Slow Running Insert After Changing OLE DB Destination Data Access Mode

Jan 4, 2007

Hello,

In a Data Flow Task, I have an insert that occurs into a SQL Server 2000 table from a fixed width flat file. The SQL Server table that the data goes into is accessed through an OLE DB connection manager that uses the Native OLE DBMicrosoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server.

In the OLE DB Destination, I changed the access mode from Table or View - fast load to Table or View because I needed to implement OLE DB Destination Error Output. The Error output goes to a SQL Server 2000 table that uses the same connection manager.

The OLE DB Destination Editor Error Output 'Error' option is configured to 'Redirect' the row. 'Set this value to selected cells' is set to 'Fail component'.

Was changing the access mode the simple reason why the insert from the flat file takes so much longer, or could there be other problems?

Thank you for your help!

Raw File Destination Access Mode Filename From Variable Problem

Dec 31, 2006

I have a raw file destination and am using a variable to store the filename. In an earlier task, I create the value in the variable. User:Filename ... set to C:Test.txt.

When I run the package, I get the "Error: 0xC0202070 at DFT Tekelec Call Events, RFD Tekelec [1365]: The file name property is not valid. The file name is a device or contains invalid characters". error. I then set a breakpoint to examine my variables on the DataFlow pre-execute event and found my variable showing the value "C:\Text.txt" ... so apparently XMLA is adding the escape character when it stores the value in the variable but not retracting it when it uses the value as the filename.

What am I missing? Can I not use pathing in the variable? And if that's the case, how do I specify a path. Went back through my Rational Guide to Scripting SSIS but did not find this addressed specifically ... my second option being build the fiilename by script and set the raw file destination property directly via script.

Slow Running Insert Statement

Apr 6, 2007

I support a website (ASP.NET 2.0) where recently users have been unable to insert data due to timeout issues. The functionality executes a query that inserts a single row into a SQL Server 2005 db table. I tried running this query from the backend, and it took 4:48 to insert a single row! Interestingly, after that initial agony any similar inserts I tried took no time whatsoever. I have checked the execution plan, but unfortunately don't really know what I'm looking for with inserts, as most of my experience with execution plans is with select statements. Any resources anyone could point me to for troubleshooting this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

HOWTO Insert Into ACCESS Linked Table Via OLE DB Destination Task

Jun 22, 2007

I have used an access linked table to import data from a sharePoint list hosted on SharePoint 2007 server.

I hope someone else has done this. (1)I Does anyone know of any other way to pull data from a SharePoint 2007 list.

(2)Has anyone pushed data to a SharePoint List from a SQL Server table?

I tried doing that via the linked table but the destination task of the data flow task does not allow me to push data into the table.

(3) Has anyone designed an SSIS package to write data to an AccESS table from a SQL Server table?

Any help would be appreciated

Data Flow Task Running Very Slow

Jun 11, 2007

Hello,

I developed an SSIS package doing a nightly load into a data warehouse. We have an 8 hour loading window - currently the package takes 16 hours to complete.

I isolated the problem to a Data Flow task where +-35% of the time is spent. This task is pretty straight forward:

- OLE DB source, reading +- 800,000 rows from a SQL server database

- 13 Lookups in sequence, to get surrogate keys from dimension tables. Lookups are all on GUIDS.

- An aggregation

- OLEDB target, fact table in a SQL server database.

It seems unreasonable for the this task to take over 5 hours. It spends the majority of time on the lookups - not so much at target, source and aggregation.

Any comments and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Slow Running Query With A High Lob Logical Reads, Lob Data

Jun 1, 2007

we had some slow down complaints lately and this query seems to be the culprit almost every single time. The estimated execution plan is a clustered index seek as there is a clustered index on the uidcustomerid column. setting profile statistics on shows that every time it executes it does an index seek.

profiler session showed a huge number of reads for these queries depending on the value being looked up. 1500 through 50000. i set up profile io on and the culprit is lob logical reads. everything else is 0 or very low. in this case lob logical reads is over 1700.

3 of the columns in the select statement are text columns. when i take them out of the query the lob logical reads drops to 0 and goes up incrementally as i add each column back in.

is there anyway to improve the performance without changing data types to varchar(max)?

OLE DB Source - Data Access Mode - SQL Command

Feb 14, 2006

I got a package with data flow task. Within the data flow task I have flat file with Fiscal Calendar defined. I got another data source within the data flow task, which is OLE DB Source. I want to use SQL Command as data access mode. SQL similar to one the below is in there.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DECLARE @startdate DATETIME
DECLARE @enddate DATETIME
DECLARE @date DATETIME
DECLARE @id INT

SET @startdate = '1993-09-26' --Change these to
SET @enddate = '2010-09-25' --whatever you want
SET @id = 1
SET @date = DATEADD(dd, @id, @startdate)

WHILE @date <= @enddate
BEGIN
select @date CalendarDate,
DATEPART(dd, @date) CalendarDayMonth,
DATEPART(dy, @date) CalendarDayYear,
DATEPART(dw, @date) CalendarDayWeek,
DATENAME(dw, @date) CalendarDayName

SET @id = @id + 1
SET @date = DATEADD(dd, @id, @startdate)

END

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This SQL works fine in SSMS and returns around 6000 rows. But when I plug the same SQL in OLE DB Source it returns only the first record. It is not going through the WHILE loop.

Has anyone came across this?

Thanks

Copying Table Data From SQL Server 2005 To SQL Server 2000 - Very Slow When Using OLEDB Source And Destination Sources?

May 8, 2006

An SSIS package to transfer data from a DB instance on SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2000 is extremely slow. The package uses an OLEDB Source to OLEDB Destination for data transfer which is basically one table from sql server 2005 to sql server 2000. The job takes 5 minutes to transfer about 400 rows at night when there is very little activity on the server. During the day the job almost always times out.

On SQL Server 200 instances the job ran in minutes in the old 2000 package.

Is there an alternative to this. Tranfer Objects task does not work as there is apparently a defect according to Microsoft. Please let me know if there is any other option other than using a Execute 2000 package task or using an ActiveX Script to read records from one source and to insert them into the destination source, which I am not certain how long it might take and how viable will that be?

Any inputs will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

MShah

Data Access Very Slow In .net As Compared To VB

Jan 9, 2006

Hi,

I have migrated my app from VB to VB.Net. A 3-tier app with remoting and COM+.

I am experiencing a long wait time of about 3 times higher than what it would take in the VB App.

I am using DataAdapter.FiLL method to fill the datatable.

I have tried.

Using DataReader ( Made the things worse )

Using BeginLoadData and EndLoadData

Creating a Dataset and calling fill with the dataset so that the round trip to the middletier is saved to bring the SQL.

But i feel now that whatever is done. the problem is with the fill method only?

Is there any alternative?

Please suggest. It is one of the most important thing which if not possible may lead to scrapping up idea of upgrading to .Net.

so nothing has changed there. Hardware specification of our server is far more better then the recommended
system requirement for SQL Server 2005.Am i missing something out or i havent set up the SQL Server properly? Any help would really be appreciated.Mits

Can I Access My Data Source In Custom Report Item During Design Mode?

Mar 19, 2007

Hi,

I'm developing a Custom Report Item and would like to fill my properties dialog in design mode with real data. I have the name of the data source and the command text for the corresponding report dataset, read from the report design.

Is it possible to create an ado.net dataset so that I can display and use real data in my properties dialog box? First problem I have is to get the connection string from the data source string. I found no docs for that, especially the Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataExtensions.ReportDataSource class is not documented. Am I on the right way with that?

How Do I Call A Insert Stored Procedure From A Data Flow Destination Object?

Jun 26, 2007

I want to insert data calling a stored procedure and call this from a Data Flow destination object. Is it possible?

I understand that Ole Db Command transformation object can call stored procedure, but that will not rollback in the event of error in the middle.

I understand that Ole Db Destination object will rollback in middle of import, but I don't see how to do the insert by calling stored procedure. "Sql Command" option in Ole Db Destination object does not seem to present solution to the problem.

Am I missing something here or is Ssis / Microsoft demanding that Insert stored procedure not be used when using Data Flow destination object to insert data into target table?

Slow OLE DB Destination With SCD

Nov 27, 2006

Hi there,

I am using the SCD task, and noticed that the OLE DB Destination it generates does a "SELECT * FROM" from the destination table when i run my package (found this in trace). Now if this happens on a 20 000000 row destination table with computed fields on it, a lot of resources are wasted. Is there a way around this behaviour i.e. no select is done for the insert destination?

Data Access :: Insert Rows To MS Access 2013 Without Listing Column Names

Nov 12, 2015

We need to insert data/rows from a SQL Server 2014 database into MS Access database.  The problem is, there are so many columns (100+) in the table and there are so many insert transactions of this kind (from different tables) that it is not very easy to write the code in VB.NET that lists all column names.

Both the Access and SQL Server tables have the same number of columns and the equivalent data types, so inserting is not really the problem.  It's just that is there a way to do an insert statement in T-SQL that does not name all the columns?

Changing Autocommit Mode

May 9, 2006

Hi:

The first stmts in

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/acdata/ac_8_md_06_35bq.asp are

"Autocommit mode is the default transaction management mode of Microsoft® SQL Server„¢. Every Transact-SQL statement is committed or rolled back when it completes."

"if a statement completes successfully, it is committed; if it encounters any error, it is rolled back. A SQL Server connection operates in autocommit mode whenever this default mode has not been overridden by either explicit or implicit transactions."

My question is, how do we change autocommit mode. I don't want the dml to be commited until i explicitly do commit. This should be default setting.

I want this change either to be made at database level, maybe by doing some setting or through some T-SQL stmt.

I DO NOT want to use anything that has to be done in query windows like set ... off | on in each and every query window i use.

The change has to be done only once and should persist through-out.

Any solution will be of help to me.

Thanking you,

Regards,

kumar

GetErrorDescription With Oledb Destination Fast Load Mode

Feb 11, 2007

I have an OLE-DB Command transformation that inserts a row. If the insert SQL command fails for some reason, I use the "Redirect Row" option to send the row to a script component. Inthere, I get the error description into a string variable in order to log the error into an error table.

For example, if a primary key violation arises, I would like the error description to be "The data value violates integrity constraints". I get it using the ComponentMetadata.GetErrorDescription. When I use the "table or view mode", I get the error description above without any problem. But If I use the "table or view fast load", the description is something like "No status available". But, If I use the error output to fail the component, in the OnError, I get the right error description. Is there a way to have both behaviour, I mean, to be able to redirect error rows to an output and have the cotrrect error description (like the one in OnError event handler) using fast load mode?

Thank you!

Changing To Simple Recovery Mode

Jun 26, 2002

Hi,

What is the impact of changing the recovery mode of a database from Full to simple? The client I am at has set their database to full recovery mode, set their log files to grow automatically. But I don't think they have ever done a backup of their transaction log (it has grown to over 19Gig, where the data portion of the database is only around 400M).

What is the impact of truncating the transaction log now? After truncating it, i would like to shrink the file to a managable number and change the recovery mode to simple (they don't need transaction log backups)

Any info on this would be appreciated.

SQL 2012 :: Changing Compatibility Mode From 90 To 110

Jul 20, 2015

I have a 2005 database sitting on a 2012 server, we're looking to change its compatibility mode from 90 to 110 so we can avail of what 2012 offers.I did a migration project a couple years ago for SQL Server 2000 databases changing to 2008 R2 and we ran into loads of problems where we left most databases in compatibility mode 80 as these were application databases that the owners couldn't stand over in terms of deprecated code / features no longer in use in 2008 R2.

From what I can see with changing from 90 to 110, there doesn't seem to be as many issues but I just want to double check if there's a way to confirm this. I know upgrade advisor is a handy tool but will it pick up database specific issues as opposed to database server compatibility issues? URLs...I know UA won't cover all the bases but it would look good when attached to the report I'm submitting recommending the change.

Having Trouble Changing Destination Table Name

Mar 17, 2008

I created a package using the Import Data wizard and everything works fine when I re-execute it. I needed to change the name of the destination table so I went into SQL Server and renamed the table. I then went in and edited the DTSX file via a text editor and changed the OpenRowset setting from [CMBS].[dbo].[raw_Note] -> [CMBS].[dbo].[T_Raw_Note]

<property id="104" name="OpenRowset" dataType="System.String" state="default" isArray="false" description="Specifies the name of the database object used to open a rowset." typeConverter="" UITypeEditor="" containsID="false" expressionType="None">[CMBS].[dbo].[T_Raw_Note]</property>

There are no other references to the table in the DTSX, i saved the file and then re-ran.

When I run, I get invalid object name dbo.raw_Note (old table name). Is there some data being cached somewhere or hidden elsewhere that it would reference the old table? When I go back into the DTSX file, the correct name is in there so I don't know where it is getting the old name from? Any help would be appreciated.

How? Changing A Schema Behind A Dataflow Destination

Mar 16, 2007

I allowed the SQL Destination Editor to design my table from Output of
a flat text file. Everything was varchar(50), but that was cool,
because I got to see the data in the new staging tables it created. I
went back and tweaked the data types and sizes for various columns to
be more appropriate through the table designer in SQL Server Management
Studio.

After doing so I get an error trying to edit the package, specifically
parts of the destination in the data flow. I get the error "An error
occurred due to no connection. A connection is required when requesting
metadata... blah blah". I pick the TEST CONNECTION in the Connection
Manager, and it works fine.

I am sure this is probably a basic issue of mechanics of use that I
don't yet know because I am completely new to SSIS. Can someone please
provide a hint, perhaps what I did wrong, and also, if you can see it
how to redeem the error. Thanks!
