Simple Migration From MySQL To SQL Server Express 2005?
Mar 18, 2006
Normally I'd go and write a bunch of code for doing it manually... But instead of that, maybe there is a smarter way?
What I know is that you can get some kind of dump out of MySQL but I would be very surprised if that could be directly read into SQL Express ??
So if you have a few step guide to migrate from MySQL to SQL Express, I am all ears (and eyes)!
Thanks!
(Yes I am aware there is some DTS thingy for this but could not find it in the Express folders)

The Environment:
I have an old Windows 2000 BackOffice server (Retail but with no media) that hosts a small database (<50mb) that is hosted on the local SQL Server 2000 installation. The network has 8 PCs that connect to the database via ODBC connections. I just purchased a new server running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (OEM).
What I€™m Trying to Accomplish:
I want to decommission the old 2000 BackOffice server and move the database to the new 2003 Standard server. I€™m trying to do this on the cheap, so I really want to avoid spending thousands on a new SQL server license.
Things I€™m Considering:
1) Migrating the database from SQL 2000 Standard to SQL 2005 Express
2) Moving the database from SQL 2000 Standard to MS Access
3) Purchasing SQL Server 2005 licenses and upgrading
4) Purchasing SQL 2000 Server licenses
The options are pretty much listed in my order of preference. I€™d like to move from SQL 2000 Server to SQL 2005 Express, but I haven€™t really found a lot of material on the subject since people customarily go the other way.
Any advice or alternative recommendations would be much appreciated!

Hi,
In MySQL,
"GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'root'@'192.168.1.1' IDENTIFIED BY 'mypassword' WITH GRANT OPTION;"
This gives the permission to 'root' user from '192.168.1.1'. Another user or another ip couldn't connect to this server.
In SQL Server 2005 Express, can I implement like above query statement?

I am trying to migrate from MySQL 4.1 to MS SQL Express 2005
1. do i need to create an empty db under Express
2. can this be done from within Express by pulling from MySQL into Express or do I need to work from command lines
3. what would be the cleanest way to approach this
I have a MySQL dump and did look at the result from within Express, but it was not an import, I would like to find a way to import if possible that data. Table by table would be fine.

I'm trying to upsize an Access database to SQL 2005 Express. When I follow the wizard and I've tried all ways of connecting to the database I get the following error
Connection failed
SQL State '01000'
SQL Server Error 53
[Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB] ConnectionOpen()).
Connection failed
SQL State '08001'
SQL Server Error 17
[Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB] SQL Server does not exist or access denied
I've tried using local host and typing the exact server connection string from the SQL Express Management tool and nothing is working
How come I can't do this? Everyone says this is easy and straight forward -- not for me.

Hi all,
I want to do SQLCLR by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express and I have read the following articles and books:
(i) Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio in http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2006/11/22/connecting-to-sql-express-user-insta...
(ii) Managing SQL Server Express with SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express Edition in http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sql/2005/mgsqlexpwssmse.mspx
(iii) Chapter 16 - Going Beyand Transact-SQL: Using the SQL Common Language Rutime (SQLCLR) in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for Dummies
(iv) Chapter 21 - Working with the Common Language Runtime in Microsft SQL Server 2005 Programming for Dummies
(v) Chapter 4 - Introduction to Common Language Runtime (CLR) Integration in Programming SQL Server 2005 by Bill Hamilton.
I want to create an SQLCLR project "HelloWorld" by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. But I am still not sure how to get it started, because I do not understand the following things:
(1) Pipe Name for a User Instance, (2) Enabling (or Disabling) the CLR by using Transact-SQL, (3) Creating a Transact-SQL script, (4) Creating an Assembly, (5) Creating a backup device, etc. I need to see some simple examples of SQLCLR by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. Please help and tell me where in the websites I can find them.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

I've downloaded the migration tool to convert an Access 2000 DB to a SQL DB. The VB code utilizes DAO (3.6) for hourly automatic compaction and the creation of an encrypted security database. ADO is used for the data maintenance functions. I expect the current connection methodology of ODBC using Jet 4.0 will need to be modified (many articles here address this). All the SQL code is inline and also must be modified. The Coldfusion code utilizes Micrsoft Access with Unicode via an ODBC connection with only SQL Select statements. At another job, I migrated an Informix 7 database to MS SQL 7 and for the most part the SQL code remained the same except for the wildcard spec from * to %.
I'm looking for insights and/or shortcuts on this effort, primarily in the SQL command mods area. I'm perusing the threads here as we speak, but hoped someone knew of a specific thread I could go to....laziness is alive and well for us chronologically gifted people, i.e. over 55.
Any help or links are greatly appreciated!

Hi ,
I have a requirement to migrate the data from an existing MS Access database to a newly designed SQL Express 2005 database . Need less to say the table structures in both are totally different.I would like to know how can i handle a scenerio where i want to map table A in access to table B in SQL express (the schema of both different and the number of columns can vary too) , how do i migrate the data from table A in Access to Table B in SQL express using SSMA?
Also i would appreciate if some one can tell me is SSMA the right tool for this , or should i use the upsizing wizard of MS Access. The constraint here is that the data needs to be migrated to a completely new schema. I just need to migrate data only and no other objects.
Thanks

Hi everybody!
I have made a simple application with VB6 and SQL 2005 Express.
And after testing it in a network simulated with Virtual-Machine Workstation, the "real world" application was first getting slower and slower, and finally giving timeout errors.
It is even difficult to connect. The application times out always at 30 secs although the ado connection timeout was established longer (45)
I have checked on the machine where the server is installed, just in case the slow down was due to network problems, but it fail locally too.
Any help is wellcome

I want to refer in a table quotes to customers and itemes from another table.
here is my table list in database:
"Customers"
"PriceList"
I want to create another table which through it I can create qoutes for customers suing a collection of items in PriceList table.
for example I want to be able to create something like this:
Title:
my quote example
QuoteID:
46543
Items (retrieved from PriceList table):
370
474
456
belongsTo (a relation to CustomerID in Cstomers table):
6234876
Discount, Date, WrittenBy, etc.
how many tables do I have to use for it, and what queries I have to write, and do I have to create any special relationships?

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
Thank you,
Bashman

I've been asked to migrate a db in MySQL to SQL Server 2005. Since I'm only familiar with sql server 2000 and before, I dont' know where to begin looking for the information I need.
Can someone point me to what I would search for in SQL Server 05 for this (is there any new features here I should be aware of that might make this easier?)
If anyone has done this, what are the gotcha's or things I should be aware of.
Thanks for any input

Good Morning
Has anyone successfully used cherry's oledb provider for MYSQL to create a linked server from MS SQLserver 2005 to a Linux red hat platform running MYSQL.
I can not get it to work.
I've created a UDL which tests fine. it looks like this
[oledb]
; Everything after this line is an OLE DB initstring
Provider=OleMySql.MySqlSource.1;Persist Security Info=False;User ID=testuser;
Data Source=databridge;Location="";Mode=Read;Trace="""""""""""""""""""""""""""""";
Initial Catalog=riverford_rhdx_20060822
Can any on help me convert this to corrrect syntax for sql stored procedure
sp_addlinkedserver
I've tried this below but it does not work I just get an error saying it can not create an instance of OleMySql.MySqlSource.
I used SQL server management studio to create the linked server then just scripted this out below.
I seem to be missing the user ID, but don't know where to put it in.
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'DATABRIDGE_OLEDB', @srvproduct=N'mysql', @provider=N'OleMySql.MySqlSource', @datasrc=N'databridge', @catalog=N'riverford_rhdx_20060822'
