Setup And Upgrade :: Install New Instance On Server Where Existing Instances Are At Service Pack 3

If I install a new named instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 on a machine that already has 3 named instances that are upgraded to service pack 3, will the install of the new instance overwrite any of the current SP3 files?  Will I have to re-apply SP 3 to the existing instances?

Setup And Upgrade :: Opening Port 1433 Between 2 Clustered Instances?

Nov 23, 2015

We have 2 clustered SQL instances (2 physical servers in each cluster). Instance2 needs to be setup as a linked server on Instance1.

At this time port 1433 between them is not open. I am referring to the port on the network switch, not in the Windows Firewall (ports in Windows Firewall are already open).

Is opening the port between virtual IP-s sufficient? Or does port need to be open between all physical source/destination IP-s as well?

Setup And Upgrade :: Reboot Required To Server To Add SSRS To One Of Many Instances Already Installed?

Jun 9, 2015

Have a production server, 12 Enterprise, and we are adding a new app to an existing instance.  Next app needs SSRS and that was not put in the install request a year ago for the instance.

I do not think a reboot is required but have been wrong before. There are no SPs applied to this server and only last week we were given go ahead from one app vendor to apply SPs.  That would have been done in monthly maintenance cycle next weekend.  Our test server is doing just fine with all apps on SP1.

Setup And Upgrade :: Changing TCP Port Of A Default Instance

Jul 31, 2014

I installed a default SQL Server 2012 instance on Windows Server 2012.I enabled the SQL Browser and changed the TCP port of the instance to 1435. I changed port 1433 to 1435 I was able to connect to the instance using SSMS on another server. Now I have to enter Servername,1435 to make a connection. Why does the SQL Browser not resolve the servername to the right IP address and port 1435? Why am I not able to make a connection when I enter the servername or <servername>MSSQLSERVER? Is a SQL Browser only resolving named instances? This works fine for a named instance. Is there something special about default instances or the SQL Browser?

Setup And Upgrade :: Determine What Port Does Named Instance Are Listening?

Sep 22, 2015

I have a named sql instance on SQL 2012. The issue is that the clients is having problem connecting to it when the firewall is on, this is not consistent. The connection is fine when I disabled the firewall. When I turned the Windows firewall back on, it will work for awhile and it fails. I checked the SQL configuration manager and saw that a dynamic port is assigned to the named instance. I did put that in the firewall rule and unblock it. I also put TCP 1433 and 1434 as well as the browser service port, TCPUDP 2382 and it still didn't work. What is the best way to determine what port does the named instance are listening?

Setup And Upgrade :: Cannot Create Database Object Alert On Clustered Instance

Aug 25, 2015

We have installed 2014 sql server on a stand alone VM and can create alerts without issue.  We recently did a cluster install of 2014, and when trying to create alerts get the following error:

Msg 14262, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_verify_performance_condition, Line 52
The specified object_name ('Databases') does not exist.

Specifically, we are trying to create a database alert on percent log used that will kick off a job to back up the log.

We are on Windows 2012R2 o/s.  In the drop downs in SSMS under alerts, we do not have all the options we have in the stand alone instance - they are not there.  Is this a bug?  Is there a CU?

Setup And Upgrade :: Assign Fixed Amount Of Memory For Multiple Instance In 2014?

Oct 13, 2015

We have a SQL enterprise server 2014 with two installed instance.

First instance for SharePoint 2013 DBs and second instance  Dynamics AX 2012 R3 DBs.

The server has 32 GB of RAM, currently the process usage for first instance is 26 GB and second instance is 700 MB.

Which mean that SharePoint DBs in the first instance is consuming most of the RAM.

My question is there any way to assign a fixed RAM usage for a specific instance without affecting the other instance?

for example 16 GB only first instance and 16 GB to second instance.

Setup And Upgrade :: Activity Monitor Shuts Down If Connect To Instance Its Monitoring With Performance Monitor

Aug 19, 2015

If I'm on a remote machine, meaning a computer not in the WSFC cluster, and I open SSMS 2014, point it to a SQL Instance, and open activity monitor:

1.  I get all the panes and charts except % Processor Time.

2.  Then, if I authenticate to the cluster's domain by mapping a drive with valid domain credentials, I'm free to put performance counters in the Perfmon - - - but SQL Activity Monitor shuts down with“The Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server SQL-V01INSTANCE1..Activity monitor for this instance will be placed into a paused state.Use the context menu in the overview pane to resume the activity monitor.

Additional information:  Access is denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED))(Mscorlib)”

3.  Of course, the Activity monitor can't be resumed via the context menu. Removing counters and closing the perfmon do not work.  I dropped the mapped drive and rebooted the machine.  That brought back 95% of the information in the Activity monitor.

4.  Further experimentation showed that any mapping of drive shares present on the SQL Server to the computer running SSMS cut off functionality of the 'overview' pane in the remote machine's SQL Activity monitor -- the monitor that had been trying to watch the server offering the shares.

Setup And Upgrade :: 2008 R2 Setup UI Has Incomplete List Of Installed Features - Can't Uninstall RS

Jul 23, 2015

We're doing upgrades from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2014. This is blocked due to RS is installed but not configured. Our desired action is to uninstall RS and proceed with the upgrade. But when setuparp.exe is raised, it does not list all the features on the 'Select Features' page.  In fact, it only lists the last 2 shared features (SQ Client Connectivity SDK and Microsoft Sync Framework). However, all items appear to be listed on the 'Select Instance' page including RS. I've seen this issue on 2 of our SQL 2008 R2 Servers already.

MDAC 2.8 Fatal Setup Error. This Setup Does Not Support Installing On This Operating System

Jan 5, 2006

I have XP Pro SP2 with MDAC 2.8.1022.  It had a problem so I tried to reinstall MDAC and got a Fatal Setup Error. This setup does not support installing on this operating system. I downloaded MDAC 2.8 1177 and get the same error.

I thought of uninstalling/reinstalling SP2, but this is a 2 month old Dell Latitude 610 with factory installed XP.  There is no Windows Service Pack 2 option listed in the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

There's some other strange things, so I wonder if they are related.

1) I have Paul set up as an administrator account.  Some folders like MSSQL show that account with no permissions.  I grant all the permissions to Paul for that folder.  I come back later and the permissions are gone.

2) I deleted 20 files in Explorer, but 7 of them did not go away. I deleted those 7 again and they instatnly reappeared.  I deleted those 7 again and then they finally went away.

3) I get a slow reaction time for things like Windows Explorer and opening and closing programs. This is suprising since it has 2 gig of RAM and 2.3 Gig processor. Could it be a memory handling problem that's causing OS problems. Probably, the memory didn't handle the OS installation well and the whole system is compromised now.

Setup And Upgrade :: Error Setup Account Privileges

Nov 15, 2015

I'm trying to install SQL Server Management studio 2012 on my Windows 7 (x64) standalone laptop.  When I click "New SQL stand-alone installation..." it runs a Setup Support Rules check and always fails "Setup Account Privileges". I've looked into the error and I keep getting that I need to change security rules but I don't have that option in window 7.  How do I get around this without having to resort to a computer running Windows Server?

I have Visual Studio 2013 premium installed along with Localdb v11.  I just want to connect and manage my database engine through SSMS when developing any application.

SQL Server 2000 Named Instance/sp4 Install: Restart Later

Jun 26, 2007

We are trying to quickly put together what needs to be accomplished to install a named instance of SQL Server 2000 on an existing production server (also running SQL Server 2000). It appears as if the install will require a reboot. Can the reboot be postponed until after-hours without impacting the default instance of SQL Server?

Also, I see that if certain services are stopped prior to installing sp4 that you can avoid a reboot. However, if we are unable to stop these services (DTC, for example) without impacting the default instance of SQL Server, will the default instance of SQL Server experience any issues if we postpone the post-sp4 reboot until after hours?

Thanks!

Setup And Upgrade :: One Machine 6 IPs - How To Setup DNS For Server

Apr 24, 2015

I am running a number of SQL instances on my PC. Within the network, I have think server with various System Center components. For compatibility reasons, some features of System Center 2012 R2 had to be delegated to different SQL databases. My question is, because there is now more than one IP address on my system, and each instance of SQL is assigned to its own IP, is there a way to setup DNS and SQL so the namespace points to the desired IP address? For Instance:

MSSQL2008 instance is set to run on = 11.12.13.1
MSSQL2012 is set to run on = 11.12.13.2
IN DNS:
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.1
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.2

If I want to use MSSQL2008 by specifying Mike-PC as the DNS name, how would I do that with 100% accuracy? If there is another way to get the job done, I am more than willing to approach this differently.

Date/Time Of Latest SQL Server 2005 Instance Restart

Jan 28, 2008

Is the Date/Time of the latest SQL Server 2005 instance restart stored somewhere in the system catalog?
This value is quite relevant when retrieving information on the costliest unused indexes in the instance.

I know of one way of doing this, which is to search the SQL Logs for this info.
This solution is very unwieldy - we recycle the logs daily and we only keep the logs of the last 7 days.

Upgrade Advisor + DTS + Named Instances

Jun 4, 2007

Hello,
I am after a bit of advice about running the Upgrade Advisor tool on a server that has more than 1 SQL Server instance. My particular focus is DTS on each server.
I tried running the tool, setting up an XML file per SQL Server (including named instances). An example of the XML is I used is included below):
<Configuration> <Server>SQL01</Server> <Instance>INSTANCE01</Instance> <Components> <DataTransformationServices /> </Components></Configuration>

When the tool runs, folders get created for the relevant named instances, but the DTS runs against the default instance only. In other words, the default instance DTS.xml file gets overwritten several times.
Does anyone know if the Upgrade Advisor tool can handle multiple SQL instances on the same server, particularly in realtion to DTS?
I had thought this might have been a limitation as the options in the Report Viewer are "Server" then "Instance or Component", when I am really after "Server", "Instance" AND "Component".

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance, Paul

Upgrade To SQL2005 - Installed Instances

Nov 5, 2006

My SQL2000 databases did not upgrade to SQL2005.  When I look at the Properties>>Options>>Compatibility Level the only options I have is version 7 and version 8... version 9 - which is SQL2005, is not there.

So what did I do?  During the upgrade process  - the installation wizard -  I made a couple of choices that I believe might have lead to my current condition.  The first thing is that I chose to select a installed instance.  The second choice I made was to use a domain user account for the Authentication.  The second selection I believe had nothing to do with the condition, but I did notice that my Systems Admin user account for SQL is no longer availble... which is a problem because now when I log into the SQL Management Console... it's using the domain name to authenticate rather than using the SA name like it was in SQL2000.

So here is what I think the solution is... I need to create a new Server Registration and create the databases in the new instance and then restore the data from SQL2000 to SQL2005 new instance, and then I can change the Compatibility Level to version 9.

The only issue I still don't have an answer for is the authentication into SQL.  I want to not use the domain user account... how can I change this or can I?  This also creates an issue when creating the ODBC connection as it wants to use the domain user account to verify.

So if someone can let me know if this is the right direction?  Also any suggestions... i would greatly appreciate it!

Upgrade From SQL 2000 To SQL 2005, Same Machine For Both Instances?

The best I have managed to achieve is to get SQL2K5 EM looking at my SQL2K databases.

Do I need to uninstall SQL2K before installing SQL2K?

Depending on what combo of SQL I have installed my options on SQL2K install vary.

I am a bit lost at this point.

Anyone know a link to a good white paper type doc that guides me through an install on the same machine.

Thanks In Advance

Installing SQL Express SP1 With Existing User Instances

Jun 14, 2006

Hi,

I've read the readme for the Service Pack 1 for Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/d/1/bd1e0745-0e65-43a5-ac6a-f6173f58d80e/ReadmeSQL2005SP1.htm

But I'm not quite clear on what will happen if you currently have SQL Server Express 2005 installed with User Instances, and then you launch the installer for SP1.

Will it also update the User Instance? If so, how could I tell? When I go to the registry for the User Instance it has the older version value ie.

HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server[instance name]MSSQLServerCurrentVersion = 9.00.1399.06

Shouldn't it be saying 9.00.2047.00?

Does this mean that I have to uninstall the User Instance before installing SP1?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Sam
