no Windows Service Pack 2 option listed in the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
There's some other strange things, so I wonder if they are related.
1) I have Paul set up as an administrator account. Some folders like MSSQL show that account with no permissions. I grant all the permissions to Paul for that folder. I come back later and the permissions are gone.
2) I deleted 20 files in Explorer, but 7 of them did not go away. I deleted those 7 again and they instatnly reappeared. I deleted those 7 again and then they finally went away.
3) I get a slow reaction time for things like Windows Explorer and opening and closing programs. This is suprising since it has 2 gig of RAM and 2.3 Gig processor. Could it be a memory handling problem that's causing OS problems. Probably, the memory didn't handle the OS installation well and the whole system is compromised now.

Hi guys,
I am new to this forum and new to SQL.
I have a stored procedure which sets the value of a variable (@owner_logon_name, type sysname) to sa. It then calls sp_add_job in the msdb database, which in turn calls numerous other stored procedures. The ASP page I post down to the server is coming back with an internal server error and the log file shows the following message:
"Only a system administrator can reassign ownership of a job."
Even though the login name was set to sa, it seems to be using another role.
The code I have in my sp is:
exec @ReturnCode = msdb.dbo.sp_add_job @job_id = @JobID output ,
@job_name = @JobName,
@owner_login_name = sa,
@description etc, etc
Can anyone think why it would do this? An explanation of how sp_add_job works would also be much apprciated.

We recently downloaded and installed SQL Express as it was a required program for our new database management software. When trying to install my database management software I was asked to Login to the SQL server. I entered the SQLEXPRESS server, however, I do not have the SA password. When SQL Express installed it did not ask for a password only for a user name and company. I am running Windows Small Business Server with the Administrator and no password. We did not assign a password to the Administrator account yet.
I have tried to leave the password blank using the login SA and I get error message 28000 Login failed for user. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server Connection.
Is there a default password for SA? Or in the alternative, how do I create a user or associate an exising Windows user with a trusted SQL server connection?

I am running a number of SQL instances on my PC. Within the network, I have think server with various System Center components. For compatibility reasons, some features of System Center 2012 R2 had to be delegated to different SQL databases. My question is, because there is now more than one IP address on my system, and each instance of SQL is assigned to its own IP, is there a way to setup DNS and SQL so the namespace points to the desired IP address? For Instance:
MSSQL2008 instance is set to run on = 11.12.13.1
MSSQL2012 is set to run on = 11.12.13.2
IN DNS:
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.1
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.2
If I want to use MSSQL2008 by specifying Mike-PC as the DNS name, how would I do that with 100% accuracy? If there is another way to get the job done, I am more than willing to approach this differently.

I posted this topic and got not response, but I'm pretty desperate so I'll try one more time.
I'm a programmer at a small company but for the past year I've also been relagated to SysAdmin (fun, fun, fun). We less than 25 users (usually no more than 10-15 at one time). We run NT server on a P133, 64MB RAM, 3.5MB & 2.5MB SCUSI hard drives. We run SQL Server on dual P133's, 98MB RAM, 4MB & 2MB SCUSI hard drives. Our systems are pretty junky, they were bought at Microcenter a couple of years ago and some other machines we had bought about the same time have begun dying left and right. Our Server is very slow and we're afraid it's going to poop out on us soon.
I've been put in charge of taking care of this. "Get us a new server, and don't spend too much money." Being a programmer, not and administrator, I have a few questions:
1. Can I buy 1 good server to replace these two? That would mean running our NT File Server and our SQL Server (on NT of course) on the same box. Is that bad or can I do that? The only thing the NT Server is used for is file sharing (mostly images). No applications, no exchange (although maybe in the future), no internet. 2. If yes, should I go with a really fast desktop with a few ATA/66 drives, a smoking chip, tons of memory. Or, should I get a true server with SCUSI drives, ECC memory, RAID capable and all that. Essentially is it better to get a smoking desktop or a lower end/entry level server?
3. I don't quite understand RAID, do I need it? If so, what is it? We need to backup or data somehow.
4. Anything else you think I'll need? Or, could some list some minimum specs?
5. How much should this cost me?
Our main concern is the SQL Server running fast enough. We have a custom Accounting/Order/Inventory system (Access97-front/SQL-Back end ). The database is about 200MB and growing and the largest table has about 100,000 records and we anticipate about 20,000 records a year in that table. We also store tons of images (art company) on our file server and we would like to link our SQL inventory records to those image files.
I'm really kind of in over my head with the administration but the pressure is on. They want me to do this instead of outsourcing and they want to keep in the <=$3500 range (Server & Backup System). Any help or advice of any kind would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I represent a software development house and we have developed a client server system based on SQL Server. Most of our customers have already purchased Enterprise License of SQL Server, therefore they own the SA Login and Password. We are bound to attach our Database with their Server on their machine.
My question is how can we stop a System Administrator of SQL Server to view our Database Structure, Queries, Data installed on their SQL Server on their machine.
Our database structure is a trade secret and we cant reveal the structure to the client.
please answer this question by email to me at farhandotcom@gmail.com
Thanks & Regards

I am getting setup problems with Reporting Services 2005.
When I try to connect through SQL Server Management Studio, the browser in the connect dialog can see the Reporting Services 2005 instance, but when I try to connect, I get an error dialog with the message, "The Report Services instance could not be found (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)"
I manually setup ReportServer and ReportManageer virtual directories in IIS to point to the corresponding directories within the Reporting Services installation. Was I supposed to do this manually? Was the installer supposed to set this up?
Anyway, when I browse to http://localhost/ReportServer/ I get:
* The report server has encountered a configuration error. See the report server log files for more information. (rsServerConfigurationError)
o Access to the path 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.4Reporting ServicesReportServerRSReportServer.config' is denied.
When I browse to http://localhost/ReportManager/ I get:
An error occurred while parsing the configuration file. The ReportServerVirtualDirectory element is missing.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong and what I can do to fix?

Dear all,
I have recently applied the latest cumulative upgrade 3 for SP2 for SQL Server 2005 (KB939537) to have all the hotfixes needed since the SP2, and to correct a specific one : the 50001440 (SQL Server may fail to generate a plan for a complex query that involves cursors and error 8623 occurs - KB940128).
But it is not included in this latest cumulative upgrade package. I read the new policy about CU but I can not know if the 50001440 hotfix is candidate for the CU :
Cumulative update (CU)
€¢
The update can be requested by any customer, regardless of their support offering.
€¢
The update is released every 2 months.
€¢
The update contains the following:
€¢
All previous critical on-demand hotfixes to date.
Fixes for issues that meet hotfix acceptance criteria. These criteria include workaround availability, customer effect, reproducibility, the complexity of the code that must be changed, and so on.
Another bug, the 50001317 (You may receive error messages when you try to log in to an instance of SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server handles many concurrent connections - KB937745) : it is included in the upgrade 2 for SP2 but not in the upgrade3.
So, is it needed to apply each cumulative upgrade or only the latest CU ? And if it is only the latest CU, why are there missing hotfix ?
Thank you very much
Regards,
Emmanuel

I am getting the error: "Cannot connect to WMI provider. Is there way to completely re-install the Configuration Manager? One post suggested the Access denied was Administrator rights but I have full Administrative rights to everything so I don't see that being the problem.
