Silent SQL SE 2005 Install Headaches...

Yet another roadblock: Does the standard SQL SE 2005 not install any of the query commands? (isql, isqlw, or osql.exe's). I could have sworn that they were, but every time I go to test the install on my VM none of them are ever installed. If it doesn't is it included in the advanced version of it (which I'd really rather not do)? If still no what's the easiest option I still have open? Can I have my app connect to the master db and run a restore script from the app? I've been arm wrestling with this install for over a week and it's just about brow-beaten me completely.

I can't get SQL Server 2005 to update to SP2 in either silent or unattended mode. None of the standard switches work. I've used -s, -m, /q, /qb, and /qn all with no favorable result. I am still prompted for user input at every screen. Suprisingly I've had no such problems with the express edition, just the server itself. Is there a way to make this thing work? Here is the line I've been feeding to the installer.
"<SERVER_PATH>SQL Serversql2005SP2.exe" start /wait setup.exe /qb /settings "C:SQLSettings.ini" /L*v "C:SQLInstall.log" /norestart
I have also tried the following since it looks like the file that is unpacked by the SP2 install is actually hotfix.exe

I'm using the latest version of SQLEXPR32.EXE found here :

Here is the command line that fails :
"sqlexpr32.exe -q /norebootchk /qn reboot=ReallySuppress

Interrestingly, when the following command line is used to launch the setup,
it completes successfully :
"sqlexpr32.exe /norebootchk reboot=ReallySuppress INSTANCENAME=MYINSTANCE
SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=mypassword SQLAUTOSTART=1"
The only difference between the two is the quiet switches used in the first
case : "-q" and "/qn"
After spending some time to understand what is going wrong, it seems that in
quied mode, Setup Prerequisite 'SQL Native Client' is not installed. Then
the remaining part of the setup fails because of this.
Any help appreciated.

Hi,
I would be very grateful if someone could take a look at my command line install and offer advice on if I am doing it correctly.
The reason I am asking is because I cannot seem to get the server installed without having errors during the installation:
"The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with service-specific error 17113 (0x42D9)"
Looking at the server error log indicates that master.mdf was not in the data directory (I have however specified a different data directory for ease of backup by our software and this is created during the install but does not have this database in the data directory - it is however in the template data directory!
I also get this error when the SQL Server service is started:
"The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service terminated with service-specific error 3417 (0xD59)."
All advice is welcome. Please see below my batch file. Also, if you think I should do this in a different way then please let me know. I basically want to install SQL server on a customer computer and automate the install so the custoemr does not need to enter any information.
The goal of this install is:
[1] Deply a custom .Net application and SQL server at the same time on the same computer without user input.
[2] Allow remote .Net applications (designed by myself also) to connect over a LAN (and later maybe over a WAN) to the database to the above database.

I have a desktop application in which I use Sql Server CE.
It all works well on my development machine.
It also works on other machines if I copy the sql dll files in the same path as the .exe
I'm trying to avoid all kinds of user interaction. They don't need to know that I'm about to install Sql Server CE really
So I'm hoping to avoid writing in the manual that the user should install SQLServerCE31-EN.msi, which I think is the correct install package.
So my question is: How do you silently/unattended install Sql Server CE on the desktop?

Hi all,
After doing a silent install of the MSDE, my application cannot access the database that is loaded on the local machine -
I am getting an error stating - 'login failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Not associated witha trusted SQL server connection'
Is there are parameter or something that i need to change in my UDL??
or is there a way to tell the server to work in non-trusted inviroment via the OSQL program???

Hi,
I'm doing a silent install of SQLServer Express 2005 as explained in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259.aspx .
I am setting DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=2 because I want to enable TCP/IP protocol at install time.
However it seems that per default SQLServer is configured to use dynamic TCP/IP ports, forcing me to contact the SQLBrowser.
How can I switch to a fixed port, say 1433, at install time?

I'm still doing some research but I thought I'd slap a quick post up here anyway. I'm trying to create a small 'setup and deployment' project in studio 2005 that includes a prerequisite (sqlexpress). The one thing I've noticed is that there is not an option to install this silently by providing the executable with the appropriate switches. I could easily write my own small utility to do the work or I could use a third-party component like NSIS, however, I'm quite simply amazed that this feature was left out of studio 2005. It's quite possible I'm missing something...any feedback is appreciated 100 times over!

I'm currently building an MSI to install SQL Express and want to install as a new instance, not the default instance, and not into the SQLEXPRESS instance either.
I saw the package.xml for Express in my VS Studio install. How would I go about using this? Or would I have to modify the MSI via Orca or something? I hope not. Wouldn't have a clue where to start.
In short, regardless if there is already an SQL Express instance on the machine or not, I need to silently install a fresh new instance of the server engine only, no client tools except sqlcmd.exe
I have seen that MS would advise that everyone use the SQLEXPRESS instance but I don't agree with it. I don't want other application installs trampling over my server settings and I don't want to trample over others. For example, expose others to TCPIP and CLR when they don't need it, and conversely others swithing them off in a shared server instance when I do need them.

Sorry if this is a very simple couple of questions, i've tried searching the docs but I'm not even sure which docs I should be reading!
We run a few dedicated web servers with our web host. A new one of which has sql server 2005 on it until now we've only ever used 2000.
Anyway I wanted to restore a 2000 database into 2005 and so logged into the machine for the first time, there was no management server installed just Sql Server configuration manager, fine I thought i'd be able to use SQL Express built into visual studio (2008) on my own machine. However when trying to connect I realised I didn't know the admin login details so called the host, they said there are no login details because there is no management software installed on the server and they'll install the Express version. Is this correct? Can you install SQL Server without an administrative login and you then can't connect to it until you've installed the management console?
Secondly, As I mentioned I've got SQL Express installed as part of a visual studio 2008 install, we also have a copy of SQL Server 2005 standard for internal use only, I tried to use this to install the necessary client tools and it tells me I can't because I have a higher version already installed?
Begining to wish I'd taken a look at 2005 much earlier than now as it seems like quite a big jump from 2000 in terms of management and setup...
Any pointers much appreciated.

I'm able to install SQL 2005 Express using a template.ini, and use the option DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=2 in order to enable TCP/IP. However, I then manually need to open SQL Server Config Manager > SQL Network Config > Protocols for SQL > TCP/IP > "IP Addresses" tab > change all "enabled" options to "yes".
Is there an automated way to do this?

When doing a unattended install of Microsoft SQL Server Express, I have a problem specifing the service to installed to be run under the as local system account.
I'm using: SQLACCOUNT & SQLPASSWORD parameters but it just won't work.
As default SQL Server is installed using the NETWORK SERVICE account, this causes the database to be read-only. What I want is to specifiy in the script that the service should run under the LOCAL SYSTEM account instead. This must also be OS-language independent.
I've tried:
SQLACCOUNT=NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM
SQLACCOUNT=NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SYSTEM
SQLACCOUNT=NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SERVICE
SQLACCOUNT=SYSTEM
SQLACCOUNT=BUILT-INSYSTEM
etc.
and even some different SID as:
S-1-5-18
S-1-5-19
All with no password with the SQLPASSWORD parameter:

I still getting the same error while validating the service account.
Is there someone else who knows what I'm doing wrong?

Trying to install a service pack on SQL 2000 node, and Install shield keeps returning this error, .

I have made user permissions and profiles exist
I have copied install files to both local and remote locations
I know the response €“ Installshield cannot find the silent response file, but SQL setup creates this on its own.
Short of bringing this production system down and re-installing on both nodes ( I did test this on a non-prod box by the way, no issues), I am at a loss

OK, heres the situation:
I am using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition along with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on the same computer. ALL I WANT TO DO IS MAKE A SIMPLE CONNECTION TO THE DB. I have tried using every possible type of connection string that I can find on the internet (of which there seems to be WAY too many), but none of them seem to work. I can't believe how difficult this is. Any ideas? I am using windows authentication, and the management server utility connects fine. So this is really annoying. PLEASE HELP

Greetings all,This should be an easy task, and Im sure it is, but as many times as I havetried, I cant seem to get this to work properly.We changed ISPs recently from a shared host to a co-located server, and ourformer host was nice enough to send us a backup of our old SQL2000 database(about 5MB).I went into Enterprise Manager, created an empty database with the same nameand used the Restore Backup tool successfully. I took a look at the db andsaw all the Tables and data intact.Next I wanted to re-create the DSN to match the old one so that I wouldnthave to fiddle with any of the old connection strings in my asp pages.Thats where the fun began. The old DSN was created by our host via an emailrequest and I never got a look at the actual creation process of that DSN.I created one on our colo server with the same name, but it would only passthe connection tests when I used the Windows User Authentication rather thanSQL Server Authentication. No big deal I figured, and just went ahead andset it up using the same DSN name.Next I tried the main.asp page to test the DSN and lo and behold I got theODBC connection errors. I tinkered with the connection strings a bit andmanaged to get a wide variety of connection errors and fine-tuned to thepoint that it said "Unable to login with user 'SERVER169/nacog'". At thispoint, I went into Enterprise manager and added 'nacog' to the User list andthe connection string no longer produced errors. I am currently running Windows XP Professional Service Pack2. It already has MSDE & SQL Server 2000 installed (although I just uninstalled MSDE in the vain hope that it might present the installer with a more straightforward upgrade).
I have tried installing with the default instance & a new instance (I don't really care - I just need to install the darn thing). I just want the basic database & Books On-line, nothing fancy.

I suppose an error dialog (or log message) that actually told you what is wrong and then what to do is too much to ask for. (Or an installer than just copied all the files into place). :(

I never installed previous beta versions on my computer before. But now I have some serious problem after an incomplete de-install and a re-install of SQL server 2005 express advanced. I hope anybody can help me to solve this. Because the first installation eas not succesfull I had to do an de-install. I have tried to unstall through start/control panel/ add-remove programms and even there not all programs were removed. And that caused the problem. After that I wanted to re-install again but an msi file was missing. So I did a de-install agian. Tried to re-install again but with a lot of errors. After looking at the library I found a program: Windows Install CleanUp. I installed it and that even gives an error for all programs installed with SQL 2005.
After that I ran a program called MsiInv to clean but without any succes because this program reported a run-tim error. I have all reports on my computer but don't know how to attach them. If you think you can help me I could send you all the reports.

Hi all,I am having trouble getting linked Oracle 9 server in MS SQL Server2005 Express to work properly. My machine is running Windows XP.The Microsoft and Oracle OLE DB Providers have problems dealing withOracle's Numeric Data Type, so I decided to use Microsoft's OLE DB forODBC Provider and an Oracle ODBC source. When using the Microsoft ODBCfor Oracle Driver in my ODBC source I have inconsistent behavior.Sometimes my queries are processed properly, then other times I get thefollowing errorOLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]".Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL"for linked server "ODBCBEAST".I have no idea why sometimes I can connect to the linked server with noproblems andwhy other times it performs like this. I'm not changing anything aboutthe system I can think of. When I use an Oracle client (PL/SQL) I haveabsolutely no problems connecting. TNSPING returns that the connectionis good.This is unacceptable so I decided to try my luck with the Oracle 10gODBC driver. However when I use this and perform an openquery selectagainst the linked server I get back only 11 rows, when I know that thedatabase has over 100 rows (in fact when using the Microsoft ODBCdriver and it works that's what I get). I figured maybe the buffersetting needed to be raised in the ODBC configuration so I took it from64000 to 600000 (a magnitude of 10) but I still get back only 11 rows.I'm at my wit's end.Any suggestions on resolving one or the other problem would be muchappreciated.Thanks much

I went to one of the Microsoft "Ready To Launch" events over a year ago. Microsoft was gracious and gave everyone who attended a free copy of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. I have installed the Visual Studio and use it all of the time. I also installed the SQL server 2005 but I can not find the application on my computer. After the install the only items that appear to have been installed are the following:
SQL Server Configuration tools(SQL Server Configuration manager,SQL Server Error and usage reporting, SQL Server surface area confiuration, Reporting Services configuration). There is also a menu icon labeled "Microsoft SQL server upgrade advisor" and SQL server upgraded wizard.
That is all. I can't find anything that is analogus to the Enterprise manager that was in SQL server 2000 or anything that is analogous to Query Analyzer of 2005.
Can someone help me out? We use SQL server 2005 so I know how it looks. I just can't see where it insalled. I don't think it did?

Hello,
The need is to redistribute and install SQL Express in the silent mode. Looks like the current license does not allow to redistribute SQL Express in a way other than self-unpacking archive (we need sqlexpr_adv.exe). It seems that the way to do it is:
1. Unpack this archive in the silent mode to the default temp directory, without any dialogs popping up.
2. Proceed with the installation of the unpacked files in the silent mode.
No prob with 2), but we don€™t really know how to deal with 1).
Is there any way to get a full list of command-line parameters for sqlexpr_adv.exe, including the parameter for the silent unpacking?
