Simple 3 Table Query Failing.

Aug 25, 2005

I have a database with three tablestbl_listings - listings of houses on for saletbl_intersted - table which tracks if a user is interested in thelisting, it has two columns mls(the key for tbl_listings) and user(userlogin)tbl_review - table which trackes if a user has reviewed the listing.Like tbl_interested it has two columns (the key for tbl_listings) anduser(user login)How can I create a query on tbl_listings for reocords reviewed by oneuser?I am trying to create a query for listings that are revied by useruserid. I am using the query below. It works fine unless there is arecord in tbl_interested for a differnt user.In reality I am calling this query from the web. On the website I havean intersted dropdown with the choices All, interested, not interested. The website also has a reviewed dropdown with all, reviewed and notreviewed.I am using the query below as a starting point. my query works finewith one user, but if a user2 enters a record in tbl_intersted itthrows off the left join for user1. How can I fix this?SELECT COUNT(B.reviewed) AS review_count,Count(B.mls) as mls_count,A.mls,FROM mls.tbl_listings ALEFT OUTER JOIN mls.tbl_review B ON A.mls = B.mlsLEFT OUTER JOIN mls.tbl_interested D ON A.mls = D.mlswhere (B.reviewed = 'userid') and ((D.interested is null) or(D.interested = 'userid'))----My query works fine if there is one user, however once user2 reviews arecord from tbl_listing user1

SQL Database Backup Issue - Db Backup Job Failing

Nov 15, 2007

I am using sql server 2000 and windows server 2003 standard edition:
My database backup job is failing due to lack of disk space. I am taking the backup onto E drive and the
available free space on E drive is 6.85 GB and there are no other drives I can use for the database backups.
The size of mdf file is 21 GB and that of ldf file is 4.2 GB.
The transaction log back up job of that db ran fine.
This database recovery model is Full and
Auto shrink is not checked.
There is one primary filegroup for the database.
In this situation, I am thinking of the following option:
1. Backup the db and log files onto another network shared drive.
If I want to still use the same server E drive to backup the db and log files instead of using another network shared drives.
how can I do that.
Please let me know the best way of handling this issue.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

SQL Server 2008 :: Changed Database From Full To Simple - Maintenance Plan Failing

Mar 6, 2015

One of my programmers changed their database from full to Simple recovery. Saw that my job that backs up the Full Recovery mode databases failed, so I moved that database to my Simple database backup job plan and removed it from the Full Recovery job. I am unable to remove the db from the Transaction Log task on the Full Plan because when I try to edit that job "Databases with Simple Recovery will be excluded"

My transaction log backups are still failing with the following error: "The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE. BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.Just want to remove that database so my Full Recovery backup job does not try to back it up.

Backup Job Failing

Apr 25, 2007

I have an SSIS package that does one simple thing: perform a FULL backup of a database.

I executed this package yesterday at 2:00. The package backs up to four individual files on a network share. The network share is accessible from the SQL Server. THe database in question is 245GB in size.

The package was running fine when I left for the day. When I got in today, there was an error in the SQL Server log:

Error: 3041, Severity: 16, State: 1.

BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE ServicingODS. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.

Where is this infamous backup application log?!? The Event Viewer says the same thing. Needless to say, the error message is a bit vague.

There were no "issus" overnight (power outages, network issues, etc.)

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

I Am Getting A EM - DB Backup Job Failure - But The Job Is NOT Failing. Help?

Jul 25, 2001

Help! I am getting a Job failure for a DB Backup Job when I open up the
EM -> Management -> SQL Server Agt -> Jobs
When I check the SQL Logs, there is no Error message, nor is there an error message in the DB Maintenance Plan History. I checked the Server to make sure the DB was being backed up, and the current file is there. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks! (make me look good to the rest of my group!)

Failing Backup Jobs

Dec 14, 2005

I have a DB Maintenance plan created that performs optimizations, integrity checks, and a database backup. The optimizations and integrity checks work fine, but the backup job fails. The backup job is to write the .bak file to a network share.
When I change the owner of the job to "sqluser", the job fails at step 0 withe the following error:
The job failed. Unable to determine if the owner (rsnsqluser) of job DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'Online Database Server Maintenance Plan' has server access (reason: Could not obtain information about Windows NT group/user 'rsnsqluser'. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 8198)).
Checked with the system admin for this server and sqluser has priviledges to do everything, including write to the network share.

So, now I change the owner of the same maintenance job from sqluser to "sa". I now get this error:
Executed as user: RSNsqluser. sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed.

Checked the settings for MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT in Control Panel. Everything seems to be in order according to the other threads I have read.

For grins, I tried to ensure the sqluser password on the SQL Server Agent was correct. When I try to enter the new password I get this:
sql server agent startup account could not be verified
I click yes (it asks if I want to continue anyway).
Is the password not being registered properly in the agent?

One other thing, the sqluser user is listed under Security|Logins as connecting with Windows Authentication. We have several other servers that are set up the same and work fine. What am I missing? I'm pulling my hair out!

SQL 2005 Backup Failing [UNRESOLVED]

Feb 7, 2007

Environment: SQL 2005 Workgroup Ed. (part of SBS 2003 R2 Premium)

I have a database attached to SQL 2005 that is on my D: drive. I'm trying to run a full backup of this database to a backup device also on D:. The first time I ran the backup it worked fine, then I installed SQL 2005 SP1 and now it's failing. The error message is:

quote:
Backup failed for Server 'MYSERVER'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: Write on "My Backup Device(D:BackupMyBackupDevice.bak)" failed: 112(There is not enough space on the disk.)(Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

In the event viewer, the following events are logged in the Application log:

quote:
Source: MSSQLSERVER
Category: (6)
Event ID: 3041
Description:
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE MyDatabase. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.

quote:
Source: MSSQLSERVER
Category: (2)
Event ID: 18210
Description:
BackupMedium::ReportIoError: write failure on backup device 'D:BackupMyBackupDevice.bak'. Operating system error 112 (There is not enough space on the disk.).

If I do the backup to the MSSQL default backup directory (on C: ), the backup completes successfully. If I try to back up the master database (on C: ) to the backup directory I created on D:, the backup completes successfully. If I try to back up the master database to the MSSQL default backup directory (on C: ), the backup completes successfully.

The SqlServer and SqlAgent processes are both running under a domain user account, and that account has full control of my backup directory on D:. I should also mention that my D: drive has over 100GB free, and the database is only 330MB. It is a simple database model.

I've searched all day today trying to find the solution to this issue, and I can't find anything relevant. Could someone please help me!!! I'm about at my wit's end!

Thanks in advance,
Greg

Backup Failing, Plenty Of Disk Space

Jan 4, 2008

Good morning,

We get frequent (1 out of 3) "sqlmaint.exe failed" errors during backups for one of our larger databases (40GB). So i removed the maintenance plan and put in a custom backup job to get a better error msg in the log:

BackupMedium::ReportIoError: write failure on backup device 'F:MSSQLmydb_2008_1_3_21_45.BAK'. Operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.).

However, we have PLENTY of space on disk:
LOG DISK - NTFS - used space = 2GB, free space = 81GB
BACKUP DISK - NTFS - used space = 29GB, free space = 82GB
So even if it doubled in size, there would still be 50GB free.

Any ideas?
Thanks!!

Scripted Backup/Restore To Remote Server Failing

May 16, 2008

FYI: I've posted this on a couple of forums and haven't gotten any response. I hope someone here can help since this is way past due.

First I'll give a little background on our situation.

Log Shipping and Replication are out, so I am scripting a backup locally, an xcopy to a remote box, and then a restore.

In the early stages of this, I'm trying to do 3 databases. 2 of them work fine alone. It's when I add the 3rd one that I have a problem. I noticed that in the 2nd stored procedure that I probably need to take out the WITH REPLACE if I'm dropping it beforehand as well. I don't have time to test it on this box until later tonight. I don't think that's the issue because it was doing the same thing before I added the drop. I'm overwriting the .txt file so I don't have the exact error that it's giving. I believe it's something similar to "Server: Msg 11, Level 16, State 1, Line 0 General network error. Check your network documentation." I believe it also said [SQLSTATE 42000].

Now for the code. Props to Tara and the code she's put online.

Any help would be appreciated and I'll be glad to help answer questions related to what I've got.

1st Step:
Agent Job scheduled to call stored procedure

A Simple Backup Need Help!

Apr 3, 2006

My hosting company just "upgraded" to mylittleadmin for SQL, we can no longer connect and manage using enterprise manager or local other tools. I need the ability to connect locally, so I'm changing hosting company. The problem is I need an updated backup to transfer to the new server, even tech-support can't figure out this new "upgraded" system. The only help they offered was try the "dump" command, but that only give me a Incorrect syntax near '20' error. This is what I tried using the online Query Analyser:
dump dbname
dump 20twenty

Any and all help highly appreciated....
Thanks

Very Simple (n00b) - Db Backup?

Dec 8, 2005

Hey peeps, n00b here, in WAY over my head.

I have an MS SQL server running in the office, which is used for more than one application - the same server hosts databases for at least two totally seperate applications. One of these databases is called CApplication, and another iscalled CSystem, and these two together support an app called Client.

All I want to do is create CApplication2, which is an exact one-time copy of CApplication. I don't need it to update, or synchronise, or link to any other database, or anything. I want to write an interface for this DB, and I don't want to use the live one.

Do I "detach" then "copy" then "reattach" or something? If somebody could give me some rather lame step-by-step instructions I would really appreciate it - I can take this databasse offline, but I really should try to put it back online as soon as possible, and it is essential that nothing changes in between!

I'm a bit nervous about this, if I break this database I'm a dead man. Thanks guys!

Hot Backup In SIMPLE Mode

Jul 20, 2005

We have a SQL Server 7.0 database running with trunc. log on chkpt andselect into/bulkcopy checked and need to develop a backup strategy. One of our DBAs insists that since the transaction log is beingtruncated, we can't do a hot backup (a FULL backup in multiuser mode)because if a transaction comes through during the backup it will leavethe backup in an inconsistent state. I'm skeptical, but I don't knowhow SQL Server 7 avoids this problem. If SQL 7 is not truncating the transaction log, it uses thetransaction log to roll forward changes that occurred during thebackup. Obviously if it's truncating the log it must have some way toapply these transactions anyway (such as not doing a checkpoint duringthe backup, backing up the log at each checkpoint, etc.).Can anyone confirm that a hot backup will be valid when trunc. log onchkpt is checked? Does anyone know how SQL 7 accomplishes this? Thanks!James

Simple Database Backup?

May 23, 2007

I thought I would start learning how to backup my SQL Server 2005 database using the simple recovery method. Using the SQL Server Management Studio I started the backup task. In the Back Up Database dialog box the Recovery Model is set to Full and disabled (grayed out). It does not give me the option to switch to the Simple Recovery Model. Is there a setting I need to adjust that will allow me to switch to the Simple Recover Model?

Simple(?) Backup - Restore Question

May 21, 2004

Greetings,

Been lurking for a while, and new to MS-SQL, and didn't see an answer to a question that I have.

Running MS-SQL2000. SP2

Have a need to make a backup of a database at midnight on the last day of the month and to then make that data available to Accounting for end of month reporting.

The easy part was to schedule a full backup to occur at midnight on the last day of the month. The db was backed up to the file name Chorro_MonthEnd.BAK.

I then added to the scheduled job the following T-SQL:

RESTORE DATABASE [Chorro_MonthEnd] FROM DISK = N'D:Data FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLBACKUPChorro_MonthEnd.bak'

The question(s) that I have are:

1) The data in the db Chorro_MonthEnd should be over-written with the data from the restore?

2) Since the Chorro_MonthEnd db exists, is MOVE necessary as part of the restore command? I have been told that if you don't use the MOVE command, it puts the original file names back into wherever directory structure they were backed up from. The concern is that it could overwrite the original db MDF/LDF files.

What we are trying to avoid is having someone from the IS side of the house having to be on-site to restore a db for Accounting. IS type get cranky if they don't get enough sleep :D

Thanks in advance....

Backup Log WITH NO_LOG, Change Rec Mod. To SIMPLE?

Aug 21, 2007

Hi,

I use FULL recovery model, SQL 2005. Is it possible this type of
backup ""change"" my recovery model to SIMPLE. I noticed when I
executed this:

BACKUP DATABSE db_name
TO DISK = 'path'
BACKUP LOG db_name WITH NO_LOG
DBCC SHRINKFILE ('db_name_log', truncateonly)

Now transact log grow very, very, very slow (this is symptom simple
model). But when executed this (different order):

BACKUP LOG db_name WITH NO_LOG
DBCC SHRINKFILE ('db_name_log', truncateonly)
BACKUP DATABSE db_name
TO DISK = 'path'

transact log grow normally

Would somebody explain me this, and tell me first statement change
(theoretically) my model to SIMPLE?

Simple Recovery And Full Backup

Jun 10, 2006

Hi MVPS/MS Experts:

Pardon me and my ignorance for asking this question. I just want to understand the backup architecture more clearly. According to BOL (both in SQL 2k and SQL 2k5) in simple recovery mode trasaction log backup is not possible since the log is truncated on checkpoint which is true. Also we know that FULL backup backups both the db and transaction log as well.

My question is what happens when a database is in simple recovery mode and a full backup is done. since the tran log cannot be backed up does only the db backup is done when a full backup is done?. What exactly happens behind the scenarios?. Is it that only the active log gets backed up when a full backup is done in simple recovery mode?. I am trying to understand how a full backup in simple recovery mode behaves without contradicting the full backup architecture and that the veracity of the statement (both db and tran log backup in full backup mode) holds true for a simple recovery scenario.

MVPs/ MS Experts if you could Please explain it in detail, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Ankith

Db Backup Simple Vs. Full Recovery Mode

Feb 14, 2007

When we do a full database backup manually, we are seeing the trn file reflect the current date/time, but we are not seeing the mdf reflect the new date/time. And we are not seeing the transaction log file decrease in size. the recovery mode is set to full, do we need to change to simple to see both the mdf being backup'ed?

Backup Of Ldf File In Simple Recovery Model

Mar 20, 2008

Hello,

I have a question regarding the backup for the database in Simple Recovery Model.

In this Model, I know we can restore only to the last full backup or can use differential

Backup, if implemented as a part of backup.

But my point of confusion is about the backup of '.ldf' file, should those file should be backed up in the

Maintenance Plan, if yes does it help in reducing the size of Log file?

Do we need the backup of '.ldf' in phase of Restoring?

As I mention my database has Simple Recovery Model, but the size of log file is around 20GB,

Could not understand why as in this Model, normally it automatically truncate the Log file?

Help me to clear my these doubts,

thanks,

SQL Tools :: In Simple Recovery Mode Can Do Live Differential Backup?

Jun 30, 2015

I have a small, ~10GB SQL 2008 R2 database, that was setup with simple recovery.  We do full backup each night at midnight when no one is using the database.  Is there any problems with doing differential backups during the day when users may be writing to the database?  Could I even do hourly differential backups while users are using the database?  I'm conflicted about switching over to full recovery mode and using transaction logs to have the ability restore data between backups.  If I can do a couple daily differential backups while users are using the database during the day, in addition to our nightly full backups,  than I  live with simple recovery mode.

BACKUP LOG Cannot Be Performed Because There Is No Current Database Backup. BACKUP LOG Is Terminating Abnormally.

Jan 31, 2008

Hi there

I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.

The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).

Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?

Thanks

Jane

Simple Join Not So Simple

Feb 21, 2007

I am receiving funny results from a query. To simplify, I have 2 tables (todayyesterday). Each tbl has the same 8 columns. My query joins the two tables then looks where either of two columns has changed. What is happening is that when checking one of the columns it seems as though sql is flipping the column, causing it to be returned in error.

result set

colA colB colC colD colE colF colG colG (from yesterday)
1 1 a b c d e m
1 1 a b c d m e

So what's happening is that the record above is actually the same record and should not be returned. There is a daily pmt column that changes but I am not using that in the query. Aside from that the two records are identicle.

Any help is appreciated.

Simple Join Not So Simple

Aug 19, 2006

Hi,

I have the following situation (with a site that already works and i cannot modify the database architecture and following CrossRef tables -- you will see what i mean by CrossRef tables below)

I have:

Master table Hotel

table AddressCrossRef (with: RefID = Hotel.ID, RefType = 'Hotel', AddrID)
joins
table Address (key = AddrID)

table MediaCrossRef (with RefID = Hotel.ID, RefType= 'Hotel', MediaID)
joins
table Media (with MediaID,mediaType = 'thumbnail')

foreach hotel, there definitely is a crossRef entry in AddressCrossRef and Address tables respectively (since every hotel has an address)

however not all hotels have thumbnail image

hence i have hotel inner join AddressXReff inner join Address ..... however i must have
left outer join mediaXref left outer join media

the problem is that if there is no entry in Media or mediaXref, I don't get any results

i tried to get over it by using
where (media.mediaTyple like 'thumbnail' or media.mediaType is null)
but then i started getting multiple results for each hotel because media's of type movie or full_image or etc... all got returned

any clue?

thanks

Bcp Failing

Jan 4, 2001

i ran it from the command prompt. I used my nt account which belongs to the domain admin nt group. my account does have sql access as sa.

also on one of the servers all jobs are failing with the following message - Unable to Connect to Sql Server (local). The nt log records the error that the specific user sqlexec (this is the account on which sql executive runs) is not defined as a valid user of a trusted sql server connection. I am not able to change the security setting on this server using EM nor am i able to use the sql security manager. I get an access denied error. What is the workaround for this problem? Will stopping and restarting the sql service help?
------------

How did you run bcp? In dos prompt or as sql job? Which nt account did you run bcp under? Did you grant sql access for that nt account?

yes i did. it still gives me the same error - 18452 error not associated with a trusted connection
-----------------

Did you enable mixed login mode on the server?

hello ray

It still does not work. I granted SA rights for the nt group via sql security manager. For one of the servers i get the following error message -
This sql server does not support Windows NT SQL Server Security stored procedures.

Use security manager to grant access for nt account.

i am attempting to bcp using the -T (trusted connection) option in sql 6.5. the login security mode is set to integrated. the bcp is however failing with msg 18452 error not associated with a trusted connection. why is this happening? i do not want to hardcode the sa password in the bcp command.

thanks
