Setup And Upgrade :: System Cannot Open Device Or File Specified
May 22, 2013
When I install SQL 2012 on MS Server 2008 R2, I get this error..The following error has occurred: The system cannot open the device or file specified. Click 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.
The file in question is Install_VSShell_CPu32_Action. when I retry, the error is..The following error has occurred:SQL Server Setup has encountered an error when running a Windows Installer file.Windows Installer error message: This update package could not be opened. Verify that the update package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer update package. Windows Installer file:
Windows Installer log file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server110Setup BootstrapLog20130522_143111VSShell_Cpu32_1.logClick 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.
I am using windows 8 and I have only one user in laptop. While installing SQL 2014, I am getting an error (Missing System Administrator). Under SQL Server Agent and SQL Server Database I have select the system user and gave the password but still I am getting the error.
I have used the copy database wizard, but I realized I had forgotten to shrink the transaction log file. So I canceled the wizard. My database, detached by the wizard, has now disappeared. The mdf file is still there, but when I try to attach it manually I get the "create file encountered operating system error 5 while attempting to open the physical file..." error.
I am working on SQL Server 2014 and I want to know, Is it possible to change the location of SQL log file and will it affect to the database if it is possible to change its location?
Have two C# applications - one WinForms desktop app, the other a WinForms smart device app. Both use SQL Server Compact CE 3.5 to store data locally. Both work just fine.
Now the desktop app needs to open and update the .SDF file that is stored on the Windows Mobile device. (Device will be docked via USB.)
What format would the path to the .SDF look like that the WinForms application would need to specify in order to open it?
I tried to open mdf file without any success. Then, all database files icon were changed or grayed out. How can i repair or replace the file to it's original file? ex... the file named "event.mdf" has now a wrong icon not a database icon like before.
I am trying to attach a database to SQL 2005. This database has not previously been attached. I have only just installed SQL.
I get the following message: Unable to open physical file "C:ArrowSQLArr@DataArrow_data.mdf" Operating system error 5: "5(error not found)" (Microsoft SQL Server: Error 5120)".
I have loaded SQL and the database fiel and directory with the same user account which is a local administrator on this machine. I have checked that I have read/write access to the file.
The machine runs Windows Vista Business. SQL has SP 2 loaded. What causes this?
We are trying to attach a database in Sql Server 2005 Express on Windows Vista. It will Show the following Error.
"Unable to open the physical file "Test.mdf". Operating system error 5 :". And then we installed the SQL Server 2005 Service pack 2. This error again comes.Could you please give me the steps to resolve the problem.
We're doing upgrades from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2014. This is blocked due to RS is installed but not configured. Our desired action is to uninstall RS and proceed with the upgrade. But when setuparp.exe is raised, it does not list all the features on the 'Select Features' page. In fact, it only lists the last 2 shared features (SQ Client Connectivity SDK and Microsoft Sync Framework). However, all items appear to be listed on the 'Select Instance' page including RS. I've seen this issue on 2 of our SQL 2008 R2 Servers already.
I'm trying to install SQL Server Management studio 2012 on my Windows 7 (x64) standalone laptop. When I click "New SQL stand-alone installation..." it runs a Setup Support Rules check and always fails "Setup Account Privileges". I've looked into the error and I keep getting that I need to change security rules but I don't have that option in window 7. How do I get around this without having to resort to a computer running Windows Server?
I have Visual Studio 2013 premium installed along with Localdb v11. I just want to connect and manage my database engine through SSMS when developing any application.
I have XP Pro SP2 with MDAC 2.8.1022. It had a problem so I tried to reinstall MDAC and got a Fatal Setup Error. This setup does not support installing on this operating system. I downloaded MDAC 2.8 1177 and get the same error.
I thought of uninstalling/reinstalling SP2, but this is a 2 month old Dell Latitude 610 with factory installed XP. There is no Windows Service Pack 2 option listed in the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
There's some other strange things, so I wonder if they are related.
1) I have Paul set up as an administrator account. Some folders like MSSQL show that account with no permissions. I grant all the permissions to Paul for that folder. I come back later and the permissions are gone.
2) I deleted 20 files in Explorer, but 7 of them did not go away. I deleted those 7 again and they instatnly reappeared. I deleted those 7 again and then they finally went away.
3) I get a slow reaction time for things like Windows Explorer and opening and closing programs. This is suprising since it has 2 gig of RAM and 2.3 Gig processor. Could it be a memory handling problem that's causing OS problems. Probably, the memory didn't handle the OS installation well and the whole system is compromised now.
I am running a number of SQL instances on my PC. Within the network, I have think server with various System Center components. For compatibility reasons, some features of System Center 2012 R2 had to be delegated to different SQL databases. My question is, because there is now more than one IP address on my system, and each instance of SQL is assigned to its own IP, is there a way to setup DNS and SQL so the namespace points to the desired IP address? For Instance:
MSSQL2008 instance is set to run on = 11.12.13.1 MSSQL2012 is set to run on = 11.12.13.2 IN DNS: A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.1 A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.2
If I want to use MSSQL2008 by specifying Mike-PC as the DNS name, how would I do that with 100% accuracy? If there is another way to get the job done, I am more than willing to approach this differently.
Hello all, I am running into an interesting scenario on my desktop. I'm running developer edition on Windows XP Professional (9.00.3042.00 SP2 Developer Edition). OS is autopatched via corporate policy and I saw some patches go in last week. This machine is also a hand-me-down so I don't have a clean install of the databases on the machine but I am local admin.
So, starting last week after a forced remote reboot (also a policy) I noticed a few of the databases didn't start back up. I chalked it up to the hard shutdown and went along my merry way. Friday however I know I shut my machine down nicely and this morning when I booted up, I was in the same state I was last Wenesday. 7 of the 18 databases on my machine came up with
FCB:pen: Operating system error 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.) occurred while creating or opening file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTest.mdf'. Diagnose and correct the operating system error, and retry the operation. and it also logs FCB:pen failed: Could not open file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTest.mdf for file number 1. OS error: 32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.).
I've caught references to the auto close feature being a possible culprit, no dice as the databases in question are set to False. Recovery mode varies on the databases from Simple to Full. If I cycle the SQL Server service, whatever transient issue it was having with those files is gone. As much as I'd love to disable the virus scanner, network security would not be amused. The data and log files appear to have the same permissions as unaffected database files. Nothing's set to read only or archive as I've caught on other forums as possible gremlins. I have sufficient disk space and the databases are set for unrestricted growth.
Any thoughts on what I could look at? If it was everything coming up in RECOVERY_PENDING it's make more sense to me than a hit or miss type of thing I'm experiencing now.
When performing a backup I'm reciving the error message: "System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Cannot open backup device. Operating system error 5(error not found). (Microsoft.SqlServre.Smo)
This is backing up to a network location and I'm able to backup other database on the same server/instance without error so it shouldnt be a permissions issue?why I can backup some databases to this location and not others?
I'm writting an standar application in c# that comunnicates with a sql server 2005 in a mobile device. The mobile device is connected to the pc with an usb wire. In the sample I've made, I've inserted in the form main a datagridview. I go on the wizard to select the data source. I choose a Microsoft SQL Server Mobile Edition data connection. The data source is tge activesync mobile device. I create a new database in the mobile device called test.sdf. The wizard has a button to check the conecttion and it rules. A new connection appears in the server explorer. I add rows through a query. I build the solution and no problem, but when I start the debug session an sqlceexception occurs: Data Source not found. In the database connection that the project has created the connection string is: Data Source ="Mobile Device est.sdf";
I didn't write any code. I just went on the wizards. All the code has been inserted by visual studio 2005.
I want to upgrade my database from SQL Server CE 2.0 to SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition. I'm following a document from this link (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/technologies/ceupgrade.mspx) but I cannot complete the process. The problem is when I try to execute a command line in the device using the upgrade tool. This is the message: The file 'upgrade' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file.
I am trying to take backup on network folder but I am getting below error:
Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 9 Cannot open backup device 'xyz.xy.z.xyabcdexyxyzarchive_2015_7_14_11_14_58.Diff'. Operating system error 1326(Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 9
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
NOTE:- The folder abcde is protected by password , When I try to open the xyz.xy.z.xy, I provide password to connect.
Please provide advice on how to upgrade from v6.5 to v.7.0 where v.6.5 databases are sharing same devices. What do i need to do to put db's on their own device/file. Should I upgrade first or fix on 6.5 side? Does SQL 7.0 rebuild the DB on its own file during upgrade? Thank you....
I've just upgraded my app from .Net 2.0 in VS 2005 to 3.5 in VS 2008, but now I can't open my SQL CE database any more. It falls over on the connection.Open() method, saying I need to run Compact /Repair if this is 3.0 or 3.1 version database (which it is, or was). So I run the compact/repair (full compaction) and it doesn't help at all. I also tried running the upgrade.exe tool that comes with SQL Server CE, but when I try to run it from the command line, it tells me it can't run in Win32 mode! I didn't think it was! Does that mean I can only run it from a DOS prompt before loading the OS or something? There's something on MSDN that says you can upgrade by opening a connection to the CE database in Server explorer and then you'll get a dialog that will upgrade the database for you. But that doesn't happen - it just happily connects. Anyone know what the hell is going on here?
Update: I just noticed in the excpetion message that the "requested version" is 3004180, i.e., it seems to be asking for a 3.0 version database and getting a 3.5 version one, but I can't work out why. Here's the exception, with stack trace etc snipped:
System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException was unhandled Message="You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition database. If this is a SQL Server CE 1.0 or 2.0 database, run upgrade.exe. If this is a SQL Server Compact Edition 3.0 or later database, run Compact / Repair. [ Db version = 3505053,Requested version = 3004180,File name = F:\dotNET projects\Word Learner\bin\Debug\Words.sdf ]"
I am getting the error: "Cannot connect to WMI provider. You do not have permission or the server is unreachable."I tried the solution posted on the Microsoft support page involving a command prompt and the mofcomp "%programfiles(x86)%Microsoft SQL Server<var class="sbody-var"> numbe r</var>Sharedsqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"...This still does not fix the problem, the result of running the above is: Parsing MOF file: C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server110Sharedsqlmgmp roviderxpsp2up.mof...MOF file has been successfully parsed...Storing data in the repository..An error occurred while processing item 1 defined on lines 4 - 7 in file C:Prog
Is there way to completely re-install the Configuration Manager? One post suggested the Access denied was Administrator rights but I have full Administrative rights to everything so I don't see that being the problem.
So, I just downloaded and installed Windows 8 and SQL Server 2014 Developer. I used to have Visual Studio, that seems to be gone now. Can't find it. I can't figure out a way to get to SSIS or SSAS.
I noticed accidentally today on my PATH and discovered that I have several variables for different sql versions. I can understand this as I have upgraded from 2008, to 2012 then 2014. Here are the list of variables
when i install sql server 2005 in cluster. I have error at Setup process screen --> the selected components are being configured.all the components are failed.I am using domain account with administrator account privilege on both server.OS : windows server 2008 on virtual machine..when i install sql server agent is enable to select during setup..
I'm trying to do a SQL 2008 cluster installation.I installed one node and now I'm trying to add a failover cluster node.in the "add Node Rules" I get following message:
Rule Check Result...Rule "SQL Server Database Services feature state" failed. The SQL Server Database Services feature failed when it was initially installed. The feature must be removed before the current scenario can proceed.
