Slow Performance With Management Studio Open
Jun 20, 2007
Hi everyone!
I'm currently working on my first project which is using SQL express. The performance of the queries is really quick with management studio closed. But when I have it open to test queries, my program seems to take longer to connect to the server. Is there something I haven't set up right or is this to be expected when using the express edition?
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance.

I've got a new machine at work here running Vista 64 bit....when I use SQL Management Studio to connect to a server it "Stops Responding" for a period of time and eventually comes back to life. When I check the server registration properties and click "Test Connection" it takes 13 seconds to succeed. Anyone else have this...it's God awful slow. Other devs on XP don't have this problem. What gives?

Hi,
I've recently installed SQL Server 2005 Express on my PC (winXP).
I'm finding that SQL Server Management Studio Express runs very slow. Every simple task takes 10-60seconds (open table, creating a table, saving anything etc). I can't find an answer to this anywhere. I've read neumerous articles that people wern't online therefore it was running slow because a certificate was trying to verify in the background... but I'm online and I've disabled the certificate so it can't be that.
This is a fresh install so I can't understand why it runs so slowly! When I used to use enterprise manager with SQL Server 2000 it worked at lighting speed.
What's going on?

Dear Gurus
When I open a large table (say more than 1,000,000 Rows) in the SSMS by right clicking on the table name, it takes a very big time to fully open the table.More than 20 minutes for 1,000,000 records on a local instance.
SQL Server 2000 EM was extremely faster. Does any one knows a work around?
I need to be able to view and edit the data in SSMS.
Thanks in advance.

I have a parent package which executes 14 child packages in parallel, which on average take ~10 seconds each to complete when I execute the parent packege using BIDS or DTEXEC.
However, if I run the parent package using SQL Management Studio (Integration Services > Stored Packages > MSDB > Right Click > Run Package) each package takes in excess of 10 minutes to run, getting progressively slower as each package starts.
Surely the package is executing in exactly the same way as BIDS/DTEXEC, just a differenct UI?
Can anyone explain why this happens?
Thanks in advance,
Leigh

Hi there
I have a VS2008 project with a CE3.5 database. I am unable to open this database within SQL 2005 Management Studio only VS2008. Any way of updating the CE engine for Management Studio?
"You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition database (this is lying I know the db is 3.5+)"
[Db version 3505053, Requested version=3004180]

I can't seem to open my SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP anymore. I need help figuring this out. I was able to open it before.
I went to the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and tried to "repair" the program but nothing changes. Anytime I double-click on ssmsee.exe, the hour-glass flashes, but the program never starts. Any ideas why?
The last thing I loaded was the AdventureWorksBI.msi. I already downloaded and installed AdventureWorksDB.msi.
I have Windows 2000 Pro, I have SQL Server 2005 Express loaded, among other 2005 Express programs. No other problems.
Any clues?
I am sure that whatever the correct is to newbievsprogrammer's post at http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=295166&SiteID=1 will also relate to mine as I can't seem to connect to any database either.

Hello all.
I have uploaded a table into sql management studio express. However, when I right click on the table and try and open it, I get an error message saying;
"SQL Execution Error.
Executed SQL statement: select columnName1, columnName2 etc....
Error source: Microsoft. VisualStudio.DataTools
Error Message: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation"
Because of this error, I cannot manually edit the table. However, when I write a query running select * from Table X, the table does appear that way.
Any help regarding how to open the table would be very much appreciated!!

I had SQl Express version installed previously and everything worked. I could connect to one server running SQL Express and a different server running full up SQL 2005 enterprise version.
I uninstalled All SQL express programs and installed tools from SQL 2005 developer.
I have rebooted, started the program directly (not using a link of any kind) and all attempts fail. After dismissing the error msg the tool opens and I can run queries agains the DB but the database engines and related tables do not show.
My work station is Windows XP with SP2 installed.
I have googled the problem extensively and tried solutions found but none have solved the problem.
Any help greatly appreciated.

It works fine and I see the system tables and can make my own tables.
But how do I open a standalone MDF file with it? Or maybe it is a restriction ?
I am trying to get to the database for my personal start kit.

Bit of a strange one here. We have a SQL Express instance running with one database which is accessed by a VB6 client application.
Performance between the application and the database isn't great, but bizarrely if you open a Query window from the Management Studio (against the database) the performance dramatically improves - to the extent that it is visually noticeable from within the application.
So, I'm thinking that the database connections being made by the application are taking longer because of instance name resolution or the like and with the Query window open this resolution is performed quicker.
Has anyone come across this situation? I can re-create it on several different computers each with their own Express instance and I've not found anything about this on the net.
Here's the connection string used by the application - I have tried various permutations of values to no avail:
Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Initial Catalog=SampleDB;Data Source=(local)sqlexpress;Trusted_Connection=yes
Thanks very much

Hello,
I'm new to SQL server 2005. I installed SQL server 2005 and had some problems with the original install. I therefore uninstalled SQL server 2005. Rebooted and than installed SQL server 2005 again. Everything appears to have installed correctly except for the fact that when I start SQL Server Management Suite I get 2 copies running in the foreground. The last copy of the SQL Server Management Suite shows a dialogue box that contain a warning sign (yellow triangle) with no text but an OK button is in the dialogue box. When I press the OK button, this instance of SQL Server Management Suite kills itself. The first instance is now given window focus and it brings up the "Connect to Server" dialogue box. I can connect to my local server and run a script to add columns to the database. But everytime I bring up SQL Server Management Suite, I always end up with 2 copies running and I have to hit the OK button to get rid of the second copy. Can anyone help me get ride of this annoying problem?

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.
I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?
I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?
I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.
How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.
Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.
My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.
Thanks

Hello, I started profiling a website that i'm developing yesterday (asp.net 2.0) and noticed that sqlconnection.open is ridiculously slow (between 3-10 seconds) when using integrated security=true in the connection string. If I use SQL authentication instead and pass the username and password in the connection string, sqlconnection.open is instantaneous.
My enviornment is as follows:
Sql server is on a win2003 x64 server.

Help! I am new to SQL (6.5) and am designing a small database on a small LAN.
Everything seems to work fine until more than one user gets in the database.
It was originally an Access database and we upsized some of the information to SQL.
I have not upsized all the tables yet, and am not sure if that is causing a problem.
Since we are new to SQL we are trying to make all the changes in Access then upsize
everything. If this is the problem though, I will not be hesitant in upsizing.
Any ideas?

Since sp2 a number of applications, specifically web ado access has slowed very badly and I seem to be seeing a high cpu usage too. Internal jobs such as backups and table defrags are not affected. I'm on a 4 way box with ample hardware .. stats indexes etc. are fine .. client access is just slow. I suspect mdac but I can't pin anything down and it's driving me crazy !!!!!
I've even built a new box with a fresh install but to no avail.

I'm running the following statements. They have been running for 48 hours and counting... In performance monitor, I can see the system is steadily 100% disc bound. Any idea how to get status or ETA on these? Any idea how I can speed up such actions? This seems unusually slow. There are no errors in the Error Log. Does other DBMS systems (such as Oracle) handle such scenarios more quickly or with better status information?
INSERT INTO Domains (Domain)
SELECT DISTINCT Domain FROM Stages WHERE Domain NOT IN (SELECT Domain FROM Domains)
UPDATE Stages SET DomainID = (SELECT Domains.[ID] FROM Domains WHERE Domains.Domain = Stages.Domain)
Stages is 173 million records

Windows 2000 SP5
SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition SP3a
Dual 3.06 GHz Xeons with HyperThreading enabled (4 virtual CPUs)
4GB RAM (OS 3GB switch is enabled to give SQL Server 3GB of RAM)
70GB SCSI boot drive
