Severe Performance Hit With NCHAR Queries

Nov 22, 2006

Hey there :)

Sorry if I'm asking a dumb question here, but I'm still quite new to MS SQL,
so this problem might appear larger to me than it really is.

I'm trying to create a performance test environment for a Ruby on Rails and
Mongrel setup with an MS SQL Server 2000.

The adapter, mssqlclient, uses some kind of "conversion" for unicode, here's
a quote from the homepage:

"Automatically translate from proper UTF-16LE nvarchar fields in the
database to UTF-8 Ruby Strings you can display in your application"

As far as the local DB designer knows, we're not using UTF16-LE nvarchar
fields, unless it's something that happens implicitly.

Either way, this is how a query from the mssqlclient adapter might look:

SELECT TOP 1 * FROM Item WHERE (Item.Itemnumber = N'45783745')

Response time the first couple of times was upwards of 20+ seconds, after
the sql server has "awaken from its slumber", it's roughly 4 seconds.

Omitting the "N" from the WHERE clause, response time is in milliseconds (as
one would expect, regardless of the fact that there's currently >2.5
million items in the table).

Any tips on how to resolve this? Is the SQL statement bad, or is it a
question of configuring SQL Server correctly?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Daniel Buus :)

Performance Differences Between Queries...

Sep 13, 2004

I am updating a db with data from a file, in this data we have new info, info that has been updated and info that is to be removed from the db.
Now I was wondering which approach results in better performance/shorter executin time:

1. first update excisting values, then insert new ones, and last delete cancelled data

or

2. delete cancelled data and data that will be updated, then insert new and updated info

I get all this data from a file, in that file all rows are similar and there is one column that defines if the data is new, updated or to be deleted (thus all the updates also include the information for the enty that has not been altered).

Improving Performance Of Search Queries

Dec 5, 2007

I have a number of complex search stored procedures that use the following syntax to try to simplify the code.

WHERE @SearchParam IS NULL OR SearchCol = @SearchParam

unfortunately it appears that this is really inefficient as far as the database is concerned.

If I run the following query on the AdventureWorks database (SQL Server 2005 with SP2 and fixes up to v3054)

Code Block
SET STATISTICS IO ON

Declare @CustomerID int
SET @CustomerID = 1

SELECT SalesOrderID
FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader
WHERE @CustomerID IS NULL OR CustomerID = @CustomerID

SELECT SalesOrderID
FROM Sales.SalesOrderHeader
WHERE CustomerID = @CustomerID

Is see that the first select results in 45 logical reads, whereas the second results in only 2 logical reads.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get the benefit of a search procedure that does not have loads of IF blocks, or dynamic SQL without this major performance issue?

Cheers,

Justin

One Query Killing Performance For All Queries

Jan 15, 2008

We have an issue where a cube hasn't been designed properly - when someone queries it with Excel, it is doing a mega-crossjoin. When anyone else tries to do *anything* on the AS server (connect with management studio, etc.) it just hangs. We have to either track down the person running the query (via the flight recorder), or restart the service. Obviously the correct fix is to change the design of the cube - I plan on doing it asap. But it brings up this important question - is there a setting I can change to allow others to use the box while this is going on? Maybe some thread isolation, or parallelism? I'm just throwing out ideas, as I haven't experienced this part of AS administration yet.

Thanks in advance,
John

HELP: Strange Blocking Performance Problem With Simultaneous Queries

Dec 1, 2005

Hello everyone, I am hoping someone can help me with this problem. Iwill say up front that I am not a SQL Server DBA, I am a developer. Ihave an application that sends about 25 simultaneous queries to a SQLServer 2000 Standard Edition SP4 running on Windows 2000 Server with2.5 GB of memory. About 11 of these queries are over views (all overthe same table) and these queries are all done from JDBC but I am notsure that matters. Anyway, initially I had no problem with thesequeries on the tables and the views with about 4 years of information(I don't know how many rows off hand). Then we changed the tables toreplicated tables from another server and that increased the amount ofdata to 15 years worth and also required a simple inner join on 2columns to another table for those views. Now here is the issue. After times of inactivity or other times duringthe day with enough time between my test query run I get what lookslike blocking behavior on the queries to the views (remember these allgo to the same tables). I run my 25 queries and the 11 view queriesall take about 120 seconds each to return (they all are withinmilliseconds of each other like they all sat there and then werereleased for processing at the same time). The rest of the queries arefine. Now if I turn around and immediately run the 25 queries again, they all come back in a few seconds which is the normal amount of time. Also, if I run a query on one of views first (just one) and then runthe 25 queries they all come back in a few seconds as well. This tells me that some caching must be involved since the times are sodifferent between identical queries but I would expect that one of thequeries would cache and thus take longer but the other 10 would befast, not all block for 2 minutes. What is more puzzling is that thisbehavior didn't occur before where now the only differences are:1) 3 times more data (but that shouldn't cause a difference from 3seconds to 120 and all tables have been through the index wizard with aSQL trace file to recommend indexes)2) There is now a join between 2 tables where there wasn't before3) The tables are replicated throughout the day.I would appreciate any insight into this problem as 120 seconds is waytoo long to wait. Thanks in Advance.Chris

Bad Performance In Queries With Jet4.0 And Linked ODBC-tables To SQL-Server 2000

Jul 20, 2005

I changed from Access97 to AccessXP and I have immense performanceproblems.Details:- Access XP MDB with Jet 4.0 ( no ADP-Project )- Linked Tables to SQL-Server 2000 over ODBCI used the SQL Profile to watch the T-SQL-Command which Access ( whocreates the commands?) creates and noticed:1) some Jet-SQL commands with JOINS and Where-Statements aretranslated very well, using sp_prepexe and sp_execute, including thesimilar SQL-Statement as in JET.2) other Jet-SQL commands with JOINS and Where-Statements aretranslated very bad, because the Join wasn´t sent as a join, Accesscollects the data of the individual tables seperately.Access sends much to much data over the network, it is a disaster!3) in Access97 the same command was interpreted wellCould it be possible the Access uses a wrong protocol-stack, perhapsJet to OLEDB, OLEDB to ODBC, ODBC to SQL-Server orJet to ODBC, ODBC to OLEDB and OLEDB to SQL-Server instead ofJet to ODBC and ODBC direct to SQL-ServerDoes anyone knows anything about:- Command-Interpreter of JetODBC, Parameters, how to influence thecommand-interpreter- Protocol-Stack of a Jet4.0 / ODBC / SQL-Server applicationThanks , Andreas

Severe Error Encountered With Synonyms

Oct 10, 2006

we now used synonyms on the version 6 of our peoject, at first it turns out good. Then we migrate a database to the new database, everythings fine, its just a data migration anyway. The target database' structure and DML's wasn't change during migration. then intermittendly, we're encountering "A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded". I said its intermittent because sometime its ok, mostly its not functioning.

This is very painfull because all our scripts has this synonym. All our scripts uses an sp execution logging stored procedured of another database so we created a synonym for those sp's instead of fully qualifying the procedure name.

This is a major issue for us, please advise. You may response here, send me email or email me. Many Thanks.

A Severe Error Occurred On The Current Command.

Aug 23, 2006

I am having problems with an error that I keep receiving. The error message states "A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should
be discarded."This error is popping up when I try to call a specific stored procedure in SQL2005. The error is not specific to ASP.NET code because it also occurs if I try to run the procedure in SQL Server Management Studio. The procedure is exactly the same that is running on an SQL2000 server on a live site, so it apparently is specific to SQL2005.I have not worked much with SQL2005 or SQL cursors in the past and this code was not written by me so I am not sure where to start making changes, if any are needed. The procedure is as follows:ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[spGetAdmins] @userid int, @forDate datetimeASDECLARE @lngTabCount INTEGER, @lngLoopCount INTEGER, @type varchar(15), @id varchar(20), @statement varchar(1000), @useridLocal int, @forDateLocal datetimeSET @useridLocal = @useridSET @forDateLocal = @forDateDECLARE @AdminInfo TABLE (AdminID varchar(20), AdminName varchar(50)) /* check parameters */ IF (@useridLocal <= 0) BEGIN RAISERROR( 'Invalid UserID (%d)', 16, 1, @useridLocal ) END IF (@forDateLocal IS NULL) BEGIN SELECT @forDateLocal = GETDATE() ENDDECLARE profInfo CURSORLOCAL FORWARD_ONLYFOR SELECT ProfileType, ProfileValue FROM tblCSUserProfile WHERE UserID = @useridLocal and (StartDate is not null or StartDate <= @forDateLocal ) and (EndDate is null or EndDate > @forDateLocal ) ORDER BY ProfileTypeOPEN profInfoFETCH profInfo INTO @type, @idWHILE @@Fetch_Status = 0 BEGIN IF @id = '*' BEGIN INSERT INTO @AdminInfo VALUES ('*', '* Everything') END ELSE BEGIN INSERT INTO @AdminInfo SELECT adm.[ADM_CODE], adm.[ADMIN_NAM] FROM OPENROWSET('SQLOLEDB', 'server'; 'database'; 'password', [table]) AS adm WHERE adm.[ADM_CODE] = @id END FETCH profInfo INTO @type, @id ENDCLOSE profInfoDEALLOCATE profInfoSELECT DISTINCT(UPPER(AdminID)) AS AdminCodeFROM @AdminInfo GROUP BY AdminIDORDER BY AdminCode

CLR UDAGG Returns Severe Error On Certain Cases

Jun 18, 2007

Hi peoples,

I have created a custom CLR user define aggregate function based on the example that i found at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms131056(SQL.90).aspx.

It works great until i discovered that it will failed if i try to do either one of the following:

query a large records e.g: more than 4k records
has IS NULL in my where clause e.g: WHERE myConcatenatedFld IS NULL

Other than these two, it works perfectly fine.

Here is the error that i got:

Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0

A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

I have attached the Concatenate class that i used in my UDAGG.

A Severe Error Occurred On The Current Command. The Results, If Any, Should Be Ignored

Feb 1, 2008

I got the above error executing a stored procedure from .Net app and I isolated the issue on the following sql statement inside the sp. I executed the statement manually inside the MSSQL Mgt Studio and got the same error as above. Here is the sql statement:
SELECT F1,F2,F3,F4,F5,F6,F7,F8,F9,F10,F11,F12,F13,F14,F15,F16,F17,F18,F19,F20,F21,F22,F23,F24,F25,F26,F27,F28,F29 from OpenRowset('MSDASQL', 'Driver={Microsoft Text Driver (*.txt; *.csv)};DefaultDir=E:\TPSDATA\az\;','select * from prohist.csv where f1 < 0 ')

the data file exists in the directory 'E: psdataazprohist.csv' . I'm running on SQL2005 version 9.00.3054.00. Any ideas what the problem is? Appreciate any feedback

A Severe Error Occurred On The Current Command. The Results, If Any, Should Be Discarded.

Aug 27, 2002

Hi,

I am hosting my ASP.NET application on a Host and after some time I get this error
(Don't get it on my development machine):

A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

And then it says this on the same page:

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

[SqlException: A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.]

ASPNetPortal.Global.Application_BeginRequest(Object sender, EventArgs e)
System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.Execute() +60
System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously)

I thought this is a problem with max pool size and I did it max pool size = 5000, now application runs ok for some time and then produces this error but some times this comes very soon.

As a solution, I have to copy my dll in bin directory again and application restarts and works properly but then after some time this happenes again.

Please let me know whats the problem.
I checked all of my SqlDataReaders and SqlConnections are closed properly.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Rahul.

I am trying to run this script and then error from above... link_kance_doc is link to table on other server. Strange thing is when I run this same script on server 3 with same link to file DB server it works. It also works when runed on file DB server.
Also, if I dont use WHERE CONTRAINS SQL does return Dataset..

DBCC SHRINKFILE Gives A Severe Error Occurred On The Current Command.

Oct 14, 2007

I am using SQL Server SP 2 on Windows 2003 Server Standard edition:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3042.00 (Intel X86)
Feb 9 2007 22:47:07
Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation
Standard Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

I have a datbase that's rather large. The log file is 94656 pages, and the data file itself is 94197200 pages. There's only one data file and one log file. The database passes DBCC CHEKCDATABASE with no errors.

When I run DBCC SHRINKDATABASE against the database, the command runs for about twenty seconds then produces this error:

Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

I can't find anything interesting in the ERRORLOG around the time that I run this command. The error appears if I use the TRUNCATEONLY option or not.

How do I fix this problem?

And in general, why are the engine errors in SQL Server so confusing and not directly actionable?

Get LangId By Nchar(1)

Apr 14, 2006

Is it
possible in SQL 2005 to determine to which language symbol nchar(1) is
referred?

If
languages differ greatly, say, like Russian and English, can one write a function,
which, under the given alphabet, can determine to what language the symbol
belongs?

If the
languages have a similar alphabet, one is faced with the difficulties. For
example, it is needed to distinguish characters of American English from those
of Australian English or of English from those of any other European language
that uses almost the same alphabet. I don€™t know how to solve this problem.
What can you advise?

The final task
is to scan in Internet a great number of Web pages in various languages and to
make up a large dictionary, where each word will be entered in its language
group. It is in principle too important to select words in different languages
that use the same alphabet. Initial data for word selection will enter the
server in NTEXT format.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Inline Table-valued Function - A Severe Error Occurred

Jan 21, 2015

I'm attempting to convert some INSERT-EXEC structures into table-valued functions because the procedures are deeply nested and INSERT-EXEC doesn't like nesting (Error 3915: Cannot use the ROLLBACK statement within an INSERT-EXEC statement)

The procedure has a single select statement, so I created an inline table-valued function. When I ran it with sample data, I received this error (yes, twice):

Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.
Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

After ruling out obvious mistakes, I started to deconstruct the select statement with its CTE and TVP. The result is the following, built in my local sandbox database:

CREATE TYPE test_list AS TABLE(a int);
GO
CREATE FUNCTION test_function (@p int, @theTable test_list READONLY)
RETURNS TABLE
AS
RETURN (
WITH cte
AS (SELECT a FROM @theTable)
SELECT cte.a
FROM cte);
GO
DECLARE @t test_list;
INSERT @t VALUES(1);
SELECT * FROM test_function(1, @t);

When I run this, I get the same error as noted above. I'm running on version 10.50.4000.0, Developer Edition. (2008 R2 SP2)

The function above does just about nothing and has redundancies because I stripped the actual function down to the essential elements to cause the error. The essential elements are:

- One of the parameters is a table-valued parameter (the UDTT definition does not seem to matter)

- The SELECT statement has a CTE

- The TVP is accessed within the CTE

- The outer FROM clause references the CTE

- There is also a scalar parameter on the function (scalar type does not seem to matter).

- The scalar parameter precedes the TVP in the parameter list.

So I have an easy work-around: put the TVP first in the parameter list.

Severe Error Occurring When Creating Assembly With External Access Permission

Jul 11, 2006

I had created a CLR function in my db and was able to execute it successfully a couple of months ago. But when I tried to execute it today it was throwing errors saying there was something wrong with the permissions on the assembly. So I decided to drop everything and recreate it except I can not longer create the assembly with EXTERNAL ACCESS permissions. Whenever I try to create the assembly I get the followng error:

Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0

A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0

A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

I also tried to create the assembly with Unsafe permissions and got the same error. Does anyone know why this error would be occurring now? I tried creating the same assembly on a different SQL 2005 server and it creates successfully and can be executed successfully. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

Conversion From Char To Nchar

Apr 16, 2004

Hello,

I am trying to convert a single code page MS Server database into a unicode database, using the unicode data types,NCHAR, NVARCHAR, NTEXT. The problem is that in the original database, indexes and constraints have been defined on the tables whose configurations need to be changed. As a result, the ALTER TABLE command fails. Are there any other alternative solutions?
Also, data from the old database needs to be preserved. The objective is to create a unicode database which keeps the old data intact as well as accepts the new data in unicode.
It would be great if you could help!
Thanks,
Sheetal.

Nchar To Decimal..which Transformation

May 24, 2007

Hi,
I selected the columns which i need in the data source itself and i need 3 columns, one will direclty go to the destination without any change/transformation and about the other two i need to do few lookups.

When i try to do lookup for One column which has the datatype in the source as nchar(3) though the date in the column is a number(like 150,160,170 and so on), my lookup table(a dimension in DW) where i want to get the actual key by looking up with this number doesnt allow me to map to the dimension in the DW, as the Dimension has this column datatype as decimal (3,0)....i tried the datatype conversion to convert the nchar to decimal but it doesnt transform i dont know why...probably i am doing some mistake...Could someone suggest how to deal with this and which transformation to use..?
I'd really appreciate if someone on this forum suggest how to deal with this..?

thanks

I tried all the ways i can and still i get the same error..:

[OLE DB Source [1]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR.
An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E07. An OLE

Severe Error After Installing SQL2005 SP2 Query To Linked Server Foxpro With Oledb

Oct 24, 2007

After installing sql2005 sp2 a simple select query to a linked server reports the following error message:

Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.
Before installing SP2 we used sql2005 without any service packs, the linked server worked fine.

The linked server is a Visual FoxPro database.

After uninstalling and installing the 'Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Visual FoxPro 9.0' the issue stil remains.

Differences In Results Of Nchar() And Unicode() Fu

Apr 3, 2008

Hi,

I am working on an application that uses accent characters.

SELECT nchar(256) returns A. But if I do

SELECT Unicode(A) , then it returns 65 i.e. the value for simple 'A' character. I am confused, because I have data in nvarchar fields,

but when I do string comparison then A and A are treated as equal.

Please let me know, what could be the issue.

Thanks

When I tried to insert armenian by doing the following
insert into tablex (field1) values (N'testdata')
it does not display in query analyzer or in the database as armenian.
When I copy this to word it does not convert it.

What else am I supposed to do to get that information to redisplay the correct way and I would appreciate any tutorials or samples you can show or direct me to.
