Slow SQL Server Data Transfers When Internet Connected

Mar 18, 2008

We have an information retrieval application in which there is a single connection to a database followed by multiple table open, read, and close commands. Response time is consistantly less than 1 second on a LAN.
When Internet connected (not VPN), the first table read is typically fast, but the response time becomes slower and slower after multiple table open, read, and close commands. There seems to be a considerable amount of handshaking based on monitoring of the router's status lights.

SQL Query Question : How To Add Data To Two Tables Connected By Third Junction-table.

May 1, 2008

Hello specialists.

Maybe this is the wrong formum but I've got a question for which you probably have the answer, i hope.

Situation
------------
John is member of Group_A and Group_B
Bill is member of Group_B and Group_C
Allison is member of Group_A and Group_E

How can I create a query to input Allisons username into table 1 and groupmembership into table 2. Also updating the relationship within junction-table3 must be done automaticaly. I want to avoid duplicate records.
The final situation I want is given in red text.

The relationships between the tables are as follows
-------------------------------------------------------------
Table1 (PK)ID-Userinfo [ONE] <------------> [MANY] Table3 ID-Userinfo
Table3 (PK)ID-GroupInfo [MANY] <------------> [ONE] Table2 (PK)ID-GroupInfo

Table1: UserInfo
------------------------------
(PK)ID-Userinfo UserName
1 John
2 Bill
3 Allison

Table2: GroupInfo
------------------------------
(PK)ID-GroupInfo GroupName
1 Group_A
2 Group_B
3 Group_C

4 Group_E

Table3: MemberOf
------------------------------
(PK)ID-MemberOf ID-UserInfo ID-GroupInfo
1 1 1
2 1 2
3 2 2
4 2 3
5 3 1
6 3 4

I hope you can help me cracking this nut.

Thx in advance. Greetings Fred

Very Slow Data Access On SQL Server 2005?

Jul 5, 2006

Hi

Here is the brief to my problemWe had our database on SQL Server 2000 and Windows 2000.This machine
had 2gb of RAM and dual Penitum 3 processors and about 25-30 users were
connected all the time. The size of database is around 2 gb. Even on this setup
rate of data retrival was good, never had any issues. We moved to SQL Server 2005 and Windows 2003. This machines has
2 Pentium Xeon 3.4 processors and 2 stick of KINGSTON 1024 MB 333
MHZ DDR DIMM ECC CL2.5 DUAL RANK X4 INTEL. The rate of data
retrival is awful and its very slow. It using about 1.7 to 1.9 gb of RAM all the
time. Page File usage is about 2.07 gb and Virtual Usage is about 1.7gb.I dont quiet understand why is it so slow to get data. We use bespoke software,
so nothing has changed there. Hardware specification of our server is far more better then the recommended
system requirement for SQL Server 2005.Am i missing something out or i havent set up the SQL Server properly? Any help would really be appreciated.Mits

Copying Table Data From SQL Server 2005 To SQL Server 2000 - Very Slow When Using OLEDB Source And Destination Sources?

May 8, 2006

An SSIS package to transfer data from a DB instance on SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2000 is extremely slow. The package uses an OLEDB Source to OLEDB Destination for data transfer which is basically one table from sql server 2005 to sql server 2000. The job takes 5 minutes to transfer about 400 rows at night when there is very little activity on the server. During the day the job almost always times out.

On SQL Server 200 instances the job ran in minutes in the old 2000 package.

Is there an alternative to this. Tranfer Objects task does not work as there is apparently a defect according to Microsoft. Please let me know if there is any other option other than using a Execute 2000 package task or using an ActiveX Script to read records from one source and to insert them into the destination source, which I am not certain how long it might take and how viable will that be?

Any inputs will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

MShah

Import Data From SQL Server 2000 Incredibly Slow

Sep 6, 2006

I have a problem with bad perfomance with my import of data from a SQL Server 2000 database. I use an OLEDB datasource in my SSIS package to connect to the sql server 2000 database. My 2005 server runs 64bits but i dont think this is an issue. With this configuration the import is VERY slow, we are talking about 40+ minutes to get 3.5 million rows with about 20 columns. When i create a test DTS package on the SQL Server 2000 server itself and run it, its blazingly fast. Has anyone run into something similar?

Run A Large SQL Stored Procedure In The Background While ASP.NET Transfers Back To Browser?

May 24, 2007

Apologies if this post doesn't belong here.
We are in the process of moving steps from a large SQL job to a web portal. The intent here is to allow the user to manually trigger the jobs to run. The problem I am having is in determining a way to run these job steps in the background, thus allowing the browser to take control while the step runs. These jobs can take enough time that forcing the browser to wait is not an option. The steps have been consolidated into stored procedures so in order to run a step, one would call the sproc. What I would like to do is run this in a separate thread and let that thread end on its own while the server transfers back to the client. Is something like this possible? My understanding is that the thread would be orphaned once the browser takes control again. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cannot Get Connected To My SQL Server

Mar 23, 1999

When I try to connect to my SQL server I get the following error.

Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager
A connection could not be established to MLM1-[SQL Server] Cant allocate space for object 'Syslogs' in database 'tempdb' because the 'logsegment' segment is full. If you ran space in syslogs dump the transaction log. Otherwise use ALTER DATABASE or sp_extendsegment to increase the size of the segment.

Ok, I am not up on SQL so I'm not sure how to dump my tempdb database. I have a coworker that has only done this sort of thing in the Enterprise Manager and we can't get there. So how do I do this and make sure that I don't blow away any data? Also if I do dump my tempdb will this cure my problems and how do I avoid having this happen again?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Jeb

Inserting/exporting Data From SQL Over Internet?

Jul 5, 2007

Hi

The situation is this. I have a desktop app which exports data to sql 2005 across internet. What is the most robust way of doing this and what security should be in place?

I have heard that sending data across to sql is not the best & safest way, but unfortunately cannot really do anything about this. is there any way of getting over the problem if connection goes down while uploading, and is Bulk Insert the best method?

Would appreciate any comments on "need to copy data to sql 2005 over internet in best way" if possible.

Many thanks

When Windows Firewall Is ON, SQL Server Does Not Get Connected Thru TCP

Jul 27, 2006

I am using SQL Server 2005 Express + SP1 on a Windows Small Business Server(SBS) box. The SBS is connected to a client thru LAN.

Following are what I gave as IP address and DNS on the server:

IP: 192.168.16.2, subnet mask : 255.255.255.0, Preferred DNS server: 192.168.16.2, Default gateway and Alternate DNS Server blank

On the client, I have,

IP: 192.168.16.4, subnet mask : 255.255.255.0, Preferred DNS server, Default gateway and Alternate DNS Server blank

I can ping and connect to either of the machines.

If I do a sqlcmd -S "tcp:servernameINSTANCE,port", I get the following error message:
HResult 0x80090304, Level 16, State 1
SQL Network Interfaces: The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted

Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Cannot generate SSPI context

If I do a sqlcmd -S "tcp:192.168.16.2INSTANCE,port", it connects to SQL Server.

I have the Windows Firewall ON. If I Off the firewall, I do not have any problem at all.

I included File and Printer Sharing, sqlsvr.exe in the Exception list of the Windows Firewall.

Any help to solve the issue is appreciated.

Thanks.

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Find Who Is Connected To A Database From DMV

I have a query that finds all SPID's connected to a particular database:

select d.name, p.*
from sys.databases d join sys.sysprocesses p
on d.database_id = p.dbid
where d.name = 'my_db'

But now we have a new rule that we should not use outdated compatibility views, and one of them is sys.sysprocesses. I checked sys.dm_exec_connections/session/requests but failed to replace my existing code. The first two don't have dbid, the last one, requests, has it, but it selects only currently executing statements.

SQL Server Memory Not Releasing When Not Connected To Server

Jun 2, 2004

Hello all,

When I close a web form that has a connection to my SQL Server, I am not seeing the memory process close in task manager (of the SQL Server). I am using the "open late close early" theory of database connections. I am using the "close" method for my database connections. Is there any automated utility that will shut down these processes? I thought when the user was disconnected from the database, the memory process would automatically shut down.

Any suggestions, thoughts, or ideas?

Error 15002 Executing Sp_setapprole Statement Using The SQL Native Client Connected To SQL Server 2005

Does anyone know if this is a SQL Native Client bug? I've read a previous thread (posted back on Jan. 18th, 2007) about this error, but there are no replies. I am getting this error when I issue the sp_setapprole command using sqlexecdirect() ODBC api call. Is there any way to work around this? Or is there a fix to the SQL Native Client? The error 15002 message text states "The procedure sys.sp_setapprole cannot be executed within a transaction". This is on a new connection so there should be no transactions active at the time. Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide on this.
