Simple Workgroup (Like Access) Use Of SQL Express ??

Feb 19, 2007

Hi all,

In the past if we wanted to provide an application with simple (multi-user) database facilities, we would use an Access mdb database which we could basically xcopy deploy to the client. Share the folder across the network and apart from the limitations of mdb databases it would work !!!

With all the advancements in databases ! we have moved on to SQL Express - touted as the thing to use and the replacement for MSDE and MDB databases. But hang on a minute !! It doesn't work like that ! You can't deploy Express like we used to with MDB databases - the default Express database doesn't allow multi-access ?? and if you can't xcopy deploy the Express database. The 'user Instance' thing is useless - basically every user gets their own copy of the database !!! How many developers asked Microsoft for that one!! It's crazy!!

We just need to copy our exe files and the mdf file share across a workgroup and bingo network version of our software - it's not brain surgery - Is it! We don't need mountains of security - we need (FIRST OF ALL) easy deployment.

Please tell me I've got it wrong and you can deploy a SQL Express based application without jumping thru hoops ????

Regards

Steve

How To Set Access Workgroup

Jan 20, 2006

My package is to copy data from an Access 97 db into a SQL2k5 table.

Problem is that the 'mdb' is subscribed to a 'mdw' workgroup and I have been unable to workout / read how to get the SSIS manager to join the workgroup. Connection fails because "...you don't have necessary permission..."

I was able to do this previously for SQL 2k by messing with the registry, but I'm now on unfamiliar teritory.

Any answers? Cheers.

Express Vs Workgroup - Should I Upgrade?

Apr 26, 2007

Hello,

I am currently hosting my ecommerce site on a dedicated server with dual AMD processors and 2 gigs of ram. I have on average 20 people on the site at one time.

on this server i have sql express, from which i understand, only utilizes one of the processors and 1gig of ram. I have the choice to pay an extra 150 a month to have my host put sql workgroup on my system.

My question is, will i notice any kind of real performace boost by upgrading. Or at the level that i am at, there wont be much difference?

Any help would be very useful.

SQL Express Or Workgroup? How Do I Tell What Is Installed And Where?

Apr 5, 2007

Hi guys,

I am a Systems Engineer and was sent on a job to a site that has a newly created SBS 2003 R2 Premium box which was OEM pre-installed from Dell. The SBS install was evidently finished off by the I.T. guys at the site. Now along comes some software house to install their propritery application. During this install process, the software guy was unable to find an instance of SQL running and installs SQL 2005 Express and the Express Studio management console. He installs his application and before he leaves says to the I.T. guys "Oh and by the way, there is a 4GB limit per database on SQL Express. You will have to change that to workgroup edition before the data grows too big. Have a nice day byeee!!!".

The I.T. guys go "Huh? Lets call James." So now I have to get this database off the SQL Express instance and onto a workgroup instance. I understand about detaching a database and re-attaching it. No prob there. What is confusing me is when I look at the default instance which should be a Workgroup instance, all I see is an Express instance.

What I am planning to do is rip out all the SQL 2005 stuff, leaving behind only Sharepoint, SBSmonitoring and WSUS stuff. The, using the SBS Premium cd's, install SQL 2005 again and updating the service packs for it again. Then mount the databases under it and get the software guys back in to reconfigure their application if need be.

Thing is, I have no idea how to sort it all out other than "Add remove programs" in control panel and remove the SQL 2005 stuff. What scares me however, is the thought of also removing the Sharepoint, WSUS and SBSMonitoring databases too.

Can someone help me with a procedure for sorting it out? How can I tell what I should uninstall and what I shouldn't? How do I tell if workgroup is already there and why did express steal the default instance?

Cheers

James

Client On Domain Cannot Access SQL Server On Workgroup

Oct 12, 2007

Hi,

I have a quick question regarding domains and workgroups.

Currently I am working on an issue in the office of a small business. Right now there are 3 client computers that connect to a dell server running windows std. server 2003. The server has sql running on it that takes care of the invoicing system. Two out of the three work stations are able to use the database fine, but there is one that is unable to connect to the database. The only different that I could find is that the two workstations that DO work are currently set to use a workgroup, whereas the one workstation that does NOT work is set to use a domain...... I tried switching that computer to workgroup, but then I was unable to login as the normal user that I had always logged in as before.....

What can I do to solve this dilemma?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this, and if it is, if someone would point me to the correct one I would appreciate it.

Thanks
-steve

Sharing SQL Server Express Among Workgroup

Sep 27, 2005

Hello -- Please excuse my extreme newbieness -- trying to get up to speed fast on SQL Server Express for work. I've been able to set up the software, create a database, and access it with no problems on my local computer, but I need to make the database available to other computers in my workgroup. I followed instructions -- enabled TCP/IP and Named Pipes and turned on SQL Server Browser, and I was actually able to manipulate one system database (the "master" database) from another computer but not any other databases, not even the other system databases. I can connect to any of the databases with the SQLCMD commands, but if I try to do any SELECT commands (other than in "master") I get an error: "SELECT permission denied on object '[MyTable]', database '[MyDatabase]', schema 'dbo'". I was only able to get into "master" after adding "guest" as a user, but adding this user to the other databases has no effect. One interesting thing: When I used the sp_table_privileges command on each database, all but "master" showed all privileges being granted to and from "dbo", but "master" didn't show anything being granted to or from anybody. Does anyone know what could be going on here? Am I missing something obvious? Thanks for any and all help!

I Need To Migrate From Sql 2005 Express To Sql Workgroup Edition

Jun 6, 2006

hello,

i have no idea what i am doing here and could use some help from someone who knows what they are doing.

i have a proliant ml350 g3 server running windows 2003 server with sql express 2005 software.

all the databases are running in compatibility sql 7 mode.

I would like them to be in sql 2005 mode if possible. Is there a way to upgrade the databases in the process?

here's a plan I came up with:

take sql workgroup 2005 edition evaluation, install it on a machine.

Mount all databases on the machine.

Wipe out the sql express 2005 machine, reinstall workgroup edition on the new server.

but here is my question

is there a way to migrate the data from the workgroup edition over to the new server through a DTS copy process, and if so, will it create a new version of the databases with the proper collation or the proper english?

please let me know. if this works, i will be thrilled!

Error 28092 When Upgrading From Express To Workgroup Edition

Feb 1, 2007

Hello,

when I try to upgrade SQL Server 2005 using this command line:

setup.exe /qb SKUUPGRADE=1 UPGRADE=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=Z1 SQLACCOUNT=NT-AUTORITÄTSYSTEM SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=XXXXXX

I get error 28092 (administrator rights needed).

It seems like the upgrade tries to use Windows authentification although I've told it to use SQL Server authentification. Or did I miss a parameter in my command line?

If I do the upgrade manually it works without needing Windows authentification.

I want to create an SQLCLR project "HelloWorld" by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. But I am still not sure how to get it started, because I do not understand the following things:
(1) Pipe Name for a User Instance, (2) Enabling (or Disabling) the CLR by using Transact-SQL, (3) Creating a Transact-SQL script, (4) Creating an Assembly, (5) Creating a backup device, etc. I need to see some simple examples of SQLCLR by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. SQL Server Express Upgrade To SQL Server 2005 Workgroup

May 7, 2008

Hi All,

A client of mine was using SQL Express and soon realised this doesn't meet his needs performance or database size wise. He also realised that SQL Server 2005 Workgroup came free with his R2 version of SBS.

So in essence, I have been trying to find the Microsoft recommended way to upgrade from Express to Workgroup. I have not been able to find a step-by-step guide and to add to my confusion, when I run the work-group installer it tells me to run the installer with a switch which I have gone ahead and done but when selecting components it has all of them defaulted to blanked out.

Surely the process for an in-place upgrade should not be so technical as I am finding it ? To my mind, the natural progression would be to upgrade express to a better capable version of 2005 and should be as easy as pie.

Anyway, I am basically looking for a step-by-step guide on how to upgrade to get it done right the first time as opposed to upgrading and than realised some remenants of Express are still larking about causing trouble.

QS

Simple SQL Server Express Question

Jun 25, 2007

Hi all,I've just installed Express on my Vista notebook and I'm having a few problems.Maybe this is just a conceptual problem on my side but I expected to see a server process (in other versions of SQL server I've used there has been an icon in the server tray of the taskbar). When I open "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express" I also expected to see a database instance running locally I can connect to (from other research this instance appears to be called SQLEXPRESS). There isn't one.
If I select server type "database engine" on the "connect to server" dialog there are no instances displayed in the "Server Name" field. "Browsing for others" shows nothing under "local servers" which doesn't seem right to me.If I change "server type" to "SQL SERVER COMPACT EDITION" (which doesn't seem right either as I thought "compact edition" was something else) I can have an option to create a database file

Additional information:
I downloaded SQL server express today from this url:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/. I downloaded the advanced services toolkit edition as I thought I may was well have all the bells and whistles to play around with.Any ideas?thanksJoel

Using VB2005 Express To Access A SS2005 Express Edition DB: O/S Error 32

Feb 4, 2006

Looking for help in diagnosing this error:

Unable to open the physical file "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDatacartracker.mdf". Operating system error 32: "32(error not found)".
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDatacartracker.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.

I am using Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition along with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

Now here's what I did:

Rather than use the Database Explorer within VB2005 EE to create my database, I thought I would try creating my database externally using the downloadable "SQL Server Management Studio Express" tool. (I figured that if I had a stable data model for my database, I could side-step the copying/overwriting issues that come with creating a database as part of a VB solution.)

So having gotten my database setup and populated with some sample data, I am now trying to connect to it from Visual Basic. In VB (in the context of working on a VB Solution), I do the following:

Select Add New Data Source... from the Data menu to bring up the Data Source Configuration Wizard.
Choose "Database" for the data source type and click Next.
Click "New Connection..." to bring up the Add Connection dialogue.

For data source I choose "Microsoft SQL Server Database File", with ".NET Framework Data Provider..." as the data provider.
Navigate to my existing database file (in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" folder).
Use Windows Authentication.

When I click "Test Connection" or just click "OK", i get the Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition error shown at the top of this message.

Is this occuring because I'm trying to access my database as an .MDF file rather than through Named Pipes / Shared Memory / TCP/IP? If this is the case, is there any way that I can tell VB2005 EE to use Named Pipes / Shared Memory / TCP/IP? Is this a fundamental limitation of VB2005 EE?

Thanks in advance to the guru who is able to explain this to me...

SQL 2005 Express Timeout On Simple Queries

I have made a simple application with VB6 and SQL 2005 Express.

And after testing it in a network simulated with Virtual-Machine Workstation, the "real world" application was first getting slower and slower, and finally giving timeout errors.

It is even difficult to connect. The application times out always at 30 secs although the ado connection timeout was established longer (45)

I have checked on the machine where the server is installed, just in case the slow down was due to network problems, but it fail locally too.

Any help is wellcome

SQL Server Express Excruciatingly Slow With Simple Quries

Mar 10, 2008

I am running simple queries against test SQL Express installation and they take a very long time to return data. I have two SQL Express instances installed on colleagues' machines to which I connect for my testing and both exhibit the same problem. The setup is Windows XP SP 2 with 2 GB RAM and 3.6 GHz CPU. I am querying a table with around 7000 records and my query is simply SELECT TOP 1000 * FROM MyTable. It takes over 10 seconds to return the recordset!

I have done the research and found posts, which talk about AUTO_CLOSE option, indexes, query execution plan, etc. I have done everything those posts recommend, but performance is still terrible. All the instances have SQL 2005 SP2 applied.

I also found that the query runs fast locally on each SQL Express instance, the problem seem to happen when I am trying to pull the data over the network.

I am really not sure what else to look for.

Thank you,

Michael

Simple Test Winforms App: Login Failed For User Sa - Sql Server Express

Jan 25, 2008

I've installed sql server 2005 on a customer's machine.

I have a very small "connection tester" app C# (2005) winforms app, which I use to verify connection strings. This app has been working for years. I am using the sa account to login with in this test app just to keep things simple. I am using Sql Server Authentication.

When I try to connect, I get a "login failed for user sa". I'm absolutely certain that I have the password correct.

Sql Server Express is setup in mixed mode, and I have all the tcp/ip settings correct ( as far as I know ).

I think if it was a tcp/ip thing, it wouldn't find the machine, as opposed to saying Login Failed.

I'm running out of things to look at.

The machine has .NET 3.5 installed. The connection test was written using C# 2005, .NET 2.x Could that cause a problem?

Old Asp Web App: Access To SQL Express

Jul 16, 2007

i have an older asp web application (not .net) which connects to an access database and reads tables. the .mdb file resides on the web server, along with the asp page. the access db is going away, and the tables have been re-created in SQL express. I need to figure out how to connect and read the tables from either the existing non dot.net asp application, or a new php application.

I have read the post

FAQ: How to connect to SQL Express from "downlevel clients"(Access 2003, VS 2003, VB 6, etc(basically anything that is not using .Net 2.0 or the new SQL Native Client))some more fundamental questions are:
1) can I upload the the SQL express MDF file to the IIS server, and connect to it as a stand-alone file (like i could with the access mdb file)? *** note: SQL express NOT installed on this server, just the standalone mdf file uploaded)
1)a) if yes, what additional code will i need? i am unsuccessful in using the following connection string
set conntemp=server.createobject("adodb.connection")
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=sonnys_inventory.mdf"
conntemp.Open connectionString

1)b) if no - i need to install SQL express on the IIS server. do i then upload the mdf file to the server and "attach" it through the SQL management program and follow directions in the post mentioned above?

thanks for any help.
